A little over a week ago I made a post here about sobbing crying because I couldn't text A when I was nervous, and everything was hard.
Well today I'm not crying, but I'm going to make another one about not being able to text him about good stuff. I'm just going to write what id have texted him here without context and exposition, so it won't mean anything to anyone but me here. But I want to tell someone, so here we go.
J and the Boy and I went to see D's daughter play basketball in the high school district tournament tonight. Holy shit, man, she's so good. She won the division 1 award for Ms. Hustle. I know that's not surprising really, because she's D's daughter and all but still. Awesome.
B was there too, and D's wife and both D's son and B's son. Our family sat in between D and B and we got commentary and play-by-play in stereo and it was hilarious. They played our old high school, and the head girls' coach now dressed up like he would be on TV for the NCAA tournament or something and D and B would not let it go. "Look at Coach over here, taking it serious with his vest and tie and his church shoes on." 😂😂😂😂😂
Our old high school's band straight up played Cherry Poppin' Daddies' Zoot Suit Riot. The whole song. Made me think about you big time. Swing at the high school game. If they start playing ska I'm gonna die. 😂😂😂
D's daughter's team was up 30 at halftime. They put the JV kids in the whole second half and still extended the lead. So of course then D and B were loud and vocal at the opposing coach to let the bench kids play. "Come on, Coach! Let 'em get a little court time. Rest the starters. At least let 'em take the workout shirts off!" (Dude, he didn't let the bench kids play even down 40+ with 2 minutes to go. WTF?!)
D's son stood up and applauded his sister until she was totally off the court and D and his wife both filmed him doing it. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🥹 J and I told the Boy, "See? Every parent does it." The Boy said, "That still doesn't make me like it." 😂😂😂❤️
Tonight was a really good night, man. And I'm a little weepy about shit now but I'm not really sad. I'm just thinking that I literally had all of my most favorite people around me tonight except you. I wish you were there.
But you were sort of there, weren't you? Zoot Suit Riot? Really? 😂😂😂😂😂 That fucking song will be in my head all night now. (For real if a high school band plays Adam Ant's Goody Two Shoes or Reel Big Fish's Sell Out or a They Might Be Giants song with a bunch of horn in it at a game before this season is over, I'm just assuming that's definitely you at the game with us.)
Still miss you all the time. But tonight was good. So I'm telling you about it. ❤️

What if Mitch McConnell, at the close of his scalding speech on the Senate floor blaming Donald Trump for the riot that occurred at the Capitol on Jan. 6, had promised to use his every last breath to ensure that Trump was convicted on impeachment charges and could never, ever become president again?
What if Melania Trump, after the porn star Stormy Daniels said Trump had unprotected sex with her less than four months after Melania gave birth to their son, had thrown all of Trump’s clothes, golf clubs, MAGA hats and hair spray onto the White House lawn with this note, “Never come back, you despicable creep!”
What if the influential evangelical leader Robert Jeffress, after Trump was caught on tape explaining that as a TV star he felt entitled to “grab” women in the most intimate places — or after Trump was found liable by a Manhattan jury of having done pretty much just that to E. Jean Carroll — declared that he would lead a campaign to ensure that anyone but Trump was elected in 2024 because Trump was a moral deviant whom Jeffress would not let babysit his two daughters, let alone the country?
Where would statements and actions like those have left Kevin McCarthy, his knuckleheads in the House G.O.P. caucus, and other Republicans who now are defending Trump against the Justice Department indictment? Would they be so eager to proclaim Trump’s innocence? Would they be raging against Tuesday’s hearing in Miami? Would they be claiming, falsely, that President Biden was indicting Trump, when they know full well that the president doesn’t have the power to indict anyone?
I doubt it. But I know that all of these questions are rhetorical. None of those people have the character to rise to these ethical challenges and take on Trump and what he has done to break our political system. Trump is like a drug dealer who thrives in a broken neighborhood, getting everyone hooked on his warped values. That is why he is doing everything he can to break our national neighborhood in two fundamental ways.
For starters, Trump has consistently tried to denigrate people who have demonstrated character and courage, by labeling them losers and weaklings. This comes easy to Trump because he is a man utterly without character — devoid of any sense of ethics or loyalty to any value system or person other than himself. And for him, politics is a blood sport in which you bludgeon the other guys and gals — whether they are in your party or not — with smears and nicknames and lies until they get out of your way.
Trump debuted this strategy early on with John McCain — a veteran, a man who never broke in five-plus years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, a man of real character. Do you remember what Trump said about McCain at a family leadership summit in Ames, Iowa, on July 18, 2015?
When McCain ran for president, “I supported him,” Trump told the audience. “He lost. He let us down. But he lost. So I never liked him much after that, because I don’t like losers.” When the audience laughed, the moderator, the pollster Frank Luntz, interjected, “But he’s a war hero!”
Trump — who wangled a dubious medical deferment to avoid the Vietnam War draft — then responded: “He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.” Later that day, Trump retweeted a web post headlined, “Donald Trump: John McCain Is ‘A Loser.’”
So part of the way Trump tries to break our system is to redefine the qualities of a leader — at least in the G.O.P. A leader is not someone like Liz Cheney or Mitt Romney, people prepared to risk their careers to defend the truth, serve the country and uphold the Constitution. No, a leader is someone like him, someone who is ready to win at any cost — to the country, to the Constitution and to the example we set for our children and our allies.
