Parashat Bo
by Meir Anolick
Written for Shabbat Parshat Bo, ג’ בשבת תשע”ד:
In this week’s Parsha, Bnei Yisrael are given the well-known commandment of sacrificing sheep and using the blood from that sheep to paint their doorposts. God tells Moshe that when He sees the blood, He will pass over those homes and not allow any harm to come to its inhabitants. So it was that when Hashem passed through all of Mitzrayim and slew the firstborn of every home, He passed over the homes of Bnei Yisrael where the blood was on the doorpost.
This whole concept poses a problem. First off, why does God need an indicator on the door to know which homes are Jewish? Hashem is Omniscient; he does not need to be reminded where we lived. Furthermore, all of the Jewish people were living in the land of Goshen, which through the verses we come to see was separate from the rest of the land of Mitzrayim, so why couldn’t Hashem just tell Moshe, “I will pass over the land of Goshen”?
Three of the Imahot were barren (Leah was not only because Hashem had mercy on her for being the less-loved wife), and they had to pray to Hashem that they could have children. Sara, Rivkah, and Rachel all had to pray for some time (Rachel less so, but she probably felt more pressure with all the children Leah was having) before Hashem finally granted them children. We learn in Masechet B’rachot (don’t remember the exact daf) that Hashem loves the prayers of the righteous. It was for this reason that the Imahot were barren, because Hashem wanted to hear their prayers.
The same question can be applied here, why does Hashem need to hear prayers? He already knows what is in our hearts, He can see our lives and know what we desire, so why the need to verbalize it? The answer lies in how the action affects us. Hashem wanted the Imahot to pray to him because by immersing themselves in prayer would help them to perfect their traits and become better people. Hashem wanted them to grow in a way that could only come through prayer and developing that connection with Him, and that is why He made them barren.
Now we can apply this to our Parsha. Hashem knew already where Bnei Yisrael lived, He did not need anyone to point it out to Him. What He wanted from us was to take that step to connect to Him, to take an action that indicated readiness to serve Him and follow in His ways. By taking this action, we showed our willingness to follow Hashem and it is through that merit that Hashem passed over our homes and saved us from the plague. Hashem knows what is in our hearts, and He knows whether or not we truly want to follow Him, but He wants us to state it explicitly, because that will strengthen our resolve.
May we all strive to show our devotion to Hashem every day, through both actions and words. Shabbat Shalom.

How are you learning ASL? My local colleges don't offer any classes :(
That's a great question lmao! I'm currently on a break from active review and new vocabulary. But I have resources I can offer you.
Here’s emmastudies’ resource post
Here’s someone you can follow on instagram: Nyle DiMarco
Rochelle Barlow has a lot of resources. I caution this one, just because I’m genuinely wary of people who sell their method as being above all methods. She has some good points--language learning should be fun--but it also does take work and practice. You can just make those things a little less painful.
My old ass post about ASL still have a lot of resources I use, and the top one I recommend is ASL University. That’s where I got the majority of my basic vocab.
I am fortunate that we have Deaf Studies at this university, but it doesn’t have to be the only way. I would try to find a study buddy to hold you accountable--I’ve found, especially in the pandemic, it’s sooo hard and sooo isolating to endeavor with this kind of stuff alone.
Please let me know if you need more resources/help!

hey!! another anon here, but since you were in the topic, can you, or anyone that sees this ask, name some nonbinary celebrities/public figures??? i would love to add some to my to-do list to make them resources
Hey anon! It's really cool people are wanting to make resources for / play non-binary faceclaims. I actually have a masterlist HERE which notes who has resources. If a masterlist is too overwhelming then there's a faceclaim tag HERE. ✨

