March for Meta Season 3
March Meta Day 3 Season 3: Sometimes Alex gets the words right
Season 3 time!  Another season where Alex had his ups and downs when it comes to communicating with Michael.  There were definitely some moments where he said the wrong thing or shut Michael out at the wrong time, but again I am here to celebrate the times he did say the right thing.
3x03 drive in is a wild ride of a conversation.  Michael is not in a good place - resigned to his death and thinking he deserves it because of his father.  Alex has just come off a conversation about his own father and is again trying to figure what to do with his life and not knowing how to make a choice for himself.  It’s honestly a miracle they came out of this intact.
Alex:  “In Maria’s vision, I say I’m covering up a murder, right?”
Michael: “Yeah.”
Alex: “It’s not you.”
Michael: “You can’t know that.”
Alex: “Yes, I can.  If it were you, I would not cover it up.  I would burn the entire world down first.”
First off, credit for a dramatic exit and leaving Michael to think about what he said.  This is obviously an iconic line, and it’s important for many reasons.  In context with what I’ve been focusing on, how at times Alex is able to address one of Michael’s fears - that he doesn’t matter, that he is the one left behind - it is perfect.  Alex doesn’t say he wouldn’t cover up a murder, he says he wouldn’t cover up Michael’s murder.  Michael is the exception here, the person Alex knows regardless of circumstance he wouldn’t stand for his death.  Not only would he not cover it up, he would seek vengeance.  It’s not a love confession, but it is a confession of the value Alex places on Michael’s life.  Alex makes it clear that to him Michael isn’t disposable, that there is nothing that would convince to let Michael’s death go unpunished.
I can’t talk about Season 3 without 3x08.
Alex:  “Guerin, you are the one piece . . . that I cannot go through life without.”
Have I sufficiently recovered from that moment - no.  I think back to Season 1 Alex saying he’s tired of not saying what he wants to and in this moment I think he really is able to say what he wants.  I think it’s important to remember that Alex and Michael are not together at this point, this was not a romantic declaration by Alex.  Instead it is a plea for Michael’s safety, for him to follow the plan so there are no unforeseen complications that could put him at risk.  Most importantly, he lets Michael know that his importance in Alex’s life is unique to him, Michael is not replaceable or forgettable, his is someone Alex can’t live without.  Michael has never been the most important person in anyone’s life before.  And while it doesn’t erase the pain of their past, Alex is finally able to tell Michael what he means to him,

Who says science isn't exciting?
4x07 Dig me out
I need to start off by saying that the science in this episode is only between Shivani and Liz, so if nothing makes sense, know that I really did try my best to understand and translate what is going on.
Also, the usual disclaimer still holds: I am not a biologist, simply a maths nerd. And English is not my first language, so apologies in advance if I word things weirdly. I am also writing this in the evening, after a long day of uni. Have fun reading!
During diner at the restaurant with Liz, Rosa and Shivani, we have the following dialogue between Liz and Shivani (I find it very rude that Liz completely ignored Rosa during the meal, but that is not the focus of this meta):
Liz: "Wait, so... we were looking for a way to attack damaged tissue. Right? [...] Okay, but fractals, they're all over the place. In cell physiology, and in human anatomy. I mean, what if we used that same pattern?"
Shivani: "We might be better able to holistically mitigate damage."
Liz: "Not only that. We could regenerate the cells altogether. I mean, you have this new cryogenics company, right? An immersive chamber might be exactly what we need to undo the damage that has altered these cells. We could flood our subjects' circulatory systems with bio-engineered organic compounds that are in a cryogenic..."
