Review 541: Space Shipped
Presented By:
Phoenix Tears Productions
“Can we have an immersive world where my choices DON’T unalive someone?”
That was the question Ricky asked after counting all the characters in the immersive dramas that we had taken off the census, including ourselves, by choosing the wrong door or outcome. If you’re wondering our body count goes into the forties which includes two actresses, a space explorer, and two bunnies in a space lab. That is why we were excited but reticent when we entered “Space Shipped” by Phoenix Tears. We were just sitting in the waiting room and telling ourselves: “knowing our track record the entire space station is going up in smoke.” That’s when we saw this is nothing of the sort. We are just here for Max’s birthday party and the goal(hopefully) was romance!

The Ship
...a Romance like our roguish space captain and our person of the hour. Markham and Creasman were two of our favorite performers in the show. They have a very familiar way with each other which made their scenes together really special. We don’t know what decisions it takes to get to their plotline but it’s very worth it.

MAVEN
We were floored by the use of a central AI in the waiting room to anchor the experience together. Maven is ready to spill the tea and share the receipts. This is a great use of both the Zoom platform and the sci-fi genre. Maybe it was Ervin’s special take on the role of a bot that knows everything but won’t divulge anything. We’re wondering when we can discard Alexa and get a MAVEN of our own.

The Duo
Okay, we HAVE to talk about the use of a puzzle element. This group of scallywags will send guests everywhere trying to get passwords or docking codes and it's a very entertaining time just watching them figure it out. Sheetz and Vance draw you in with their affable and roguish manner. it’s hilarious to see them work. You could spend the whole time watching them in The Bottle and not feel like any of it is wasted.
Tumblr media
People love to say that we need more queer stories and queer spaces in the arts. Yet what we want to see more than anything is more stories and spaces like this! We want to see more queer sci-fi. We want more queer weirdness. We want to see more spaces online like this in general where the guests can choose how they want to interact, and they can create chaos in a digital realm for two hours. If you haven’t made chaos in an immersive space online and want to know how then keep your eyes glued to Phoenix Tears and catch them the next time they bring their particular brand of Zaniness online.

Strange to write letters to ghosts. Seems that's all I write these days. Ghosts of those departed and of those lost. Haunted.
Here's to Steve.
Well, brother, we all came out to Castle Blood last night. I finally got there, just like you told me I should. I see now why you called it your real home. It was Halloween the way it is meant to be. Even after all this time, I'm still learning from you. You were right - I couldn't stop smiling.
We gathered afterwards at my hotel suite and ate Sheetz and played games. It wasn't until we were back there and sharing stories that I realized how close that was to the way things were that first weekend we haunted together. It was almost 3am before everyone left to go home. We're going for a lights on tour in a couple hours to try and catch all the other hidden references to you. I tried to finish this blog entry last night when it was fresh in my mind, but was prevented from doing so, so I slept on it.
This weekend helped a lot. It's the first Halloween weekend that I haven't haunted in a decade, but I spent it the way you always wished you could have - spent with friends, no expectations of working a haunt, just enjoying our favorite holiday like the guests we've been entertaining for years. Glad I finally took that advice too, even if that determination came late. Haunting... haunts us.
Spotted your nameplate on the mausoleum wall and your "copyright plate" in the laboratory scene. I expect Ricky will point out the rest of the references and memorials when we're going through later today. I only got choked up once last night during the show - I feel like that's an accomplishment on some level. No promises that number holds as steady today.
Finished up this blog entry right after I ordered at Dorido's. Thought you'd appreciate that. Wish you were across the table from me.
You are so missed, my friend. By so many more than just me. We're all still carrying that creative fire onward. Halloween will never die, so part of you still lives on as well. See you further on up the road, brother. Happy Halloween.

So my DnD folks have mentioned playing Changeling at some point. It might still be months from now before we start a Changeling campaign since we still have another big ol’ arc to get through for our current DnD game, but in the meanwhile we’re constructing characters. So here’s me some concept art using the obscenely cliche split-screen bc character has a secret second form art trope. Dude’s name is Ricky. I am absolutely stealing the glasses idea from TAZ’s Mothman bc I feckin’ love that character.
So there we goes. This is Ricky, he works at a Sheetz.

So here's the story about how young, conservative, evangelical boy, in the middle of Bumfuck, Egypt, Pennsylvania, realized that he was gay as Christmas.
In July 1999, I spent the night at my grandparents house after a family reunion. It was the summer before my 16th birthday. I was watching VH1, because I knew MTV was too escandelo but no one said anything about her more adult contemporary/adult Top 40 sister video channel. They used to have a Top Ten countdown and I was obsessed with music countdowns so naturally I watched it with baited breathe, having only heard most of these songs in the grocery store or on the TV screens at Walmart because we only listened to Christian music.
I call still recall almost every song in the top ten. TLC's No Scrubs, J.Lo's debut single If You Had My Love, Sarah McLachlan's live clip for I Will Remember You, Backstreet Boys in all white singing I Want It That Way, Faith Hill writhing around in the desert to one of the sexiest songs of all time, Breathe, my faves Sixpence None The Richer (a band I knew! Score!) with their She's All That soundtrack smash Kiss Me. But the number one video that week in Summer '99? Ricky Martin, Livin' La Vida Loca. Upside, inside out, I was transfixed by the scene where his female costar poured hot wax on his bare chest. Not really by the hot wax, but his full lips, his spiky dark hair, his bedroom eyes and a body made for sin. What was wrong with me?
Thanks to the old fashioned scrolling guide channel (I don't think it was called TV Guide channel yet) I learned that the countdown would repeat in 3 hours. So while my grandparents slept, I watched with the sound down low, waiting for that beautiful Puerto Rican man to shake his hips in his tight black pants.  I resolved to pull a Princess Elsa and conceal, don't feel, what it was that Senor Martin stirred within me. My father was dying of cancer, I was headed to Washington DC to administer Christian charity to underprivileged kids and, ironically, help at food bank for AIDS patients. (Yes, the first gay people I met were helping out there. The Tinky Winky doll holding a rainbow flag in the office gave it away.)
Fast forward about two and half years, when I walked into a Sheetz in the biggest town in the area (it had a JC Penney’s and TWO grocery stores!) I was 19 and knew I was struggling with what I thought God wanted and what my libido/heart wanted. What to my wandering eye should appear, but the most beautiful man I'd seen since Ricky and his open shirt. There was Justin Timberlake, teen idol all grown up, in just white shorts, a pukka necklace and a pout. I knew then and there. I knew there was no pretending to myself at least (it would be about 5 years before I stopped pretending for everyone else. In the meantime, Antonio Bandares' butt in Original Sin, Chris Daughtry's bald head and, strangely, Samwise Gamgee, would remind me that, yeah, I like the mens.)
So on this, the occasion of Justin Timberlake's 36th birthday, I say thank you for being super hot and shirtless on the cover of what is supposed to be a serious music magazine. Teenage me needed that mental image.
