Richard Neville by William Dobson
oil on canvas, circa 1643 (NPG).
Two major thoughts here are: oooooh is that a wheel-lock pistol? And for this man being a Royalist, he has that mullet-thing going on with short bangs and layers that I associate with Puritans (who also had lots of hair, ignore the interpretations of 19th century artists who take "roundhead" too far).
Consider the story of Charles II's escape from Parliamentary forces, which he loved to recount. As part of his disguise, his hair was cut "leaving it short on top but long at the sides." ("My liege, no one will recognise you with this bummy Puritan haircut. Lmao.")

I've just started watching the White Queen, while I like it, I do have opinions on Edward and Warwick's relationship. Basically, I can understand Edward marrying Elizabeth over Brona and I support that. But I also see why Warwick is mad at everything that happens after. Warwick is essentially attempting to keep the kingdom together, and he has been the one behind treaties and securing Edward's place on the throne. He fought with Edward with this idea that the two would work together but when Edward himself started to favor the Rivers family more - I can see why Warwick would be upset. Mainly, what I am speaking about is refusing to have his daughters married to Richard and Goerge - that made no sense to me, and then making a treaty with the Burgandy rather than the French. I do understand loyalty to the Rivers, especially since they are the royal family. But while I get the main idea was for Warwick to be seen as a scheming villain which...don't get me wrong, he was nasty for how he treated Elizabeth and what he did to her father and brother...I also feel that at a point, before he became power hungry, he was more concerned with keeping treaties and alliances rather than power. It's like he did at the end of the day just want to strengthen the kingdom and I feel Edward didn't get that.
This isn't to excuse the villain he became and his clear hatred toward Elizabeth, or the fact that he's a shit dad. I don't fault Elizabeth for not trusting him especially since she so many times attempted to extend the olive branch, and I do find her to be the ultimate victim to Edward's stupidity and Warwick's grasp for power.

What exactly is Warwick's legacy dispute?
I assume you talk about Richard Neville, the Kingmaker considering the XVth century had three 'Warwick dispute'. There are two legacies around the Kingmaker, coveted mainly by his two sons-in-law. The material legacy are his immense estates, ranging form his Neville lordships in Northern England to his Midlands Beauchamp estates without forgetting the Spencer-Montagu lands. All this made him one of the biggest, richest landowners in England, having lands in many counties and a titanic annual income (around £ 5,400). Corollary to that was his vast pool of vassals, servants, and connexions which made him an immensely influential individual.
The second legacy is his legend, his aura, his myth. He's the Kingmaker. He's the one rebelling for the common good, the hero of the multitude, the pirate of the Channel, the mighty figure dealing with kings and cardinals. His popularity is genuine, and his fame is immense. His legacy is dangerous to kings, considering he overthrew both Edward IV and Henry VI on accusations of misrule and abuse and for common good.
Despite his betrayal, Clarence was his natural heir as son-in-law and could enter his inheritance and make sure Warwick wasn't attainted. That opened his succession without the taint of treason and fear of confiscation. Gloucester was a more discreet competitor. By Patent Letters, he won the Neville lordships that were in entail to the Neville male line. He simply took advantage from the attainder of the father's male heir, John Neville.
Gloucester played his cards well: he convinced Anne Neville to marry him and triggered a succession crisis against Clarence. He played around fears of Clarence's overmighty position as a rich royal family member married to a wealthy heiress.
The inheritance was so massive it eventually required a public Parliamentary legislation to partake it. Basically it:
Utterly excluded other competitors with little reserve. Warwick's wife was legally death. George Neville was excluded from inheritance through his father's attainder, a highly unusual move.
Partake the inheritance mainly in favor of Clarence: he won both earldoms. and most southern lands but Richard won his offices and the Northern estates not as royal grants but marriage estates.
So that's it, Clarence won? Not really considering Richard managed to sneak more advantage following Clarence's death in 1478. He won back the Ealrdom of Salisbury for his son and many offices. More importantly, he successfully presented himself as Warwick's heir in the North, attracting his massive retinue that would help him all the way to usurpation.
As for his legend, it was caught by both. Clarence used it to shore up his popularity, Gloucester revived it in 1483 to overthrow a government and a king.

Alive, then dead, then alive again
When there was no male heir, there could be legal and other, sometimes violent, disputes over who should inherit. Richard Neville, the sixteenth Earl of Warwick, known as The Kingmaker, managed to gain control of the Dispenser and Beauchamp estates his wife, Anne, inherited from her parents, despite Anne’s half-sisters and their husbands also attempting to claim a share.
Such was the wealth and size of the estates, that after Richard Neville’s death at the Battle of Barnet in 1471, Parliament declared Anne legally dead so that her estates could be divided between her two daughters, Isabel and Anne. This meant their husbands – Edward IV’s brothers – George and Richard, could take control. Anne Beauchamp spent many years in the custody of her son-in-law, Richard III. However, after Henry VII won the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, Parliament declared Anne alive again and she was restored to her lands. In return, Anne gave several manors to the Duchy of Cornwall, including the Cornish manors of Helston Tony and Carnanton (Catalogue ref: E 40/11056).

As someone who 'works' within the media and has rattled a few cages with my opinions online (though certainly not to the extent Richard and his colleagues did with Oz), I rather enjoyed Hippie Hippie Shake. Cillian Murphy and Sienna Miller shot the film adaptation of it over a decade ago but it has yet to see the light of day - particularly given the increased interest in Cillian and his career following the release of Oppenheimer, I really hope it gets shared with the world sooner rather than later.

Requiem of the Rose King: The Queen and the Rose Knight chapter 12 - Margaret & Henry
DO NOT REPOST OR UPLOAD ELSEWHERE! This is a fan translation. I apologize for any mistakes in my translations. I tried my best! Please show your support to Aya-sensei by purchasing her manga!

Aya-sensei has wrapped up Margaret’s story, and she absolutely delivered in this final chapter. I was rather curious if we would get to see this scene between Margaret and Henry, and how Prince Edward of Lancaster was conceived. Only for the sole purpose of maintaining Lancastrian rule, and keeping York far, far away from the crown.
Tumblr media
My only gripe with this arc is that we do not see Suffolk’s head roll. Margaret does confess her feelings, they share a kiss, and she sees him off. But, as Warwick mentions, his head will indeed roll. Somerset is next on the list.
I hope we get an English translation of this story soon. She isn’t my favorite, but I did enjoy seeing Margaret grow into the cold, calculating queen we know her as in the main story. Loved seeing all the new characters especially William, the Duke of Suffolk.
As of now, I think Aya-sensei is getting ready to focus on a Whitey arc? I think that’s what I saw last update. Correct me if I’m wrong. But, she has a lot to work with, and I know fans absolutely loved Somerset, so maybe we could get stories with him? Any ROTRK guy catch your interest? Aside from the popular characters, of course.