And when that is your definition of leadership, of winning, people of character like McCain, Cheney and Romney are in your way. You need to strip everyone around you of character, and make everything about securing power and money. That is why so many people who entered Trump’s orbit since 2015 have walked away muddied. And that’s why I knew that all the questions I asked earlier were rhetorical.
The second way that Trump is trying to break our system was on display on Tuesday in Miami, where he followed his appearance as a federal criminal defendant with a political meet-and-greet at a Cuban restaurant. There, once again, Trump tried to discredit the rules of the game that would restrain him and his limitless appetite for power for power’s sake.
How does he do that? First, he gets everyone around him — and, eventually, the vast majority of those in his party — to stop insisting that Trump abide by ethical norms. His family members and party colleagues have grown adept at running away from reporters’ microphones after every Trump outrage.
But precisely because key political allies, church leaders and close family members will not call out Trump for his moral and legal transgressions — which would make his 2024 re-election bid unthinkable and hasten his departure from the political scene — we have to rely solely on the courts to defend the rules of the game.
And when that happens, it puts tremendous stress on our judicial system and our democracy itself, because the decision to prosecute or not is always a judgment call. And when those judgment calls have to be rendered at times by judges or prosecutors appointed by Democrats — which is how our system works — it gives Trump and his flock the perfect opening to denounce the whole process as a “witch hunt.”
And when such behavior happens over and over across a broad front — because Trump won’t stop at red lights anywhere and just keeps daring us to ignore his transgressions or indict him so he can cry bias — we end up eroding the two most important pillars of our democratic system: the belief in the independence of our judiciary that ensures no one is above the law, and the belief in our ability to transfer power peacefully and legitimately.
Just consider one scene in Trump’s indictment. It’s after a federal grand jury subpoenaed him in May 2022, to produce all classified material in his possession. Notes written by his own lawyer, M. Evan Corcoran, quote Trump as saying: “I don’t want anybody looking through my boxes, I really don’t. … What happens if we just don’t respond at all or don’t play ball with them? Wouldn’t it be better if we just told them we don’t have anything here?”
“Wouldn’t it be better if we just told them we don’t have anything here?”
Better for whom? Only one man. And that’s why I repeat: Trump has not put us here by accident. He actually wants to break our system, because he and people like him only thrive in a broken system.
So he keeps pushing and pushing our system to its breaking point — where rules are for suckers, norms are for fools, basic truths are malleable and men and women of high character are banished.
This is exactly what would-be dictators try to do: Flood the zone with lies so the people trust only them and the truth is only what they say it is.
It is impossible to exaggerate what a dangerous moment this is for our country.

[ the last of us tv starters // accepting ]
Tumblr media
the fury of the reserve course students was getting closer and closer. there were rumors circulating that most of security had either fled or, even worse, been killed in the riots. the students on the other side of the fence had entered into a kind of frenzy, a few of them breaching the gate and making their way into the hallways of the main course.
inside their classroom, the door was barred. akane and nekomaru stood guard there, prepared for if anyone managed to break in. everyone was accounted for except for komaeda, who'd been missing for some time, and mikan, who no one had seen yet that day.
huddled up in a corner, chiaki stares vacantly at the opposite wall. he wants to go looking for mikan, but... until the coast is clear, it's not a good idea to go anywhere.
she manages to crack a small smile at sonia trying to cheer her up. "...yeah. it kinda seems like the reserve course students beat us to the punch, though..." what could have caused this? they'd never liked the main course students, sure, but they'd never shown any inclination toward this level of violence. if hinata had still been around, would he have joined in...?
no. there's no way he would've gotten caught up in this mess. he wasn't the type to get carried away.
"if i'm going to lose my mind with anyone..." chiaki mumbles. "...i'm glad it's you, at least."

Incredible to believe, but the absolutely wonderful, landmark, Bouncy Ball ad that was the launch campaign for Sony Bravia TVs, is about to have it's 20th Anniversary in 2025. Inspired by the positioning "Color Like No Other", Falon proposed unleashing thousands, upon thousands of colorful rubber balls into a steep San Francisco street, and Sony, to its credit, said "let's do it" The ad was ahead of its time. It was an artful stunt, that was so perfectly aligned with marketing strategy, but also with the spirit of entering a new millennium. You can watch the ad here in HD, and enjoy the lovely José González song Heartbeats.
The Drum, has a good summary of the making of here, which reads: A lot of thought went into making ‘Balls’, the 2005 Fallon ad that launched Sony’s LCD TV brand, Bravia – even if the script likely didn’t extend much beyond ‘bounce a million colorful balls down a San Francisco hill’. For starters, where do you even get a million balls?
The agency tried to order them from China, but that would take months. In the end, they made do with just 250,000 after phoning every funfair dealer in the US and emptying the shelves of toy shops. Still though, the crew – led by director Nicolai Fugslig – was determined not to rely on computer trickery to fill in any gaps. They insisted on shooting every single frame live on camera.
This involved three days of a 23-person camera crew (in body armor) hiding behind barricades and riot shields as 12 cannons (on which much of the budget was spent) discharged volley after volley of rubber balls down a steep hill toward them. It all sounds a far cry from the ad's graceful, slow-motion end product, aided by its day-dreamy soundtrack.
All drains on the hill had been taped up before shooting; between takes, a team of 50 students on roller skates swept balls from the bottom, distributing them to local children who had come to watch.
