27 - Watch
'All the gold is yours, my loyal crew,' [Laughing Jack] said in a trembling voice. 'If I take one piece of it for my own, I myself will take to the oars. I swear it on my soul!' 'I hear your words, James Gant, and they will bind you!' cried Verity from the prow, her voice as shrill as a sea-bird's call. DELTORA QUEST 3 Isle of the Dead Ch 10 Deadly Bargain

Day 4 - Caring
Jasmine— what was a I thinking searching for a caring character in my mind. I mean, sure, Jasmine is many things: wild, independent, brave... but her most instrinsic quality is her care for everything [not evil].It's Anna's spirit in her. And it's solidly fused with her selflessness and her soft heart beneath layers of ferocity. What a shame that this was her most underrated trait in my eyes for a long time!
When she was orphaned and took care of Filli and Kree; when she met two strangers in the forests and endangered herself once she realized they were not Grey guards; her extensive care for the trees and living things; every time she stubbornly took care of Lief and Barda, with her healing balm and the tiny jar around her neck, symbols of how much she's ready to look after her loved ones (she sometimes had such a motherfigure among the trio); how she tenderly tried to calm down little Ida; how she wept for the small bundle of bones of the fake heir... and the list goes on.
I just realized that about one third of my DQ sketches is solely dedicated to Jasmine and the rest is mostly Jasmine with someone elss. Gosh I love this girl so much I can't even express it appropriately. But anyway here's one of my first versions of her I sketched in 2017 and colored now. I don't agree with some parts of this character design anymore (like how her nose bridge is concave or how instead of being curly, her hair is wavy, or her ragged clothes being foolishly inefficient for living in a forest), or perhaps my drawing style has changed.

Roddacember Day5:Justified/Tom
Tumblr media
‘Tom is not a creature, but a man,’Lief snapped. ‘He should know what is right!’
‘Are you so sure you know?’ Jasmine answered sharply.
Lief stared at her, ‘What do you mean by that?’ he demanded.
‘Do not argue,’ said Balda wearily.
-Rodda.,Emily Deltora Quest 3 City of the Rats
This is a exchange between three of my personal favourites. Lief and Jasmine must have tired Barda out with their frequent arguments over trivial matters.
And, although it's not directly related to Tom's sign, this question from Jasmine is very interesting.
Who really knows what is just and what is not?
What justice is is a very ambiguous thing. Things can look different depending on whether you are looking at them from the east or the west.
The sign that Tom puts up in his shop seems to show Tom's ostensible neutrality, but this is also an indication of Tom's way of being a businessman.
For him, justice means doing business and making money, and selling his own products to help his customers.
Tom's kindness to the Gray Gurds did not seem justified to Lief at the time, but Tom was only acting in a way that seemed justified to him. Of course, if he hadn't done that he wouldn't have been able to stay in business, but staying in business in whatever way he could was the right thing for him to do.
Tumblr media
And above all, as a businessman, it is his greatest justice to treat every customer the same way!
------
Lately I've been interested in resin clay and resin art, so I thought I'd try my hand at making some models.
However, I had to do some redoing, which meant that I was way behind the original schedule.

day 24 - confronting
Rye’s head felt as if it might burst. He could feel the bag of powers warm and pulsing against his skin like a live thing with a heart.
Nine powers to aid you in your quest…
Powers to help the dupe of the Fellan do what the Fellan themselves could not—end Olt’s life and open the way to the Lord of Shadows.
Shuddering with revulsion, Rye tore the bag from his neck so violently that the knotted drawstring snapped and pulled completely out of its casing. Its neck ragged and gaping, the bag lay in his hand like flabby skin shed by some loathsome, creeping animal.
More than anything in the world he wanted to cast it away from him, see the charms scatter in the wind and be lost.
The Third Door // Ch 18 The Head of the Serpent
i imagine the “finding out that during the entirety of your quest you were being used as a pawn for the people you thought you could trust” situation would be pretty confronting to learn, so yeah. that’s not really what happened, but rye didn’t know that at the time so we can just let him have his breakdown
also i just know that if i stare at this any longer i’ll never post it, so i’m just going to post it! come get y’all juice (now in colour!)
(i’ve just realised the fell zone’s not supposed to be on fire yet. smh)

