Where do you think it all went wrong with Riverdale?

honestly, part of me is like, the show's over and nothing but fandom matters. so who cares?

the other part of me loves to complain about Riverdale and will continue to do so until the day I die in the parking lot of Michael's Diner in Montgomeryville, PA at the age of 86. so, long-winded answer under the cut

I'm tempted to say it's the s4 b*rchie kiss. It was so wildly out of character for both Betty and Archie that it's laughable. You know how you can tell when something is just blatantly OOC with no justification? They...don't justify it. They find ways to dance around any interaction that might offer clarification. They mute the reactions of the characters who should be devastated by it. And then they jump ahead 7 years so it's easier to just handwave it away as something that happened a long time ago.

but the thing is, I did keep watching after that. I thought: okay, at least we should get an exes-to-lovers arc out of this, which is one of my favorite tropes. there is no way they would spend 4 seasons developing Bughead as this loving, supportive, communicative, sexy, and almost-unbelievably-compatible couple just to tear them apart and never do anything with that dynamic again. maybe it'll be even sweeter seeing them come back together after so much hurt and longing.

boy was i wrong!!!!!!!!!

so, the episode that actually made me stop watching for good, with the exception of some standalones like The Jughead Paradox and the finale, was the s5 musical. that was when i realized that this team of writers was 100% willing, maybe even eager, to completely drop storylines they themselves had been building over the course of a season - do a 180 with all of the characterization and relationships - and then act as though the buildup they wrote never even happened.

in this case, i'm specifically talking about the Bughead reunion storyline they dropped in s5. i'm not going to pretend like it was a GREAT buildup - and it was mostly on Jughead's side, Betty's character in s5 was basically an emotionless misery bot that had sex sometimes - but it was there. Jughead told Tabitha he had unresolved feelings around Betty. that's followed by an entire episode that lays out Betty & Jug's time jump relationship, and how Jughead still believes she's the one who saves him from himself. they work on a case together, they start opening up to one another. Jughead's so worried about her he can't eat.

and then...you know what happens.

(i'll also note here that there was random bts stuff that strongly indicated the musical ep storyline had a drastic last-minute rewrite: lili tweeted a blue dress, suggesting the song with that line was meant for her character; RAS said cole had to do last-minute recording sessions; supposedly crew members have confirmed this was the case, too. since none of it's 100% confirmed you can take it all with a grain of salt, but i believe it.)

it was so fucking insulting as a viewer to give my time and attention to a show made by people who would not only randomly drop the threads they set up, but torpedo them altogether, and then behave like the fans are the ones somehow at fault for expecting a story that actually follows through on its own emotional and plot beats. we're just shippers, so our opinions are dumb and biased! it's just a tv show, so who cares! get over it!

so, i stopped watching, because i knew they would continue to write without any thought or respect for their characters or their audience, and therefore inevitably write themselves into another corner. and, shocker, i was right. they did it again, whisking everyone away to the 1950s because actually resolving any of the scenarios they set up was ToO hArD. why bother when you could just make every single character Righteously Angry and Incurably Horny all the time, lecture the audience about social issues that have already been mainstream progressive for the last several decades, and call it a "love letter" to your fans?

I really don’t get a majority of the Stranger Things fandom nowadays. Now it’s “don’t send hate to the cast, send it to the Duffer Bros! They wrote this and baited us!” Or “s1 Mike would deck s4 Mike for being an inconsiderate friend!”

Like what the heck? Can’t y’all be happy? It’s not like this is how Season 4 ends it all we have the final Season 5 still. So you saw some bts photo of something from filming that didn’t happen in this season, it can happen next season. So you think a character is acting out of character, the Duffer Bros are creating this all from an original idea and have shown they’re pretty good at writing kids in an authentic way. Now those kids are becoming teens that have teen drama but at least it’s not creepy teen show teen drama like Riverdale. Just breathe a little, that finale was something

I’m not even in the fandom and I’ve seen quite a few unhappy campers as to what happened this season over the past 24 hours. Whether it was because of shipping expectations, certain things that were hinted at by the cast and crew but hadn’t or has yet to happen yet, certain characters dying they felt was unfair or didn’t make any sense, arcs of characters that weren’t fully fleshed out or took a odd turn. Or on some rare occasions, just complaining that the last two episodes being too long for once.

