Robbie Fairchild (born June 9, 1987) is an American dancer and actor. He is best known for originating the role Jerry Mulligan in the musical An American in Paris, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, starred in Brigadoon at New York City Center, and as Munkustrap in the 2019 film Cats. Fairchild became an apprentice at the New York City Ballet in 2005, and joined the company's corps de ballet the following year. He became a soloist in 2007 and principal dancer in 2009. During his time in the company, he had danced works by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky and Justin Peck. Most recently, he has been a member of the dance company performing in the new Justin Peck musical, Illinoise, which celebrates the music of Sufjan Stevens.

                                                                                 

At 36, Fairchild has achieved a great deal. Talent, passion, determination, and luck have all played their part. But is the Dance for everyone?

“If you want to pursue dance as a career, as in a life’s work, then there’s not really an option, you’re just chosen,” says Fairchild.

“It’s something you just feel, and it requires so much hard work and mental discipline. You don’t get to scream, swear, or make an ugly face, but you do pretend you’re in pure bliss and that requires an emotional and mental strength. Yes, it’s mentally grueling and physically challenging, but it’s high risk with high reward. There’s so much joy that comes from dancing.”

That said, there are many who wonder what it’s like to pirouette in the air. Is there a feeling of euphoria?

“As a dancer, you want to achieve weightlessness as though you’re flying. There are certain moments where you do feel like you’re flying, and it’s amazing. There’s a euphoric moment when everything just clicks. When the coordination and tempo are right, it launches you into the jump, and there are moments of bliss. But the zero gravity doesn’t come without hard work and effort.”

I was going to put this in a different post but I changed my mind so here I go.

Laurie Davidson shouldn't have even been casted as Mr. Mistoffelees! He doesn't have a strong history in dance and was casted the hardest fucking role to dance WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO DANCE! ROBBIE FAIRCHILD WAS RIGHT THERE! I'M GONNA SKIN TINY DICK TOM ALIVE! And before anyone says "But he went to a Drama and Music college he might've been able to pull it off" and sure, maybe, but here's the thing, he's never been in a musical. Google his acting history, Davidson hasn't been in a single musical aside from Cats. So, logically, you probably shouldn't cast a guy who can't dance in the one role that is so hard to dance technically that actual legitimate Danseurs are typically casted because it's so hard.

Then take a look at Fairchild and BOY! WOULD YA LOOK AT THAT! He went to the school of American Ballet, was nominated for a Tony in acting, and aside from Cats, was in two different musicals. Seems like he can handle playing Mr. Mistoffelees. Hey, here's a gander, why don't we switch the two actors? PROBLEM FUCKING SOLVED! You now have the best dancer (aside from Steven McRae and the other back ground dancers, although I don't know how they compare) playing the hardest role in the musical and the guy who can barely hold a tune in music lessons so he can build up the chops to play Munkustrap well. Easy fucking peasey.

God Damn I should've been the director for this fucking movie, I know shit about producing a movie but I know a thing or two about storytelling, characterization, and music. More than Tiny Dick Tom Hooper does apparently.

I hope this isn't a long post, but I have so much to say about Munkustrap in the Cats 2019 Movie. Of course, he was my childhood favorite character.

So, Munkustrap's my next character to talk about my headcanons and theories about. You know how Robbie Fairchild had the role of Munkustrap for the movie, he says you can call me the narrator, right? He said it in a way that I felt like he didn't know how Munkustrap's character was gonna be like. Robbie played the role of Munkustrap amazingly and his characteristics described my view on Munkustrap as a 10 year old girl.

I saw Munkustrap as the heroic type. Strong, wise, and kind. I also saw him as a highly sensitive soul, always caring for others and putting them first before himself. Now, when it comes to love for Munkustrap, he never really thought about it. Let me explain.

He's the leader and protector of the Tribe. He's always hardworking and responsible. Making sure the kittens are protected and well taken care of. Always on the look out to see if Macavity's around to intrude any events. He has a lot on his plate.

That may make Munkustrap an awkward type of cat when it comes to romance, because he has never experienced true love. He does understand love and he's NOT a cold hearted character. I'm just saying that he's never felt destined to find a cat who he truly loved. That was until he met Victoria.

He knew that Victoria was an outcast because she didn't have Jellicle blood in her, but he actually accepted her. There were other female cats at the Tribe, but Victoria, out of all them is what grab Munkustrap's attention. He danced with her at the graveyard. He gave her love and affection. He even protected her. He also wondered where has she been after Mistoffelees took her back to the Tribe. And when Munkustrap saw that bracelet on Victoria's wrist, oh boy was that his worst fear. Last but not least, Munkustrap told her everything about the Tribe and showed concern for her after she returned inside the building after singing Beautiful Ghosts. So, why did he do all of this for her? The answer is, he LOVED her.

