I’ve always been a big fan of old style fantasy art in the realm of trashy sci fi and fantasy novel covers, and even though I’m about 10-20 years removed from what feels like the heyday for this style, being introduced to Magic the Gathering let me have access to some of the last remaining goliaths who shaped and changed fantasy art as we know it.
As Magic the Gathering modernizes to try and attract new players, the art style shifts, and many of the newer artists to the scene take a more modern approach to art design as well. I think whenever something like this happens you run the risk of a community losing its identity and the pillars that support it. When art institutions adopted Impressionism as the forward movement of the time it involved a rejection of other art heritages spanning 100s of years.
MtG is also a much more profitable corporation now. When artists are picked to design a card, I’m sure they have much less freedom in card design than they did 20 years ago. They’ve compartmentalized. An artist like Phil Foglio wouldn’t (and doesn’t) get to make cards for MtG anymore (besides a new alternate art for Chaos Warp) just because his style can’t fit into any check boxes for what MtG art is supposed to be anymore.
This post was really brought on by the newish brothers war set which is based on one of my favorite sections of MtG lore, and almost all of the art is rather uninspired. Urza and Mishra are just dudes. No sense of Shakespearean drama happening in their cards. No sense of Cain and Abel among them, just what looks like a regular old wizard fight. Even the alternate art cards, which are the design choice to fill the hole for people that care about card art, feel lacking. If this is a topic of any interest to the reader, I’d encourage you to compare the art from The Brother’s War with a set like Mirrodin Besieged.
Especially compare the “power” cards of the set, which are usually the most expensive, and would get the focus for whatever MtG would consider “good” art.

Kamen Rider Rogue
Kamen Rider Cronus
- from Kamen Rider RKF
  Rider Kick's Figure
- by Bandai
Launched in 2018, RKF - Rider Kick's Figure - was a line of action figures that seemed like it was going to be an all-inclusive line of affordable action figures from across the franchise.
The focus was accessories and articulation - with a few gimmick figures in the mix. But a departure from the traditional gimmick-focused DX toys based around a unifying play pattern. And the 4.5 inch size (11.43 cm) was a departure from the previous 6 inch (15.24cm) lines.
RKF did cover a wide variety of series;
Decade, W, Ex-Aid, Build, Saber, Zero-One and Zi-O - the series the line was designed for.
But after Saber, it ended. And the Revice Remix Series was launched - roughly the same scale, but back to a line-wide Gimmick for each figure.
It's a shame really, because the idea of affordable toys of these characters was really appealing - both Cronus and Rogue's SHF releases were triple the cost of these at release and have only increased since.
I mean, the tagine for the toy series was "So affordable and it's still articulated!"
Comparatively limited articulation to SHF, and largely unpainted accessories, but for the price (about $15 usd) you get a lot of play value and great sculpts. And it was a way to collect a lot of characters that you might not be able to get from other lines.

A loan against a commodity is a unique way of getting some capital when the chips are down. The basic principle of financing applied by the commodity Loan Companies is the underlying asset/ commodity which is being taken as collateral. When you take a loan against a commodity, there is no restriction on the location, commodity, or quality which is being financed. Financing is available for most commodities across the country. One can also apply for a Loan against the warehouse. One has to have a warehouse receipt...

RKF-C/09 Tagetes Fusilier
Tumblr media
The Tagetes is the backbone of the Baronic Unified Command. Noble or not, every cadet earns their chevrons in the chair of one of these bastards. The retrofitted version you're looking at doesn't deviate much from the old standby. It's got an uparmor package with a new alloy mix that the Royal Foundry boys cooked up (top secret!). Combined with reinforced joints means that it can take a real beating and keep ticking. Just don't expect it to be doing the two-step anytime soon.
This Tagetes is a Fusilier, squad marksman version. Sensor suite's been retooled, derived from interferometry suites yanked off frigates and downscaled. Don't know what black magic the eggheads had to conjure to fit them into the chassis, but you won't find a better fire control and target acquisition system anywhere else.
Fusilier's standard issue weapon is the Hesse-Kovan Heavy Industries made HvC-125 Precision Assault Cannon. A reliable and imminently accurate system, it'll sling a 125mm through a target two kilos away, no problem. HcVs take all kinds of solid state ammo to boot, sabot, squashhead, plasma-jacketed, even loitering munitions. Won't fire energetic munitions though, barrel deforms too easily under heat stress. However, H&K is working on a version that'll accept linear accelerators mods or nuclear shaped charge ammunition, expect it by the end of next Standard year. -Quartermaster Sergeant Emilie Levallier, inventory memo Art by the fantastic EM Fields, catch em on twitter at: https://twitter.com/EMFields_Art

"Dear Watcher," I wrote, "What is it you're so afraid I'll do?" Then I held his pen for him, and he replied instantly with a candour that has kept me from truly despising him.
"Fail," he wrote back.

A fresh design straight from the RKF foundries, this mass-production model of the RKF Calendula has seen a few deployments in the Atlas Line as a spec-ops frame.
