For any Victorians following me who are impacted by the floods, remember, never enter flood waters, you don't know how deep it is or what's in it. It only takes 15cm to float a car.
When it comes to sandbagging;
Bag it; have sandbags ready to and in place to protect water from entering your property
Block it; block all entries into the house, this includes drain, toilets, and doorways
Lift it; lift all valuables as high a possible
Tumblr media
If you are in danger call 000, if you have a flood related non-emergency (say water entering house, but you're not trapped or at immediate risk) call the SES on 132 500.
The following information is what is presented on the Vic Emergency website
If anyone is wondering about friends or family
The following areas are advised to Evacuate Immediately

Mt Emu Creek to Skipton
Laanecoorie to Loddon Weir
Campaspe River Lake Eppalock to Barnadown
Goulburn River Lake Eildon to Seymour
The following areas are alerted as too late to leave

SRC (2) - Day 5
Wednesday, 16th August 2023
Wind SE 2mph                 Sunny day with occasional cloud                             Temp 24°C
Distance sailed 3.75 miles
A quiet night. Awoke to sunshine which is always good. After breakfast took our very damp cover off and made ready to sail. Slipped our mooring at around 0930 and hoisted our mainsail. We hoped to sail, with the flood, up to Loddon but about 100 metres up the Chet the wind died completely. Dropped our main and continued under engine. Picked up a mooring at Pye’s Mill. Walked into town to re-provision.
Lazy afternoon. Early evening spoilt when three feral children, about 10 years of age came to the river despite swimming being prohibited. They interfered with passing canoes and paddle boards. They were foul mouthed and abusive. We ate supper and then went for a walk. Came back to the boat for a game of Yahtzee. We won a game each and then tied the decider. Turned in around 2200

worsening weather in Melbourne; Icoccas eyes rise up as Murray; Evacuation orders are in effect
There is growing confidence within Kerang that the city will avoid significant flood damage from rising Loudoun River, with local emergency services backed by news that the small town of Abyan South has remained above water. The Epin South has the last water gauge downstream from Kerang and is the best clue as to where the Loddon River will peak in the coming days unless there is more heavy rain. Kerang locals watch the Loudoun River rise as the Patchel Bridge on the Murray Valley Highway remains closed due to flooding.attributed to him:Eddie Jim In 2011, when a devastating summer flood inundated 41 homes and five businesses in Kerang, the town of Abyan South was inundated. This time around, a concerted effort by emergency services and local volunteers has resulted in sandbags being placed in every home and construction of water barriers. Loudoun peaked in Abyan South on Thursday at 3.47 metres, 100 millimeters lower than the peak level recorded in 2011. “We’ve saved six or seven homes from collapsing or having any kind of damage,” said Jack Hewitt, president of CFA Abyan South. “We carried it. We beat it.” Loudoun River in Kerang.attributed to him:Eddie Jim CFA Sector Leader Michael Masters, who is coordinating Kerang’s flood preparations, said the success of Appin South has added a level of comfort in Kerang about what the city is likely to face over the next few days. “It’s a very slow-moving flood event compared to 2011,” he said. “I think people are more prepared this time around. This is partly because of the 2011 experience but also there is a growing awareness that this can happen to us. In general, people have a good understanding of what will happen to them. They are confident that the town will be protected and that the outlying areas are taking appropriate measures.” Commander Masters said the focus of Kerang’s preparations was the protection of critical infrastructure, such as power grids, communication networks, drinking water and sanitation. He said that despite media reports and public perceptions that the town is cut off by floodwaters, most roads other than the main highway connecting Bendigo and Swan Hill remain open in and out of the city. Thursday Doors in Norfolk
Thursday Doors in Norfolk
Loddon is a picturesque village on the edge of the Norfolk Broads. It has expanded to the north across the River Chet to merge with another village, Chedgrave. Last weekend, I took some photographs of All Saints Church. A Christian community has been meeting in this medieval church for over a thousand years. The porch has been added recently. Note the flint stones. Inside the porch, there is a…

