Work in Progress Wednesday
A snippet of something I'm slowly chipping away at, set in the Constance Morse Lives AU
Dorothea Louise Frazil died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Oxford on 12th September 1990 surrounded by close family and friends. Dorothea attended St Margaret Hall and began her journalistic career in the newsroom at the Oxford Mail before being deployed to the battlefields of Korea where she worked tirelessly to ensure that the common voice of Korean citizens was heard by the press and the wider world. She returned to the Oxford Mail and has been the newspaper’s longest running and first female editor in chief.
Dorothea was witty, charming, caring and a verbal sparring partner to anyone who found themselves having a conversation with her. An avid smoker in her youth, in her later years, she campaigned for more awareness in schools on the dangers of lung cancer whilst also starting ‘The Campaign Against Living Miserably’ to raise awareness about young men and mental health.
She was the youngest child of General Sir Robert Frazil and Rose, nee Lady Martindale, sister to Captain Peter George Frazil and Henry Louis Frazil. She is survived by her middle brother, sister-in-law Venetia Frazil, her nieces Alice and Tatiana, her nephew E. Morse and his wife Monica Morse, and her great nieces and nephews, Constance Lucy Morse, Joyce Dorothea Morse, Frederick Francis Morse, and Peter Robert Morse.
A service of thanksgiving will be held at St Bartholomew’s Chapel, Cowley Road, Oxford- OX4 2AJ on 30th September 1990.
For any further information, please contact Henry Frazil or E. Morse.
Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Mary Did You Know (revised lyrics), sung by Gloria Fanchiang
Gloria Fanchiang is a friend and leader involved with multicultural worship. She says, "enjoy this rewrite of 'Mary Did You Know' by Jennifer Henry that honors Mary's voice, power and agency."
youtube
+++
“Mary, Did You Know?” is a Christmas song with lyrics written by Mark Lowry in 1984, and music written by Buddy Greene in 1991.
New lyrics by Jennifer Henry, an "activist, theologian, strategist" with the United Church of Canada. https://www.facebook.com/jennifer.henry27
Mary did you know, that your ancient words would still leap off our pages? Mary did you know, that your spirit song would echo through the ages?
Did you know that your holy cry would be subversive word, that the tyrants would be trembling when they know your truth is heard?
Mary did you know, that your lullaby would stir your own Child’s passion? Mary did you know, that your song inspires the work of liberation?
Did you know that your Jubilee is hope within the heart of all who dream of justice, who yearn for it to start?
The truth will teach, the drum will sound, healing for the pain The poor will rise, the rich will fall. Hope will live again
Mary did you know, that we hear your voice for the healing of the nations? Mary did you know, your unsettling cry can help renew creation?
Do you know, that we need your faith, the confidence of you, May the God that you believe in, be so true.
+++
Gloria sings the powerful words with a clear and clarion voice. And the new lyrics by Jennifer are close to Mary's original song of the Magnificat.

Thank you @booksnpictures for tagging me. <3 I'm so sorry to be this late. I just haven't had the time. I've been really busy for months and gosh! I long for a break that certainly doesn't seem to come around. I haven't had much time to read either this year because I'm just dealing with a lot.
Amount of books you’ve read so far: 15 books and 3 audiobooks.
Best book you’ve read so far in 2022: Reread Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoï. Nothing tops this book. I feel like this book is a study of humans and how they behave in certain circumstances. I'll never not recommend it. Don't even look at the blurb, just read it.
Another book worth mentioning which wasn't a reread is My Policeman by Bethan Roberts. The writing is magnificently beautiful. It's about this school teacher falling in love with a guy who's gay and they marry each other. Later on we find out that this guy shares an intimate affair with a museum curator who's also homosexual. The book is very intimate and delicate. It offers a really good insight into homophobia. Oh, and the book's being adapted to a movie that's releasing this year, I suppose. If you're thinking of watching the movie, I beg you to read the book too.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2022: I didn't read any series so none.
New release you haven’t read yet but want to: On Sun Swallowing by Dakota Warren. I really want to read this.
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: Well, I've never been good at keeping up with book news...
Biggest surprise favourite new author (debut or new to you): Bethan Roberts, I guess. Also, a poet not an author, Silas Denver Melvin. She writes so beautifully. Her poems made me question a lot of things.
Newest fictional crush: Nah there isn't any.
Book that made you cry: My Policeman, again.
Book that made you happy: Writers at Work: The Paris Review Interviews, First Series by Malcolm Cowley.
Happy won't be the perfect word for how it made me feel. Content, yes.
Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): I bought What we talk about when we talk about love by Raymond Carver (Vintage Classics) and I love the cover, really. I haven't finished reading it yet. I'm loving the book, by the way.
What books do you need to read by the end of the year? There's no such book that I need to read by the end of this year. I'll read whatever I feel like.
Open tag. Anyone who feels like doing this, go ahead.

