Wrapped Scenelets No. 37: control
I'm writing scenelets for (most of) my Spotify Wrapped top 100 songs. Here's number 37, Rearview by Bad Suns.
━━━━━━━━ ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ━━━━━━━━
It was harder to take them down than she expected, but she had them in the dirt quickly enough thanks to the element of surprise. They were trying to wrestle her off, and they almost succeeded, before she landed the first punch. Did they really think she didn’t mean it? Fucker. They destabilized her, got a hit in that jostled her teeth, and then visibly regretted it once their nosebleed was all over her knuckles. She heard the other kids crowding around, not sure whether to cheer on the fighting or get someone to stop it. Not that it would matter either way, because her point would be made well enough in a few more hits.
Suddenly there were hands on her biceps and someone—no, two someones—pulling her off of her quarry.
“Isabel, stop.” Her sister was on her left somehow—she’d never pulled Isabel out of a fight before. Looking to her right made it clear what was different: that new kid, Spinder, was on her other arm. He was the stronger one, but her sister had the weight to balance things out. As soon as Isabel stumbled back to her feet, she threw them both off.
“That’s what you get when you’re a bitch to a Hendriss,” she said, stabbing a finger at the fucker sitting up to hold their bleeding nose. Without looking at anyone else, she turned and made her exit from the circle of assholes.

Q: You’re very much in the mainstream of the country & western scene. What would you say to people who say that it’s a conservative form of music which makes no progress?
A: Well, I don’t agree with them, really. I think that it’s the tradition in the music as opposed to it being conservative. In fact one of the problems in country music for awhile I think was people were forgetting the tradition and the roots of it and calling it “country” and it really didn’t have much meat to it. But now that there’s a progression to it that’s carrying the tradition with it, I think artists like Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell, Ricky Skaggs, John Anderson, there’s really a lot - of course Willie Nelson, what can I say about that? He’s wonderful - but mainly the newer artists, I think that there’s really some good things happening in country music now. I was worried for awhile, but now I can turn on the radio and hear some good stuff.

I'm rewatching all the jeannie episodes of stargate atlantis now and throwback to that time rodney begged john to allow a wraith to drain the life out of him (and probably kill him) so he could save jeannie. and john said "you are not doing this" and then talked a guy into killing himself by showing him photos of jeannie's family and convincing him to do the very same thing he wouldn't allow rodney to do. because, uh, that was intense.

