December is here, which means it is time for Christmas fanfiction! One story for each letter of the alphabet, from December 1 through Boxing Day. My main ship is Chelsie, but I'll be writing a few others as well. Thank you to chelsie fan for the Christmas prompts list!
December 21 - Under the Mistletoe - smooching! - or not, if you want to be mean
I couldn't be mean, so there are lots of smooches. Featuring Cobert, Baxley, Richobel, and Chelsie!

Once upon a time I was a writer. Man, how times have changed. I blame this on summer roadtrip playlists and all the Bangtan fic I’ve been devouring over the last year and a half. We’re about to find out what it looks like when I post fic and don’t care about the consequences, or. Something. New leaves, turning over.
Excerpt
He’s here for whichever Isobel shows up on any given day, at any moment. This particular version, soft and vulnerable, does a number on his self-control, the compulsion to wrap her up and secret her away a strong one. It’s neither what she wants nor likely will allow, but there are certain overtures she’s never been able to refuse.

Even I hate me for this but I need to feel good about something right now, so here’s a teaser of my writing session today for Anéanti.
This is barely edited and by the time it sees the light of day it may look nothing like this at all, but for the moment I’m vibing so share my good vibes.
Excerpt:
“You and Joseph are more than welcome to stay tonight. We’ve certainly got room enough.” Isobel understands that this being Phyllis’ long weekend means it’ll be the last one for a long time, likely the rest of the year. It’s hazards of the job and she knows Phyllis won’t accept her mother-henning. She knew full well what she was getting into and, more than that, would insist this is Isobel’s time to enjoy. Her own will come in due season and besides, life with Joseph is anything but boring.
Phyllis levels Isobel with a look. “I say this with the utmost respect. You know I love you, but the absolute last thing you and Richard need tonight is company.” On seeing Isobel’s raised eyebrow, she adds, “Go on then. Tell me I’m wrong.”
Isobel’s silence is all the answer she needs.
“Any other time I’d say yes in a moment. I’m thrilled for you, Izzy. For both of you. And that’s why, for tonight, I’m going to pass.”
“You know I’ll worry about you driving home late.”
“Oh, do stop! I’ve booked us into a b&b in the village, and I’ll be the one driving us there. Not Joseph. Alright? So don’t worry.”
“I love Joseph, you know that. It’s nothing against him. Or you.”
“No, I know. He can’t hold his liquor any better than the two of you!” Phyllis shoots her a sideways glance full of mirth. Isobel feigns offence and fails, the two women giggling as Isobel bumps Phyllis’ elbow with her own.
“I’m not sure I know what to do with this cheeky side of you,” Isobel teases. “Joseph’s rubbing off. It’s good, Phyll. He’s been good for you.”
Phyllis goes quiet again, bashful. The tops of her high cheekbones flush pink. “That he has,” she murmurs. “To say nothing of what Richard’s done for you.” She follows her friend’s line of sight as it shifts to the aforementioned man and watches their eyes lock on one another again. “He’s going to take you apart.”
It’s hushed, barely audible, and the last thing she ever expected to hear from the mouth of Phyllis Molesley. Isobel gasps, her entire face going beetroot.
“It’s alright, you know! We’re both married women here!”
Isobel hides her face in her hands, mortified. “Phyllis, I swear to God, if it was anyone but you—“
“Oh, you don’t want to know what Bez had to say.”
“I’m sure I don’t!”
“Your innocent ears would burst into flame!”
“You’re one to talk, miss meek and mild!”
Phyllis is laughing in earnest now and it warms Isobel through: the fact that she’s able to form this kind of bond now that other women are no longer her juniors, her competition. The fact that her friend is so happy after all the hardship she’s come through. It’s a good day to be alive, a good season into which she’s arrived. Serendipitous.
“Right then. I’m getting out of your hair. I’ve got a drunk husband to put to bed, and you …”
“... Will thank you not to finish that sentence!” Isobel cackles.
“Just …” Phyllis says in parting, “just mind you don’t wax philosophical for too much longer. You’ll miss all the action! Byeee!” She skips out the door, dodging Isobel’s attempt to swat her with the tea towel, and is off across the lawn to collect Joseph.
Isobel is left shaking her head, grinning, arms folded across her middle as she watches Richard come to the realisation that they’re alone now.

I love Downton Abbey but the one thing I’m disappointed about is that Clarkson and Isobel didn’t end up together.

