January 15th: Salem, Massachusetts
We drove into Salem for the day. We found the Salem witch trails memorial, but unfortunately, entry into the tombs stones were closed because of MLK day, but we were still able to see everything. The thought of being accused and executed for something that wasn't true is terrifying and sad. I'm glad they made a memorial to honor these souls.
We walked a bit and found the Peabody Essex Museum. Admission into the museum was free today because of the holiday. We saw paintings and sculptures. Interesting and beautiful things.
After that, we found a restaurant named Village Tavern to stop and refuel ourselves (I was getting hangry). I had a delicious hamburger and fries.
After lunch, we continued to walk down to find the Hocus Pocus house, and we found it a little ways down. It was awesome to see it in person! The house is called the Ropes Mansion.
After this, we drove to Rockport from Salem. Rockport is a seaside town in Massachusetts. Gorgeous and beautiful town. At this point it was very cold so we just stayed in this town for a bit and headed back into Cambridge to retire for the night.
We ordered in some arepas for dinner, and I packed a bit to get ready for our flight back home tomorrow.
That's the sad part about traveling. It ends too quickly! Tomorrow, we fly back home to San Diego in the evening. I am looking forward to seeing my little dog Mickey.
We plan to walk around Harvard Square tomorrow before we leave to the airport.
Until then!

Hallmark Hate Club
Hey, hey you? Every considered what might happen if you lived in one of the small towns where every Christmas comes with endless big city professionals in search of romance? Ever thought about how you might feel if your friends were picked off one by one? Wanna read a silly festive fic about just that?
Look no further! Find Hallmark Hate Club here.
Need more convincing? Read chapter one below:
At its peak, the Hallmark Hate Club had thrived. Seven years in though? Membership was thin on the ground.
It was easy to set up back then, December in Rockport was characterised by the inability to move without stumbling into busy professionals from Neverwinter looking for lumberjacks and bakers to save them from burnout. It was understanding that people were peeved to find the streets littered with big city adults with big city jobs who didn’t understand small town charm. Taako, and Lup hated it. Passionately. Magnus and Sloane used to hate it too… December was already busy, what with trying to get last minute orders together; baking endless sugar cookies; brewing endless cups of cocoa for cold nosed ice skaters who were giggly and love drunk; and definitely absolutely positively not laundering any money. It sucked, it sucked hard.
Taako and Lup were the founding members, Magnus joined soon after, and Sloane was a shoo in when she explained to Taako that she’d need to set up a regular cookie order with him because of the amount of lawyers who had suddenly started hanging around her cocoa stand (which definitely wasn’t a front for anything illegal, she just didn’t want a load of lawyers in her hair all the time - that was perfectly reasonable) relentlessly ordering things.
They’d had fifteen in their heyday and it was great, they supported each other whenever someone from the business factory skidded adorkably on their floors, or when they had to refuse to take anyone from out of town anywhere near an ice rink. It worked too. They watched horror movies and ate anti-romance snacks (Taako developed a whole menu), and bitched about how gullible everyone else was. And then it happened.
Or, more specifically, Julia happened.
They didn’t notice at first, they never did. That was a pattern. He mentioned someone he’d met at work, someone who’d come to his ancestral christmas tree farm who wasn’t like the other city slickers. She was interested in wood composition because of her research, she had career aspirations and loved her job and wasn’t stressed at all. They thought he was safe. He wasn’t. Magnus mentioned that it was refreshing to have someone come through town who wasn’t aggressively looking for romance. She’d told him that she didn’t buy into all that nonsense. They’d all found it refreshing too. Until it wasn’t. Until he started missing Hate Club nights. Until he told them she was different in a new way, in a lovesick way, in exactly the way they were all used to hearing from the people who got got. And sure, Julia had moved here but kept her job, she went back on research projects but largely worked from home. And sure, Taako liked her, thought she was great in fact. But none of that changed anything. None of that altered the fact that Magnus betrayed them.
Sloane went last year.
Lup said she didn’t blame her, that it could happen to anyone, but Taako wasn’t convinced. He’d seen the beginnings of it. She could have avoided it. Sloane handed over a cocoa to one of the many interchangeable lawyers circling her stand, he turned too fast - enraptured by the sound of jingle bells on one of the sleigh rides shooting about town and making the roads dangerous (no one knew where the fuck the things came from. He’d brought it up at town meetings and there were no permits, no permissions, and no one recognised the drivers, but the ‘Garfield’s showed up every year to clog up the roads and leave horse shit everywhere.) The cocoa spilled all over Hurley. A complete stranger. Someone Sloane had absolutely no need to concern herself with. Instead, she offered her a towel. That was it.
Taako thought it was done once Hurley mentioned that she was chief of police in Goldcliff. Double done once she started talking about feeling burnt out. Taako tried valiantly to derail things while he finished delivering and racking the cookies for Sloane each day and she ignored him. Just like Magnus had ignored him. Sloane started to just be around less, and less, and less again, until they realised that she hadn’t come to a meeting in six weeks. Then they knew. They got married in Spring. Taako made the cake. It had ten layers. It was fucking delicious.
And now, so what if there were only three of them left? So what if Johnann hadn’t been to a meeting in weeks? It probably didn’t mean anything. It didn’t mean he’d been got.
Lup sighs heavily and leans against him. "It got Johann." She turns her phone to Taako.
“Wait, what? Avi’s famous? Avi’s famous famous??? Fuck. How did we not notice?”
“It says here that he specifically didn’t tell anyone because he wanted to stay “low key” while he was in town.” Lup points to the line in the article.
Taako’s wants desperately to bite something. Hard. “Uh huh.”
“But then he saw Johann playing at the coffee shop open mic.”
“Of course he did.”
“And now they’re married and living in his penthouse apartment and Johann’s got a sell out world tour booked in.”
“It’s only been two weeks!”
Lup shrugs. “You know how it goes.”
“He didn’t even invite us to the wedding!”
“It says here they kept it small.” Lup points to the caption underneath a photo of Johann and Avi on a beach looking disgustingly happy.
“Sometimes I think this place is cursed.”
“I think they enjoy it, Taako. They seem happy.”
“Well Taako certainly doesn’t, and neither do you, right?”
“Right.” Says Lup. “It’s gross.”
Taako puts his serious face on. “This year we need to be extra careful, LuLu. We’re the only ones left.”
“Of course, we’ll be on top of it. We know the signs. No one’s coming for the Tacco twins.”
“Hey now, that’s not fair, Taako’s excellent with his ha…”
“No! Gross! Bad! You will not finish that sentence.” Lup nudges Taako hard with her elbow.
Taako snorts out a laugh and shoves her sideways. “Not getting got pact?” He offers out a crooked little finger for the traditional deal.
“Not getting got.” Lup sits up and hooks her finger round his.
“One! Two! Three! No romance!"