In the end, there was so much great footage that, for its first airing, Sony bought an entire ad break on Sky Sports 1, immediately before a Manchester United v Chelsea kick-off. That first two-and-a-half-minute version featured the José González song in its entirety. Digital hoardings around the pitch’s perimeter featured bouncing balls throughout the match, before the 60-second version we all know and love was shown during the halftime ad break.

Sunday | Week In Review III
Tumblr media
Sunday Week In Review III.
What a week it has been - I’ve read some great updates to some really good fanfics this week (and some I still need to reblog to the dash) and I’ve been in my mother effing Joel Miller feels - but Frankie seems to be helping 😏
Hope everyone had a good week! I’d love to hear what you enjoyed this week and if you have your own week in review you want to share that I can link here!
Side note: who was writing, or planning to write, something involving ex-Frankie on the beach? It popped into my head this morning and has not left me and no search I've done has yielded anything to the point now I think I'm making it up lol.
Disclaimer: did not get into any of my TBR fics, everything I read this week were updates to established starters or one-shots.
Truly Betty Updates This Week…
Strings IV Mood board
Bookstore (Frankie x f!Reader)
Drip (Joel Miller x Reader) warning: hints at events of TLOU2
Hangar (Frankie x f!Reader)
Fics I Enjoyed This Week…
The Locksmith Series by @oonajaeadira I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting into reading a series based on the The Thief from the Casillero del Diablo adverts. But this was a whole lot more than I expected and was such a great read. I don’t want to spoil too much, but it has just the perfect combination of magic, romance, tension and plot. This was a very enjoyable lazy Sunday morning read.
Delta Landscaping - Chapter 2 + 3 by @rhoorl okay, chapter 2? Was not expecting to be getting so teary eyed in the first half and then snorting with laughter in the second. Then the bonus of a THIRD chapter before the week was out? Jess is spoiling us with the events of Mulefall Court 🫏. I don’t want to spoil chapter 3, but it is a riot and I am eagerly waiting to find out what happens next!
The Layover - Chapter 11 by @goodwithcheese I’m in denial that there’s one chapter and an epilogue left on this. However, trust me when I say this series will lend itself to a reread once it’s done! Frankie and Reader are in some feels in this chapter and have some stuff to work through. But as ever Jules BBF extraordinaire and “get you laid” fairy godmother comes in with some wise words ♥️
Hungry Hearts - Chapter 5 by @atinylittlepain This is a permanent entry on my fics read/recommended list forever - I could wax lyrical about how Joel Miller is Springsteen coded. However, things are coming to a head here both in the summer of 86’ and in present day for Cherry and Joel. I think we’re in for a bumpy ride with the next updates but I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out! You won’t be disappointed.
Late Night Texts - Chapter 11 by @mvtthewmurdvck I had my worries about Javi & Reader as I made my way through this chapter and if this was a live action rom-com this would be the part where you shout at the TV because the happily ever after is just right there in sight only for it to be swiped away. But all is not lost because… I’m not going to give it away, go and read!
Bloom by @nothoughtsjustmeds I very much dislike flowers, each to their own, but I simply don’t get the appeal. I appreciate them at a distance and think they’re pretty, but that’s where it ends for me. However, give me a flower shop trope and I am all over it will devour them all! (don't know what this says about me, lol) This one is no different and was actually a re-read when it popped up on my dash! Joel Miller is late, it’s Mother’s Day and he’s showing up in Readers store two minutes to closing in need of help and the rest… well, I’ll let you read it because it’s such a delight.
2023 Summer Kiss Prompt #11: Daniel Harper (Wing Pit) - A Kiss After Pain by @something-tofightfor Look. I’m not afraid to admit it, I’m feral for Daniel ‘Wing Pit’ Harper, and it’s because of @something-tofightfor’s fics. Go and read them and you’ll see what I mean. While you’re there go check out their Summer Kiss Prompt’s.
That's A Real Fucking Legacy: All of You, All of Me by @wyn-n-tonic If you haven’t read the series this wraps up, I suggest you do! Like, I could word vomit on this fic for days. However, this one-shot gives Joel & reader a tender ending that while it doesn’t fix everything, it gives life to a future for them both without guilt of the origins of their relationship. This was an unexpected treat on my dash this week and I encourage you to take a moment to read this series of you haven’t.
Two Chances by @mrsquill A Joel Miller x Reader AU that has puppies, Joel and Sarah dynamics and did I mention puppies? It’s an adorable fluff piece that I hope we get to see a follow-up to!
Conversations With a Movie Star | Chapter 2 by @gnpwdrnwhiskey Hands down one of the best written Dieter's in my opinion and on top of that this is such an original idea of a story. Ava and Dieter play so well off one another and I can't wait to see how this is all going to play out. Also, I already love Desi and Lucy ❤️🦝
Fall Apart, Again | Chapter 3 by @wildemaven Okay, while on the topic of unique story ideas... this one right here! This, eurgh, I want to wrap this story in a blanket and give it a massive hug and tell it it'll be all okay. No secret I love me some good angsty fics, but there's a thin line you have to tread before it can dissolve into either a comedy of errors or just downright depressive verbage but Heidi, *chef's kiss* hits all the right notes with this story. Not going to get into much more as it is owed a reblog later today - but you cannot not get invested from the opening chapter.