Now playing:
Fantastic Voyage Various Artists (Saint Etienne)
By the turn of the 80s, the impact of David Bowie’s ground-breaking Berlin recordings – the synths, the alienation, the drily futuristic production - was being felt on music across Europe. What’s more, the records being made were reflecting back and influencing Bowie’s own work – 1979’s “Lodger” and 1980’s “Scary Monsters” owed a debt to strands of German kosmische (Holger Czukay), new electronica (Patrick Cowley, Harald Grosskopf), and the latest works from old friends and rivals like Robert Fripp, Peter Gabriel and Scott Walker, all of whom had been re-energised by the fizz of 1977.

Book Recommendations: Atmospheric and Leisurely Paced
The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller
It is a perfect July morning, and Elle, a fifty-year-old happily married mother of three, awakens at "The Paper Palace" - the family summer place which she has visited every summer of her life. But this morning is different: last night Elle and her oldest friend Jonas crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, over the next twenty-four hours, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband, Peter, and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love, Jonas, if a tragic event hadn't forever changed the course of their lives. As Heller colors in the experiences that have led Elle to this day, we arrive at her ultimate decision with all its complexity. Tender yet devastating, The Paper Palace considers the tensions between desire and dignity, the legacies of abuse, and the crimes and misdemeanors of families.
Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel
Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal - an experience that shocks him to his core. Two centuries later a famous writer named Olive Llewellyn is on a book tour. She's traveling all over Earth, but her home is the second moon colony, a place of white stone, spired towers, and artificial beauty. Within the text of Olive's bestselling pandemic novel lies a strange passage: a man plays his violin for change in the echoing corridor of an airship terminal as the trees of a forest rise around him. When Gaspery-Jacques Roberts, a detective in the Night City, is hired to investigate an anomaly in the North American wilderness, he uncovers a series of lives upended: The exiled son of an earl driven to madness, a writer trapped far from home as a pandemic ravages Earth, and a childhood friend from the Night City who, like Gaspery himself, has glimpsed the chance to do something extraordinary that will disrupt the timeline of the universe.
Under the Golden Sun by Jenny Ashcroft
Rose Hamilton is in desperate need of a life change when she reads the want ad in the newspaper for a companion needed to escort a young orphaned child to Australia. There are so many reasons she should ignore the advertisement―the war, those treacherous winter seas, her family, her fiancé but she can't help herself. Within weeks she is boarding an enormous convoy, already too attached to five-year-old Walter. Unfortunately, the cattle station home of Walter's family isn't anything like either of them were told to expect. Rose can't leave this little boy who she's grown to love until he is happy and settled, and she knows the key to this is Walter's wounded fighter pilot uncle. But how will she ever part with Walter? And what if he isn't the only reason she wants to stay?
The Searcher by Tana French
Retired detective Cal Hooper moves to a remote village in rural Ireland. His plans are to fix up the dilapidated cottage he's bought, to walk the mountains, to put his old police instincts to bed forever. Then a local boy appeals to him for help. His brother is missing, and no one in the village, least of all the police, seems to care. And once again, Cal feels that restless itch. Something is wrong in this community, and he must find out what, even if it brings trouble to his door.
