📓
In true fandom tradition I have rotated around the concept of a gender-flipped cast so many times. Like a normal amount of times. Specifically the players.
Some of it’s the same!-
Jan Maas is still very dry and dutch. Let’s just get that out of the way first.
Isaac is still built like a Rodan and cleats but it is definitely more of a struggle. Aside from having just the biggest tits on the team, there is nothing ‘feminine’ about her. She’s the captain and she’s tough and she looks rough around the edges but. There’s more to her than just that. You know?
Colin is just straight up named Colleen and has the same fucking hair cut and has had the same fucking hair cut since she was fourteen and she’s been out since the youth league because look at her. Look at her. This is the women’s league. She got outed a long time ago. She was never fooling anyone.
Some of it is the same but tilted-
Moe Bumbercatch is still small and feral and anti-capitalist but also aggressively nonbinary.
Dani’s leave in the first season was pregnancy related. Fútbol is life! She also gave life! It’s not a big deal (people try to tell her otherwise)
Some of it is different but kind of nice-
Sam’s dad was worried about her going off to England by herself so he came with her. They own a restaurant together. He packs her lunch. He has always been aggressively supportive of his daughter’s dreams and throws family dinners for her and her friends. He worries sometimes that his presence is overbearing. It is, but it’s a fixable amount. The longer Sam is at Richmond, the more she learns to set her own boundaries while appreciating how lucky she is.
And some of it is the same but better but worse but awful-
Jamie’s dad went to prison when she was sixteen. She’s been getting papped since she was barely legal. She’s Football Barbie and she’s been getting yelled at by angry men in locker rooms for most of her life. She has issues and no filter and too much talent. She is also the most likely to babysit for Dani, because she has a soft spot about single mums supporting their kids and never felt comfortable that she coming to Richmond might be the reason Dani could lose her job. She also gave Sam shit when she first joined, but then refused to leave Sam alone in a room with Rupert Mannion. She’s jealous of Isaac’s tits. She thinks it’s hilarious that all of Colleen’s girlfriends see her eyebrow slit and go weak in the knees. Personality-wise, she’s the Dutch-est Englishwoman Jan Maas has ever met. She’s planning to break contract and flee the country the second her dad gets out of prison. She hasn’t told anyone. She’s never even mentioned that she’s the one to blame for him being there in the first place.
Bonus non-player mention
Nate once let her parents set her up in an arranged marriage. She is picky, but she should’ve been pickier. She is divorced now. She’s barely spoken to her parents since. She’s not even the kitman here. She works in accounts in the AFC Richmond finance department. She’s never been so close yet so far from her dream.
OTHER Bonus non-player mention
Kyle Jones is a 5’3 flagrantly sparkly pixie-faced bisexual man who is best known for a series of silly, tongue-in-cheek deodorant commercials where he road on a horse. He has been fighting to be respected ever since. He is colloquially know as the Sexy Lynx Man.

My hometown did something good for once.
*I’m going to cut and paste the entire thing here as to avoid being stuck in a paywall for future readers.
By Theresa Vargas
‘We did it! Mothra is up on the wall!’ Because of a boy, Washington has a new monster in its midst
The nation’s capital has a new monster.
No, it’s not that kind of monster. This one was not born of politics or injustice. It does not feed on fear or breed division.
This monster has wings and large round eyes and exists because a 4-year-old boy asked nicely and then made a compelling case for it.
This monster is Mothra, and how her image came to land at the top of a mural on the side of a restaurant in Shaw offers a lesson in persistence and the power of advocacy when done right.
Many children fear monsters. Konrad Anderson, who will turn 5 in July, might have developed a love for them before he was born.
He was still in his mother’s womb when she and his father watched “Godzilla” in a theater. The couple ended up using a photo snapped of them after that movie as their pregnancy announcement. Then after Konrad was born and started to talk, his first word was “smok,” which is “dragon” in Polish, his maternal grandparents’ native language.
You can imagine, then, Konrad’s excitement when he noticed a mural of monsters going up on the side of Zeppelin, a restaurant he passes on his way to and from school.
He watched as a two-story-tall Godzilla took form and wanted to know more about the creature, said his mother, Maggie Koziol. As 4-year-olds tend to do, he asked questions and then more questions. Soon his parents found themselves going to the library to check out books and including the monster’s adventures in his bedtime stories.
Konrad also took his questions directly to the artist, Patrick Owens. He asked him about his plans for the wall, and they talked about their favorite monsters. Koziol recalled one particular conversation. The mural had grown to include King Kong, an octopus and two zeppelins, which is a type of airship, but Konrad felt it was missing something crucial.
“What about Mothra?” his mother recalled him asking Owens that day, and then again each time he saw him after that. “If Patrick was outside, Konrad would stop and say, ‘Excuse me, excuse me, but where’s Mothra?”
