also like listen. as much as i am an obvious sucker for chrobin, look at me and my icon and my whole fe meta tags, but i gotta say. i love that chrom and robin's bond can also canonically be platonic and it changes so little about the nature of the relationship and it's importance in the plot.
like. fe awakening really said that this non-romantic relationship is so strong and so critical that it's the difference that stops the world from ending. that it can bend the laws of reality. it said that these two people can romantically love different people and still be massively important parts of each other's lives, to the point where that bond is the crux of the entire story.
do you understand how fucking cool that is? do you understand how rare it is for characters to be allowed to have a non-romantic relationship be possibly the most important one in their lives? do you even know how groundbreaking it is that romantic and non-romantic chrobin are not only both canonical story paths, but are a romantic and non-romantic relationship being placed on equal, plot-critical footing?
that shit is so, so, so important to me.

The thing about stobin is that they only work as well as they do because Robin was originally supposed to be Steve’s love interest, rather than in spite of it.
Like, what do we love about them?
They’re each other’s best friend
They’re incredibly co-dependent
They can basically read each other’s minds
They’re together so often that you can essentially treat them as one entity
They have genuine moments of emotion
These are all things that are par for the course when it comes to writing romantic relationships. You see it with Jon and Nancy (though not quite to the same level, they don’t have the Stobin Mind Meld) where they’re also each other’s best and only friend, and they also do almost everything together, and most of their genuine moments of emotion are with each other or with family.
Stobin don’t have any family or friends, because Steve’s family just doesn’t exist for some reason, and Robin was introduced to fill his empty friend slot after the stoncy divorce. Robin doesn’t have any either, because why would they flesh out a backstory for Steve’s New Girlfriend when they need to spend all their screentime establishing a believable romance?
So what we end up with is the bones of a romance that they have to hastily cover with the skin of a friendship, and they’ve already laid all that groundwork so they can’t exactly start backpedaling now.
That’s why stobin are mostly comic relief when they’re allowed to be together in s4 btw, they genuinely don’t know what to do with them now bc they didn’t intend for their relationship to be platonic (surely there’s no interesting room for growth in a close platonic relationship, that would be silly). Steve still doesn’t have a love interest, which is catastrophic for a fan favourite main character (bc amatonormativity dictates that being single is a Bad Ending and they can’t give him a Bad Ending, he can’t be punished by the narrative when he’s supposed to be finished his redemption arc) which is why he was shoehorned back with Nancy (bc they didn’t have the space to add another character just to be his love interest). (Robin gets a hint of Vickie bc denying their only explicitly canon gay character a ‘happy ending’ (read: romantic relationship) is also Very Bad, both narratively and optics-wise)
Basically, if they’d started out with the intention of making Robin Steve’s friend rather than his girlfriend, well, for one she wouldn’t exist. But secondly they’d be a lot less close than they are now. They’d be more like what we see in s4: a comedy duo, except without the same level of emotion and intimacy behind all their interactions. They literally wouldn’t have been allowed to get that close, because the number one spot in Steve’s life would’ve been reserved for his girlfriend, because again: amatonormativity dictates your romantic partner is your first priority and your most important relationship. Robin got that spot through a miracle and some gay trickery, and I for one will always be grateful.
I’m probably not the first person to mention any of this, but I’ve been thinking a lot about platonic relationships in media recently, and a lot about stobin specifically. It’s kind of sad that one of the best examples of a close platonic relationship I can think of is just a romantic relationship in a wig, but I’ll take what I can get (and god I love them anyway).

"Not, um--" Steve cleared his throat. "Not exactly. I mean, sure, for a long time, yeah. I was... I was expected to behave a certain way, and when everyone else started going on about girls then, like, yeah. I put on a show for a little while. But, you know, then I met Nancy, and I liked her more than I've ever liked another girl. More than I had ever liked anyone, at that point. I haven't really... I mean, people kinda expect it from me, because I was a little too good at pretending, but it hasn't really felt like that again. It's not realistic to expect yourself to be crazy over every cute girl you meet. Even the really, reall cute ones. So, you know, don't be so down about it. Maybe you'll meet your own Nancy one day."  "I think Nancy was already my Nancy," Dustin said, frankly, and Steve snorted. Yeah, the kid's childhood crush had never been super subtle. "I don't know, man. There was this girl, you know, at camp? Her name was Suzie. And she said she liked me and I... I liked her, too, but there was just so much going on at home, and there's so much going on now-- How am I supposed to care? It just doesn't seem worth it."  "This is going to sound like shitty advice," Steve said, continuing over Dustin's eyerolling. "But you're young. You're probably not going to meet the love of your life in middle school. You're allowed to not care about it for a few more years, if that's what you want."