March by @the-widow-miller I wasn't the only one this week in my Joel Miller feels - we both ended up posting our TLOU2 fics within days of one another and this one, eurgh, the whole thing cutting between present time and flashback and the ending? I'll let you get into this and get down deep in your Golfing feels.
Palomino | IX Warmblood by @fuckyeahdindjarin Going to admit it here, I am afraid of horses, I don't like them I think they're going to bite my hand off and yeah, so so pretty. But they frighten me. HOWEVER, this entire series has me wanting to go book a trek with the Statesmen, not only for my own Whiskey - but to witness the beautiful landscapes Cee has painted and weaved through this entire story. I also like how this ended, I'm not going to get into it because I don't want to spoil it - but if you've not read this series, you are in for a real treat!
Fics I’m Looking Forward to Reading…
Pulling from the gazillion tabs I have open that I need to move to a more formalized list that I’ll share next week if I get it done!
Shared Breaths by @frenchiereading So single dad Frankie is enrolling his daughter in your class and as the school year moves forward so does your relationship with Frankie…
Posts I Enjoyed This Week…
This Dave York character analysis thread, some interesting takes on his character and how he’s portrayed in both the film and fandom.
@rhoorl's dive into the Vanity Plates of the Delta Boys, it had me howling! Also peep the post on what cars each of the boys drive while you're there too!
Things I’ve (NOT) Enjoyed This Week…
My great idea to watch a play through of the second TLOU game (not posting spoilers) and play it while I worked. I’m an idiot. A highly emotional idiot. Also going to take @gnpwdrnwhiskey's advice to re-read the first two chapters of @oonajaeadira's Leave off Your Wandering to satisfy the head-canon I have that TLOU2 is all about Joel going to live his best life on an alpaca farm.
Things I’ve Enjoyed This Week…
All the lovely feedback I got on my dive into the Catfish pond with my Frankie fics that I was actually afraid to post, it's actually been a little overwhelming. Also the feedback on Drip, despite pulling everyone down onto the floor in my Joel Miller feels lol. Thank you all for your reblogs, comments & likes - it really means a lot ❤️
This Week’s Song…
This week it’s an album, Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska - @atinylittlepain mentioned this book, Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska (which I can’t wait to get stuck into) and so I’ve been listening to this album on repeat since.
It’s one of those albums that sticks out at from a time when I was younger where I was figuring out what I liked and not being afraid of offending others with my choices or worrying that they weren't what everyone else liked.
Other Weeks in Review I Think You Should Check Out...
@rhoorl's Week In Review (8/27/23)
If you've made it this far! Feel free to share your own recommendations or favourite things that have happened this week or what you've enjoyed! 💕

Long post......(NYT) OPINION, THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
Trump Thrives in a Broken System. He’ll Get Us There Soon.
June 13, 2023
(Photo) Damon Winter/The New York Times
(Continued) Trump debuted this strategy early on with John McCain — a veteran, a man who never broke in five-plus years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, a man of real character.
It is impossible to exaggerate what a dangerous moment this is for our country.

peyton was only young when the simian flu infected the planet, though through the fractured pieces of memory, she remembers a bit of what happened, remembers the world in parts before the quarantine zones and mass empty spaces ; it’s like a movie when looking back, disconnected, barely registering that it was her own experiences and not created by another in documentary form - peyton was travelling to america for a summer vacation to visit family members during the summer, a new experience before summer was up and the school year began. it was fun, new foods, new people, new sights - it was one of the best moments of her life and something she would brag about to her friends when going back to england. when things turned sour, it was like a downward spiral - a slow progression of things getting worse and worse.
the notion of quarantining was announced, all flights were cancelled and nobody was allowed in or out of the country, promising that travel would soon be back to normal when the flu was better understood and infection rates were under control. then, the trains stopped, taxi drivers -  before long the whole country seemed to shut down, empty shelves, closed stores, no way to get basic necessities. she remembers the fear and uncertainty of everyone around her, the whispers of her mother that it would soon get better, that WHO would have everything under control and they would be able to go back home. weeks turned into months, which brought about riots and millions of deaths, everyone who peyton was with soon got sick, the disease creating a mass death toll that only few could survive ; it seemed it wouldn’t affect her, one by one, she remembers clenching the hand of her family as she witnessed them get sick, subding to the illness, to eventually, clinging to her mothers body - screaming, crying - then… silence, peyton sitting numb, dehydrated while in a shiny office as she got put in government hands once they realised that she had nobody else. everyone was gone, everyone she loved and cared about, leaving only her.
peyton was then pushed into the system for children who had nobody else,  despite not being from the states, it was ignored due to there being little they could do - she remembers being in a room that was borderlining a jail cell, a small tv and not much else - only being allowed out for lessons, being taught basic things like maths, english and science - on the side, a few defective teachers went behind the back of those in charge of the zones and began teaching children how to hold a gun, how to shoot, ration and other survival tips, teaching them how to survive the world the way it was going. it’s here where peyton discovered a love for archery, becoming a good shot and finding comfort in a hobby that not only protected her, but helped clear mind as a way of keeping her distracted from the painful aches in chest that was left in wake of her family seemingly vanishing, like they were never there to begin with - it was exactly what she needed.