He even pointed out a spot above Godzilla’s tail that would be perfect for the winged creature.
“There is all this space over here and you could put her right there,” he said.
Owens said at the time he was actually considering how to fill that spot on the wall and was leaning toward painting planes. He said Mothra had been included in an original mock-up of the mural but had been cut from the final plans.
Plans can change, though, and they did, after Konrad took one more step.
Before school one day, he asked his mom to pull up an image of Mothra on her computer. He then sat down to draw a picture of the creature. Maybe the artist just needed to see what Mothra looked like, he told her.
“You think your kid will move on,” Koziol said. “Konrad doesn’t move on. Konrad perseveres in a way that is amazing.”
After capturing the creature’s likeness, down to her large blue eyes and her orange-dotted wings, he wrote: “Mothra” at the top. He also scribbled, “To the artist from Konrad.”
He then asked his mom to pick him up from school that day, so she could help him give it to Owens. That afternoon, Owens wasn’t there, so they left it with a manager. Owens said that when he and the restaurant’s owners learned about the picture, they decided that was it. They agreed then, he said, “we have to do Mothra right now.”
Owens said he didn’t tell the family anything and decided instead to start working on the image early one morning and have most of it done to surprise Konrad as he walked home from school. A video of that moment shows Konrad and a friend catching their first glimpse of the wall.
“Mothra!” Konrad yells, throwing his arms in the air. “That’s awesome.”
“That’s up there,” Owens tell him in the video, “because you requested it.”
Koziol said that recognition was “so meaningful” to her son.
“When I came home, he called his grandma and said, ‘I did it! We did it! Mothra is up on the wall!’” she said. “I can’t believe he’s 4½ , and he’s fighting for something he thinks is the right thing to fight for and he’s convincing people.”
Owens, who is a father of a 13-year-old, said he wanted Konrad to know that he had asked in the correct way. He said people often offer suggestions, saying he should do this or he should do that, but Konrad did his research.
“I just wanted him to know it was truly through persistence, the right type of persistence,” Owens said. “He was polite about it. He gave me an example of what he would like to see. He wasn’t insistent on it.”
Afterward, Koziol publicly thanked Owens and the restaurant in a post that was published on PoPville. She wrote, “I want to give a shout out to the owner and the amazing artist Patrick Owens — they made this little boy’s monster dreams come true.”
Koziol said she has since heard from other parents and neighbors who, like her, see more than monsters in that mural now.
“I never thought I’d think of Mothra as all that is good in the world,” she said.
Owens said he’s not sure yet if he’s done with the mural. He still sees some open spaces on the wall and might add a few more monsters.
Konrad has noticed those empty spots, too.
On the way to school one morning this week, he turned to his mom and mentioned how there might be just enough space to fit a tiny version of Rodan, a giant Pteranodon that also appears in the Godzilla films.

(Film three. After “pirates medley”. The hook sisters have just run into an alleyway near the marketplace)
Harriet: ya shouldna done kiddo
Cj: why not.
Harriet: because it wasn’t a good move
Cj: you might like men drooling all over you but I hate it.
Harriet: you agreed to it.
Cj: I didn’t think they’d try that. So I’d apprecrie you dispensing with the victim blaming if you please.
Harriet: yeah yeah whatever. Lookee o’er there
Cj: aw FUCK!
(They’ve just spotted chadeficent and Ursula some ways away)
Harriet: SEA WITCH!
Ursula: oh god. (Fake smile) Harriet! To what do I owe the
(Cj shoots her in the stomach with a blunderbuss)
The sisters: where is he.
(Ursula straightens up and the bullet flies out of her stomach hitting some poor sap in the head)
Chadeficent: that was Balthazar yes?
The other three: who the hell cares?
Harriet: where is my brother?
Ursula: hmmmmm. Dunno don’t care. That work for you?
(Harriet lunges are the sea witch but Cj holds her back. While this is happening Hadie poofs back in slightly singed and very pissed off)
Hadie: for the record Rodan. I don’t appreciate being sent to Dark Mountain. Chernabog may be insultingly attractive but he’s far too fatherly for my tastes.
Cj: shove off spawn. There’s more important matters at hand
(Hadie chuckles sinisterly. Then force chokes the sisters)
Hadie: oh look at that. Fragile necks and bravado are such an inexplicable combination. And as you will see very soon. Deadly
Harriet: he.. he he mi...dea.
Cj: he...gone
Hadie: what? What’re you talking about?
Chadeficent: oh I think you know
(Hadie’s eyes glow bright grey. He drops the sisters, takes out a silver knife and throws it at Ursula. It slashes her cheek)
Hadie: ever heard of phlegathon tempered steel? It cuts you. Then heals you. But keeps you in burning unbearable pain. Until such time the wielder chooses to release you from it.