The Assistant Book Seller
Edit 1 Dec 2023 - added missing information on the "ribbon pattern."
Edit: 3 Dec 2023 - correct information about middle pattern from creator
GABRIEL: Greetings! I'm Jim! It's short for James, but I don't need to keep telling everyone that. I'm an assistant book seller.
I'm sorry. Before I do anything else, I need to apologize for something I need to write further in. I didn't plan to write it, I just kind of bumped into it and, well, I can't ignore it. So...sorry. It's said. Forgive me for what needs to be done.
Tumblr media
Although he arrived with nothing but a cardboard box and Rodney the Stunt Fly, Aziraphale made sure Jim was clothed in appropriate raiment while under his protection. We'll forgive him that he took a step back about, oh, fifty years or so to the 1970's, as Jim's overall look is a nod to the famous old sitcom "Open All Hours." So if he looks a little bit out of place, or, a little bit familiar, even, that's why.
While we are used to seeing angels in overcoats, it's Jim's vest that is the particular feature here. But I will take a moment to comment on the overcoat - not just the colour but its lapels. Aziraphale has obviously given him a colour with an earthly connection and one that indicate that he has bought Jim under his protection, but the lapels look quite neutral, with one up and one down. (Muriel is the same in their Inspector uniform, btw) This is the first indication they are between two things at the moment.
Onto the vest.
There is so, so much work and thought put into this vest! It was a one-off commission for the show, and the creator, Sandy Higgins, has said she is not allowed to give away the final design pattern. I have tried to contact her, and I'm waiting for a reply, so in the mean time I thought I would ask my keen knitter of a sister-in-law about one of the patterns I'm not sure about. "Well, that's Fair Isle knitting," she said, but she knew nothing about the individual line pattern I was interested in. Hmm, I kind of know that already, its in the notes that are guiding me for this meta, but hey, why not do a broader search and see what comes up?
So once I got back home I did. "Fair Isle knitting patterns" hmm...Wikipedia page for starters...what on *earth* is that at the bottom of the page...? YOU ARE. FRIKKING. KIDDING ME!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
"See also: Gumbys"
oh ffs
I am so sorry that needs must make me mention Monty Python yet again, but here we are. And we must mention them, because this link is just too...unbelievably, deliciously good.
If you aren't familiar with the Monty Python catalogue, and don't recognize the mention of Gumbys, they were a set of characters that dressed and spoke in a certain way but the main points to take away were they wore woolen vests in the Fair Isle knitted style and their catch-phrase was - wait for it - "My brain hurts!"
I think we've heard that somewhere before?
CROWLEY: When you first arrived, you said you were here because they were planning to do 'Something Terrible' to you. So you remembered it then. Remember it now. GABRIEL: It hurts to remember. My head isn't built for that.
Right. Now we've got that out of the way...back to the serious stuff.
The colours used in the vest are not your typical angel colours. There is a base of angelic off-white and there are some bits of purple for his royalty around the shoulder area - sometimes you need to look carefully for it. Otherwise it is dominated by vintage shades of red and green. Well. Who's an agent of change driven by love, then?
The horizontal stripe pattern is partly to remind us of the classic biblical robes with stripes that ran along them, much like the style of Crowley's black and red robe in the Job minisode, but is also part of the traditional Fair Isles pattern work. And each row only has two colours, but up around the shoulder area we do see purple start to sneak in as a third colour.
On to the incorporated symbols! I'm going to go from bottom to top.
On the lowest two we feature Crowley and Aziraphale. We have Crowley's demon satyr tail from the Good Omens logo on the lowest stripe - the double-headed arrow.
The next stripe is Aziraphale, with a variation of the classic OXO pattern ("hugs and kisses.") The X is meant to represent his angel wings, and the O is modified to mimic the "o" with a halo in the Good Omens logo. I've highlighted all three in the image on the right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The third row up is a Sumerian Star pattern that represents one of the flowers associated with Gabriel, the lily. They are supposed to represent the purity of Mary, mother of Jesus, as he had one in his hand when he visited her during the Annunciation.
The row above that is what I believe to be a Byzantium pattern, and is included to show "an Angel's ability to be timeless."
Tumblr media
The next three rows are still under a bit of a question mark as I write this. I plan to come back and edit it in if I find the answer.
The bottom of the three is the Duke of Buccleuch pattern, "to celebrate the long and necessary contribution that the cottage industry of hand knitted items."
The middle one - ? (perhaps you, the reader, know? It looks like a spiralling ribbon if I stand back, but that isn't sparking any connections, either.)
Edit: @noneorother tells me in a reblog (below) that this pattern represents the shoelace from the magic incantation Aziraphale uses "Banana Fish Gorilla Shoelace." So it is ribbon-like! This then points to the Second Coming, as it the shoelace references the end of the book, and the last paragraph of the book references Yeats poem "The Second Coming" as well as the novel 1984. To me it is then also telling us there is a cycle occurring, or a cycle that needs to be renewed. This fits in with some other clues other meta-writers have been picking up.
Edit 2: Turns out none of that was correct - I heard back from the creator herself and it's actually the double-ended satyr tail pattern again! It just seems to make a bit of an illusion of a ribbon or shoelace.
Tumblr media
The pattern below is a modified OXO pattern.
The top one looks like two rams horns facing each other. A hollowed out rams horn can be used as a trumpet, and is known as a shofar in Jewish religion. Gabriel was traditionally known to carry a trumpet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ancient meander pattern would be recognized by most people, included as another classic timeless pattern found all over the world. For some it symbolizes eternity and endless flow.
Tumblr media
The wheels here appear to be Michael's ophanim wheels, that would have eyes around the rims.
Tumblr media
The hourglass is to remind us that time is running out. Memento mori - "Remember that you die." It is a major theme in both series.
Tumblr media
Right up high, just before we lose the rest of the vest inside the overcoat, we get a glimpse of a large diamond-shaped icon. I wonder if this is another stylized set of angel wings, like we saw in the Job minisode on Aziraphale's golden collar.
Tumblr media
To finish off the outfit, he is wearing dark gray trousers with sneakers! I'm sure that's so he could keep sneaking up on Aziraphale in the shop, haha. His shirt seems a little too large for him and the tie is knotted too high and is not settled along his centerline. It's all at odds with his previous neat and sharp appearance as Supreme Archangel Gabriel.
I'd like to say a big thank you to @aduckwithears for helping me with information on the vest and finding the creator's other social media sites. You can see their two posts about it here and here.