resources became limited, food became rationed in proportions that left those not in high position jobs starving, medicine was not accessible. this was only the beginning of one of the first few quarantine zones falling, rebellion sparked, people sneaking out, people causing trouble…. this , mixed in with the illness seeping
through the walls, it was chaos ; pestilence and war combining together to make one super villain,. those who weren’t killed by the flu were killed by their neighbours, by those left in charge who were supposed to keep people safe. peyton can still smell the blood on the walls, the smell of the burning corpses that were stacked up for miles in an attempt to keep one thing under control,to at least make an attempt to get the virus under control to protect those who could still think rationally. nothing worked, she remembers much of that, the riots escalating, the anger, the way humanity began to turn on itself … she remembers it all.
peyton knew it was a matter of time before the state of the zone took her out, and she had a choice to make, stay and see it through, or leave - the minute she saw one of her classmates, someone she was growing up alongside, dead on the street with blood falling from her nose, she took her leave. she bought her time, waiting for another riot to break out, sneaking out when the soldiers were distracted ; leaving from underground in the sewers and out onto the other side.  she had a backpack with basic needs in there, canned goods, bandages,  her bow and arrows and a sig sauer p320, all of it stolen.
nothing could’ve prepared her for what was outside, a barren wasteland, once overpopulated towns and cities rendered ghost towns - bodies were piling up on the street from the sick who never managed to get help, solo groups being created by others outside the government and finding their own means to survive. It became a game of survival of the fittest, only the strong survive and everyone else is meeting their demise.
CURRENT.            peyton does her best to avoid people, having had several bad experiences with them through her time alone on the road - she’s lonely, yet continues on anyway. there have been moments of wanting to end it all, on the brink of taking herself out and hoping that on the other side, her mother will be there - but that’s what's stopping her. she knows that isn’t the way, that it wouldn’t be what her family wants - no matter how appealing it sounds each time the sun rises through some grimy curtains and she’s had only an hour's sleep, she has to keep fighting - for them, because maybe there’s a reason she’s still alive… or maybe not, and it’s just her being apart of some sick joke that the universe is intent on continuing.
through the years and travels, peyton has a small journal that is written almost daily, a thick book that continues to grow, keeping track of all her emotions, fears, wants and experiences lived throughout the whole ordeal. It keeps her mind busy when on the road, and maybe if she does die, there is at least a piece of her left behind for someone else to come along and read.

Note
BTW, if you liked the Jeeves and Wooster books, and if you watch TV, and if you didn't know already: the early-nineties TV adaptations with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie are available full-length on Youtube if you search 'Jeeves and Wooster' (not legit but they've been there for like 8 years with no apparent trouble; I assume the BBC has better things to bother with) and they're genuinely excellent; it loses some of the effect of the prose, but gains Hugh Laurie's stone-cold hilarious facial expressions
So, for context: Up until about a month ago, I had read one single P.G. Wodehouse book, roughly twenty years ago. I was on a summer research assistantship in London and I was reading a lot, and it seemed like a thing to do. I remember literally none of it, aside from the fact that it was not a Jeeves & Wooster, aside from that I wasn't particularly into it, I'm not even entirely certain I finished it.
Well, about a month ago, I had a commenter (mountain_dancer, who as far as I know, is not on Tumblr) say that I wrote Byakuya and Renji with a real Wooster and Jeeves dynamic. I hadn't read any thing in ages, so at their suggestion, I decided to give The Inimitable Jeeves a try. It's not the sort of book that, like, you get into, like this is in no danger of becoming a Jeeves and Wooster blog, but it is incredibly funny. For starters, imagine being a person from the year 2300, trying to read Twitter and understand all the incomprehensible slang, because Wooster is constantly calling things "fruity" or "bally" and I'm still trying to figure out if "egg" is inherently derogatory, or if the modifier makes all the difference (e.g., "good egg" vs. "old egg" vs. "tough egg"). Secondly, the turns of phrase as simply sublime, please enjoy this exchange between Bertie and his friend Bingo when they run into each other at a club that is not their regular club:
“Hallo, face,” I said.
“Cheerio, ugly,” said young Bingo, and we settled down to have a small one before lunch.
Once a year the committee of the Drones decides that the old club could do with a wash and brush-up, so they shoo us out and dump us down for a few weeks at some other institution. This time we were roosting at the Senior Liberal, and personally I had found the strain pretty fearful. I mean, when you’ve got used to a club where everything’s nice and cheery, and where, if you want to attract a chappie’s attention, you heave a bit of bread at him, it kind of damps you to come to a place where the youngest member is about eighty-seven and it isn’t considered good form to talk to anyone unless you and he were through the Peninsular War together. It was a relief to come across Bingo. We started to talk in hushed voices.
“This club,” I said, “is the limit.”
“It is the eel’s eyebrows,” agreed young Bingo. “I believe that old boy over by the window has been dead three days, but I don’t like to mention it to anyone.”
Finally, the relationship between Wooster and Jeeves is just phenomenal. I mean, every story has basically the same construction, where Bertie gets into some scrape or a friend gets into a scrape and drags him into it, and you *know* Jeeves is going to fix it, sometimes you can even guess how Jeeves is going to fix it, and it’s a riot every time, especially when Jeeves does something to enrich himself in the process. The time he used Bertie’s friend’s girlfriend woes to ghost his girlfriend was ::chef’s kiss::, but his vendetta against Bertie’s garish spats was my favorite:
Well, there was only one thing to do, and I did it. I’m not saying it didn’t hurt, but there was no alternative.
“Jeeves,” I said, “those spats.”
“Yes, sir?”
“You really dislike them?”