(Ursula’s cheek is starting to burn. Steam is curling from the edges of the cut)
Ursula: I was exiled from Atlantica. Whatever petty wound you deal me is of no consequence.
Hadie: yeah but (he sighs) cut you enough and it burns away your very being. So. What’ll it be bitch?
(Ursula growls in irritation and disappears in a torrent of water)
Hadie: now that that’s over oh cripes they’re gone.
(Chadeficent and the girls have left the scene. At the Jolly Roger Hook is waiting on deck)
Hook: GIRLS! What the hell have you been doing. Dukes is dead. And the men say you killed him Cj. If you keep doing this you’ll never land a husband.
Cj: aye. And what of it father?
Harriet: oh god not now.
Cj: yes now. Our brother has been missing for a year now and may as well be dead and all he cares about is his disgusting heterosexual misogynistic bastards of a crew
Harriet (coughing): code red. Code red
Hook: what’re you saying Cj?
Cj: what d’you think I’m saying dad?
Hook: it sounds as though you’re thinking to much like your freak of a brother
Harriet: Harry was bisexual pops
Hook: like I said. A freak. Men are with women. Women are with men. It’s the law of the world. And I expect my children abide by that
Cj: yes and when they don’t you cast them out and they need to take refuge somewhere else. Say a restaurant run by a squid
Hook: if you have something to say then say it.
Cj: ok. I like girls. Always have. Always will. And you cannae change it or me
(Starkey hobbles outside with a tea set. Sees the family feud. Starts to make his way back inside)
Hook: STARKEY! Did you know about Cj’s affliction
Cj: oh here we go
Starkey (diplomatically): uhhhh. I believe that. She. Wanted
Cj: it’s ok uncle Starkey. I told him last year. Considering he was the one that raised me while you were brainswashing Harriet into being Captain Hook 2.0 and Harry was fuck knows were trying to get Tick Tock to chomp his hand off in a vain attempt to get your approval!!!!
Hook: in time this will pass and you’ll be just like your sister
Cj (scoffing): of course. Be like Harriet. The pretty one. The smart one. The obedient one.
Harriet (for once very sheepish): Ceej. Could ya please lemme outta this?
Cj: no. He’s always wanted me to be like you. But guess what. I’m never gonna be who you want me to be
(This is when “sit still look pretty” happens. After the song Cj storms off)
Hook: and do you have any oddities you’d like to share Harriet? Because if so nows the time
Harriet: yes. As a matter of fact I do. For the past seven years I’ve been in uh heh “cahoots” with Gaston junior.
Hook: like the freak and the pansy
Harriet: sort of. Except theirs was more emotional. Ours is. Purely on the physical side. And yes. I’m the boss.
(Hook goes puce)
Harriet: uncle Starkey. I’ll be back presently
(She runs after her sister)
Hook: take me back to my quarters Starkey
Starkey: of course sir.
(He wheels the captain back in side. Harriet catches up with Cj. She finds her in an alleyway surrounded by the felled bodies of ten dogs and one cat)
Harriet: what the hell did you do.
Cj: the one thing I ever got from him, that wasn’t a hand me down from you or Har, was this.
(She holds up a whistle)
Harriet: wow
Cj: yep. Turns out it’s a dog whistle. Which pretty succinctly explains how the bastards could hear it all the way across Neverland when Jane found the treasure
Harriet: and the morbidly obese demon on four legs?
Cj: Tremaine’s moggy
Harriet: right. What you did was incredibly brave you know.
Cj: I don’t like animals.
Harriet: I meant what happened at home just now
Cj: I know. Like I said. I don’t like animals.
(At the core fours old apartment chadeficent has just arrived. Only to see Jafar watching tv)
Chadeficent: hello worthless. Miss me?
Jafar: who...?
Chadeficent (Maleficent’s voice): this better?
Jafar (exasperated): you couldn’t have taken control of a pretty one?
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): fuck off you crypt keeper
(Jafar looks taken aback)
Chadeficent: bugs are to be worked out
Jafar: what is it?
Chadeficent: spawn of Cinderella
Jafar: you couldn’t have got the ash girl herself?
Chadeficent: too strong willed (Chad’s indignant voice) hey! (Maleficent’s voice) SILENCE! (Both voices) I am creating a cult. To destroy our children. Ursula is aboard. What say you?
(The next morning. At Evie’s palce)
Mal:...and Ben found them this morning passed out on the couch with like eight tubs of deluxe rocky road ice scattered at round.
Jay: deluxe?
Mal: chocolate marshmallow ice cream instead of chocolate ice cream
Jay (hopefully): Christmas list?
Mal (generating a tin with magic): why wait?
Jay: ooh yay!