Shivani: "Pod"
So. Let's begin from the start. As Liz says, we indeed have fractals everywhere. And I would be a bad mathematician if I didn't start by talking about fractals in maths (this is purely an excuse to nerd out over maths and forget about biology for a moment). So, by definition, a fractal is a geometric shape containing detailed structure at arbitrarily small scales. Many fractals appear to have a similar pattern at increasingly smaller scales (like the Mandelbrot set, which is given in the picture and gif at the end of this post, after the cut, taken from Wikipedia)
Fascinating isn't it?! This is just one of the most famous examples of fractal patters (and I may or may not have attempted a few times to figure out how to plot it myself). Fractals don't just appear in mathematics, but also everywhere around us! For instance, some species of algae, lightning bolts, and DNA all contain fractals. So this was the fun part of that conversation with Liz and Shivani. Now, let's have a look at the less fun part:
Shivani: "We might be able to holistically mitigate damage."
As I am not a native English speaker, I had to look up what mitigate meant because I wasn't sure. Mitigate means to make something less severe, serious, or painful.
Holistically (in medicine, which is what I'm assuming they are talking about) means "in a way that treats the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather just the symptoms of a disease." So, here, Shivani is suggesting that they might be able to (using fractals) reduce the damage on the whole person (i.e. not just their body). Which, when it comes to minimising damage in medicine is not something that is always so easy to do. So, fractals would (according to Shivani) allow them to minimise the damage done to Shivani's daughter and Max on a global scale.
Then, Liz mentions that they could use fractals to regenerate cells.
Is regenerating cells using fractals something that is scientifically possible? According to some papers that I've read, the answer it yes. The idea behing this method is that since cells have a fractal pattern to them, we can use fractal dimensions, and their repeating pattern at the wanted scale, to influence how new cells grow. This can be done by introducing vasculature (= vascular system of a part of the body) to the target cells. The scientists use computer programms to recreate that vasculature, by generating the wanted fractal pattern to insert to the cell.
So, this was a little explanation of how fractals can be used in the regeneration of cells. Which, is definitely something that Shivani would have the ressources to do and to finance. Now, let's look into the next science fact mentioned in this conversation:
Cryogenics: in physics, it is the science behind the production and behaviour of materials at a very low temperature.
The special branch of cryogenics applied to biology is called cryobiology, which usually has the purpose of cryopreservation. As far as I can read online, the use of cryogenics in cell regeneration is mostly about preserving the cells in their current state.
So, in terms of Liz trying to regenerate Max and Michael's alien cells, my guess is that she could freeze their current cells so that they don't degrade more, before finding a cure? To be honest, all of the papers I've read about cryogenics and cells talk about preservation, so I can't really see any other use (since, again, not a biologist).
However, for Shivani's case, cryopreservation is very accurate, for the lack of a better word. Her daughter is in a cryogenic pod (as seen in 4x06, and as mentioned by Shivani in the above conversation), wich mimicks the preservation of the alien pod, by keeping her cells in stasis.
So, in conclusion, in my opinion, the use of cryogenics makes sense when we consider Shivani, but not when we consider Liz. And since Liz does not know about Shivani's daughter, I will assume that this is Liz's way of keeping the alien secret, by not revealing that she too posssesses a statis pod, only not a cryogenic one.
And this is all for the science in this epsiode. All in all, I would say that it is human science, namely because I could find published articles which back up what both Liz and Shivani are saying. Sorry again for the delay between this meta and the previous one, hopefully the next one will come sooner :))
And here are the pictures/gifs of the Mendelbrot set, taken from Wikipedia, and put behind a cut because some people may find the gif disturbing:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And since I am a big nerd, I tried coding the Mandelbrot set on Python. I did manage to get the first picture, but sadly the zooming in is a bit too hard for me to do (yet). Below is the picture that I got myself, which I am very proud of!