Even though I was sorta split on it myself, I still felt satisfied in the end when I was watching it. It can’t be said the same for everyone but I know it still enjoyed it despite all of that.

The fact that they are so pressed about the baby tells you how insecure they are about it. Most bhs don't care about that bc we don't fall for that. "they don't show Lilis stomach on purpose" yes. Kj who had no problem showing Cole in s4 cares about that. Especially since ras already spoiled it anyways? And the bts from now is like 5 episodes later or so the baby must be in kindergarten by now with riverdales pacing xD they will be so disappointed 🤣

5x06 Reaction

JARCHIE!!! I missed their interactions so much... like honestly in S4 they barely spoke.  I’m loving the “roommates” dynamic.

Thoughts on this initial barchie interaction: 

I’ve seen all the discourse about it seeming like Archie doesn’t care about Betty’s problems, or not taking them seriously, and people comparing Archie’s “oof - that sucks” to jughead’s “white noise” speech in 1x08 (which I thought was cringy AF and I even liked b*ghead at the time) and here’s what I’ll say: 

His “oof - that sucks” comment as MATCHING Betty’s tone - she says it kind of matter of factly and with a bit of an eyeroll, she does NOT seem very upset about it, and she is a grown ass adult who DOESN’T need Archie’s condolences in that moment - and Archie knows that. 

She then brings up Polly, and Archie ASKS A FOLLOW UP QUESTION: “didn’t your mom say she does this? Takes off for a couple of days” which shows that he is referring to a previous conversation about this - they’ve BEEN talking about it and he DOES care (not to mention they showed that he had texted her about Polly at the end of the last episode)

She says she’s trying not to panic - because she knows this is something Polly does and may not actually be in danger - SO HE OFFERS A DISTRACTION during a time when she is basically asking for one, and then SHE COMES UP WITH THE IDEA OF WHERE TO GO HAVE SEX

Anyway I have argued with enough people on twitter about this lol.. I feel strongly.  Also, this scene was super cute and both Archie and Betty look so good in it.  

I love Tabitha.  Smart, enterprising, witty... I’m all for the Jugitha pairing. (seriously though, is a ship name decided for them? I’ve seen Tabhead and Jabitha as well, lol.  

Uhhhhh ok this car sex scene? It somehow feels even more explicit than the shower scene?? The moaning and breathing?? HOW DARE THESE STONEWALL KIDS INTERRUPT THIS

Is it just me or is Sheriff Keller looking really hot? Silver fox??  

I have to note that Archie’s hair colour looks SO BAD in this whole episode but especially this football scene with the Reggie confrontation.  It’s like, almost burgundy? But somehow bright orange at the same time? I hate it.  

Ok Cole is absolutely nailing this “down on his luck, beaten down” adult Jughead.  His character is funny all the sudden?? I love that he kept the money in the tip jar like OF COURSE

Ok Chad coming into Veronica’s class HE’S THE WORST!!! And then SITTING AT THE BACK I HATE HIM SO MUCH FOR THIS

Alright, now we have another scene that has people talking, which is where Archie meets Chad.  My thoughts: 

Archie clearly sizes up Chad.  I mean, he dated Veronica for 3-ish years (in the show’s timeline) so yeah, it’s normal to meet your ex’s new partner and size them up.  It read more like “he thinks Chads a douche” as opposed to “he’s jealous of Chad because he wants to be with V”.  

They show makes a point of showing Betty’s reaction to them meeting.  THIS SHOT IS NOT RANDOM.  Yes, I’m sure the show will go there, she’ll get jealous of V at some point.  Betty thinking that Archie is jealous of Chad is not the same as Archie actually being jealous of Chad.  

I kind of loved how Chad just jumps in here to join in the karaoke night - he didn’t redeem himself from the previous scene where he SAT IN THE BACK OF HER CLASS WHILE SHE WORKED but I like how they’re not playing him completely evil

Next scene: BETTY AND TONI ARE TALKING!!! I REPEAT!!! BETTY AND TONI ARE TALKING!!! Seriously, it’s so refreshing that they’re actually letting all kinds of new dynamics and character interactions happen this season.  

Also, NEDSLIST!!!! THIS SHOW!!!!

