Black square (“and so on to infinity…” inscribed in Latin around its edges) representing the nothingness that was prior to the universe, as pictured by the great occult philosopher Robert Fludd, who himself passed into infinity Sept 8 in 1637.

“The Rose surmounts the thorny cross, the whole resembling the sign of Venus in which the solar circle triumphs over the cross of matter. We may interpret the motto as saying that “spiritual knowledge gives solace to souls,” of whom bees are a venerable symbol." - Joscelyn Godwin, in Robert Fludd: Hermetic Philosopher of Two Worlds
DAT ROSA MEL APIBUS - THE ROSE GIVES THE BEES HONEY
THE SOLAR CIRCLE TRIUMPHS OVER THE CROSS OF MATTER

Quote
I once organized a talk on black, and I started with black as a symbol, black as a color, and the connotations of black in our culture where our whole system is imposed on us in terms of darkness, lightness, blackness, whiteness. Goodness and badness are associated with black. As an artist and painter I would eliminate the symbolic pretty much, for black is interesting not as a color but as a non-color and as the absence of color. I’d like then to talk about black in art – monochrome, monotone, and the art of painting verses the art of color. Here is a quotation from Hokusai: “There is a black which is old and a black which is fresh. Lustrous black and dull black, black in sunlight and black in shadow. For the old black one must use an admixture of blue, for the dull black an admixture of white, for the lustrous black, gum must be added. Black in sunlight must have gray reflections.” I wanted to read that because that doesn’t have any meaning for us.

A decade earlier in Crimea, Asriel had been stalking a deer, as much for pleasure as necessity. He followed its light tracks across a frozen lake, delighted by the chase and his mastery of it, until he heard the crack of ice beneath his feet. He’d been a strong swimmer since childhood, and Stelmaria’s panicked barks brought his Tartar companions running to haul him free, to strip him and wrap him in fat and felt by the fire, but Asriel’s heart never fully recovered from the chill that almost took him that day. Even now it sometimes races and skips without warning, and he has suffocating dreams of those endless seconds, lungs like bricks, plunged in senseless dark, et sic in infinitum.
He feels it again, now, in the Master’s warm drawing room overlooking the gardens, blindsided by the sound of her name.

What Is Magic, part I
“Ours is a world of three parts, the Elemental, Celestial, and Intellectual. Whatever is inferior is ruled by its superior, and virtue flows from the one into the other; thus the Archetype and Artisan of all pours His all-encompassing power into us through His angels, the heavens, stars, elements, animals, plants, metals, and stones, all of which he created, and made to serve Him.
Magicians believe we may ascend by these very same steps through each world in turn, as far as the Archetypal realm, and the Maker and First Cause, from whom all things have their origin and proceed, and so we may come to enjoy not only the virtues of those noble things we already find, but also those virtues we may draw down from above. They seek the elemental in the combination of natural things according to the natural and medical sciences, and the radiant influx of celestial virtue according to the rules of the astrologers, which are then drawn together by the mathematical disciplines. All of which has been confirmed and corroborated by the power of a variety of intelligences via the medium of sacred ceremonial.”
— Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, De Occulta Philosophia
