Murder in the Wind by John D. MacDonald, cover by Bob Abbett (1960)
Robert K. (Bob) Abbett painted many exceptional paperback covers in his long career, although SF and fantasy readers probably know him best for his 1960s Ballantine Books covers for the Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan and John Carter novels. Steve Scott's comprehensive John D. MacDonald blog, The Trap of Solid Gold, informs me this copy is actually the second edition, published four years after the 1956 first edition, but in a common and confusing practice for Dell covers it's still labelled the first edition. Crime novelist Bill Crider has also featured this Bob Abbett cover on his blog. It's a good and representative example of a mid-20th century crime novel cover.