Evie: AH! No. Not yet
Jay: awww. I’ve been here for an hour
Mal: let the man eat sis. It’s the least you can do since you are stabbing him with pins when you could just use 🎶🎶magic🎶. By the way. Your hair remarkably black today
Evie (snarling): get outta workshop
(Mal leaves cackling. She goes to the kitchen where Carlos is giving a plate the thousand yard stare)
Mal: hey kiddo. What’s up?
Carlos (softly with a lot of feeling): the cake...it’s gone. An entire macadamia nut chocolate sponge cake. Gone. How? There was enough for fifty people to have two slices each. And it’s all gone. How can it all be gone?
(The twins and Gil come racing pass the room screeching at the top of their lungs with food all around their mouths)
Mal (aside to Carlos): I think I know. (Normal volume). Gil! Could you bring the kids in here please?
(Gil troops back to the kitchen with the twins trailing behind. All three look terrified. Carlos and Mal lift the twins up onto the counter)
Mal (“mom” voice in full effect): now boys. Did you ask your papa to get the cake from the fridge?
Twins: uhhhh...
Mal: it’s ok. I’m not mad. I just wanna. If it was you then that’s ok. If it was Dude then we need to get him to a veterinarian.
Carlos: WHAT?!?!
Mal: oh shit. Sorry honey.
Carlos: listen to me you rotten little————(the twins look at him with the epitome of puppy eyed innocence) 🎶dad. Where are you. You’re good with this type of stuff🎶
Mal: paperwork
Carlos: fuck
Gil: it was us. Squeaky wanted a snack and I couldn’t find anything in the fridge but the cake. We only meant to share a corner but Celia oh crap
Mal: 🎶oh Celia🎶
(The girl melts out from the shadows clutching her stomach)
Mal: did you help Gil and the twins eat the entirety of Jane’s birthday cake?
Celia: if I says yes what would you do.
Mal: give you an antacid and advise you to take it easy with the party food.
Celia: then yes. I helped.
Mal: come on then.
(They head to the bathroom. But Mal’s phone starts ringing)
Mal: it’s Ben. Do you know how to get to the bathroom?
Celia: Dizzy sent me a schematic last night
Mal: good. That’s good. If evo finds out I will plead the fifth. You do know that don’t you?
Celia: wouldn’t expect anything less. See ya
(She runs off)
Mal (answering her cell phone): hello your majesty. Any idea on your eta or should I send your apologies to Jane?
Ben: I wish I was close to being done. But there are so many papers to get through and there’s no use in denying it. People are terrified at what ever killed the guards.
Mal: I could come and help you?
Ben: no. Definitely not. Go have fun. Do the routine.
Mal: but you’ll miss it. Though a private rendition for your eyes only could also be very interes-
Cogsworth: ahem hello my lady
Mal (trying not to laugh): sorry Carlton.
Cogsworth: that’s quite alright dear. I’ll just uh go ahem away
(He leaves and bal bursts into laughter)
Mal: oh that was oh god that
Ben: I I’m so sorry
Mal: don’t be. Just sorted a domestic so a I needed a laugh
(As they’re talking Mal’s walking outside)
Mal: what on the office menu today
Ben: chargrilled Damon foie gras and quinoa
Mal: what no pizza?
Ben: fraid not
Mal: I can always zap you some sausage rolls and mac and cheese cupcakes from the party
Ben: please and thank you?
Mal: and the new cake
Ben: Celia?
Mal: along with your brother and nephews. Carlos was not happy
Ben: of course.
Mal: hey, was chad supposed to meet us at Evie’s?
Ben: I don’t think so. Is he there?
Mal: yeah. Looking like the shalka Doctor.
Ben: oh.
Mal: I’ll go see what he wants
Ben: be careful. Love ya
Mal: always am. Love you too.
(She hangs up)
Mal: hey chad. Whatcha doing
(Chadeficent turns to look at her. Their eyes glow black. And Mal enacts the safety protocols on the house keeping everyone else inside and safe)
Mal: what did you do?
Chadeficent (Maleficent’s voice): oh it’s not chad. Hello my sweet
Mal (breathing heavily): Maleficent?
Chadeficent: mhmm. Now give me my sceptre
Mal: what did you do to him?
Chadeficent: he is simply a mindless hormone driven teenage boy
Mal: yeah, I know, he’s an dickhead. Nobody likes him. At all
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice, very, very hurt): they don’t?
Mal: yeah. You’re insufferable.
Chadeficent (Maleficent’s voice): ENOUGH! Give me the sceptre
Mal: you stole the wand didn’t you. And the staff and the mirror. So why do you need the sceptre.
Chadeficent: I want everything of importance (Chad’s voice) I wanna be king (Maleficent’s voice) I want my daughter back
Mal: I’m not your daughter. And chad you hate magic. Why would you use it to be king?