Tumblr media
Edit: I made a gif! It's not as exciting as the one from Wikipedia, but I am still very proud of it. You can find it here

The biggest failure with the Michael and Alex’s storyline this season isn’t that Alex has been missing so long (since we know this is most likely due to Tyler Blackburn’s health issues.)It’s that this show doesn’t know how to drag out storylines properly. Like realistically the “this isn’t a violation of trust” Michael who broke into Alex’s house after 1 day of not hearing from him and the finds one crashdown napkin on the ground outside his bunker and goes on a rampage looking for Alex Michael would definitely be concerned that Alex has been MIA for so long. Alex’s friend’s mom dies and Alex doesn’t call; Michael get sick for the first time in his life and loses his powers and Alex doesn’t call, and Michael is what, lightly peeved? What would make more sense is Michael noticing that Alex is missing earlier on and looking for him over several episodes, it would easily fit into the spiraling that Michael’s been doing lately and would better align with the character they’ve built. Instead, this show is so often all about instant gratification in its storylines. Liz comes up with a scientific solution in less than 24 hours. Tesca immediately reveals herself to be a shape shifter. Bonnie gets purposefully arrested the second they realize she took Michael’s powers. I wouldn’t be surprised if it only takes Michael 1 (2 at most) episodes to find and save Alex once he finally realizes he is missing, which will make it all the more frustrating that it took him so long to discover Alex was taken in the first place. The show has forever had the problem of not knowing how to realistically have characters like Alex and Kyle missing from an episode because of the actors’ contracts, but this is almost next level. You can’t establish how much Michael cares about Alex and how fast he has come to his aid in the past and then have him act unbothered when Alex goes missing this season. If the show was better at long term storylines they would have Michael already looking for Alex. Not only would it make more sense for what’s been established with Michael’s character, but it would also create more build up and a more satisfying pay off for when Malex is finally reunited.

I only just started watching this show, so I barely go here, but these are the thoughts that keep me awake at night and I might as well type them out so they get out of my head before they're probably jossed on Monday night.
Ok, so it looks like Theo is going to guide Dallas through whatever mindscape/alien dimension/alien consciousness thing he, Alex, and presumably Bonnie are trapped in, right? Unless that wasn't really Theo, but let's say it is, or at least his consciousness/spirit.
So, what if Nora is the one guiding Alex? What if she's the one helping him to reach out to Maria? Bonding with her future son-in-law? Showing him how he'll be able to help the others defeat Tezca, Jones, et al?
Season 3 already established how much Alex has Nora in his thoughts, even if it's an idealized version of her he wants to preserve for Michael. And how much he still subconsciously feels he isn't really supposed to touch alien things. How much would I give to see him get the chance to actually know her, to experience more alien stuff and maybe even team up with Dallas for it (they're already besties, I'm putting that out there in the universe). For Michael to come to the rescue and get to have a conversation with her as well. For them to have her blessing. If they're going to be apart for so much of the season, then let Alex interact with alien stuff on his own and have some semblance of an arc during it so that he's not just a pawn or simply leverage to be used against Michael.
Idk, I just want that. Nora's in this season, and she hasn't been in any of the flashbacks yet. So maybe her story could be helping Alex get back to Michael. The whole thing gives me Stargate "ascension" vibes, so let Nora be Oma Desala and let Alex be a badass and Daniel Jackson his way out of this.

I think there is something to say about all the religious symbolism this season. The season literally starts off with it raining fire and locusts which Michael says is akin to "a couple of plagues away from the death of the firstborn". The place where Bonnie and Clyde are staying literally is an abandoned church and whenever a cross is seen Michael is in frame. Dallas and his father's connection to the bible and Lamentations specifically (the destruction of Jerusalem). The blue flame that Tezca and Max use is a symbol in the bible, I'm pretty sure. Don't know what this all means, but it's something, I think.

Western Christianity in RNM (Part Two)
Part One: Max and the Messiah (can be found here)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In contrast to Max representing and paralleling the Messiah, the show doesn’t flinch away from doing the same with Jones and the devil. Using the religious undertones and fear behind the fallen angel to depict the very character and trustworthiness of the dictator. The devil being used to further flesh out Jones’ role as an antagonist and villain. The biblical imagery behind his abilities and past pitting the character against the protagonists.