Warning: Steve and Nancy do NOT get together. It's just closure with Aromantic Nancy. It's definitely Steddie. There is some flirting.
The kids, Eddie and Robin were sitting in the living room watching the movie. Meanwhile, Steve and Nancy were cleaning up in the kitchen. They kept glancing at one another when the other wasn't looking. The air needed to be cleared. Steve and Nancy stopped what they were doing at the exact same time.
"I need to talk to you," they said in unison, and they laughed.
"Badass, shotgun wielding ladies should go first," Steve laughed.
"I broke up with Jonathan," Nancy said.
Steve stilled. Shit. They hadn't talked about that moment in the Upside Down where Steve told her about the feelings he had thought he felt at the time.
"Nance," Steve started.
"Wait, let me finish," Nancy said. "I broke up with Jonathan because it was something I needed to do. We've been over for a long time. In fact, we never should have gotten together in the first place. We started off really badly, and we never apologized to you for that."
"Nancy, you don't have -"
"Steve Harrington, let me finish! It wasn't okay what we did. Even though I was so blinded by my grief, I ended up hurting you, and that was not okay. Just because I was hurting doesn't excuse me for hurting you, and I'm really sorry," Nancy said. "And for the record, you were never a shitty boyfriend. You were right to be worried about the consequences. We were reckless. It was definitely me who was the shitty girlfriend."
"I mean, yeah, it wasn't okay that you did that, but I know how hard it is to be honest with yourself," Steve said. "Let alone with the people around you, especially after everything that happened. And come on, you weren't that bad."
"You were blinded by love," Nancy scoffed. "I'm not sure that I will ever be good at romantic relationships. Honestly, I'm not sure if it's something that I will ever want."
"Hey, that's okay!" Steve said, clutching her shoulders. "If that's something you don't want, that's more than okay. So, this isn't you trying to get back together with me?"
"I'm sorry, what?!" Eddie exclaimed, walking into the kitchen.
He crossed his arms, his features struggling to contain his obvious jealousy.
"What?! No, no! I swear. Eddie, I swear I'm not trying to get back together with him," Nancy said.
"Okay, that's good to know. Cool," Eddie said casually, and then he breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank God! I did not want to pretend to fight a woman, nor do I actually want to fight a woman, especially Nancy Wheeler, because there is no way in hell that I can take you. Nope! Nope! Was I being obvious?"
"You were both very obvious to me," Nancy laughed.
"I told you she'd figure it out," Steve said.
Eddie wrapped his arms around him from behind and planted a kiss on his cheek.
"Mine!"
"So, about what I told you. . .you don't think I'm like a freak? Because I feel like it's something that I should want," Nancy said.
"Look, Nance, you are a freak," Steve said. "But so is everyone here, and I think it's really okay to be one, to not conform to everyone's ideas of what they think life should be like. You can like whatever the hell you want to, dislike whatever you want, as long as we're all able to come together. More importantly, it's alright not to be good at something. You're not perfect, Nancy. You're a freak!"
"I'm gonna fucking cry!" Eddie said.
"And if it is something that you do want one day, then it's up to you. Your choice. No matter what, though, you're going to go out there, and you're going to be a brilliant investigative reporter whose partner is definitely a dog with a little fedora. Nancy and Ace Wheeler. You know, like ace reporter? They'll make comic books about you," Steve said.
"I would read the shit out of those," Eddie said.
"And just because you don't want a romantic relationship, it doesn't mean that you're alone. You've got friends and family who love you. We're going to save every single one of your stories, and we'll make scrapbooks out of them because that's what family does," Steve said. "And they forgive. You forgave me, and I have long since forgiven you."
Nancy smiled tearfully at him and threw her arms around his neck.
"Group hug!" Eddie yelled and wrapped his arm around her.
It was a bit awkward, but Eddie and Nancy had sandwiched Steve into a tight hug.
"Okay, if you guys are going to have a threesome can you guys at least wait until we leave?" Robin asked.
"I'm down for it if they are," Eddie said, wiggling his eyebrows.
"Can you at least let the closure set in first?" Nancy laughed.
"Yeah, sure," Eddie said and paused. "Has it sunk in yet?"
"Why am I with you?" Steve laughed.
"Maybe because you're sexually attracted to nerds with big hair and doe eyes," Robin quipped.
"Gasp!" Eddie exclaimed. "You have a type."
"Honestly, I didn't even notice that until now," Steve said. "You should know, though, that once I realized that I was in love with you, any romantic feelings for her were officially gone. You're it for me, Eddie."
Eddie pressed a hard kiss to his lips.
"Wait, does that mean you have sexual feelings for her?" Eddie asked.
"You know, maybe when I get done with my first semester at college, we can celebrate," Nancy said, wiggling her eyebrows.
"Steve, mark your calendar!" Eddie said, slapping his chest.
"Hey, horn dogs! You're blocking the fridge!" Robin exclaimed and opened it once they moved. "What the hell did I come in here for?"