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): I uh I dunno (Maleficent’s voice) he was easily bought with a butter finger and empty promises I have absolutely no intention on fulfilling. Now. The sceptre.
Mal (mind working a mile a minute): h how, how about a story. And I can make you a cup of tea yeah? Or coffeee?
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): ooh beer (Maleficent’s voice) very well. But be quick about it
Mal: ok. Ok um
(She turns to the drinks table. This is when “she’s so gone” happens. After which Chadeficent picks her up from the splintered table by the neck)
Mal: why...are..you...doing...this?
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): you don’t deserve this. None of it. You belong on that slag heap. You deserve to rot. To be forgotten. I want you all dead. Don’t you see? You can’t be queen. It’s not right. Audrey should be queen. And I should be king
Mal: but...Ben
Chadeficent (still Chad’s voice): ALL OF YOU WILL DIE. YOU. THE MAGIC PEOPLE THE RUNT THE CHICKS THE TRAIOR THE FREAK OF A DWARF. ALL OF YOU. DEAD (Maleficent’s voice) as for me. I want to break you. For you to see how useless you truly are without me.
Mal (turning purple in the face now): get...bent
(Chadeficent drops her and pulls out the wand)
Chadeficent (Chad’s voice): there’s never been an ugly bitch who’s been queen. Looks are everything. Bibbidi bobbidi boo
(Mal is washed is black light which solidified into a black cloak. The houses doors are blasted off their hinges and jay stands there completely gold and absolutely buzzing with power. Chadeficent cackles as they disappear in black smoke. Jay and the others rush to Mal’s side)
Carlos: oh my god! Mom are you ok?
Mal (voice hoarse thin and cracked): yes ahem yes ye yeah. What the hells wrong with my voice
(Evie takes the hood off of Mal and cackles)
Evie: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! OH MY GOD! YOU LOOK LIKE
Jay (unimpressed with her behaviour): your mother. When she gave the apple to Doug’s aunt
(Evie stops cackling)
Carlos: what happened
Mal: Chad’s possessed by Maleficent. He wants to kill us all and be king
Carlos: and goat lady?
Mal: wants to break me
Evie: so what do we do
Celia: isn’t it obvious? Hades. Your father.
Evie: he is not
Celia: Mal was right and you know it. So stop pissing about and help me get your sister inside the house so she can get some proper clothes on cause an old lady in a minidress is not a good look. I should know. Cruella used to come to the arcade in the warm days. It’s was horrifying. Thank you Carlos for killing her last year by the way
Carlos: much obliged Ceels.
(Mal’s phone rings again. This time Carlos is the one to answer it)
Carlos: hi yes dad. Ok brace yourself. Chad has the wand. He’s possessed by Maleficent. He wants us all dead. Barricade yourself in your office. Emergency protocols. All that shizz. You have magic so you should be fine. We’re gonna stop them. It’s what we do. Us too (he ends the call) that’s dad sorted. Now how do we fix mom?
Celia: go to the island. Get the ember. Come back here. Kick him in the balls until he’s exorcised
Mal: Gil. You coming with us?
Gil: I would but. My boys
Doug: I’ll stay with them. I have my exosuit. I’ll keep them safe. I promise you I will
Gil: ok
Evie: oh my god!
Doug: our kid is fine. She’s with Lonnie and Jane. You know. A badass and a light fairy.
Evie: oh thank god
Jay: so we all know what we’re doing. Action time?
All the others: action time
Squirmy: AAAAAH
Gil (panicky): what? What is it? What’s wrong
Squirmy: I want to give the pretty lady my present
(He holds up a bouquet of periwinkle blue tulips. Everyone relaxes)
Gil: Jane will love them. But it could be a good idea to keep them here. Just until we’re all back together. Yeah?
Squirmy (unhappily): yeah
Doug: c’mon boys. You can help me bake a new cake.
The twins: YAAAAAAAAY
(They run back in. Evie goes up and embraces Doug)
Evie: we’ll be back soon as possible
Doug: take however long you need. I stabbed someon in the junk last year. I can defend myself
Evie: oh I know that. It’s just that
Doug: Evie sweetie. Look at me. I’ll be fine. I promise. And if I need to reach you there’s our phones the the psychic link you set up.
Evie (voice breaking): I...
Doug (understandingly): me too. Now let’s go
(They all run back into the house except for one)
Mal: uh. Guys
Jay: oh. Right
(He runs back and carries her to the house)
Mal: watch the hip. Watch the hip
Jay: yeah yeah yeah.
Celia: so do we get the the island. The limos?
Evie: no. They’re all the the school garages until next week.
Celia: then we’re screwed?
Mal: not entirely
Jaylos and Evie: THE BIKES
Celia: what?