Victoria may not had realized this because she's on her own journey as a Jellicle Cat. That's the sad part of my headcanon and theory about Munkustrap.

Watching Cats (2019) DvD Commentary

Thoughts as I watch:

Tom is literally basing this entire movie on the one time he saw Cats in 1981 when he was 8 years old

He called the movie a coming of age film about Victoria meeting characters that effect her and that Tugger represents the sin of lust (yes I am laughing)

He said abandoned three times in a row to describe Grizabella

Tom made up the thing about Grizabella used to be with Macavity happened because he wanted to cut out the idea that she was a prostitute

Has Bustopher eat trash because he thought that's what cats would be more interested in

The pause in Bustopher Jones when he says to gather the cats is a meta joke about the cats actually being people

The food was CGI

"Sees the implication of his unchecked appetites" in reference to Victoria and Bustopher Jones

Hooper brought his niece and nephew to set to play on the Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer set

He keeps insisting that there is a learning and growing arc for Victoria, but I have no idea what he's talking about

He has barely talked about the characters as actual characters and mostly just talks about how great it is to work with famous celebrity number five or how they're symbolical. I think he's making things up at this point

He added the love story because he thought Misto trying to figure out how to be a magician was a good parallel with Victoria's story of finding herself

Originally the first barge scene was longer with a lot of improv from James and Rebel as Growltiger went on

"Robbie Fairchild is brilliant" that is the only thing Tom said that makes sense

This man really said "women can be the god of cats in 2019"

Judie and Ian were the ones to decide that Gus and Old D had a thing...well at least they followed the pattern of cats actors making weird decisions for their characters

I've come to the conclusion that Tom chose his cast based on which famous actors he's always wanted to work with

Tom has no idea how to describe choreography...just like how he has no idea how to film it

Giving Victoria a solo to sing was ALW's idea

He thinks the call and response of Beautiful Ghosts and Memory is brilliant and doesn't understand how he fucked that up

They almost cut "Moments of Hapiness"

He keeps talking about how great this film is for women, but where is Demeter sir!

He didn't know that it's Jellylorum that sings Gus' song and because Ian couldn't tell what the relationship between the two was he cut out her singing it for him

He talks about the advantage of mixing the CGI with the practical clothing, and I'm like, you know what would be even better? No CGI!

I don't know who's playing Bomba, but she was the first person to be cast in Cats

He said that he thinks Macavity works better as a solo and it didn't need to be a duet...I have never felt more like murder in my whole life

Taylor Swifts dad gave him the idea for the catnip

He likes the idea of Macavity being evil yet still plays by the rules...why?

He's talking about the changes from the musical to Mr Mistoffelees, and boy is he not bringing up that Tugger is the one that sings the number

Talks about community like there was any in this movie

This man has no idea who Jemima/Sillabub is, does he?

He finally mentioned Mette Towley as Cassandra at least. Recognize that she's the best character in this film goddamit!

Apparently he watched the 98 film several times while writing the script...and yet this movie is straight

What do you think about cats 2019 version? Did you enjoy it, or dislike it?

2019 was my first experience with Cats and while I don't hate it, I don't particularly enjoy it very much either. But it had enough merit for me to watch twice, one day after another, and then my curiosity brought me to the 1998 one. So regardless of how I feel about 2019 I owe my life to it for bringing me home. At this point I'm kind of on neutral standing. If you ask me which one I'd rather watch, I'll say 98 every single time, but yeah.

My biggest issues with 2019 are Bustopher and Jenny being laughing stocks. Everything else I can tolerate. The cgi character designs aren't necessarily my thing, but they're not horrifying or 'terrible' like a lot of people think. I do think a much stronger story could have been presented if Demeter was the protagonist and it was about her joining the Jellicles after leaving Macavity, since they wanted a protagonist for it so bad. Vic being an audience stand-in is sort of unnecessary to me. But the actors involved did the best they could and I think if they were given the chance to do the stage version they would be incredible at it. McKellen as Gus was wonderful and Derulo put on a decent Tugger. And even in 2019 I fell in love with Munk so thank you Robbie Fairchild for being so charming!!

My favorite bits of 2019 are probably M&R and Gus. 2019 Mungo and Rumple are hot. I love the peppy arrangement in most productions but I also love the jazzy one. And I'm a sucker for Theatre Cat time and time again. It makes me cry more than any other part of the show. Also Skimbleshanks was pretty good but to be fair you'd have to fuck up really bad to make that song unenjoyable.

So yeah. I think 2019 missed the mark a bit, and there are a lot of things I would change about it if I could, but it def has merit. And like I said I'm thankful that it brought me to where I am.
