The King in Yellow is a 1895 collection of short stories by Robert W. Chambers. The book could be categorized as early horror fiction, but it also touches on mythology, fantasy, mystery, and science fiction. There are ten stories, the first four of which mention The King in Yellow, a forbidden play which induces despair or madness in those who read it.
Along the shore the cloud waves break, The twin suns sink beneath the lake, The shadows lengthen In Carcosa. Strange is the night where black stars rise, And strange moons circle through the skies But stranger still is Lost Carcosa. Songs that the Hyades shall sing, Where flap the tatters of the King, Must die unheard in Dim Carcosa. Song of my soul, my voice is dead; Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed Shall dry and die in Lost Carcosa.
Cassilda's Song in "The King in Yellow," Act i, Scene 2.

I love late-19th c horror and fantasy novella, because they're so fucking weird and surreal. You haven't lived until you've read The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers and The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen.

As the comics use to say, Not a dream! Not a Hoax! This is really happening!
promo for the novel Eris: The Story of a Daughter of Discord, written by Robert W. Chambers (The King in Yellow) and published in 1923.
It was popular enough that the name Eris appeared on record as one of the top 50 names given to new born girls in the year 1923 for the first time and not again since then.

The Harbor-Master by Robert W. Chambers
“…unless this story is written now, I know I shall never have the courage to tell the truth about the matter—not from fear of ridicule, but because I myself shall soon cease to credit what I now know to be true.”Robert W. In the first episode of Arkham Community College, professor Aladdin Collar explores the original design of the King in Yellow, as envisioned by illustrator and author Robert W. Chambers, and how the original design was Xeroxed into oblivion as it was reprinted.

“This is the thing that troubles me, for I cannot forget Carcosa where black stars hang in the heavens; where the shadows of men’s thoughts lengthen in the afternoon, when the twin suns sink into the lake of Hali; and my mind will bear for ever the memory of the Pallid Mask. I pray God will curse the writer, as the writer has cursed the world with this beautiful, stupendous creation, terrible in its simplicity, irresistible in its truth—a world which now trembles before the King in Yellow.”

"I sing nature,
The evening stars, the tears of the morning,
The sunsets on the distant horizon,
The sky that speaks to the heart of future existence!"
