Neena sat at the table outside, closing her eyes and enjoying the sun and perhaps one of the last few days of warmth before they entered a truly chilly autumn. She had a coffee in front of her, her usual from whenever she stopped by the cafe not far from her condo. But today she wasn't researching or working on a new episode. She was waiting for Ricky. Of course she saw more of him through Nicole from the moment her friend started dating the man, but she had grown up with Ricky her whole life due to her family's closeness to the Thompsons. She knew he was in the halfway house, and when she reached out to him to visit to see how he was doing, he insisted meeting her for coffee somewhere else. So, Neena suggested Fresh Tracks and he agreed. Hearing footsteps, she opened her eyes and peaked through her expensive sunglasses and burst into a giant grin upon seeing Ricky. "You made it! What do you want? It's on me."

Okay so, as a black woman (or poc) I’ve been a consistent youtube watcher since middle school (as many of us of all races) and have been in many “fandoms” growing up. Many YouTubers that I enjoyed growing up however did not look like me (or had fandoms that looked like me), which was fine cuz I wasn’t looking for representation technically at the time I was just finding people I enjoyed watching after school when I got home. All that being said I’ve noticed that in many predominantly white YouTuber friend groups there is always ONE and I mean ONE black person. And I began to notice a pattern with them.

As someone who’s been the only black person in a predominantly white space I’ve experienced many POC feel like they have to overextend themselves in a way. By that I mean, you can tell that they are being as extra and loud as their white youtube friends and almost obnoxious just to get the same reaction and views. And they all do the same thing in terms of comedy with their white friends and that is making race jokes...but about themselves and their community. They always making a reference to their skin color in a way to be comedic or funny. Now this can be funny sometimes but experiencing being a black person in a white space, it’s not just comedy, it’s trying to make their white friends comfortable. Many POC I’ve noticed will do this as a way of being like, “I’m going to say this joke, so you don’t have to and I won’t feel bad cuz I already said it so it’s fine” I’ve seen all POC do this. And it never fails when I see that one black friend in a group of white friends. Now I could be wildin and maybe the only one who notices but idk, is it just me or?.....thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

the first iteration of the dream team is so funny.

imagine youre a regular new yorker and you’re being attacked by santas or bugs or devils at an art show and things are weird but you also can’t quite tell what’s actually happening (got to love umbral arcana) ? but you’re scared out of your mind until a drunk lady punches the scary monster in the face and the guy who’s clearly a drug dealer starts blasting fire out of his hands?? maybe he’s got a lighter and some hairspray, though he’s also holding a gun? and then a very nice and serious older guy is keeping everything calm and encouraging his friends and you think everything is going to be okay, especially because this nice sweet firefighter is making sure everyone’s safe. and you think he looks like mr march from the calendar!

then a massive rat man summons some crocodiles or a pack of rats or a cockroach that is unusually juicy and then broadway legend misty moore literally insults a monster to death whilst indiscriminately flirting with her friends.

and when it’s all over they’re acting like this is business as usual. and maybe you’re confused for like three minutes until you remember this is new york — who else would save you but a broadway star, a rat, a firefighter, a drug dealer, an alcoholic and kingston brown from uptown who helped you jumpstart your car three months ago

So something I'm loving about the unsleeping city so far is the commitment to being kind? Like I don't know if it's intentional but from the very first episode onwards we meet people like Kingston, whose whole aim is that he protects the city. He's there for his people, his neighbourhood, his community, he's giving himself to help them. He's a nurse- a healer- he knows everyone and everyone knows him. Kugrash, who lurks in subway tunnels and sewers, watching over subway workers and giving warmth and shelter and food to those who don't have it. Who makes little plastic shoes for a drunkard in an alleyway. And Ricky, whose only desire is to keep people safe, to use his skills to fight danger on their behalf, to interpose himself in harm's way. Even though it's not as evident in the others, it's still there. Sofia addresses a bachelorette party after her husband leaves her not to mock them or discourage them- but to wish the bride-to-be happiness and joy. Pete (though again, not as obvious, especially at first) takes his ex, who was actively trying to hurt him at the time, in his arms and carries her to safety. And Misty, though often vain and dismissive, has nothing but kind words and compliments for her friends and compatriots. Sorry for the rant, it's just something I think is really cool, especially given the setting of new York being portrayed as somewhere where people are cold-hearted and self-centred.

