“ever since you discovered boys you spend way too much time trying to see yourself through their eyes” - season 1 episode 5
the moment kourtney said this to nini, and when nini sang out of the old, a song about wanting to leave your old town and start something new, it always made it known to me that at the end nini was getting some feminist type of ending. so even if rina wasn’t a thing or even if rini lasted longer, i always had a gut instinct nini’s journey was away from east high and she was going to “choose herself” in the very end. her going back to ricky regressed her character growth. it was made clear by kourtney that nini saw herself through his eyes, and nini herself mentioned she needed to find herself (she literally told ricky these exact words in an argument in the first episodes about how she found herself at camp, away from him) the show perfectly showcased this in the first season and second season. this wasn’t just added spontaneously, it’s been there since season one. to deny that is to admit you never understood her character in the first place. for people to still not see that is beyond me. olivia wrote and sung so many nini songs that depict this (the rose song spells it out perfectly) and yet people still aren’t actually listening or understanding the lyrics, it’s honestly sad.
“olivia leaving” didn’t change anything. these themes with her character have been there since season one. as i just described by taking two examples from the first season. which was written and recorded way before olivia blew up. it’s honestly tiring that people purposely ignore this because they have a one dimensional view of the show and believe they’re right. or that the writer/creator of these characters and show is “lying” as if they know more then the man who created these characters in the first place.

Ricky only having one item left to complete his bucket list which is a metaphor of his childhood and passage to growing up. Ricky and Big Red talking about Ricky's birthday and how scary it feels growing up. Nini being the person to give Ricky the lotto ticket at the end (his last item to cross off from the list). This basically confirms that Nini always represented his childhood. Ricky wrote that bucket list when he was a little kid and got it completed with the help of Nini, his childhood. Now he can truly be ready to embrace his life, now he is ready to grow up and leave his childhood behind. Nini was Ricky’s childhood. Gina represents his future.

i still don’t think we talk enough about how heartbreaking it would be for ej caswell to be not his best self and lose a girl to ricky bowen, then go on a long hard journey of self-development and self-improvement, learning to be a more outward-looking & genuine person and finally begin to gain confidence in his new, better self and STILL lose a girl to ricky bowen.

also... not to be a rini in the tags in 2023 when y'all don't seem to allow that for no good reason but...
the implications of mike and lynne sitting next to kourtney's mom...
the fact that ricky's parents and kourtney's parents have probably known each other since the kids were in elementary school... because kourtney and nini have been besties since they were in elementary school (actual timing unknown), and ricky and nini have been best friends since kindergarten...
so since their kids are best friends with nini they all end up hanging out together a good amount or at least going to a lot of the same events and things and so the parents have probably been like- at least somewhat of friends over the years... and i just. soft. like i know they were probably seated together for convenience of getting the shots, but- in universe it's so wonderful to think about how all these people are connected...
and the fact if we get a moment of them talking... we could get a mention of it being weird being at a musical nini's not in... Yeah. that's not on my priority list of nini mentions, but- could be cute...

Just watched season 4 of HSMTMTS and besides the fact that there are an incredible amount of plot holes, I’m mad about the fact that they never addressed the issue that I imagine many wanted addresses canonically. And that’s Ricky Bowen’s anxiety. He had a clear anxiety issue, especially considering his problems with change and fear of losing people. I really wish he saw some kind of therapist or has a diagnosis that was discussed in the show. I think it would’ve been great representation and a good way to expand on Ricky’s character as a whole.

Ricky’s love for Gina is so different from his love for Nini. And this is a good thing because his love for Nini was very selfish and insecure. Ricky's actions towards Gina reflect his growth.
S1 Ricky projected everything that was going on with his parents onto his relationship with Nini. He thought his dad was wrong for not fighting to save the relationship with his mom. He did not understand at the time that people change and grow apart. He put everything into gaining Nini back despite her own happiness. He ignored how she said the HSM musical was important for her, how she said being at camp helped her come out of her shelf. He ignored the times she asked him to step back. His mind was focused on getting her back and even had a master plan in getting her to break up with EJ. He wasn’t the reason for their break up but he tried and was happy for it. That was what love meant for him. He thought fighting to get Nini back despite them growing apart was the right thing to do for him/them. He was selfish.
I’m not saying Ricky didn’t love Nini. He did. They loved each other, which is why they got back together but their relationship has never been about them not loving each other but about them not longer being compatible. A lot of people don’t get that getting back with her stopped Ricky's character development. He got back with Nini, so what’s next? Things are still changing and he is still resisting it. This made Nini reluctant to share things with him. She felt stock in her relationship with him. Ricky tried to be supportive of Nini but the farther away she was going – the more paranoid he got. The nail in the coffin was the song and deleting Nini's comments because the idea of her achieving her dreams and leaving scared him. He knew he was wrong which is why he admits he didn’t like the person he was becoming in order to keep their relationship. Ricky letting go of Nini was finally accepting the inevitable. Neither of them were progressing in that relationship. It hurt but it was necessary for Ricky to understand that.
2A Ricky was so in his mind about Nini that he didn’t notice how much Gina was suffering. The switch in 2B Ricky was instant after he let her go. He helped Carlos write his song for Seb and became a lot more involved with the theater. Nini and Ricky had one of the best closures and their relationship after that felt more natural. Ricky had the time to organically move on from Nini. It’s been months since their break up and both of them are so much better for it.
S3 Ricky is literally fighting to not go back to how he used to be ("I'm never going back to who I've been. I'm taking my time, won't be defined by who I was back then."). S1 Ricky would’ve done anything to sabotage Gina’s relationship with EJ at the first sign of trouble. He would’ve used him playing romantic leads with Gina to insert his feelings onto her like he did with Troy – this Ricky apologized to Gina for being too intense during rehearsals. This Ricky doesn’t want his feelings for Gina to be known. He is literally helping both of them fix their relationship despite how much it hurts him. Ricky's love for Gina is selfless. He knows this musical means everything to her. He is doing everything in his power to not become disruptive in their relationship and her big break. He is putting her needs before his own – something he didn’t do with Nini. He is not only showing up and staying – but making everyone else around him show up for her, including EJ.
Ricky is a way more mature version of himself. He is becoming more empathetic and receptive to other's peoples needs and feelings. He is finally stepping back (and watching) for Gina. He might be hurting inside but he won’t tell. This Ricky is the Ricky that could’ve been ready for Gina on S1. He left her slip through his fingers because if only he was ready then, they’ll be together by now. S1-2 Ricky was not ready to be with Gina – this Ricky is. Nini was Ricky's first love but not his only love. Gina is the love Ricky needs because she is the proof of his character finally accepting change.