Mal: how I left last year
(At the cliff site. The six of them are on their bikes. Celia’s hanging on to Gil)
Carlos: go on mom
Mal (voice still croaky): noble steed proud and fair/you shall take us anywhere
(They drive over the magic bridge to the island. Back in Auradon Chadeficent is making their way to Jane’s birthday party)
Chadeficent (Maleficent’s voice): are you sure this shall work? (Chad’s voice) it had better. They all deserve it for hating me

“Kaijû daisensô“ (1965) or Invasion of Astro-Monster
Literal translation: “War of the Monsters” and also called “Monster Zero” and it was occasionally advertised as “Invasion of the Astros” and then the movie starts and it says that the title is actually “Monster Zero” just to really confuse the audience.
As if the above title confusion wasn’t enough, there’s this little bon mot.
In Germany, this movie was released under the title «Befehl aus dem Dunkel» (“Order out of the Dark”), originally the title of a SciFi novel by German author Hans Dominik, published in 1933. Although the movie’s plot has nothing in common with this book (which prefigures the political effects of a mind reading device), it was even billed as “based on Hans Dominik” and the name of the author (who had died in 1945) was widely used in promotion.
For the complete list of variations of the title, head HERE.

New cover illustration by Benjamin Marra — — — —
The story here is one about the importance of ‘heart.’ ‘Soul’ seems too much, as this is all about space and religion is only briefly mentioned twice, and the use of ‘heart’ does harken back to Metropolis, where the mind and hands needs heart to be truly human. So, let’s say “heart,” rather than anything such as ‘emotion’ or ‘instinct.’
The main thesis, if you will, is that technology removes human nature — ‘heart’ — from life, or at least is antithetical to it. During the initial discussion of rocket mission details with the Global Space Agency, there’s a bunch of images of a teletype, an adding machine, and then the precision of the space ship’s location is calculated to three decimal places. The Xilians (natives of ‘Planet X,’ a newly discovered satellite of Jupiter, which makes it a moon, not a planet, but whatever) use numbers to name things: places are referred to as M3-X7, and they are terrorized by Monster Zero. Facts are fed into their computer, which then provides plans and procedures to go about completing tasks in every facet of life. Women all look the same (tropes of how ‘all Xilians look alike’ being beside the point) because apparently the most beautiful face is the only one to have. To disobey this computer is to be sentenced to die. When plans are changed, approval of the course of action is seen, not as an ‘improvement’ per se, but as a reduction of errors. Yet, this hidebound approach to things is their ultimate undoing, for a simple change in plans for us would for them necessitate a massive alteration in calculations, such is their reliance on logic. Life is all about flux, we are allegorically told, and to approach life without emotion is to be no longer truly alive.

Yoshio Tsuchiya [centre, gesturing] in Kaijû daisensô (1965) — — — —
There is a distinctly binary reaction to something that Godzilla does in this film, and it apparently reduces people to one or another camp: delighted and happy, or filled with the anger of a million red-hots suns going super nova. At the conclusion of a battle on Planet X, Godzilla does a little dance, which includes a pose that is still seen today throughout Japanese pop culture; I think even the video game character Mario does it. Imagine ‘dabs,’ but with decades of staying power. Here’s the cast of the film doing it in a promotional shot.
Tumblr media
I happen to like the shē (or ‘Sheeeh!’ or シェー if you prefer) dance. It’s one of the few times I’ll disagree with a director (Ishirô Honda was once heard to say in an interview “I didn’t invent Godzilla for this”). Godzilla, although a symbolic representation of nuclear war and its destructive power, had gained a personality in the last two films before this, and here we see it manifest itself in a way which is similar to the manner of a fractious and mischievous child. He isn’t supposed to be child-like, I’ll grant you; he’s supposed to be terrifying and scary, just like nuclear war and the destructive power thereof. However, this film very much represents the beginning of writing the stories so that they are more ‘family fare,’ so aiming the character more in a direction which is appropriate for the kiddies does mean he becomes more ‘cute’ and less ‘terror-inducing’ as a result. Things change and adapt to the times, and this is another example of it.
If you want to complain about something, how about the plot holes you could drive an 18-wheeler through sideways and think ‘damn, is this plot hole ever roomy!’
The first one renders the entire first hour a waste of the Xilian’s time. Here’s a super limited version.
An Earth rocket goes to investigate Planet X, and discovers the people living underground in fear of King Ghidorah. They have learned that Ghidorah was defeated recently, could they please have Rodan and Godzilla to drive him away? They offer Earth a cure for cancer in return. The rocket flies back to Earth to deliver the request, and the Xilians show up shortly thereafter to help with the transporting of the two kaijû back to Planet X. Once there, the pair defeat King Ghidorah and he flies away. The rocket returns with our astronauts to Earth, with the cure apparently recorded on tape. When the tape is played, it informs the Earth’s people that they are actually a colony of Planet X now, and they must all co-operate with the stripping of its water resources for the Xlians’ use, as water is precious to them. The invaders use the three monsters to help with this, as they now have them all under their mind controlling power.