I think that the complaints about Vickie are less "she is too similar to Robin" (bc girl literally had half a scene of screentime. we have no idea who she is.) and more "once again there are only two (2) explicitly queers in the show (I will always be a Will should've come out to Jonathan truther) so of course they will be forced together".
She was only barely introduced. It feels a lot like the only reason she exists is so Robin can be with someone. The Duffers already have problems dealing with their current (pretty big) cast, it does not bode well for Vickie's characterisation tbh (I'm sorry, I love him as much as the next person. But Argyle's one (1) personality trait is literally. Weed. So it doesn't seem improbable that Vickie's one (1) personality trait would be becoming Robin's girlfriend. Which would suck for obvious reasons. Also, like. They are already infamous for their treatment of queer(-coded) characters)
It would also take away from stobin time, which is an already established dynamic everyone (if you don't you are simply factually incorrect sorry not sorry) loves. The cast is huge, the Duffers will have to pick and choose who they want to focus on, and it seems way more probable that those will be the established mcs (Will & El especially) and not Robin's side-character love interest. I mean, it would honestly be bad storytelling if they did that in the last season.
Especially since the straight romances are so good. Lumax? Absolute banger. The early Stancy development? So good. Jancy? Pretty sure there's a poll out there about how they are one of the most well-liked couples. Mileven? Multiple seasons establishing groundwork before they even get together. To have Vickie not even be a character before she is thrown into a relationship with the only lesbian feels a bit like a slap in the face. Like, at least Steve had a bunch of character development after the breakup but that can't happen with Vickie because it's the last season and they really have other stuff to worry about 😪 Like, idk, at least everyone else had a choice, which is part of what makes those romances so impactful (lumax, jancy, etc etc), while Robin - on the count of being a lesbian and Vickie being the only other sapphic character - really.....doesn't.
(Plus maybe it's the aro in me speaking, but I found it kinda cool to have a canonically queer character whose story arc is not completely focused on romance for once)
I also think this part of the reason why ronance got so big. Nancy already *is* her own person. Nobody can look at Nancy and say "her only personality is being queer" or "she's only here so Robin doesn't end up alone because we obviously need to pair everyone off somehow". A relationship between them would be another facette of their development, not the one thing that defines them. (Like. Her being bi is literally the only reason Vickie is even in the season. Sorry not sorry.)
But I mean. The season isn't out. We barely saw the two interact. My expectations are already below ground level. Maybe they will surprise me.

My aro ace Damian headcanon is that when he saw a couple he thought that’s what was normal and what he needed to do so when anyone gave him any compliments he thought “oh they are nice i will date them!”He didn’t actually like them but he thought that’s what you do so he went along with it then after awhile of being with them he would realize he just didn’t care he didn’t feel anything and felt broken it would take him awhile to figure out why this is based off my experience a bit so it’s kinda personal hope you like!