“Intensely, sir.”
“You don’t think time might induce you to change your views?”
“No, sir.”
“All right, then. Very well. Say no more. You may burn them.”
“Thank you very much, sir. I have already done so. Before breakfast this morning. A quiet grey is far more suitable, sir. Thank you, sir.”
Anyway, I hesitate to say that my writing at all lives up to this standard, but suffice it to say there are similarities, and I am extremely flattered by the comparison. mountain_dancer says that in my stories, Byakuya is Bertie and Renji is Jeeves, but I honestly think it’s more like if you poured my Byakuya and Renji-- fashion sense, weird slang, unreliable narration, strongly held opinions and all-- into a cocktail shaker and poured two Green Swizzles, you might end up with Wooster and Jeeves.
BACK TO THE POINT, last week, @anza-redstar left me a different comment on a different story that I write Byakuya and Renji like Wooster and Jeeves and
Tumblr media
There are two possible explanations for how this happened:
1) I do read a fair amount of Brit lit and I watched Vicar of Dibley, and obviously Wodehouse is a very famous writer, so perhaps I have just picked up the influence second-hand? Like, I feel like there are big Wodehouse/Pratchett co-morbidities? I have read a ton of Terry Pratchett and consider him one of the biggest influences on my writing.
2) I am an American and we don’t really understand class because we are constantly pretending that it doesn’t exist. I think the Wooster & Jeeves dynamic is just the stereotype we lean on when we think about fancy people. I cannot explain this further.
BACK TO THE POINT AGAIN, Yes, I was aware there was a Fry and Laurie version. Fry and Laurie are also a thing that has inexplicably escaped my radar, like I know who they are, but when I mentioned this to Mr P, he said “Wasn’t that the guy from House?” and I said, “Yeah, but he’s been in other things. I... think he is actually a good actor?” (I have never even seen an entire episode of House, I have no idea if it’s good or not, I don’t like shows about mean people, do not @ me)
I definitely would not mind giving it a try, so thanks for the YouTube tip, although I am warning you that I will most likely forget, much like the way I have yet to watch the Jane Seymour - Patrick McGoohan version of Jamaica Inn I said I was going to watch, like, a year ago.
I almost forgot!
Apropos of ::waves hands:: all of this, please enjoy my new most cherished headcanon, which is that the reason Byakuya hates Yoruichi is because in his youth, she once pushed him into a fishpond in the service of helping someone else (unsuccessfully) secure an engagement. It would explain so much.

Why no other character besides Deku works as the main character of My Hero Academia
Deku is the only one who can be the main character of My Hero Academia. He’s one of the only people who is starting to question hero society and can understand all perspectives
Reasons on why other characters wouldn’t work: from what I see constantly people who claim that “Deku is a horrible Mc” would preach about Bakugou, Todoroki, Kirishima and Mirio being better ones instead.
Onward to why Bakugou wouldn’t work as a Mc.
Tumblr media
Now as of how his character arc is going right now Bakugou is the deurotagonist (and is made to foil with Deku) if we were to take away Deku as a entirely from being the lead (which I’m gonna assume those who say so would want him to be a side character) that would erase the empathizes on Bakugou’s atonement arc which comes with the growth he has to undergo. As of what we know about Bakugou’s personality he’s brash, smart, and a bit perceptive. He has been a gifted child ever since a young age and people have always told him how amazing he is. For him to have OFA from the start of the series would just enforce that narrative (which from what we know already in canon wasn’t good for him as a character) it would be hard for the audience to see Bakugou go through any type of changes since OFA would be with him from the start and his early introduction showcased that he has grown up with everyones validation and them telling him that he is the best. Having OFA will just feed into that toxicity that hero society had engrained into his head.
Bakugou from the beginning of the series was someone who only saw his perspective on the matter (in a way a bit selfish) being able to understand those around you and fight against the impossible in terms of how cruel society is a theme in mha. He started off as someone who just wanted to win all his battles and be better then All Might (which again taking Deku out of the picture he would have never learned the importance of saving those around him).
Considering he already had the qualifications of becoming a hero since the beginning what type of challenges would he have to go thought? He never faced any kind of backlash for being quirkless or not being good enough.
In all honestly Bakugou fits his role perfectly as a deurotoganist so it’s hard for me to truly understand how having him as the main character would make the series 10 times better. In the case scenario that Deku is a side character the character type that we would be getting is his pre development self (basically season one Bakugou)
Summary (bullet point format)
Bakugou:
Without Deku involved as the Mc he would never be the guy he is today
The Mc version we would be getting is his pre development self
Bakugou is a emotionally constipated character which wouldn’t work for the role of Mc
Their would be no need for him to have OFA considering that everyone around him already praised him for having a quirk. It would in a way be handed to him and also feed into Bakugou’s ego that he is the best
Kirishima Eijirou:
Tumblr media
This one won’t be long to explain as Kirishima’s personality kind of embodies a typical shounen male lead. He’s said to be one of the mood makers of the class in canon (as according to Horikoshi). In the canon storyline we have gotten his backstory during the Overhaul arc. He was a child who struggled to stand up against the villains (as we have seen Ashido do so in one of the flashbacks) he lacked confidence (which you could say is a good starter) but like Bakugou he never had to face the consequences of being told that he couldn’t be a hero because he was quirkless.