Tumblr media
I’m 95% positive I had one of these as a kid. Mine was only about 6 inches across, though. — — — —
Why did they bother with all of the subterfuge? Why not just show-up on Earth, take control of Rodan and Godzilla, and then demand water in the first place? It took an entire bloody hour of unnecessary song and dance to get to the point that they could have done from the outset!
Obviously, the reason is simple: the first hour gives us the opportunity to see Godzilla and Rodan fight King Ghidorah in ¼ gravity on a foreign body. Also, SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE…
Another possible complaint: How about the lack of Mothra to defeat King Ghidorah? In the last film, Mothra was also required to defeat Ghidorah, and it was that trio of heroes that repelled the evil, golden, two-headed dragon. Where’s our favourite Queen of the Monsters, that heterocera, Titanus Mosura? THIS is something to bemoan, people.
Ghidorah really gets a chance to spread his wings here, though. His heads all bobble away, his wings flap, and we have a great opportunity to look at him moving around and crushing stuff. His scales are wonderful and seem entirely independent of each other, in the way chain mail is. This danger from without — space debris or warheads on nuclear missiles, perhaps? — is new and terrifying.
Godzilla here is almost too mobile: he has lost that reptilian quality and is moving more like a human would. I do not like this.
Nick Adams is the Token White Guy, but does some great work. He’s got fantastic energy, and creates some excellent chemistry with his fellow actors. He’s really engaging, and his physicality really makes things work. If you choose to listen to the English audio after watching it in Japanese first, his rural US accent may come as a big surprise after hearing his Japanese dub.
Tumblr media
Both Kumi Mizuno and Keiko Sawai [left to right] are excellent in Kaijû daisensô (1965), and I would have liked to see more of their involvement in the story. — — — —
The restaurant set with night sky backdrop [above] and classical music is fantastic! It was probably used as the backdrop for the sequences on the planet’s surface as well, but it looks incredible during this extended scene.
There’s also some great model work for a new army vehicle equipped with A-wave and sound transmitters. They look really detailed and complicated.
Overall, this is a great film, with very silly ideas, and about half of the science (especially about locating the existence of planetary satellites through rotational and gravitational anomalies) being spot-on! Do not plan a trip to Planet X using this film as a model; it should only be used for entertainment purposes. It does that very well.

Why I Felt Relieved When My Husband Lost His Job
ShareTweet
Recently a family member I respect very much asked me a question I didn’t expect.
He said, “do you think your marriage is strong enough for you to be the primary breadwinner now?”
I laughed. I got it, though. It was a big change, after all. Since my firstborn was six months old I had been working part-time. In fact, for the past year and a half, I hadn’t worked more than a day a week. So for roughly six years or more I hadn’t worked a full-time job. Well, actually I had. Being a stay-at-home mom is definitely a full-time job. Overtime even. What I meant was I had not worked full-time outside of the home since I realized that motherhood was my calling in life. I loved being home with my babies! But sometimes often times motherhood means providing for your babies.
My husband has been holding the role of provider very well for many years now, and for the past few he had owned his own business in the way of a local, small restaurant. When he first was afforded the opportunity to switch from head cook to owner I was ecstatic. In retrospect, I know I probably wanted him to own the store more than he did. I often feel guilt over that. I wanted to have a husband who owned a restaurant, not just one who cooked there. I’m ashamed to admit that, but it’s true. The problem was I didn’t realize the toll it would take on him.
It started out well enough, but fairly quickly I saw the stress he was under. He ran a popular business, but even a popular business in a small town struggles. I watched stores in our rural town go out of business all the time and I could see why. Customers are fickle, and times are hard for everyone. The string of business wasn’t always what it needed to be. I watched my spouse take out numerous small business loans over the years to keep things afloat when business was slow, and many, many times I watched him work 60 hour weeks and not bring home a dime to our family. He’d pay his workers but not himself. I know that my Rodan + Field’s business kept us going, but much more it was the Lord providing when he didn’t pay himself a salary.
It’s not that I wish to air our laundry for all the world to see, but it becomes important in where we now stand to share how hard he tried to make things work. I am proud of him. He felt like he was failing us and failing his employees. He held on for that reason much longer than he should have. In the end, we were losing money, going in the hole, and he had to close the doors. Even when he finally did we still found ourselves in multiple debts to the business that couldn’t even feed our family. My breadwinning, hardworking husband found himself without a job. You might wonder how I felt about that?
I felt relief.
When I was asked if our relationship could survive a reversal of roles I had to laugh. I had to laugh because it didn’t bother me at all to go back to work full-time as an RN. It didn’t even bother me that I would need to travel nurse to supplement his lost income. It was my idea, in fact. We had very specific goals for our family, such as homeschooling our children, and only one, full-time working parent was what worked with our goals and desires. It was simply my turn.