I am living for Cheryl being completely beautiful whilst yelling at construction workers.  

So like... she actually doesn’t have that much money. She couldn’t really afford the donation for the school... I kind of wish that once she says “I can’t afford it” people would like, not keep pushing? I’m looking at you Toni, whom I absolutely adore, I just wish the writers didn’t make it like Cheryl’s being squeezed dry.  I get that it’s needed for plot purposes but I don’t love it.  

Kevin and Betty are friends again!!! Love it!!! 

Karaoke night thoughts: 

At no point is Jughead hanging out or interacting with the rest of the group.  He stays separate from them - with Tabitha, which I appreciate, but I am just noting this because I’m sure it was done purposefully. 

“She probably forgot it’s Gekko now” uhhhh didn’t Toni announce V as “Veronica Gekko” in the last episode?? LOL THE SHADE

I love Veronica’s voice

Ok so Chad actually comes off so great in this scene?? I guess this is part of his manipulation - come off as such a great guy in front of all her friends to get them to like him? 

Jughead’s reaction to the duet is so me every time I’ve watched people do karaoke lmao

During the “or do you need more? Is there something else you’re searching for” they cut to Archie’s and Betty’s reaction.  Archie is not thinking about V in that moment.  

I am not seeing one iota of jealousy from Archie.  He looks genuinely happy for them.  

This Chad and Veronica bed scene makes me uncomfortable.  But I’m glad they’re showing their softer moments! 

The Archie/football recruitment sequence... Chad in the back of Veronica’s classroom again??? HOW IS THIS HAPPENING I HATE THIS!! Also, this is another scene where Chad looks jealous of Archie... not the other way around. 

Britta!!! I love her.  And I feel like the writers inserted her in specifically for Britta Lundin, former Riverdale writer and acclaimed author (read her book Ship It, seriously, it’s so good), and I love that. BUT THE WAY ARCHIE LOOKS AT BETTY IN THIS SCENE IS THAT EVEN LEGAL

We get the first glimpse Toni’s “Operation Bring Cheryl Out Of Hiding” plan here, when Archie asks her for funding for the football team and says its earmarked for something else (hmmmmmmm... this plan has been in the works for a while... and I’m here for it) 

Ok. This scene where Archie goes to ask Cheryl for money is... a mess.  My first reaction is that it was so OOC for Archie to bring up Jason in that way.  Then I got to thinking... Archie probably would want to honour his dad in that way and was genuinely suggesting that as something that might actually be helpful to her, as opposed to purposely trying to manipulate her.  He knows what it’s like to lose a family member, he just didn’t realize that Cheryl doesn’t grieve in the same way. The boy doesn’t have a malicious bone in his body.  Anyway, now he’s been banished from Thornhill! But don’t we see him (and everyone) there in a bts photo from possibly 5x08? Isn’t that at Thornhill? Will this be addressed or will the writers just forget it ever happened?

I love Betty and Kevin investigating together. It’s so refreshing. 

Ok this place Jughead is going to is legit the creepiest shit I’ve ever seen.  I am having trouble making myself care about this “Mothmen” plot??

Betty’s “Straight to the Point” interrogation style is actually effective in this truck stop stakeout scene.  

Alice again with her wine... I wonder if there will actually be an “Alice is an alcoholic” storyline or is the wine just part of her personality now?

Ok like it’s so inappropriate for a teacher to be wearing an HBIC shirt BUT I AM HERE FOR THIS DRAMATIC VIXENS HALLWAY WALK!! And Toni is correct, Cheer is a sport so sit down, Archie.  Notably Toni adds in “not even Cheryl managed to do that” - I’m thinking she new Ms. Bell would be eavesdropping ;)

WHY IS THIS PORTAIT OF JASON WORTH SO MUCH?? 

Is this Minerva character going to be important?? I keep seeing people talking about how she and Cheryl are going to hook up but is that just because she’s a female character who interacts with Cheryl? I’m not seeing it yet but hey, it’s Riverdale.  

JUGHEAD BRINGING UP THE EPIC HIGHS AND LOWS OF HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL I SCREAMED

Seriously though, since we know Jughead wasn’t there when Archie said that, there’s two options: Either Archie told him he said it, or (my preferable theory) Archie used to just SAY THAT REGULARLY and has said it in front of Jug lmao.

