A few months ago I started building a rally computer out of an ESP32 and some assorted bits and bobs. It kept crashing. So I did the only reasonable thing, bought a thinkpad on Craigslist, installed Linux, and started writing the same thing in Python¹.

It's actually going pretty well²!

1: Why python, when I'm much more fond of other languages? Good library support for gpsd and ncurses.

2: insofar as I had to force myself to stop tinkering with it because it was after midnight

Anyways, the real heroes of the Dakar are the support/medical staff because I would have already strangled half of the participants. "I can still go on, help me lift my bike" sir, your bike is missing a wheel and you have a gash on your forehead that requires multiple stitches, settle down.