Three nights afloat
Wednesday, 31st August 2022
Wind ENE 14mph                               Cloudy bright                                    Temp 21°C
Distance sailed 0 miles
Arrived at the boat at 1645. Took the covers off, loaded supplies and filled the water tank. Put on the camping cover. A walk to the river and along the bank toward Hardley Cross. Then back for supper, the crossword and we turned in at 2230
Thursday, 1st September 2022
Wind ENE 17mph                       Blue sky and sunshine                           Temp 22°C
Total distance sailed 16.19 miles
Breakfast. Cover off. Roof and boom down and a reef in! We turned at the end of the dyke, never easy and then motored towards the river. Although we touched bottom at the ridge at the entrance we managed to plough through and then hoisted sail as we left the dyke.
We had a rollicking good reach/run all of the way up the Yare to Coldham Hall, surprising many a cruiser hirer as we zipped past them. Dropped our sails opposite Coldham Hall and motored on to Bargate (Surlingham Broad) where we dropped the mud weight and enjoyed a coffee.
After coffee, raised the mud weight and motored back to the river and up the Coldham Hall reach until we were clear of the trees. Raised our reefed sail and then had a lumpy, bumpy beat homewards. It was a strong wind and the gusts were really vicious. I wondered how long Mrs Crew would be able to hang on; it was on the very edge of sailing for her. She kept going until we reached Langley and, by the time that we dropped our sails in the shelter of the trees there, she had tacked and hauled in our large jib 69 times! No wonder she was tired. We motored the last couple of miles back to our temporary home in Hardley Dyke and had a late lunch.
We then drove home, showered and drove into the city to meet friends for a pizza in Norwich before a Jay Rayner show at the Halls. Afterwards drove back to the boat and had a very late turn in at 2330
Friday, 2nd September 2022
Wind E 12mph            Lovely sunny day with occasional high cloud          Temp 24°C
Total distance sailed 4.85 miles
Neither of us slept well. I had a particularly bad night. Although it was a very bright, sunny start to the day our cover was very wet. We had to put it away after breakfast still very damp. Turned at the end of the dyke and motored out, hoisting sail once we reached the river. We had left yesterday’s reef in and, although we could have easily coped without it, we were very comfortable as we beat downriver and so left it in.
At the narrow entrance to the river Chet we had to gill around waiting for two hesitant hirers to clear the entrance and then we set off up the river. It was mainly running with a bit of reaching and a couple of sections where we were hard on the wind. It was great to able to sail the whole length of the river. It is pre-pandemic since we last managed to sail the whole way to the Pyes Mill moorings.. Dropped our sails as we approached the moorings and came alongside.
After lunch, a walk into town to buy some gas for the heat knife and to scout for breakfast tomorrow. In the afternoon I had odd jobs to do on the boat and Mrs Crew read. I also had a short sleep yo make up for last night. Supper, another walk and then we turned in at 2200
Saturday, 3rd September 2022
Wind SE 12mph              Sunny day with occasional cloud                       Temp 24°C
Total distance sailed 12.63 miles
Walk into town for breakfast. If we are in Beccles it is always Twyfords; if it is Loddon it is The Terrace. Both do nice breakfasts and both have nice garden to eat them in. Once our bellies were full it was back to the boat for the usual, cover off, roof down, boom down drill. The wind was bang on the nose so there was no chance that we should be able to sail back to the Yare today. Under engine then for the 45 minute trip but, surprisingly, we saw kingfisher. When we were sailing yesterday we didn’t see one; under noisy motor today we saw several.
Once we reached the Yare we hoisted sail, having shaken the reef out, and then turned and ran/ reached as far as Hardley Mill. Here we turned and beat back all of the way to the Reedham lay-by pontoon where we turned and ran once more, this time with the tide, to Hardley Dyke, our temporary home. It had been good to have a final play on these wide, relatively empty, southern rivers. We dropped sail and motored to our berth. Squared all away, put her summer covers on and drove home.