Chad again seems legit supportive when she tells him about her jewelry store plan?? THEY’RE SO UP AND DOWN!!! 

Ok, so Betty is an FBI agent (trainee, whatever) and she JUST NOW THOUGHT OF TRACING POLLY’S CELL PHONE

This scene... when Veronica finds out Chad has been talking to Hiram behind her back... this is where she decides she’s done with Chad. 

Another scene with Archie - I am still getting zero vibes that he’s into Veronica? And zero vibes that Veronica’s into Archie? It makes complete sense that Veronica would want to help the bulldogs.  Chad is a total dick here and is definitely threatened by Archie... again, not the other way around.  Side note: Chad, if threatened by Archie, is a TOTAL IDIOT for suggesting Archie renovates the Pembrooke - like, he’s going to be working? All the time? Where Veronica is staying? And probably taking his shirt off because he’s sweaty from all the working?? WHYYYYY WOULD CHAD ENCOURAGE THIS

This little flirty scene between Jughead and Tabitha (and it’s the first that I would say has any flirty undertones whatsoever) is pretty cute.

The fact that people are suggesting Betty showed up there because she wanted to talk to Jughead is SENDINNNNGGGGGG

Let’s be clear, she only asked about Jughead so she could make sure he wasn’t home so that she could bone Archie. There is no other interpretation for this.

They are playing the song from the porch scene in the pilot... DON’T TELL ME BARCHIE IS MEANINGLESS WHEN THEY ARE USING THIS SONG

I think the fact that this is the first time they had sex and we didn’t see it is meaningful - they are showing that the relationship is deepening and they are more than “just sex”

As Betty leaves, Archie looks like he wants to reach out for her and then stops himself - he is definitely falling hard and he’s afraid Betty isn’t feeling the same way

Ok, Cheryl is straight up wearing lingerie in Toni’s office!!! And the red lipstick is back - notably, throughout the entire show, she has worn the red lipstick as a kind of shield - she never has it for her “vulnerable” scenes.  Seems like that is still happening. AND this is where we see Boss Toni’s plan come into fruition - she started up the vixens and MADE SURE CHERYL FOUND OUT ABOUT IT because she knew that was the one thing that would make Cheryl come out of her Thornhill hiding spot.  Well played, Toni.  

Archie and Veronica announcing the bulldog funding... again, I’m not seeing ANY “romantic/attraction” vibes here? He does react when she says her last name is Lodge again but like, anyone would?

i actually shipped brucas and leyton as well and i believe lucas loved them in very different ways but ultimately he definitely loved both of them but they were both sort of spoiled for me because of the way lucas treated them and the way they treated each other. back in season one i was more into leyton and in season two i was more into brucas but then came the moment when brooke made a joke about peyton's moms after peyton's confession. and i fucked right off of both. (+)

i understood brooke's frustration and anger, i really did, but that just crossed a line for me. if it were season one, i might not have liked it, but i would have understood. but (and as much as i dislike love triangles just for drama) after peyton was being honest (even though she was in love with jake but whateva) and she got her dead moms thrown in her face? i promptly dropped the hell out of brucas, leyton and it took me two seasons to even like brooke again. never is a ship worth it.

hey! sorry for the delay in answering. lucas obviously loved both girls and different parts of him flared up whenever he was around them. it was pretty awful how they went against each other but i feel like it was a very hurtful situation from all parts: peyton’s feelings were real but she couldn’t admit to them, brooke’s feelings were real and so new to her, lucas’s heart was very confused and the girls were SO close and like sisters, it was a very messy and hurtful triangle i think.

so, like i said in some earlier question, i tend to analyze the writing choices more than the character drive... because at the end of the day, you have a group of writers telling that story and the characters make decisions that are influenced by a bunch of external factors outside of the storyline. i’ve said many times that i think brucas was dismantled too fast and suddenly because of chad and sophia’s bts drama, and it ended up being a careless point in oth’s writing... and that was the entirety of season four.