TAZ NC, Day 19: Super AU
@taznovembercelebration
Goldcliff was a beautiful city, but honestly, anything was better than Rockport at this point. The buildings here towered high, high above, shimmering in the soft, steady sunlight from a sky that never seemed to have clouds. The city was lush with plants of all kinds, green trees lining roads and paths, vines climbing up older buildings. The crowd was thick, but not too hard to get through, given the right circumstances.
Did Taako feel bad for the woman he shoved to the ground? No. Not really. But he was starting to get stressed by the trio of robots following behind him. Taako sprinted through Goldcliff Park, dodging a robot arm that nearly grabbed the back of his cartridge. He hopped up onto a park bench to avoid another arm and the bench wobbled beneath him.
Look— Maybe Goldcliff hadn't been his best plan, but Taako wasn't really— Taako didn't really think about it at that point. He just thought, hey, wouldn't it be nice to get away from the town where you accidentally killed a ton of people. Taako was a city guy. Or, well, he had lived in a city before. He knew how to blend in, how to keep his guard up and keep his eyes down. Plus, the more faces around, the less likely it was for him to get caught for, y'know, the Murders.
Apparently not. Taako had been walking home from day three of his brand new job (and new identity and new accent and new—) when the first robot had appeared. They were big, beefy things, with heavy arms. Seeing them around wasn't too concerning— Goldcliff law enforcement very much seemed to be automated, and then double-checked. He had thought, hey! As long he didn't look the thing in the eye… holes… then he'd be fine. But, uh, apparently they were a lot more intelligent than Taako had originally thought. Sue him, it had been years since he was last plugged in on tech advancements. How was he supposed to know that the robot police automatically would know he did some Murders?
Taako slid off the path, heading into the trees surrounding the park. It was just city on the other side— if he could make it through fast enough, he could blend back in. He'd get a new name, new ID, move to a new city, or maybe like, just live in the woods for a while. Yeah, living in the woods would be— aw fuck.
Taako misstepped and a root tree poking out from the ground tripped him. He skidded to a bad stop, stumbling to the ground. There was an awful stabbing pain in his ankle. Taako had been around the block enough to know a sprained joint when he felt one. He backed up, grabbing the nearest thing to him— a small stone, because, again, he was in the middle of a park— and forced his power into it. In the seconds it took for the robots to catch up with him, he was holding a small stone knife. He was pushin' his luck, because surely these 'bots are stone-proof, but he had to try something.
If he ended up in jail, who was going to find Lup??
The biggest robot closed in on him and Taako raised the knife, ready to strike. But then the robot let out a little hiss of steam. It cocked its head to the side, and then to the other side, and its body seemed to relax. A latch on the robot's stomach unhooked and there was another hiss as the robot parted from the middle out, revealing a person inside. What kind of fucked up vore situation had Taako gotten himself into? He had been ninety percent sure that those 'bots were just wires inside.
The woman stepped out, her heeled boot flattening the root Taako had tripped over. She had on a dark blue jumpsuit, with an angled symbol on the front. She wore a black, hooded, low-cut jacket over it. The hood was pulled up, staticing her face out. Her sleeves were pushed up to her elbows. It took Taako a second to place her identity.
The Bureau of Balance was one of Goldcliff's main attractions. Supers weren't rare, per se, but often, powers didn't amount to much. The Bureau sought to harness those powers, whatever they may be, and use them for good. Taako didn't know the intricacies, but he knew the stories. Even with the popularity of the Bureau, most of the identities of their most famous Supers were kept hidden.
A Super by the name of Void ran the Bureau of Balance. She was said to be strict, but kind. She had never been seen publicly without it. The other two robots were closed in around her and Taako felt a little stupid to only just now realize the robots lacked the Goldcliff Militia logo. The air hummed with power for a few moments and a translucent barrier went up around them.
Another thing about the Void: As much as they tried to stop her, the Militia could never get her to go by their rules. There were countless Bureau employees out on bail, or worse. Not only was the Bureau a training center for Supers, it was also a law office. They were partnered with Lucretia Williams, who seemed to be about the only lawyer who could win cases for Super clients.
"Taako," the Void said, holding out a hand to help him get up. "It's about time you've stopped running."