In an interview just a few weeks before his death on the podcast From The Inside Out, host Rivkah Krinsky asked Sacks the age-old question, 'Why does God let bad things happen to good people?'
"God does not want us to understand," Sacks said. "Because if we ever understood, we would be forced to accept that bad things happen to good people, and God does not want us to accept those bad things. He wants us not to understand, so that we will fight against the bad and the injustices of this world, and that is why there is no answer to that question. God has arranged that we shall never have an answer to it."
- From an NPR article on Rabbi Jonathan Sacks’ death on Nov 7, 2020.
In his life, Rabbi Sacks was devoted to interfaith dialogue and exploring issues ranging from religious fundamentalism to the relationship between science and faith. May his memory be a blessing.

inky told me to take the ‘are you a soldier poet or king‘ quiz as each of the spk characters, so i predicted what i thought everyone would be and i got 5/7 right
athaliah: king ✓ considering how obviously she is my projection character, and i got king when i took the quiz myself, i don’t think anyone is surprised.
licia: soldier ✗ to my surprise she got king. i think bc she’s the oldest character in the cast by 20 years and the only one with a role in present chapters and the flashback chapters i might get two different results if i took twice for her.
isidore: poet ✓ nice. she’s the only character without generational trauma and it was refreshing to give lighter answers for once
shiphrah: soldier ✓ also nice. the quiz author’s idea of a soldier is a lot more ruthless/angry than my concept so it’s no surprise shiphrah got soldier and licia didn’t
japheth: king ✓ some of these questions hurt when answered him... i really love japheth but he’s my whump character so when i write him everything has to hurt as much as possible
rivkah: soldier ✓ what did i say about ruthlessness and anger
netanyel: poet ✗ also another king, but seeing as the overall quiz results were skewed roughly 65% king 23% poet 12% soldier, it’s not surprising this cast is full of kings

speaking of duolingo what's the wildest sentence u have seen in it 👀
Oh my gosh. Ugh it's so hard to think off the top of my head.
I've read some pretty dramatic ones, like "Tell him I do not love him," and I have also seen some ones that just make me mad, like "The monkey marries a chair." It's really annoying to me because supposedly the odd sentence is supposed to stick in your head more, but as you can see by the trouble I had recalling any, it doesn't. If anything, you remember them in your native far better than in the actual language, which... defeats the point.
I love Duolingo for its accessibility and use of the forgetting curve, but some of their lesson plans suck. Like, I really, really hate Hebrew's. Arabic's is set up like Hebrew's should be, but then once you know a few words, the tree is over. Most of them are done by volunteers rather than actual employees, so I can't fault them for devoting their free time without pay, but Duolingo. Please. If you made your premium access less expensive, more people would buy it. Like, when they put it on sale for 50% it's still too much for me, but if it were affordable, I would 100% subscribe because of how much I use it. And then they could pay their employees to research how to structure a lesson plan, or pay their volunteers.