Although it would be a bit hard to tell what Kirishima would do if he were put into a situation where he would have to fight a villain and try to see their viewpoint (as we have seen from Deku and Gentle Criminal). I can add that Kirishima idolized Crimson Riot not All Might (so that in itself wouldn’t have made sense if he were to have OFA since their is no connection between the two).
One last thing but his self condience issue that he had while growing up was already tackled and dealt with in the Overhaul arc while he was fighting to protecting Fatgum (his mentor) and this already paid off for him since we have seen him save Ashido in the war arc against Gigantomachia.
Kirishima:
Didn’t idolize All Might so the audience wouldn’t really be invested in the connection he could have with him if he were to have OFA or how that starter point of idolizing someone could turn into a genuine bond.
Never was told that he couldn’t be a hero because of something he didn’t have (which that core element allowed fans to see the struggles that Deku went threw)
Not enough material of Kirishima’s perspective in terms of villains and how he feels about hero society
His character archetype if anything would be just playing it safe since their are plenty of goofy type of characters who are usually the main character in shounen series.
Mirio Togata:
Tumblr media
Now when it comes to Mirio he’s bubbly, accepting, and inviting. Nothing wrong with his personality being explored as a main character. I’d say the issue with him being the lead would lie with the fact that if he were to step up and take on Deku’s role he wouldn’t really question the wrongs of hero society and in a way would be another All Might in that regard. What we do know is that he was a student that was under Sir Nighteye (and we all know how poorly Nighteye treated Deku in the Overhaul arc) their may be a chance that Mirio might adopt some of Nighteye’s thoughts on hero society despite being the positive, bubbly sunshine that he is. From how canon depicts Mirio he is apart of the current big 3; and was shown to be loved by everyone. From a narrative standpoint their wouldn’t be much to explore with him if he were to be the main character since he had no inner turmoil. Another point i’d like to bring up with Mirio is how he lost his quirk to Overhaul while Deku defeated him. Mirio’s fight with Overhaul was the first big fight he had in the series and considering that some people make claims that Mirio would have a better handle of OFA over Deku I just want to remind everyone that he would be more likely to have that power taken from him (which that kind of worries me). Lastly I’d like to point out that Mirio himself dosen’t face any internal conflict or have any major player that makes the audience want to explore more of his character. He kind of takes everything at face value and dosen’t question any of it which (if the theme of hero society being corrupt and going to be broken down into a healthier one is gonna happen in this series that already debunks Mirio making any type of change to whats happening to the villains).
Mirio:
Since Mirio’s introduction he has been well liked by everyone. It would be hard narratively speaking to have a main character who does not start out with a struggle (even if that hardship isn’t so huge)
His viewpoints of hero’s society would be similar to All Might as he would not challenge the corruption that the story heavily showcases in the war arc
Mirio dosen’t face any internal conflict or have anything that makes the audience want to dive more into his character (or to learn more about his thought process)
His first major fight being against Overhaul caused him to lose his quirk so it would be hard for me to believe that he can actually keep OFA without losing it.
Todoroki Shouto:
Tumblr media
Now onward to my last person on the list. I haven’t heard to many people try to claim that Shouto should be the main character but I have seen some sad takes on it. Anyway similar to Bakugou and how involved Deku was in his atonement arc. Shouto would have never been the character we all know and love without Deku fighting him at the Sports Festival and making the claim that his “power is his.” enforcing that the quirk Shouto has is his own and not his father (which was something that we’ve seen Shouto struggle with during that arc). Now from the perspective that we sideline Deku and that he isn’t a main character we can safety say that the version of his character that we would be getting instead of his current one is in Sero’s words “early roki.”. Meaning we would have a main character who appears cold and showing a resentment towards his father (remember Deku’s involvement allowed Shouto to change as a person and for the audience to see his story unfold).
Also considering All Might needs to be present in this situation we did see Shouto watching him on tv with Rei holding him in his lap. He does admire All Might (but not to the extent that Bakugou and Midoriya do). I’d also like to add that Shouto was one of the only two students that got in U.A through recommendations (meaning U.A already saw his talents so giving him OFA wouldn’t really mean much if his potential has already been seen by others beforehand).
Now i do admit that having a character who is a victim of abuse take the reigns of the story is interesting I mean Horikoshi does a great job showcasing him and his family (and I do believe that he will know about OFA and that Deku will be the one to tell him).
Shouto:
His admiration for All Might wasn’t really explored enough (we do know that he looked up to him as a hero figure when he was a child but his love for him does not go as far as Bakugou or Midoriya)
Considering that Deku played a big part in Todoroki accepting himself for who he is and the quirk that he had.... the version of him that we would have had as a main character would be early roki
Similar to Bakugou he already has a quirk from the beginning so their would be no need for All Might to give Shouto his power
Shouto was one of the two students who gotten into U.A through recommendations so it wouldn’t make sense to not see the main character’s struggles from the beginning (as we had seen Deku take the entrance exam the first time having a quirk
Why Deku works best as the main character of the series?
Tumblr media
Now I know what you guys are thinking “there are many thread on this discussion so why are you doing it?” I’ve decided to tackle this topic since this redundant argument keeps popping up despite Deku proving to the fandom how amazing he is as our main character.
