It's so boring I don't even care enough to hate Barchie anymore (and I used to hate them with a passion).

Terrible finale for a terrible show and such a shame how people try say oh it was campy or oh Roberto subverted a regular teen drama and didn't give you end games even tho he did for three freaking couples like I swear please bugheads varchie and choni hell even people from them other ships write some good story's don't let show we love end as a tragedy #r

The thing that was already pretty clear but the final season is really solidifying is that the writers of this show truly have nothing to say about these characters. They are just sticking their finger to the wind trying to get a sense of the interests of an audience they no longer understand

I am feeling so incredibly disheartened with #Riverdale at the moment.. it has gone from being my favourite show and something that I use to look forward to watching each week to something that just makes me feel sad and incredibly nostalgic. Also, I know fictional characters are suppose to change, develop, etc but.. I just miss #Bughead so darn freaking much…
Betty and Jughead getting together and their friendship dynamic with Archie/Veronica/Jughead/Betty was the reason why I loved watching the show in the first place…
Additionally, unlike the comic books where two women constantly chasing after a ‘perfect’ red haired stallion who craves female attention; I really liked that Roberto took a different approach. In seasons 1-4 Betty got her own story and actually HAD her own identity outside of Archie Andrews.
Betty didn’t get the ‘love’ she had always fantasised about while growing up, but she did find something greater: the love she actually needed in an unlikely place. Also, Jughead Jones did not hold Betty up to unrealistic standards and he loved Betty for exactly who she was. She never had to pretend or censor herself with Jughead. Ever.
Anyway, sad rant over.

no idea why my algorithm thought i wanted to watch a writing advice video but i got curious and wanted to see how many points of failure rvd hopped on in its run and i'm bored so here we go:
Tumblr media
ahh. yes. well. half points to establishing it before, uh, doing whatever they did to it for more than the first half. video dude straight up says changing the direction half way through pisses the audience off which...seems legit so far.
(shout out to the b/as who used to argue with me that the genre didn't change and also didn't know the difference between theme and genre. stay in school, kids)
Tumblr media
oof. uhm. you know, i'm sure it's fine.
oh no, ha, starting think this video is about the rvd writers personally. "you don't want to promise them something fast paced right off the bat then nothing happens for the rest of the story until the very end." one would think, video dude. one would think.
(#3 lends itself more to novel writing but i'd like to give a shout out to dropped plots)
Tumblr media
while he's giving very good advice about presenting villains as inept only when interacting with the main character, i can't stop thinking about archie and the bear.
it was a fucking bear against a teenager who looks like he learned to tie his shoes in the same week he learned to be a boxer, roberto.
shout out to the king of rvd villains, tho. hiram, you will always be famous if not totally unsuccessful in your plans thwarted by literally everyone who gives it more than 5 minutes of thought.
Tumblr media
would like to submit also deciding on a cliffhanger ending with no forethought about what it means and what's to come. see: the black hood. retconning the end of s6 to change how s7 starts.

okay so after I reblogged a couple bughead gifsets yesterday I got hate in my askbox, actual death threats and it's the same person who sent me stuff on anon last year but they couldn't do that this time because I've had anon off since then! listen I understand shipping a couple so passionately I've done it but tearing a person down because god forbid they multiship or have different opinions is just ridiculous and this is why I hate shipwars!! everyone knows bhva are my otps and I also ship barchie if you don't like it there's blacklist/filter and it's not that hard to scroll past I do it all the time!! I already have depression and anxiety and I've almost committed suicide before so these messages and last year's messages brought all that pain and memories back I had moved in from and these days my depression and anxiety is at an all time high because I miss my dad so much ugh anyways sorry for the ramble but thank you for the rvd mutuals who actually respect me and my ships (lourdes/jess/becca/lana/callie/cher/elsbeth/justine/maria/other becca and etc) ily all smmmm!!!!! I did block the person, the only good thing is they showed their face so I could block them but ugh

Honestly, if any character deserves to die not in another parallel universe, possibly in the 50s, and never came back to life. Everyone forgot about him including the bear would be Archie.
The writers get their heroic ending. The hero, in their eyes, is dead. The other characters rejoice because he is the worst, and they must keep making him feel good afraid to bruise his ego. Now they can drop the act breathe, and get back to normal, for Archiekins is dead.
The girls are happy because whatever potion he bought from Cheryl to be the Stepford wives around him is broken, but Cheryl will say it was her Momsy.
Uncle Frank, god, he can die too. I don't count him as a main, though. If anything, it will be Midge dying in childbirth from having Fangs baby, so Toni and Fangs decide to raise it.
I'd say let it be Alice and Archie, either one, but knowing these writers, we can't bet on that.
I'd say Jughead he'd always sacrifice himself for his friends, but you know what? He deserves to live to thrive, and he's done it enough, but if he needs to, he will, and he'll be okay with never coming back, no matter the time frame. However, if he finally finds love and it works, and they kill him or his lover, that's just cruel. Would the writers do this to Jughead? Absolutely.