26. Intricate
I collected these while reading s3 because I dont think I've seen them all in one place before
The reason I had first collected them was to compare how the environments of the sisters affected the appearance of the stones (especially isle of the dead, obviously) but I think they're representative of the most intricate and well thought out plot rodda's written

01 | Valiant
Screaming sea-birds, the wind blowing at her hair, and the taste of salt on her lips.
These were all things that Verity had associated with love since she had been a little girl. Love for the sea that brought her fish that fed her, driftwood that her father would carve into toys when she was a child, sprays of water that would cool her on a hot summer’s day. But now the gulls do not sing, their mouths are too full of the berries and fresh water that keep her from death. She counts the nights—wind has not blown in nearly two weeks, not since she was tied to the prow of The Lady Luck. The salt is still there, but it tears at her lips and makes them bleed.
The ropes that bind her to the prow of the boat bite into the flesh not covered by her cloak and nightgown, and thin trails of blood spiral down her arms as the crew below her jeer and shout horrible things, but she does not listen to their crude words. While the water does not move and the waves do not crash, the subtle sounds of the sea play like music in her ears. There is no hatred in her heart for her father and the mistakes he has made, only a deep love and wistful grief. She feels no hunger nor thirst—the birds have cared for that. There is pain, yes, and exhaustion, but the knowledge that she is cared for by something greater and unrelenting than these things brings her comfort.
For a vow once made cannot be broken.
I hear your words, James Gant, and they will bind you.
The blade pierces her heart and the sea screams with her. Blood and bile rise in her throat, choking her last words as pain spreads through her body like a plague. Black blood spills from her wound and her lips, onto the mottled wood of the ship, and into the unforgiving sea. Great waves crash upon the boat, ignoring the screams of the men that have bound her, and instead focusing on the one they love.
Screaming sea-birds, the wind blowing at her hair, and the taste of salt on her lips.
No more fear. No more pain. The sea, her true mother, pulls her soul home beneath the depths.

31. solace
This scene was the first one I wrote for this Roddacember, and the one that struck me so deeply that I decided to do these ficlets in the first place. Something about Rowan having to take more responsibility than he deserves as a literal middle schooler is just so devastating. This moment was so crazy to me but in the book it's just glossed over like it's nothing, just another day in Rowan's life.
---
Marlie had never wanted children.
Bearing children was expected of a woman of Rin, of course, like working the farms in spring or participating in town meetings. While the people of Rin married for love, no one spoke of soulmates, of finding the perfect family. Such was life in a small town like theirs.
Marlie had grown fond of Allun the baker in the past years. He was in the corner of her eye now, laying out a bedroll. Perhaps one day they would wed and have children of their own.
Gazing at the frail, frightened boy across from her, Marlie had never feared anything more.
Rowan, the young Keeper of the Bukshah, stared blankly into the distance, knees hugged to his chest. He shivered despite the warmth of the fire.
The boy was quiet but hid his emotions poorly. He had not complained after nearly falling off the cliff they had climbed earlier that day. But facing swarms of spiders and a swamp of horrors, his wide eyes and balled fists betrayed him.
Rowan had always been a gentle child, a black bukshah amongst the strong Rin people. Marlie silently cursed the wise woman Sheba for dragging him into this quest. He should not be terrified to death on this cursed mountain, pulled into a struggle far greater than he. She rummaged through her travel bag, searching for anything she had to provide some small solace.
“It is not worth carrying this last piece of toffee,” she told him, handing over the candy. Her words distorted her true feelings, in the Rin way. “You could finish it for us, I am sure.”
She was taken aback to hear Strong Jonn and Allun the Baker provide words of comfort alongside her. Jonn suggested that Rowan look over their map one more time, while Allun muttered something sentimental about the moon.
Rowan looked at the three of them, bewildered at the outpouring of affection. His mouth formed a tight smile, as if they were the ones in need of comfort. He dutifully returned Allun’s comment, ate the toffee, and opened the map.
Marlie could never bear the responsibility of a child, she decided. It was too heartbreaking.