Jones rise as the dictator on the Oasis and the subsequent demolishing of his family and triad are used to parallel Lucifer’s fall. Creating the imagery of a lost soul willing to trade everything for a grasp at power. As Jones himself says in 3x02 “{the dictator} tortured my parents. The day he killed them a part of me died too”. Setting up what Jones was capable of even before the writers revealed that he was the ‘dictator’ and the ‘devil’. Furthermore, in 3x12 when Michael has access to Jones’ mind he claims Jones murdered his triad that “… you murdered your family for power” (John 8:44 … {the devil} was a murder from the beginning…).This concept of a ‘man’ destroying and forsaking his own family including his ‘father’ for the sake of power echoing easily against the story of Lucifer’s fall. The fallen angel reportedly forsook God because he made humans with more power and granted them dominion over the Earth. Jealousy and greed making the angel seek more power at the expense of his own people and God’s love (Jude 1:6 and angels who did not keep their own designated place of power, but abandoned their proper dwelling place… Isaiah 14:13-14 … {Lucifer} saying I will exalt my throne above the stars of God…). This grasp at power at the price of those closest to them and resulting in a ‘fall from heaven’, whether it be Lucifer being cast out or Jones crashing to Earth, uniting both figures.
Tumblr media
In addition, the Oasis (and the dragon-fruit tree) are used to symbolize the Garden of Eden, the perfect world before the ‘fall of man’ which made the world belong to the devil and subsequently brought pain and suffering into the world. In that garden a serpent appears to Eve, one who deceives her into causing the fall (Genesis 3:1 now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field..). The devil having taken up the image of a serpent, much like Jones and his followers. As Noah informed Max in 1x13 “we are Ophichus Max! The man and the serpent. The serpent and the man. They’re not killing each other. They are one”. Since Jones had taken up the Ophichus imagery to represent himself and his place on the Oasis. He himself representing what Ophichus is, as pointed out by Clyde in 4x02 “Ophichus will rise again” referring to his triads attempts to resurrect Jones.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, Jones much like the devil uses his abilities (healing and empathy) to manipulate the main cast. Throughout the first half of season three Jones uses his own abilities and knowledge of their home world to try and manipulate Isobel, Michael, and Max into trusting him. He does this to further his own needs and wants, so he can make Max’s body healthy and take it for his own benefit. This manipulation continues throughout his stay on the show, as he uses his cunning to try and get Liz to join him in 3x11 as well as to pit the main cast against each other during the events of 3x12. These traits of manipulation and cunning are shared with the devil, as he is claimed to have tricked Eve in the garden of Eden (Revelation 12:9 … as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness..). The devil is characterized by this continued trickery and manipulation (John 8:44 … when {the devil} speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources…). Jones attempts to use his cunning to make himself a sympathetic character, disguise himself as Max’s last hope and the answer to the main casts ‘prayers’.
Tumblr media
In addition, to this cunning his attempt to make himself appear like Max parallels the devil’s attempts to appear good. The fact the characters share the same face, and Jones pretends to be Max from 3x05 to 3x07 used to communicate this idea to the audience. Because Jones shares the same physical appearance as the ‘savior’ (2 Corinthians 11:14 …Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light). The idea of Max and Jones being physically the same but different even foreshadowed by Isobel in 2x10 when she tells Max that “Louise said the devil would come. I think something evil was after them, but it wasn’t you”.
Tumblr media
Lastly Max’s existence being for the destruction of Jones parallels the coming of the Messiah to defeat the devil. Like Nora created Max as a weapon against the dictator, God made his son flesh so he could overcome Satan (1 John 3:8 …the Son of God was manifested that He might destroy the world of the devil. Hebrews 2:14 …{the Messiah} might destroy him who had power of death, that is, the devil). Something Max accomplishes with the help of the main cast, killing Jones with part of his own sword, which Michael gives to him. Much like how the archangel Michael fights the dragon (the devil) in Revelations 12:7, and binds him in hell.