if brooke had said all those things to peyton in s1 i think i would’ve understood it better, but in s4 it was just a little out of character. she had grown so much and ultimately she was the one choosing not to be with lucas, so there was no point in making her so angry and resentful to peyton. maybe ignoring them both would’ve been more in character. but i think that absolutely no one was rooting for peyton (except the lp shippers ofc! lol) after what went down again in s3. she didn’t have to tell brooke about her feelings for lucas, i did think that was kind of shady, she knew how much of a sore spot that still was. i’m not blaming peyton exclusively cause lucas had his feelings too and he’s to blame, but like brooke said herself, she could’ve buried it. 

anyway, like i said, i think come s4 no one was rooting for peyton and they really needed to go for leyton, so the way they found for ‘leveling the playing field’ was villanizing brooke. they gave her that stupid brathan sex tape (my biggest eye roll) and made her joke about peyton’s mom so we would feel sorry for peyton, like you and i’m sure a lot of other viewers did. and this way no one wouldn’t think peyton was being awful for hanging out with lucas.

(and although i hate most of oth’s s4, i do appreciate that brooke saved peyton from psycho derek, and not lucas! i thought it was a nice way to mend their friendship...................however i never felt sorry for peyton lol so i would’ve rather seen brooke put in a position of danger for once and peyton helping her. i was never a fan of the ~saving peyton~ idea. i also appreciate that scene in the hospital when brooke tells lucas he has to come back to take care of peyton! that was nice.)

but i feel like at least one tree hill gave some real consequences to hurt between friendships you know? things aren’t usually magically fixed, friends betraying you hurts SO MUCH more than anything else, and i appreciate that they always worked through it, comparing to other shows *cough*riverdale*cough*.

2 things I wanna say in this ask. 1. I started my rewatch about a 2 months ago and I finished season 3 3 weeks ago and I still haven't been able to bring myself to start S4. What have these writers done to me? 2. Why doesn't the CW promote the 100, like ever? They promote the absolute shit out of riverdale and arrow. I don't get it

I’m not an expert on TV or business, but I do have some background in marketing (I don’t like it, I just do,) and one of the things I know is that in order to make marketing worth it, you have to give people a product to buy.

So, why would they promote Riverdale and Arrow now but not The 100?  Because Riverdale and Arrow are airing now and The 100 is NOT AIRING. It is the right season to promote those shows, and not ours. 

No one is going to promote a show and spend all that money on marketing, when there is no show airing for people to watch. 

You don’t promote something when the product isn’t there. 

What would be the purpose of promoting a show that isn’t on air until months from now? 

The fans would get something and be excited! Yes. But also, you know what? The fans are going to watch it anyway, aren’t they. And they are giving us stuff, just not general marketing stuff. We’re getting BTS photos and script to screens, costumes and set designs, and very small bits of interviews and conversations. 

I mean, it’s only a 13 episode season. If they start giving us all the story and spoilers now there will be nothing left to surprise us with when the show actually airs. 

I just… if you want someone to freak out with you about how we’re not getting what we deserve and we are being denied our rightful show gossip and spoilers, you’ve come to the wrong place. I don’t like spoilers, and giving us hints about the show, even little ones, add up in the long run to spoiling for me.  And there’s still a long run before the show comes back. And we are not satisfied with what we get at comic con or in interviews or from @the100writers. We want more. Always more. 

As for marketing. I don’t see why they would market right now. It is the wrong season. It’s like advertising for jack o’lanterns and candy corn in April. Sure the die hard fans of Halloween will love it and get excited for their favorite to come back, but everyone else is still on Easter and looking for chocolate bunnies and marshmallow peeps. 

This doesn’t mean that Halloween isn’t great. IT IS. In fact, it’s totally better than Easter, but it’s not Halloween time, and I frankly, will enjoy Halloween more, if I’m not burned out on it by having people force it on me all year long. You feel? 

We’re Halloween people and we love The 100. We’re going to celebrate it whenever it comes out. Marketing is not FOR us, it’s for the people who might kinda like halloween or have never really tried it but might get excited for it next year. 

And I really need to do my rewatch. I’m almost afraid to, because I’ve got a good balance now between fandom and my own writing and finishing my sci fi novel and working on my other art and writing projects. Because what did they do to us? They told an enthralling story, with great characters, and high production values that drew us in and wrapped around us and wouldn’t let us get out. I honestly would rather they spend their money on making the best show they can instead of marketing it. I am a terrible marketer, though. I believe content is king, not advertising, and I LOVE the content they give us.