Roddacember 2023!!
Roddacember runs during December to celebrate all of Emily Rodda’s books. With a new prompt every day, make a piece of fan content of your choice. You can draw some art, write fic, make a playlist, rant about something, or whatever you vibe with! Remember to tag it #Roddacember 2023 so we can check it out <3 I’ve also created an AO3 collection for those who would like to write fics!
Update
Tumblr media
This is my attempt at taking the best of the past years and bringing something for everyone. What I've come up with are three levels of abstraction that (hopefully) serve as different levels of difficulty. The first week-ish draws more from 2019's style, and the last couple weeks are the more recent style, with the middle being a segue between them. (i kinda struggled to make questions, but you're welcome to use the prompts as keywords for your own!)
Notes
A reminder that you don’t have to commit to every day. Take care of yourself. You can make it more manageable by skipping days. It’s also okay to alter the prompt slightly for grammatical purposes, if you so wish (e.g. growth –> growing) or to cut out irrelevant words (e.g. animal or monster -> animal). Feel free to interpret the prompts as metaphorically or as literally as you want! If there’s anything you are confused about, feel free to ask me in the notes or DMs or whatever. You can also check out what the fandom did previously at #Roddacember 2022, #Roddacember 2021, #Roddacember 2020 and #Roddacember 2019.

Roddacember Day 26 | Plot | Intricate
Today I am paying homage to the plots of most Emily Rodda books with puzzles/games. So much of Rodda’s writing wants the young audience to think and learn and solve alongside the characters- so I thought what better way than to represent the intracity of her work than with a crossword and a word search. I hope you guys have fun with them!

Roddacember Day4:caring-Dirk
When I read The Three Doors for the first time, I was enamoured of Sholto for a while and felt a renewed sense of gratitude to Rodda for writing about him. But as I read it again, two or three times, my admiration for Dirk has been growing lately. I have come to understand very well how Rye admires Dirk as a oldest brother. I'm more of a logic person like Sholto, and I'm not as good as Dirk at thinking about people's feelings and inspiring them. But every once in a while, someone like Dirk gives me the perfect answer to a feeling that I haven't expressed yet. It's as if he's used magic to look into my mind. What's going on in their heads is a mystery to me...... I'm sure they were able to develop such abilities because they needed to look out for and protect those who were weaker than themselves. Such a person is one of those people who, as Rye says, should be exactly in the middle of a lot of people. But I am concerned about the fact that Dirk is always carrying around a memento of his father. I'm sure Dirk has always cared for his brothers, even when their father was alive, but now that he is gone it is clear that his responsibility has become even more important. He may have taken the place of his father and inspired himself to protect his brothers, his mother and his home, but he may also have missed his father, who taught and guided him, and secretly tried to imitate his father's behaviour when he was lost.

day 17 - looming
The silver serpent loomed above them. Its jaws were gaping. Drops of pale gold venom dripped from its fangs and fell sizzling into the churning water. Its eyes were glittering like cold stars and fixed on Rye.
[Rye] slid the bell tree stick from his belt and raised it high. He lifted his other hand, too, fingers spread, making himself as large as he could.
The silver beast recoiled, very slightly. Yes, Rye thought with grim satisfaction. This is not how prey behaves, is it, serpent? Prey tries to escape you. It does not stand and stare. Be careful. Take your time…
Behind them, other serpents were coming to the surface. The sea heaved with writhing bodies. Water showered from a dozen spiked heads of green, yellow, blue, and black as they rose against the scarlet sky and hung there, motionless as masks in some nightmarish puppet show.

1. Valiant
The bone was sharp and white. It had jammed between a tooth and the back of the Dragon's throat, as a twig had once caught in Star's throat. Rowan had removed that twig. He could remove this bone.
He worked gently, knowing the agony the creature was feeling. The Dragon growled. One wrong move, and those terrible jaws would snap closed. Little by little, Rowan eased the bone loose. At last, with a delicate twist, he pulled it free. He backed out of the Dragon's mouth and towards Strong Jonn, holding the bone in his hand.
Several thoughts. Firstly Strong Jonn was RIGHT when he said rowan was brave because 'fearing, you went on.' Its such a valuable piece of knowledge and one of the best things about the series is that Rowan realises he's brave, but not in the same way as the other villagers. He never picks up a sword or becomes brash and loud, but uses the qualities he begins the series with to show his bravery.
Secondly this is one of the best climaxes in a book one can hope for... the hero's bravest moment is not in exhibiting physical strength against a beast but helping an animal in pain. Real bravery is literally leaning into a dragons mouth because even though you're scared you know it's the right thing to do.
Thirdly Miranda's post with signing rowans adoption papers. Yeah.