wip wednesday
more sneak peeks bc im done with finals ;w;
Nox will be the first to admit she was terrified when Rivkah first invited her over.
It wasn’t remotely reassuring that Ilya had been standing behind his mother the entire time, either, looking more or less like he wanted the very ground beneath his feet to open up and swallow him whole, face as red as his hair. He’d even texted her later, after she’d accepted the invitation, perplexed by the whole thing.
sorry, he’d said. my mom’s… very enthusiastic. you don’t have to come.
But, that hadn’t been the problem, and she’d told him as much. She loved that his mom liked her enough to invite her over during what she remembered was—maybe not an extremely important holiday, but a family holiday nonetheless. She was just… confused as to why she’d suddenly invited her over.
His answer had sent her heart pounding in her chest.
because I hadn’t done it yet TuT she told me to invite you and I took too long TuT
Nox follows Ilya out into the living room, tugging at her too long sleeves where they cover her hands. It’s a nervous tick, and she hangs back a little as Ilya crosses the living room at a half jog to grab some of the bags from his mother’s hands.
Rivkah smiles warmly, her long, deep red hair plaited neatly into a braid that rests over her shoulder. As soon as her hands are free, she reaches up and cups Ilya’s cheeks in her hands, pulling him in for a quick kiss on the forehead. “Thank you, sweetheart. Ellie? You need any help, baby?”
“I got it!” comes another voice from the hallway.
Ilya carries the bags his mother had passed off to him over to the kitchen counter, as another redhead appears in the doorway. Ilya’s little brother, Elliot, has his hands full as well, freckled cheeks flushed from the cold outside as he bites at his lip. Messy red curls poke out from underneath of his knit hat as he follows Ilya into the kitchen area, dropping his own bunch of bags heavily on the counter.
“Wow,” Ilya laughs, reaching up to ruffle his brother’s hair. “You didn’t pull anything carrying all those, did you?”
Elliot just laughs, leaning into Ilya’s side after swatting his hand away for a hug. “Me and mom didn’t wanna make more than one trip.”
“Good job.”
Rivkah is the first to notice her, as she breezes toward the kitchen to put her groceries away and start getting ready to cook for dinner. “Hello, Nox, dear, it’s so good to see you. Are you getting hungry yet?” she asks, and then pauses, turning to her eldest. “Ilya, is your sister still in bed?”
Ilya shrugs, moving to help unload the groceries. “I guess. Nox and I have been hanging out in my room since she got here about a half hour ago.”
While Rivkah clicks her tongue unhappily and goes to knock insistently on Penny’s door, Elliot pulls out a plastic tub of sweets from one of the bags, holding them up to show Nox and Ilya. “Look what they had at the store!”
Nox looks at it curiously, smiling. “What is it?”
“Saltwater taffy!”
“Oh!”
“Score!” Ilya laughs, shutting the fridge and going for another bag. “Can I have a couple?”
Elliot dodges Ilya’s wayward hand when he reaches for the tub, frowning. “You can have… one.”
“Only one??” Ilya gasps, clutching his chest. “Aren’t I your favorite brother?”
Elliot laughs, squirming as Ilya pulls him into another bear hug. “You’re my only brother!”

2-20 even numbers !!
2. Would you prefer to live in the country or the city?
city!! i could never live in the country. it’s nice to get away sometimes but i need public transport and lgbt community and the city is where all the fun stuff happens
4. already answered
6. Do you prefer baths or showers?
love a good bath. generally take showers because they’re faster but baths are a nice treat. i can have little a bath. as a treat
8. Do you prefer reading paper or electronic books?
paper. i went through a phase in high school where i mostly read ebooks because they were convenient, but i later realized how much i love the feel of paper. it just feels so much more solid and real, and like, a part of me. i love marking them up and knowing i’ll be able to look back at them years later and retrace those same pages and words i read so long ago. some of my most prized possessions are books i’ve had since i was a little kid, i love how destroyed they are because it shows how much i loved them. they’re like a part of my history and if i ever have kids i want them to be able to look at my old books and know what was important to me when i was their age. i want to be able to pass that down
10. Do you like your name? Would you ever change it?
i’m not sure how i feel about my name, it’s just my name? it’s me. i wouldn’t ever change it because i can't imagine my name being anything else. i mean it’s very jewish and immediately marks me as Different and baristas can never spell it but it’s still my name. i also go by nargz with a lot of my internet friends, and that feels like my name too in a different way, but rivkah is just who i am? i guess?
12. Would you ever want to be famous? If so, what for?
absolutely not, being famous sounds horrible. the most "fame" i would want would be being a well known artist in fandom but even that sounds really stressful
14. Do you consider yourself a romantic?
yes, i love beauty and romance and love and humanity. i mean i get discouraged and pessimistic at times but i really do believe in love and humanity, and stories that reflect that are really important to me. i really believe the only stories that matter have love at their core
16. Who do you want to be closer to?
you, jessi. i really like you and would love to spend more time together!
18. Tell us about an early childhood memory.
that's tough, a lot of my childhood is a blur tbh. i do have fond memories of going to the zoo with my dad, i remember really loving the meerkats. i don't have a lot of specifics, mostly just general feelings about events
20. What can you see outside your bedroom window?
i wanted to take a picture, but it's dark out so the view is really bad. but uh just a basic city street. cars, apartment buildings and a restaurant across the street from me, there's a tree right outside my window, dead right now cuz it's the winter
send me asks!