Tumblr media
I had watched my husband for years provide for us with a smile on his face, even when what he was doing sadly no longer provided. He never complained, and even when I saw the stress wearing on him, he remained upbeat and loving towards us. He did what he did for his family, and I do what I’m doing now for our family. We’re a partnership, and this is the season we are in now.
We love to share the gospel and consider it our top calling. We have felt and known God has a ministry calling on our life for over twenty years now. As we enter a new season in life that necessitates me working from the road, we consider it an open door to go where God would have us to go to share His love, for His Kingdom purposes. Call it a silver lining.
When you pray for open and closed doors, be prepared for what you’ll get. Then go through the open doors with an attitude of praise, and let the clanging of the closed ones not distract you from God’s blessings for your life.

Anthro Godzilla AU Idea
Been thinking about this for a while, maybe it’s fun
Everything is upscaled, Titans are human like and live a lot like humans. With houses, clothes, electronics etc.
Godzilla is the “King” of a district he lives in. He pretty much runs the whole place. He’s the overseer, the bouncer and security. Godzilla protects the place, as it’s his home and he keeps the balance. Everyone has to follow the rules to keep the peace, or you get and ass whopping from a big, grumpy lizard man. When he’s not “working” he spends his time at home napping, at his best buddy’s Anguirus’s kiosk (to get his snacks and talk), at Barb’s bar in the evening, the weekend at Kong’s gym to work out and the rest at the temple to spend time with his sweet angel Mothra.
The district has:
- Barb’s bar. She’s the owner and barkeeper. Popular place to hang and get drunk. She likes flirting with the male patreons. Also live music in the evening. - Rodan’s mexican style restaurant. If you’re hungry, this is the place to go. Famous for everything spicey. Don’t insult his cooking though, or the fiery Chef will chase you with the biggest knife he has and curse you in Spanish.
- Mothra’s temple. She’s the priestress and helps everyone in need. You need a place for a night and a meal? She’ll help you out. Need a blessing for your family? She’ll bless you. You need someone to talk to in dark times? She’ll listen and give advice and help you back on your feet. She’s also the place’s healer.
- King Kong’s gym. He’ll help you get fit and swoll! He also teaches Yoga and to meditate, if you have anger issues. He’s a pretty nice dude! Just don’t piss him off.
- Scylla’s pet shop. Scylla is also known as the “frog lady” as she keeps many pet frogs in a pond at her house. They keep pests away. She has everything you need for your beloved pets. Even human farms to keep for your kids. (Humans exsist, but they’re more like how we see ants)
- Methusela’s flower shop. Everything green. Often donates flowers to decorate the whole place during festivals. He also sell’s fruits and vegetables on the street market.
- Behemoth’s Café. He makes the best coffee and breakfast menus. Pretty place to hang out in the morning. Open until the evening.
- Angurius’s kiosk. You need snacks? Something to read? He got the stuff. Information? He’s got your back. Angurius knows everything that’s happening around the place.
- King Ghidorah. Foreign business man, wants to tear down the place to grow his little empire. He’s got the money for it. Ghidorah owns a lot of big businesses. San is pretty good with the stock market. He knows when to buy and when to drop. Also he works with bitcoins. Ichi manages everything and also has the last word in everything. He makes most of the decisions. Ni keeps an eye especially on their underlings. Wouldn’t be the first time someone would try to trick them or be lazy with their job. Ni makes sure you do your job and you better do it RIGHT! Ghidorah also isn’t scared of getting his claws dirty and doesn’t shy away from a physical fight. Got in quite a few tossles with Godzilla already.
Now, how does my OC Jira fit in this?
Instead of believing his sister to be dead, Jira is in a coma. There was an accident at their old house when Goji and Jira were kids, shortly after their father died. She’s been at the hospital ever since. Most of Godzilla’s money goes into her medical bills, the rest is for living expenses. She’s been in a coma for 15 years by now, but he refuses to let her go. She’s the only relative he has and keeps hoping she’ll wake up again. He visits her every 2 days and just talks, keeping her up to date with things.
Once she wakes up they live together. She starts working as a waitress in Behemoth’s Café in the morning and plays guitar and sings in Barb’s bar some nights. Ghidorah met her at the Café and actuallly enjoyed the cute, flirty waitress with the big mouth, random puns and threats and compliments she throws at him, throwing through a loop.
That’s all I have so far ^^

A showcase of a range of works that have been hidden away for nearly two centuries from Harvard College’s Philosophy Chamber, a room named for the discipline of natural philosophy, a cornerstone of the Enlightenment-era curriculum that wove together astronomy, mathematics, physics and other sciences in an attempt to explain natural objects and physical phenomena.