Hey! It's your Malex secret santa here 🤫 do you have a headcanon about who took that photo of Alex and Michael in high school with their guitars?
Hey 👽
Oh boy, I love this questions! Who took it indeed? I'm torn between Sanders and Rosa.
Given that we don't know, as far as I can tell, where the photo is taken... it could potentially be at the Sanders' Auto. Which would support the idea that Sanders took the photo. But this begs the question how, when and why.
More likely is probably that Rosa took the photo. It's her guitar(? at least she has also played that same one multiple times in HS) - and I think it's a compelling idea. Did she hang out with them? At least when they all played guitar... maybe they all took classes together? How much did she know about their relationship in HS? Given that they kept their relationship pretty much a secret to everyone else this is curious.
I could also see an argument being made for either of the Evans as well, but I think I'm ultimately leaning towards Rosa 🖤
Dang, I feel like I'm asking more questions than I'm answering, so sorry about that! Hope this helped you a little bit at least!

i love how prime's death was brutal. i love how he became fucked up and ugly. i love how rick abandoned all tech to resort to pure basics to show his frustration. i love how each hit really makes you feel the impact every time. i love prime's voice acting. i love how he laughs at our rick and taunts him until the only sounds he can make are increasingly gurgled screams. i love the subtle ringing sound during the scene that makes you feel like you're getting sick. i love how prime's face is reduced to an unrecognised pulp. i love how our rick is as cold as stone through the whole scene. i love how he doesn't celebrate. i love his quiet realisation that his sweet revenge is hollow and unfulfilling. i love how he wears his bloodied, tear streaked face for far too long.
i love how the whole scenario was unsatisfying and unneededly cruel. i love how rick isn't made out to be a hero for this, because he isn't.

Choosing to make my own post instead of reblogging because I don't want to bother OP. All respect to them though.
I like looking back at posts like these because of how much current Rick’s character development has made him resemble this pre-season 3 fanon Rick. Of course he doesn't talk exactly like that but the overwhelming impression of the character is the same.
We no longer see him insulting and beating up on Morty like we used to. Instead there have been a lot more heartfelt scenes between them and many instances where Rick's protectiveness over Morty has been purposefully emphasized.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's astounding really. There were momentary glimpses into this loving side of Rick in seasons 1 and 2, which is what fans were picking up on, but that's all they really were at the time. Crass jokes and abusive behavior used to be his default. Now it has practically flipped and the clearly abusive moments are the rarity.
This may actually be why the show's comedy has changed too. The Smith family as a whole has gotten healthier and more considerate of each other so the writers can't rely on insult humor and biting sarcasm between the main characters as much. I think it's a good thing in the grand scheme of things. The show is evolving along with the characters. But it certainly contributes to the most recent seasons feeling noticeably different, and that's either an upgrade or a downgrade depending on what type of fan you ask.

Who says science isn't exciting?
4x04 Dear Mama
Hi, and welcome back to my science meta! I'm actually writing this merely a few hours after watching the finale, and I haven't gotten a chance to rewatch any of season 4. So this might get updated in the future as I intend to rewatch the entire show to give you the best science breakdown possible!
Anyway, this is not about the finale, it's about 4x04 and science. Hence I will ignore all my feelings about this episode, and focus on my favourite thing in the world: science!
So buckle your seat-belts, deconnect all your braincells, and prepare yourself to dive into some alien made-up science!
(Content warning for this meta, I talk about squids a lot, because as you can see from my username, I like that animal)
We start up with a dialogue between Isobel and Liz:
Isobel: "All right, uh, Dr. Dyson, why don't you tell me about this, uh, alien ectoplasm, hmm?"
Liz: "Oh, I prefer the term "goo," but it's technically epidermal tissue. Mm-hmm."
The ectoplasm is the outer layer of a cell's cytoplasm. The ectoplasm is usually of an elastic texture.