A Texas man was mauled to death by a pack of dogs on Tuesday, authorities said, three days after the state's governor vetoed a bill that would have enacted harsher penalties for those who own vicious canines.
The attack occurred around 5 a.m. Tuesday in Rockport, a city on the southern coast of Texas. Deputies with the Aransas County Sheriff's Office responded to a residential area after receiving a report that a man was screaming for help, according to a media release from the agency.

Rockport has 100% gotta be the best setting in the NFS franchise. like I love Carbon and the Underground games but both are very much like. "oh the setting is LA But Not." meanwhile Most Wanted has a city center that looks like Pittsburgh and the area surrounding it is like. rural coastal towns and a whole ass university campus!

may have covered this but what do the naval forces look like in Redux? I've always thought that kingdoms should at least have one large port city if only by virtue of the fact that the GRIMM should make resource/tech sharing necessary to survive, to an extent. correspondingly, I think they'd have quite large navy's, possibly even selling escort services to less developed nations in the case of Atlas?
I kind of did/kind of didn’t cover naval forces when I talked about the world military here. You’re right; since virtually all of the kingdoms have cities near water, it would make sense for them to have navies (or at least something analogous). Not just for handling aquatic Grimm, but for other important functions: enforcing water traffic laws, search and rescue, dealing with pirates, helping owners recover flotsam/lagan (goods lost in wrecks), enforcing environmental laws, and so on. In a world where access to water is considered a must—not just for trade and travel, but for natural geographic defenses—it’s mind boggling that the actual show never once touches upon it. (Not unless you’re counting Argus’ hard-light barrier and piloted mechs, which seem to be the exception, not the rule.)
However, since no country in the Redux has its own standing army (and by extension, navy), maritime forces are handled a little differently. Technically, there is one official navy in the Redux, which is considered a division of the world military (the equivalent of the Atlesian military from the canon). It very seldom gets mobilized unless the World Council unanimously votes to do so (the circumstances under which that happens being extremely rare).
The world military (naval division included) is reserved for two things:
Intervening in conflicts too large or aggressive to be handled domestically;
Eliminating sudden, massive surges in Grimm that can’t be subdued by Huntsmen.
Outside of those scenarios, coasts and waterways are primarily overseen by either local law enforcement or Huntsmen. As for which group gets involved (and when), it’s a matter of bureaucracy.
The general rule is that all bodies of water within the borders of a city are under the jurisdiction of law enforcement. Anything outside of cities is considered the responsibility of Huntsmen stationed at outposts. There is some overlap between the two, which also happens to be a point of contention for both groups (which I’ll get into another time).
The cities with coastal/river access (and therefore water police) are as follows:
VALE: City of Vale, Patch, the Gossic cities (Eldegoss, Sindegoss, Tordegoss), Avonford, Vellichor, Petrichor
MISTRAL: Talus, Sirocco, Akylon, Etesia, Akepont, Higanbana, Shion, Rabenda, Skiron, Argus
ATLAS: Evadne, Chequer
VACUO: The Eyrie, Seaglass, Rockport, Kenyte, Feldspar, the Yrrose cities
MENAGERIE: Dun Obel, Dun Ashai, Dun Paror, Rorqual, Thalassion
Of the 17 outposts, the following 8 are equipped for handling water:
Belpont Station, Düahþ, Fort Iosefka, Fort Kittiwake, Keep of the Broken Spear, Keep of the Tattered Cloak, Northmarch, Oxebay Island
TL;DR - Responsibilities traditionally held by naval forces are instead divvied up between Huntsmen and law enforcement, depending on the location. Remnant's only "true" navy is a division of the world military, and it almost never gets deployed.