Izuku:
Since Deku’s introduction in the series we have known that he can overthink at times and has written about all the types of heroes in his notebook (including their strengthens and weakness) meaning he’s perceptive and well informed about the world around him
His fight with Gentle Criminal showed fans that he can understand different types of perspectives while still fighting for the side of justice
Along with the second point this is such a good trait that would benefit him in his future confrontations with Shigaraki (who is the main villain of the series)
He has showcased time and time again how strong he has become and as fans we got to see him start off as a young quirkless boy whose dreams were merely just dreams to a boy holding the weight of the world in his grasp.
Him being emotional is just a bonus because he teaches young boys that its okay to cry and unlike how shounen usually is with having most of their main male characters just carry the “tough men act.” Deku embraces that side of him to be vulnerable and teach people that crying isn’t a sign of weakness but a sign that he is human
Young Izuku (middle school him) was shown to have parallel All Might when he was younger.
He is a main character who can make such an impact on other people (examples being Bakugou, Todoroki, and even characters like NightEye who once believed that the future couldn’t be changed)
This is my first serious post guys. My next post will tackle whether the series will conclude with the wonder duo (Bakugou and Deku) or origin trio (Bakugou, Deku, and Todoroki) I am talking about future hero combinations just so everyone knows.

Why Arcane Was Surprisingly Good
https://ift.tt/3r6e6Cs
If you haven’t already checked out Arcane on Netflix, you really need to put it high on your to do list. Yes, it’s based on the world and characters of League of Legends, one of the planet’s most popular battle arena games, but that’s almost irrelevant. Somehow this animated series manages to be amazing in its own right, pleasing both players and those who know nothing of Jinx, Vi, Jayce, or any other champion from the game. How on Earth did Riot Games manage it?
On paper, it seems like films or TV shows based on certain video games should be guaranteed successes. If the developers have already gone through the trouble of building a massive, complex world like Azeroth of Warcraft, all the writers have to do is give one of the playable characters a hero’s journey, and it’s off to the races. But for some reason, almost everyone who has tried it, from Hitman to Resident Evil, has come up short, churning out schlock that’s derivative, overblown, or filled with inane dialogue.
Arcane took a different approach. Instead of trying to encompass the many realms of Runeterra (the planet that didn’t even appear in League of Legends lore until the game had been around for five years), the Netflix series centers solely on the Utopian city of Piltover, only hinting at other civilizations and political powers that appear in the game. So is this singular focus the reason why the story holds together so well?
If so, how does that explain the choice to tell the backstory of not one champion, not even two or three, but several playable characters all at once? At first it may seem like Arcane is the tale of the sisters Vi and Jinx, and they are definitely central to the story. But this is equally the origin of the misguided idealist Jayce, and the evolution of the cybernetic Viktor unfolds with magnificent subtlety and is still ongoing. And dancing around the edges with their own complex depths waiting to be explored are Caitlyn and Ekko, and that’s just for starters!
It shouldn’t work! Cynics watching a League of Legends cutscene starring Jinx will immediately see a cartoonish Harley Quinn knockoff, and in the sharpshooter Caitlyn they’ll see a smirking Lolita mad hatter. But in Arcane, Jinx gets a fully realized traumatic childhood and a manipulative evil mentor to boot. Caitlyn quickly goes from a daughter with something to prove to her wealthy parents to a deeply sympathetic, devoted companion to Vi who seeks justice for the less fortunate of Piltover’s undercity.

Arcane also tells a richly political tale of a city already troubled by social inequality and injects it with the catalyst that is Hextech, a merging of magical and scientific advancement, across the better part of a decade. The Runeterra of League of Legends is steeped in magic, the supernatural, and fantasy elements galore, but the Netflix adaptation only gives us glimpses of mages like Ryze and alchemists like Singed (champions in their own right in the game) and then places them on the periphery in favor of a richly layered steampunk atmosphere.
And this is steampunk done right! There are actual punk elements in Arcane, not just a magical Victorian aesthetic dressed up with gears and goggles. Ekko and his Firelights zoom about the undercity on flying skateboards; Jinx’s explosives are decorated with fluorescent skulls; and many of the crime lords sport mohawks and mechanical prosthetics worthy of the Lovecraftian world League of Legends has been known to pull from. It’s a cosplayer’s dream come true!
All of this is to say that the reason Arcane is so magnificent is that it nails each of these crucial storytelling notes. The worldbuilding is spot on but doesn’t try to bite off more than it can chew, only bringing in citizens of Noxus and the concept of the nation of Zaun at the very end. The characters are perfectly rendered, both in their nuanced expressions thanks to some amazingly artistic animation from Fortiche and in their beautifully voice work performances from the likes of Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye) and Ella Purnell (Star Trek: Prodigy). And the complex backstories are a true credit to showrunners Christian Linke and Alex Yee and their team of writers.
What’s even more impressive is that Arcane still manages to sneak in what other video game adaptations tend to over-emphasize: hero shots of Jayce with his hammer, Vi with her gauntlets, and Jinx with her shark-shaped rocket launcher, Fishbones. The beauty of these sequences featuring weapons that League of Legends players will immediately recognize and expect is that they are merely incidental examples of Hextech, not important innovations in and of themselves. Brilliantly done!

So do yourself a favor and watch Arcane immediately if you haven’t already. Heck, rewatch it! The series has more nuanced performances, even from that beloved furball Heimerdinger, than most live action dramas, never mind video game adaptations. Can television break the movie world’s gaming curse in time for upcoming series such as HBO’s The Last of Us and Paramount’s Halo? If they follow Arcane’s example, they could win legions of fans who have never even picked up a game controller.
