“Um,” the firefighter said, his gaze dropping for a moment. He was frowning slightly, too, but it looked a lot more concerned than upset. “I... here.” Bafflingly, he held a cup of steaming takeaway coffee toward her. “It’s for you. You’ve... been out here for a while.”

Brief description of scene: Zuko approaches Katara who is holding the back door of the ambulance door open. Katara hold an expression of annoyance due to her last encounter with Zuko while Zuko is trying to apologize with a cup of coffee. 

It was a blast working alongside @risemaclay to illustrate scenes from We Saw A Spark. Please check out the artwork created by @risemaclay for this fic, it’s truly fantastic! Also, big thanks to the story’s writer for sparking and inspiring creativeness and being so encouraging throughout the process.

Double update because I wanted to, and nobody stopped me.

Chapter Five: Zuko contemplates his life and relationship with Katara just before a fun day out takes a turn for the grim. An unexpected confrontation with a person best forgotten forms a catalyst for the conversation that's been brewing between Katara and Zuko.

Chapter Six: Katara and Zuko talk. Finally.

Another huge thanks to @marijayne-writing for beta reading and wrangling me, to @logicalalo for the lovely chapter 2 art and @risemaclay for the artwork that finds its home in chapter six.

FYI, I updated the tags, and while I tried not to make anything too graphic, some parts at the beginning may make you squeamish. Nothing like Stranger Things' Season 4 levels of graphic, but still reminiscent in a way.

Lastly, you're not going to like me for this cliffhanger (but just wait until you see chapter 19's - y'all are going to be MAD.)

AKA, the chapter in which Toph and Suki channel their inner Rachel and Phoebe to figure out what these two pining idiots in denial are hiding, like in the episode of Friends when they find out about Chandler and Monica.

Aang could only stare, rendered speechless as he watched his most loyal companion who he’d given up mastery of the Avatar State for - his forever girl - choosing to side with the Fire Prince instead.

It was all too clear now exactly where Katara’s true loyalties lied, and they weren’t with him.

Or, Aang finally awakens onboard a strange ship a month after the fall of Ba Sing Se to a new world, one where both the Avatar and a traitorous Fire Prince have been declared dead by the Fire Nation.

Now, the pair have no choice but to put aside their differences to form an uneasy alliance. The Avatar must learn to finally let go of his attachment to Katara, while the Fire Prince finds himself surrounded by former enemies who’d just as soon see him dead...

This is based off that post about the intimacy of vintage couple’s portraits... The shoulder-kissing portraits screamed (or lovingly whispered) Sukka to me, so I went to Rise with the idea, and she captured the vibe SO perfectly! I can’t get enough of this piece. It gives me butterflies in my stomach every time I look at it. And I look at it almost constantly. 

@risemaclay​’s commissions are open, folks! Check out this post for details. I highly, highly recommend working with her. I mean...just look at that Sukka art!! And it was such a pleasure to go back and forth on ideas, and to see her process and all the things she came up with that I didn’t think to ask for but absolutely loved (like the matching braids!! 🥺🥺🥺).

Hi Rise! Thanks for the ask! Happy to chat about Taang, because you're right, we do deserve more Taang in our lives!

That's a really good question, and I feel like it could be a number of things, depending on how they get together and what they've already talked about throughout their relationship.

For a first fight, I can see them arguing about Aang's duty as the Avatar. That seems like an issue that probably stays with Aang for most of his life is just him trying to balance his life as the Avatar, his role as the last airbender, and his own desires for his personal life. It's a delicate balance, and I can see Toph pushing him to lean toward one role over the other, trying to help him prioritize his responsibilities, and he just gets mad about it.

It's a lot of pressure, and his instinct tells him to run when he's under pressure, so Toph getting on his case about his life probably pushes him toward bursting a few times. He'd yell at her that she doesn't understand, perhaps complains that he can't handle it, stuff like that. Toph is just trying to help him, but she's so straightforward and direct with Aang that sometimes it rubs him the wrong way. And when he fights back, she digs her heels in and doubles down on her arguments. I think her instinct would be to stand her ground, to counter all of Aang's arguments until he caves, because she doesn't lose to Twinkletoes, even if she loves him. Her competitiveness gets the best of her during the fight, and she forgets the reason she's arguing with him in the first place.

Honestly though, I feel like this type of argument is one that is short lived. They both get furious quickly, but after a beat, they learn to think about the other's perspective and can get past their troubles.

Another argument could be one that is left to simmer for years but then there comes a time and things just boil over. I feel like while Aang never explicitly states that he needs to have children to repopulate the Air Nation, I think it's this cloud that hangs over them, whether they want it to or not.

Aang just wants kids because he loves kids, but of course, if Toph says that they're not having kids, he wouldn't push her. He'd be sad, but it wouldn't sway his decision to stay with Toph. Toph probably gets it in her head that Aang says he doesn't want/need kids, but that he's lying (she knows he's not, but a part of her always thinks this). She shuts him out whenever the conversation comes up, because while she's never told him that they're never having kids and that she doesn't want kids, she doesn't necessarily think that she'd be a great mother.

It's a lot of internal conflict on Toph's end that has her pushing him away and maybe even trying to break off their relationship, but Aang learned from the best about how to be stubborn like the earth. All he does during this time is try to convince her that he doesn't need kids to be happy, just her.

Eventually, they do talk about it and start to have a conversation around kids, but it just takes them a while, and the argument is prolonged simply because Toph shuts the conversation down whenever Aang brings it up for the first few years.