POP-UP WORKSHOP
Tumblr media
KEEPING THE SPONTANEITY IN YOUR ART
Q: How does one get to finished art without getting bogged down and stiff in the process, ending up with overworked art?
A: This is a continual challenge for many illustrators at all levels. Some artists use their hand-drawn sketches in their final art, as in Patty, Emma and Vanessa’s energetic characters. Others use media that have a sort of mind of their own, as Amy does with her playful watercolor work…though one has to invest the time playing and experimenting with the materials to avoid losing control altogether. For her acrylic line work, Lalena uses “crappy old brushes” for the raw quality of their marks. Paradoxically, digital technology can help with retaining spontaneity and energy. Photoshop and similar software allows you to composite the best of your sketches, scanned textures, painted marks, and fills. Software can give you a lot of freedom to explore, while still having a lot of control. We certainly don’t have a magic answer to this, but we do have strategies, and shared them at a recent meeting:
LALENA: I find that the more detailed the illustration, the more danger I am in with stiffness. Because there are more pieces that I have to get right, that have to work together—and you have to spend time coordinating all of that. By that time, the spontaneity is gone!
EMMA: I’m working on a new dummy book; Normally I have to do all the pages in order because of my OCD, but this time I followed my heart, did the spreads as I felt inspired, and felt much better about it. I had been stuck on pages 16-17; I did it a few times and I kept getting the same result, so I thought, “Well, I’ll go to a different page and come back to it.” And it was like I’d just invented sliced bread!
RIVKAH: I can identify with your OCD; I can’t jump between projects. Part of my approach to avoid getting bogged down is to save details until the end.
EMMA: Sometimes it does help if I stop and draw something else.
LUZ MARIE: I have to do that too.
RACHEL: I have to start with a lot of structure in order to end up in a place where I feel comfortable and can be looser. Throwing pasta at the wall doesn’t work for me.
ELIZA: It helps to have thumbnails prepared and problems figured out beforehand.
PATTY: Right—you get the thinking part done, then you can go to painting and have fun. I draw sketches and then trace them and scan them, and layer in textures. Sometimes I’ll trace over the sketches some, but other times the original sketches are just right.
RACHEL: I do a thumbnail, very ugly and loose, scan and print it, then trace it doing a more refined sketch, but still not finished-finished. Then I trace that with the final line. With each step, something is added. Each step is a guide for the next step.
VANESSA: When I do collage, I keep the backgrounds separate. Then I can be loose because I’m not going to mess up where the characters go. Then I cut out the characters and put them on the background; I can move them around that way. Or I’ll use Photoshop, doing same thing. Lucy was all Prismacolor pencil with watercolor line around silhouettes, and no backgrounds at all. But if I’m loose, I ask myself: Is it too messy? Do I clean it up, or then will it be too clean? Or use Photoshop? Then it can look overworked. I dunno, it’s tough.
EMMA: Technology is definitely part of my process. I draw in charcoal, clean up the line in Photoshop, then use Illustrator’s autotrace function.
LALENA: Eliza, you showed us your new dummy book, and your painted work is always so enviably spontaneous-looking. How would you do the final art, so that you’d keep that quality?
ELIZA: I make sure I have a thumbnail, then I just go crazy. I might do practice air-brushstrokes, or test a stroke on another piece of paper. Then once I have it right, I do it on the final paper. If I’m not in a hurry it can help. If I mess up, I do sometimes fix it in the computer.
PATTY: It helps to know you can fix it if you need to.
ELIZA: If I overwork it, I realize it right away. I just have to start over. I do always test the brush, and switch brushes if I think it’ll help.
RIVKAH: Do y’all know Quentin Blake? He illustrated the Roald Dahl books. His illustrations are just a bunch of squiggles! He has these huge pieces of paper, and draws the same picture over and over quickly, until he gets it right!