I think I figured out Betty's storyline in s7.
It was officially established by canon in s6 that Archie is vanilla in sex. And probably Betty was so sexually frustrated that now in the 50s her only thought is sexual satisfaction. Poor Betty. When you get back to the real timeline, buy yourself a vibrator. Or two.

I’ve solved your problem, RAS!
I was talking with my friend the other day and I’ve solved RAS’ problem of what to write for the series finale of Riverdale. Since apparently he still hasn’t written it yet with the show ending in… checks notes, 2 months! Oh and this even allows them to stay in the 50’s until the very last episode so that should make RAS happy. Here goes:
We find Jughead in a meeting with his editor where he gives him some super meta comments about how his last book (season 6) was too "out of left field with the genre change" and that the one before that (season 5) was "too depressing trying so hard to tell adult stories" and that he needs to recapture the magic of his first book (season 1), but with a fresh take. This will show how 'camp' they think they are that they know about our criticisms of the seasons, but it was "all part of the plan."
They can even throw in some flashbacks from previous season — you know to "pay homage to them" or as a "love letter to fans" or whatever bs they’ll spout about it. Then, Jughead sits down and starts writing what we know to be season 7 set in 1955 with high school stories, you know: same, but different. 🙄
The last scene is Jughead walking into Pops, he sees Archie sitting at their regular booth with Veronica and Betty. They wave him over. Archie asks: "how’s the writing, Jug?" Jughead replies: "I actually just finished!" The core four cheer to that with their milkshakes and we pan out.
Bonus points if Pop Tate is at the counter reading an actual Archie Comics, looks up, straight at the camera, and winks. Fade to black, Riverdale logo. The end.
No one knows what the ships are. No one knows what was real and what was part of Jug’s books. What could be more Riverdale than: "nothing matters and everything matters!" Which is exactly the kind of chaotic energy that I think RAS loves.
So there you have it, RAS, I’ve written it for you. I await my paycheck now since I did the job you can’t seem to do.

Well, it seems like some places have already seen the Riverdale finale. They didn't give spoilers as far as I'm aware. And, to the surprise of no one, it's crap. I remember when I was writing my recap of the season 5 finale, I said that when this is all said and done no one would be happy. I was referring to Rivervale, but apparently I was more on the nose then I thought.

The significant difference in viewership ratings between Nancy Drew and Riverdale this season (despite the fact that they air back! to! back!) truly *delights* me

Looking through my old screenshots I came across this old 2018 tweet of a Barchie fan
Tumblr media
Bare in mind, this is 2018. Around season 2, more or less.
Not to mention the COUNTLESS asks in the ask boxes of my fellow Bughead blogs here on Tumblr, such as @edgarsabandonedrocketship @stillhidden @i-know-you-can @middleagedresidentofriverdale @bugheadsfangirl and many others that promised us that "ratings and viewers will skyrocket with Barchie".
Mh.
So.
Let's look at the numbers, shall we?
These are the ratings and viewers during the Bughead/Varchie era:
Season 1
Tumblr media
Remember that the season was the first one, so nobody knew what the show was or what was the mood or anything. Keeping this in mind, it still did pretty good.
Season 2
Tumblr media
This season was objectively the best one, stable at 1 million viewers average, with minor downsides.
Season 3
Tumblr media
Objectively this season is the most irregular one, but still did pretty good considering the madness of it, keeping the show between 1 million and 800k viewers (with minor downsides, again).
Season 4
Tumblr media
Here too we can see that the decline was relatively normal, if not for two episodes: 4x12 which was a Katy Keen crossover episode (which, spoiler, nobody gave two shits) and the infamous 4x17 which lost 110k viewers in one week (plus the trama was leaked so everybody knew and didn't bother to watch). But everybody definitely hated the Barchie kiss (go check the reviews if you don't believe me. Plus it was another stupid musical so... draw your conclusions)
Season 5
Tumblr media
Now... I guess there's no need to describe what you're seeing here right? The show declined again, yes. But in the span of one season it lost 45% of it's viewers. Just look from season 4 première to season 5 première. And remember that 5x04 can be considered another "première", because it was first episode after the time jump, but again the show started hemorraging viewers. With barely more than 300k viewers watching the infamous finale.
Season 6
Tumblr media
And now. The famous season 6. The supernatural season. We're again seeing another huge decline. Another 45% decline in viewers. The second in the span of 2 years. That should tell you something. Not to mention that, this time, for the first time, the season finale is the less viewed episode. I wonder if the (already) trifling audience got spoilers beforehand. Mmmm 🤔
So... To summarize. Since Barchie happened, the views and the viewers dropped by 45% two times in two years and now the show that made roughly 1/2 million viewers now can't barely go over 200k anymore.
Thus I wonder... where's the horde of Barchie fans that was promised and who would have saved Riverdale? Where's the "increased ratings" that Barchie fans anticipated back in 2018. I can't see them. Quite the opposite, in fact.
The ship that was thought would have saved Riverdale actually sinked the show.
As my old friend Jughead would say