Rockport as a setting is just so interesting to me, and I don't know why. It's not because it feels lived-in because it's the map to an open-world racing game. Of course, it isn't. Streets are just a little too wide. Even for a major American city, all of the alleyways and shifty side streets are wide enough to fit a super wide sportscar. But there's something about the vibe of Rockport that's Pacific Northwestern as fuck, in a way that no other PNW-inspired Need for Speed locale hasn't ever been able to replicate. And there have been at least three others. Seacrest County and, to a lesser extent, Redview County from Hot Pursuit (2010) and Rivals, respectively, as well as the city of Fairhaven from Most Wanted (2012). Maybe it's because I'm an Oregonian from Portland, but the vibe of Rockport just speaks to me. It's a city plagued by endemic corruption, economic decline, and a militarized police force. It gets the broad strokes of Portland's situation right, both at the time of release and as of me writing this, and it feels like, to me at least, that just offscreen, there's a homeless camp that's just been shut down by the city, a peaceful protest being broken up by RPD pigs, and this city's sleazebag shithead of a mayor is gonna win reelection because even though things have gotten bad, they're still better than a Republican. I don't know where I'm going with this anymore, it's like 11:30 my time and I'm feeling a little eepy from taking my sertraline, but what I'm trying to say with this wall of text is that Rockport as a setting is Portland as fuck, and by extension Northwestern as fuck. All to serve as set dressing for a cheesy funny-bad revenge plot serving as motivation for racing that sucks because everyone else cheats, and cop chases that fuck because the music and vocal performances in that one specific area are really good.

Hudson: Uh. My name is Hudson. I am the engineer of this train. Welcome aboard. We‘re happy to have you. We know that you have lots of choices to pick from for subterranean inter-city travel here, but uh—and we sure do appreciate the fact that you picked us.
Magnus: Well, we tried to get on the Rockport Unlimited, but it was full.
Hudson: That train is a little too extreme for most people. It doesn‘t even go on rails. It just sort of—they just sort of off-road it.
Magnus: Well, where doesn‘t it go?
Hudson: Uh, well, it doesn‘t get to its destination, usually. It usually crashes and it‘s pretty terrible.

Crossing the Atlantic
Anne Sexton
We sail out of season into an oyster-gray wind,
over a terrible hardness.
Where Dickens crossed with mal de mer
in twenty weeks or twenty days
I cross toward him in five.
Wrapped in robes—
not like Caesar but like liver with bacon—
I rest on the stern
burning my mouth with a wind-hot ash,
watching my ship
bypass the swells
as easily as an old woman reads a palm.
I think, as I look North, that a field of mules
lay down to die.
The ship is 27 hours out.
I have entered her.
She might be a whale,
sleeping 2000 and ship’s company,
the last 40¢ martini
and steel staterooms where night goes on forever.
Being inside them is, I think,
the way one would dig into a planet
and forget the word light.
I have walked cities,
miles of mole alleys with carpets.
Inside I have been ten girls who speak French.
They languish everywhere like bedsheets.
Oh my Atlantic of the cracked shores,
those blemished gates of Rockport and Boothbay,
those harbor smells like the innards of animals!
Old childish Queen, where did you go,
you bayer at wharfs and Victorian houses?
I have read each page of my mother’s voyage.
I have read each page of her mother’s voyage.
I have learned their words as they learned Dickens’.
I have swallowed these words like bullets.
But I have forgotten the last guest—terror.
Unlike them, I cannot toss in the cabin
as in childbirth.
Now always leaving me in the West
is the wake,
a ragged bridal veil, unexplained,
seductive, always rushing down the stairs,
never detained, never enough.
The ship goes on
as though nothing else were happening.
Generation after generation,
I go her way.
She will run East, knot by knot, over an old bloodstream,
stripping it clear,
each hour ripping it, pounding, pounding,
forcing through as through a virgin.
Oh she is so quick!
This dead street never stops!

Hallmark Hate Club Part 1/2- Chapters 1-6
Tumblr media
Hey - hey you! Wanna read the first 6 chapters of Hallmark Hate Club? Well great news, you can! The rest will be up tomorrow and boxing day.
Find them on A03, read Chapter 1 below:
