Minotaur I/II rockets peel themselves like bananas during launch and if that ain't the most whimsical shit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the reason they do this is because the first stage is based on the Minuteman missile, which was designed to launch from a climate controlled missile silo. when your launch pad is out in the open in the hot, humid Virginia air, the rocket can actually get damaged by heat and condensation.
the people developing it into an orbital launch vehicle wanted to change as little as possible from the original missile to lower production costs, so instead of changing the structure of the booster or whatever, they just wrapped it in an insulating blanket. to save weight, the blanket gets peeled off by cables during launch. it's actually quite a clever solution!
they did not have to make that shit banana yellow though that ones definitely on purpose. looney tunes ass rocket.

let me talk about SpaceX and rockets for a second
because while I don't give a flying fuck about musk
yesterday's (20/04/2023) launch was a succes. The point was to get it in the air, anything more was extra. It was a test flight. Every rocket goes through this process.
SpaceX is not bad at making rockets, there are a lot of very skilled scientists involved and rockets are constantly being reused etc. technology has been rapidly improving this field.
This is new technology and it is being tested. As I have said before, this happens and has happened for every rocket. With NASA, with Rocketlab with SpaceX, any company you can think of.
The scientists now have a lot of data they can use to improve the rocket where things went wrong.
This was a test flight, nothing was on board, this is a testing phase and this is new development. This was the first time that the full stack was tested in flight. I am speaking for the scientists here because they are the actual key to this. They've (scientists in this field in general) made some incredible forward steps in the last years.
It's probable that the explosion was planned to some extent and likely that it was absolutely expected to happen.
Yes you can laugh at the explosion, yes it looks hilarious I can appreciate the memes a lot please continue.
But do realise that this did not go wrong and this is a positive for the scientists that work on it.

What doesn't kill you makes you think you're on to something
(inspired by a comment on another post)
Humans have this... almost non-existent appreciation for preventative caution. Sure, their safety measures are the most robust and redundant we have ever encountered - it would be near impossible for a Human space ship to sustain any kind of critical failure outside of combat.
If Humans weren't the ones using it that is.
Going through their public archives, we learned of a thing called Project Orion.
youtube
What the fuck, we asked.
"Well, it sorta worked. But then we figured that's a lot of wasted energy, so we put those inside and directed them backwards in a continuous manner, but generally went with conventional rocket propulsion. That worked out beautifully. Modern grav engines and kinetic pulse drives are much better, yes, but there's something about a good chemical burn that's just... romantic, in a way."
You!!! WHAT!?! You call this devastation "romantic"???
youtube
"Oh that's a good one, yea. The Apollo program was super cool. I read you could feel the thump of the Saturn engines blasting off from miles away. You get a similar feeling from a rail cannon going off, but that lacks that primal beauty of the flames. Though it does have that hefty kick, a real oomph through your bones, plus if it hits anything, you get a real pretty trail of sparkling particles shooting off. Like a miniature galaxy drifting away before your eyes..."
People died in all these programs! Some ships exploded!! We contested.
"It's always a shame, but, well, how else are you supposed to make progress? Can't know what needs fixing until it goes wrong. And most failures did not kill anyone, so we knew we were on the right track with those. Sometimes all that keeps you from the stars is a lack of extra armor plating."