TGIF.
It hasn’t been a bad week, just crazy at work. Today I barely had time to look up from my desk. I don’t know if I’m fighting allergies or a cold, but right when Mister got home I had a coughing attack. Ugh. (He said, “Am I losing you?”)
This new routine is turning me into an old lady...twice this week I’ve gone to bed before nine. The alarm going off shortly after five means I need all the extra sleep I can get. If I can sleep.
Evenings at home are for chores, figuring out insurance (yaaaaaaay), or watching something mindless on YouTube because Brain Needs A Break.
Writing’s been creeping along. In the morning I’ve been getting 20 minutes, or up to 45 minutes on the laptop before going to work. It’s driving me crazy not to be able to write whenever I want. Usually at work I can cobble together a few minutes here and there throughout the day, but this week? Nope.
My unfinished fics fill the spare moments: First Kiss (thank you local DJs who play James Arthur constantly), and Wait for Me (oh Richobel, I adore you! I never made you wait THIS long); Most Quiet Need, which nudges me with reminders, coming around the corner in quiet moments (really); Married Life (I could simply complete this one and call it a day, but there are Things I still want to do with it); an unpublished Chelsie fic I started writing two months ago which will simply NOT LEAVE ME ALONE...oh, and that Epic of Gilgamesh-like story based on a season of weather that has taken over most of my soul.
Only All The Difference has been rescued from neglect by @chelsiefan71, who started the unofficialdas8.
Part of me just wants to write stuff and post - boom, done. But I can’t do that. I should say I cannot force myself to do that.
I want to do my stories justice. I do have standards. It drove me crazy that someone had to tell me about a mistake in AtD last week - not that they drove me crazy, or I was mad...but I was angry at MYSELF for not catching it. You all have little idea how hard I am on myself. One comma error and it sticks in my brain like a splinter for weeks. Anyway...
Like Charles Carson says, “We must keep up standards”, come the Germans or wars or Twitter bleatings by the current occupant of the White House (who really has the most horrible hair - has anyone ever had the nerve to tell him that? To his face?), or crazy-busy days at the office or chores that won’t do themselves.
But I want to finish the stories, too. Because my readers (there are more than one of them...I hope) deserve that. They deserve to know how the story ends.
So here I am, happily employed but frustrated that I don’t have 800% energy to write all night. I’d love to devote all weekend to writing, but that won’t happen - we’ve got to put the basement back together, clean out the garage, and try to do some yardwork while the weather is still nice. I’ll do what I can.
In the meantime, you all have a good Friday. I’ve got to finish supper and go to choir. We’re singing on Sunday, or I’d be tempted to skip it.

Downton Abbey drabble: Mrs. Hughes, Dr. Clarkson, one-sided Isobel Crawley/Dr. Clarkson
“If you would like my help I am glad to give it, but would not Mrs. Crawley be better qualified, Doctor Clarkson?” Mrs. Hughes asked.
“She is more practiced at it yes, but I would prefer not to trouble her at this time. It is an imposition on your time, I know.”
“I would not have agreed if it were a burden.”
“I am very grateful, Mrs. Hughes.”
“Have you had a falling out?” she probed gently. “Has she been unkind?”
“Oh no,” he replied, a strange expression on his face. “She has been excessively kind.” His eyes flicked down to the table. “She was kind enough to not give me room to make a fool of myself.” He met Mrs. Hughes’ gaze. "She was so kind as to not even let me properly ask the question.”
“Oh,” Mrs. Hughes breathed. “I am sorry.”
“As am I.” He ran a finger over the delicate handle of the teacup. “So you see, I would rather not ask her for her assistance in this matter at this particular time. Later,” he drew himself up, “when more time has passed...”
“Of course.” She set her own cup aside. “Where would you like me to begin?”

I’ve been reading lots of things with very aesthetic moodboards lately. This morning I was thinking about retired Richobel and autumn in the Yorkshire Love Song-verse and, well ... this happened.
I’m not saying I’m going to write something to accompany this. I’m not not saying it, either. I don’t know what I’m saying. I have another thing I’m writing that occupies all of my heart and my feels at the moment but man, these two. I’m still absolutely gone for them.

Dr Clarkson’s lookalike
I’m currently watching The Dr Blake Mystery’s and for some weird reason he reminds me of our sexy Scottish Doctor Clarkson. I don’t know why?

Excerpt:
"Oi!" he says, and it's too loud even to his own ears, and he doesn't flinch when she claps a hand over his mouth. "Oi." A whisper this time, cupping his hand around her ear. "What's sauce for the goose …"
She laughs full and joyous without being too loud, squeezing his hand even as she shakes her head at him. "Oh, no. Doesn't work like that." She's whispering again, her lips ghosting against the shell of his ear, breath warm and wet and he shivers at the contrast of her heat against the chill evening air.
"No?" he comes back. "And why not?"
This time she leans in further, until their lips are almost touching. "Because you're drunk," she whispers, a flick of her tongue at the close of her statement. It misses his mouth and he chases after it. "No," she tells him in response, but she arches into him as his lips touch gently below her ear.
"Oh, and you're not?" He raises an eyebrow.
She laughs again, effusive and musical, and he loves her like this. The way a little alcohol makes her silly. She shakes her head where it lies on the edge of the headrest. "I'm squiffy. You're shit-faced. There's a difference."
He rolls his eyes. "Semantics."
She gets an indignant look. "It's not, and you know it!" She's whisper-shouting now and he can smell the Malbec on her breath. It's more a taste than a smell, really, and he aches to kiss it right out of her mouth.
He chuckles. She's not wrong, but his head is too muzzy to engage her in hair-splitting. He fires one parting shot. "You started it."
