The creator of Hamtaro, Ritsuko Kawai, has said in interviews that she supports fans who ship same-gender pairings of her characters, and that she believes love can take many forms. She also retweeted a fanartist who's a trans girl on International Woman's Day and told transphobes who said it's wrong to retweet "male" artists on IWD, "of course this is a girl. This is my little sister."

Hamtaro's mangaka (it was a manga before it became an anime), Ritsuko Kawai, has stated Hiroko (Laura in the English dub) and Kana's bond "can be viewed however you wish" and "love can happen between many kinds of people". So if LO does ship them, while it's not canon, it's supported by the creator, which I think is nice, since some show creators in the early 00's aren't nearly so open minded (coughButchHartmancough). Ritsuko also retweeted fanart of Maria/Hiroko (Laura) on a date once.

that's some wholesome news! i love it when creators embrace fandom and different interpretations, it makes it so much more fun to participate. i don't plan to get into hamtaro but i'm glad people who are have the okay of the author.

While not as nightmare-ish as previous examples, the Japanese to US cover art for Ham-Hams Unite is really really sad....

Japan got a SUPER CUTE drawing made by the creator of Hamtaro herself, Ritsuko Kawai.

Vs other territories where it’s just a stock vector a clip art.

It does the job, but still. The other one is so much better.