Cities are already flooded get ready for more
“We are on hold until the information gets through the chain of command,” he said. Williams said massive cleanup efforts have continued in the borough, but many homes are currently uninhabitable. Flood waters devastated Rochester last weekend.attributed to him:Justin McManus He said there is an urgent need for temporary housing while the homes are being repaired. “With the scale of the destruction in some of these homes right now, who knows how long it will last until they are livable,” he said. “Temporary housing will be of paramount importance in this city.” To the northwest, the town of Kerang is preparing for floods from the Loudon River. loading However, there is growing confidence within Kerang that the city will avoid major flood damage, with local emergency services backed by news that the small southern town of Abyan has remained above water. The Epin South has the last water gauge downstream from Kerang and is the best clue as to where the Loddon River will peak in the coming days, unless there is more heavy rain. In 2011, when a devastating summer flood inundated 41 homes and five businesses in Kerang, the town of Abyan South was inundated. Mayor Charlie Gillingham said the Loudoun had risen 200mm in the past 24 hours. loading He said widespread vegetation growth is slowing down the river, which is expected to peak at the end of the week. “The water is going very slowly because of the heavy growth we’ve seen this spring,” he said. “We have some great crops that have been completely smashed.” Authorities issued an emergency warning to Kerang that it was too late to leave. But Gillingham said some roads remain open. Some residents have already left the town after warnings it might be cut off for two weeks. Gillingham said most stores remain open, but may reduce trading hours in preparation for the looming flood. However, he hoped that the town’s dam would help avert disaster. “This rain is expected to go away,” he said. “We don’t want any rain.” The Morning Edition newsletter is our guide to the most interesting daily stories, analysis and insights. A Perfectly Pint-Sized, Art Deco Sydney Pad!
This one-bedroom apartment in an art deco block in Sydney’s Kensington is owned by interior architect Sophie Bowers and fashion stylist Josh Climpson – and it’s the epitome of compact city living! With an innovative floorplan (expertly manipulated by Sophie) that saw unnecessary walls removed and banquette seating cleverly installed, living is easy without being cramped. Even the couple’s pup is pint-sized!

A Personality-Filled Off-The-Plan Apartment
Just because it’s small doesn’t mean it can’t be maximalist! Throwing it right back to January 2020 (a simpler time!), Imogen Milford’s Fitzroy apartment is filled with pieces from all her favourite local artists. Where there’s not a plant there’s a ceramic vase by Tantri Mustika or a painting by Sophie Perez. Big colours and bold furniture make this family home a small-footprint treasure chest.

A Coastal Home That Does More With Less!
Perched on the idyllic Bellarine Peninsula, Harriet Birrel’s (aka Natural Harry) handmade home might be tiny but it’s surrounded by acres of luscious coastal land. At just 40 square metres, nearly every feature has a dual purpose; for example, the wardrobe is also the bathroom, a stand-up desk doubles as a bookshelf, and the kitchen includes Harriet’s study. This is hardworking design at its finest, but the rewards are unparalleled!

A Designer’s ‘Curated Maximalist’ Apartment in Sydney
We’re big Jono Fleming fans around here, and once you see his place you’ll see why we love his work so much! Since moving into his Waterloo apartment in 2015, the stylist and designer has been steadily creating an art and plant-filled haven reflective of his vibrant personality. Jono’s immaculate styling proves an off-the-plan apartment can still have oodles of individuality!

A Florist’s Secluded Bush Cabin Is On The Market!
We wouldn’t usually feature a for-sale home in a round-up of favourite homes of the year, but this one was too good to resist! Florist Katie Marx and her husband, Greg, built this cabin in the Hepburn shire from scratch, including all the furniture inside it. Everything including the bathroom tiling, kitchen table, outdoor stonework, joinery, staircases and the shower drain hole (!) has been custom designed and crafted by Greg. Located just 40m from the banks of the Loddon River, the secluded hideout preferences access to the natural surrounds at every opportunity.

A Tiny Handmade Home Built By A Father-Daughter Duo!
Camilla Walker flew the coop thirteen years ago, only to land back in it again – in a good way! After more than a decade jumping between sharehouses and continent-hopping, she finally felt the urge to settle down. Buying a property wasn’t really a viable option, so she had to think outside the box.
Located at the bottom of her parents’ garden in Melbourne’s north, Camilla and her dad Patrick built this tiny home by hand between September 2019 and April of this year. Over those eight months, the Walkers did everything themselves – drilling, jig-sawing, hammering, and painting – until the tiny, cosy cabin-on-wheels came to life.
This was one of our favourite stories of the year!

Twyford on Loddon
flickr
Twyford on Loddon by Vladimir Dimitroff Via Flickr: Found a forgotten high vantage point for a 'nearly-drone' shot of our otherwise very flat and low-rise locality. And the name is just Twyford, but the Loddon river (a Thames tributary) flows through it, so we can sound 'posh' or distinguish ourselves from the other Twyfords - half a dozen in England and a couple in Ireland...

What’s in a Name?
The twin villages of Loddon and Chedgrave have ancient roots. Both are listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, that great asset register commissioned by that great asset stripper, William the Conqueror. Bill the Bastard wanted to know how much tax he could squeeze out of his newly acquired kingdom.