Favorite Intrepid Heroes Characters:

Now that I have finished watching all of the Dimension 20 campaigns (currently running one notwithstanding, obviously), I want to talk about my favorite characters played by the Intrepid Heroes!

Emily Axford:

Okay, listen, Emily is a very talented player who knows how to make a character work, but this was the easiest call for me. I am in love with Unsleeping City's Sofia Bicicleta Lee, she is one of my favorite PCs overall.

The badass martial arts wife of the ultimate wife guy, whose best friend is a talking rat. Plus, she looks like Fran Drescher and I mean, c'mon, I'm just a lesbian born in the early 90s. How could I not.

I'm afraid I don't have a 'close' second for Emily, because all her characters are great and close together, but Sofia shoots out for me.

Lou Wilson:

It's kind of funny how Lou and Emily are inherently linked for me in this, because until I watched ACoFaF, I thought I'd be putting Unsleeping City's Kingston Brown down here.

However, absolutely everything A Court of Fey and Flowers' Squak Airavis has going on is so utterly impeccable. He is such a queer mess, it's amazing. (And it's linked to Emily, because something very important about him is his dynamic with his dear cousin Chirp.)

Zac Oyama:

I'm glad that ACoFaF made me pick Squak for Lou, because otherwise, this would feel like just a list of Unsleeping City characters, because for Zac, it's so very clearly and definitely Ricky Matsui.

The ultimate himbo. The courageous firefighter with his good boy puppy. Absolute wife guy even though he takes too damn long to figure that getting-married-part out. I love Ricky so, so, so much.

Though, second place shout-out to Colin Provolone from Ravening War, that lil cheese knight was so much fun to enjoy and he had so much tension, it was incredible.

Brian Murphy:

My favorite Fantasy High PC - Riz 'The Ball' Gukgak, hands down. That wanna be detective boy is too precious, plus, as an ace I was so, so, so hyped and excited about the rep in him.

Second place shout-out, once more, to Unsleeping City and... surprisingly, to Cody Walsh. I love Kugrash a whole lot, but there was something utterly hilarious to Cody.

Siobhan Thompson:

Hers was my favorite character on A Starstruck Odyssey - I love Riva. They were also such a refreshing flavor for Siobhan, honestly? They were utterly precious and adorable and sweet.

Second place... okay, look, it's Unsleeping City again, yeah. But out of the two characters she played, I actually loved Iga Lisowski more. The Polish mom who guards the dragon. Amazing character pitch, honestly.

Ally Beardsley:

Actually genuinely the hardest choice because Ally is amazing at creating characters. But as a lesbian with a certain type, I am obliged to say A Starstruck Odyssey's Margaret Encino. A hot lady with a purpose and a load of money. When they started calling her Mommy? Oh boy fans self. It was also so much fun to see a character who didn't really do combat but actually got so much done with business calls. Competence is sexy, y'all.

Second place goes to Lars Vandenchomp from Mice and Murder though. Love me a loyal himbo and they were such a good puppy? Amazing.

I’m rewatching Unsleeping City and got to the episode “Borough of Dreams.” I just noticed (slash I haven’t watched TUC in a hot second and might’ve just forgotten this exchange) that when Siobhan is searching for the name of the show Eliza Doolittle is from, Zac offers Dr. Doolittle before Brennan says My Fair Lady, and Zac and Ally proceed to absolute CRY with laughter and like mime across the table about it. Idk it just made me really laugh hard and wanted to share in case anyone either wanted to know or a reminder that that little moment existed