The cytoplasm is the all of the material in an eukaryotic cell, enclosed by the cell membrane, excluding the cell nucleus.
Euraryotic cells are cells whose nucleus is enclosed by a nuclear envelope.
The cell nucleus is what contains all of the cell's genome (all genetic information of an organism).
So, the thing is, what we see on screen looks like skin that has been shed. Which is not what ectoplasm is. And I really don't know why Isobel would mention that. I guess one could theorise that after spending many hours around people (Liz and Kyle) who talk about biology, one would absorb some of that vocabulary.
However, Liz indeed corrects her, by saying something scientifically correct! Skin is indeed epidermal tissue.
Epidermal tissue is the outmost cell layer of the primary plant body. So, really, humans are plants and therefore the outer layer of skin, since our skin is composed of 3 layers, one of which is called the epidermis (corresponding to the outer layer), which is an other word for epidermal tissue.
I know this is a weird thing to be proud of, but the fact that they used correct terms (as far as I know) is pretty cool. Just afterwards, Liz mentions the third helix and hence it is definitely alien. Which, personally, I didn't need to look at it under a microscope to tell. The skin sample glowed. Human skin, as far as I know, doesn't do that.
But, better be safe than sorry. It's always good to check your results, and give background to the results that were obtained.
***
The next science is something that kinda confused me at first, and then seemed to make some sense. Liz seems to be walking around the desert with a metal detector (spectrometer). And she says:
"Yeah. I rigged it so that it would locate the alien tech component in alien biology. I mean, at least I hope I did."
A spectrometer is a scientific instrument used to separate and measure spectral (over a spectrum) components of a physical phenomenon.
There are light spectrometers, that can separate white light (visible light) and measure the individual bands of colour that compose the light (called a spectrum). There are mass spectrometers which measure the different masses of the atoms or molecules in a gas.
There are other types of spectrometers, like a magnetic one, which is what I had initially assumes Liz had used, but turns out a magnetic spectrometer requires very specific conditions.
Then, I decided to look further into mass spectrometer. It appears that it would work on solids rather than just on gasses. We then can conclude that Liz probably used a mass spectrometer, and tweaked it so that it would "detect" the change in mass between alien DNA (which contains a third helix, which I'm guessing must affect it's mass), from the rest of the desert.
Well, she does find an odd change in mass, in, you know, a truck buried under sand. Very normal, of course.
***
Liz saying "For the first time in forever, the science doesn't make any sense to me." really really describes my constant state watching that show
***
Liz and Kyle science!
Liz: "Kyle. What if the alien cells aren't dead? What if they are only playing dead? Like an octopus does when it-it's scared and it turns into coral."
Kyle: "You're talking chromatophores."
Octopuses (I had to google the plural of octopus, and I'm just going with what google answered) wan indeed turn into coral! It's fascinating to see (here's a youtube video for you). Squids can also change their colour (which I can actually talk about a lot, I have done extensive research on squids 😅😂).
Squids and octopuses have cells called chromatophores that have the particularity of changing colour. These cells are situated just below the the surface of the skin, which is thin enough to show the colour of these cells.
Chromatophores basically work by having a center that is elastic and contains a certain colour. The elasticity means that when it stretches out, the coulour would appear brighter, and hence give the illusion of changing colour (since then the colours seems more visible). This elastic center, like a little pouch, is controlled by nerves and muscles. These cells are found in a large number, in varying sizes. Hence, it can create a full camouflage. Thing of it like pointillism, a painting made of thousands of little dots of different colour.
To go back to the alien science, basically the alien cells taken from the skin sample have the same property than squids and octopuses. I guess you could say, that I, squid kid, am an alien. (Sorry, I had to, I have been saving this from the moment I watched the episode. It is my moment to shine).
By introducing the sample from the blue eyes, it is like saying "hey don't be afraid, I'm a friend", and the squid/octopus basically reverts to their "original form".
