It's always bothered me that when people adapt Kafka's Metamorphosis they depict Gregor Samsa as a roach. Cockroaches do not undergo metamorphosis. They are born as nymphs which are just smaller wingless versions of the adult form.
Kafka writes that Gregor can only enjoy rotten food. Which also makes him not at all roach-like. Roaches strongly prefer fresh vegetables to rotten ones.
And, of course, he gets stuck on his back, not something roaches struggle with nearly as much as beetles.
That's why always imagined him as a beetle. Which implies that the man Gregor was a larvae for all his pre-bug life. I thought that was the whole point of the story... We're all grubs, but Gregor reached the next stage though sadly none of the grubs in his family could understand him.
HI ON THIS VALENTINES DAY I WOULD LIKE TO PROFESS MY LOVE FOR ROACHES! They’re just little guys and everyone is so mean to them and they don’t deserve to die for the crime of being small and in the way!! They can hiss and purr and chirp and they’re super cool (they can survive a nuclear blast!! What’s not cool about that!!!) and they can form democratic social groups and you can even train them and they’re not evil or gross and they deserve love too!!!
String identified:

I have to do one of my least favourite things today, which is going through the dubia roach colony and cull excess males. If you don't do it, there's too much competition so they kill each other's young, so you kind of have to do it. I'm pretty sure the smaller/weaker males have been getting bullied and had their wings nibbled on as well, but it still doesn't make putting them down any more fun. We always put them in a tub in the coldest drawer in the freezer, so at least they just go to sleep.
Alex Wild got me interested in attaphila fungicola with this first super cute photo of the myrmecophilous roaches that live with leaf cutter (fungi farming) ants.
I think their habit of harmlessly hitching rides on ants could inspire a line of adorable felt pillboxes. Can you see it?
The one aspect I truly didn't expect when I started working in tech repair was how truly gross some of these items are. Like yeah there's mystery crusty/sticky shit and old food and people's ear juiced airpods but there's also like cat pissed-on and human vomited on and roach infested computers which are uncommon but uh extra special. Like luckily it's against policy for us to work on biohazard or insect infested stuff but we still run into it more often than you'd think and it really surprised me when I started working with this stuff.