(Moral of the story: don't scare me. I'll turn into coral 😂)
(Side note, but this is one of the reasons thesquidkid is my url)
***
I could talk about Tezca and Jones' body. But I genuinely have no idea what is going on, and I don't even want to know. However, I am always happy to talk theories and ideas!
***
This is the end of the meta for this episode! It took me most of the day ngl. I was writing in during the breaks in my lectures, because I was so excited to finally talk about how cool squids are 😂
I don't really know when I'll upload the next one, but I'll keep doing them episode by episode, instead of all in one post. I did that for the first three seasons and that was not a great idea for my sanity. You have no idea how stressful it is to write a full meta all on tumblr drafts. I was so scared it would crash and I'd lose everything. I guess I like to live dangerously 😂

in the topic of hit rick ships i think its interesting seeing hiw rick ships have changed over time like rn its primarly prime/rick or bp/rick vs i still have distinctive memories of like 2014-2016 when it was a mix of stanchez, evil rick/c137. honorary mentions to miamicop or. idk if there were set surgeon ships everyone was nuts for him tho. bp/rick being reserved for flesh curtains era rick which was also the primary fanart (sooo much young stanchez). idk i like getting to witness different fandom eras. i remember all the soecific fan theories that were such accepted fanon it was almost canon that are now fully disproven. ppl were convinced evil morty was that morty from the opening n c137 abandoned him. it was fun

i guess i just have low standards but i like rick and morty style of serialized and episodic mixed together. don’t get me wrong it’s super cool and gratifying to see them connect plot points together and getting that pay off. but idk i enjoy it just as much when it’s one offs. and it’s not like the one shot eps are like Filler or full of nothing burgers. they still establish character traits, dynamics, and often have the funniest bits of the season. rnm could Definitely benefit from not acting like having serious emotional moments is the same as pulling teeth out- but at the same time, rick and morty are silly guys. that’s like a core aspect of me liking the show ya know? they’re dumb and messy, and so are the writers, but hey! they’re getting there…i think.

March for Meta Season 4
March Meta Day 4 Season 4: Sometimes Alex gets the words right
With Alex missing so much of Season 4 and the drama of the last few episodes, I tend to forget about the first few episodes of the season.  They tend to be eclipsed by all that comes later so distant from the ending that it’s hard to remember they matter.  But Alex was very clear with Michael as they moved their relationship forward.  It’s amazing to see the transition from the early seasons where his regard for Michael was almost spoken in metaphor, Michael maybe missing the “I love you, you matter to me” in “I want to know who you are” and “You asked me to.”  There is no subtlety in S4, I think it’s Alex’s romantic equivalent of “I left nice behind in the Middle East.”  He is no longer hesitating in saying what he means and mostly what he means is Michael is the most important person in his life,
In 4x01 he tells him:  “Hey, I can live without that gazebo.  What I can’t live without is you.”
It’s a lovely way of telling Michael he prioritizes their future over nostalgia for one of the few positive memories of his childhood.  He trusted Michael with the gazebo, and Michael takes it to mean he trusts his with it physically, but I think what Alex was really doing was trusting him with it emotionally.  He was letting Michael see his vulnerabilities, sharing a dream he never told anyone else about.  Michael might have broken the physical gazebo, but he didn’t break the trust Alex placed him, he didn’t break the feeling of safety and support he gives Alex that allowed Alex to share that with thim.  Alex lets Michael know that he is the important part of the story not the gazebo.
4x02 is not a favorite of mine, but I am going to focus on something that makes me smile.
Alex: “Like a piece of alien tech, I don’t like being parted from my alien.”
Is it cheesy?  Absolutely.  But that’s what I love about it.  I love seeing Alex and Michael in a place where they can be cheesy with each other, where it’s not all shouted love confessions but bad puns that let them know how much they love each other.  Also, I think it’s important that Alex let Michael know why he wants to take the console.  His priority is getting back to Michael as soon as possible.  He is focused on Michel and being with him.  Michael is his alien and I love that for them.