kiss prompts
9- In Public
"It's nice being able to hold your hand," John said as they made their way down the busy Vancouver street. They were visiting the Miller's for the weekend, and Jeannie had insisted on everyone walking down to Madison's favourite diner for lunch- apparently they had a turkey sandwich that John would die over.
"Yes, well, being away from the watchful eyes of the primitive United States military helps with being able to do normal couple things," Rodney shot back, and three years ago the comment might have made John nervous. But he knew Rodney, and he could see the flicker of amusement in his eyes.
It was part of why they worked so well.
"It also means I get to do this," John mumbled as he pulled Rodney into him, kissing him deeply and passionately in the middle of the sidewalk. Someone bumped into them, apologizing without looking up, and John was allowed to not care.
"You know, I still can't believe you found someone genuinely happy to do that with you, Mer," Jeannie said loudly, interrupting their kiss. John laughed at the way Rodney pulled away and glared at his sister.
"And I can't believe you found someone willing to put up with the obnoxious comments you like to pretend count as humour," Rodney shot back. Jeannie laughed loudly.
"Oh, Mer, you don't get to pretend you know what humour is," Jeannie said, and the two started bickering as they walked down the sidewalk, Rodney never letting go of John's hand, even as his own was flailing around, John's hand being dragged helplessly along.
John smiled.

hello and how are you?
We had to come scurrying over after we found your WIP Name Game! Honestly, a lot of those names make us want to ask after them, this Work seems to be filled with good things, but!
Can we see something from these parts? Whatever you want to share? ( •̀ω•́ )σ
Farewell to the Ancestors, Tatiana Arvenswold, that secret option from the tags that you want to scream about
Have fun with it too! If ya wanna pass or go wild, then this is your invitation to do so! we're entirely intrigued!
☕ Natsume Rune, @365runesoftheamalgamations
From this list
Thank you so much for the ask! I actually talked about the one that made me want to scream over here, but "queueing" is a similar sort of scene, where Spinder gets into a different unusual conversation. The Nicea has been queueing for a warp transit for hours, Tristan has taken a sleeping pill, and Rodney is left having to make his first non-training warp transit:
The door slid open six inches and Spinder blinked sleepily up at him. “What?” he said with the distance of someone still shaking off a dream. “We’re clear to transit in a few minutes, and I just need someone to sit on the bridge with me while I do it.” He raised his eyebrows but didn’t argue. “Let me get some pants on. I’ll be right there.” The door shut again. Rodney decided to trust him and go back to the pilot’s seat. Tristan’s seat. It felt too big, even though it was only marginally larger than his own. He was about to take the unnecessary step of strapping himself in when he remembered that his coffee was halfway across the bridge and went to grab it. Spinder showed up at the same time, half-covering a massive yawn while he dropped into his usual seat. The pants he’d put on were just the lower half of his flight suit, zipped up to his waist with the sleeves tied over it.
"Farewell to the ancestors" was previously an almost-empty scene where I planned to have Tristan visit the graveyard where most of her family is buried and say goodbye to them before the trip, but this ask made me want to work on it some more:
Tristan climbed to the top of the hill, weaving the familiar path through the generations of her family’s gravestones. At each one, she ran a hand over the small dome carved from the top of the stone, feeling the grooves left by increasing generations of hands. On the oldest markers at the top, the dome had started to become a valley.
And "Tatiana Arvenswold" is one of my favorites. This is deep into their space journey, after assorted disasters, when Spinder and Isabel first meet Tatya, who stays with them pretty much to the end of the book:
Isabel was aware of someone passing their table, but didn’t look up until a pale brown hand rapped on the tabletop. Standing over her was a person whose brown hair seemed to be all cowlicks, even into their loose ponytail, with a scruffy half-attempt at a chinstrap beard and a wide baby-pink collar choker peeking out past the massive triangular lapels of their khaki jacket. They were completely ignoring her in favor of Spinder, and she prepared herself to bolster his defense. “Hey, are you Spinder?” they asked. “You look just like the picture Gwinny sent me.” Spinder blinked. “I am. Are you…the warp witch?” They grinned. “Tatiana Arvenswold at your service. She-her or whatever you feel like.” They turned just enough that Isabel could see the silver heart-shaped ring in the front of their choker. Their eyes lingered on her face, and at first she thought they were looking at her bruises in order to make a dumbass comment about them. Then she got a full once-over, and when their eyes met again Tatiana’s gaze was thirsty. “And who are you?” “I’m Isabel,” she said. “The captain of the Nicea.” “Oh, nice, nice. So, uh, y’all in need of a warp witch? Or a finder?”

The thing that is truly wonderful about this episode is not Rod from another dimension. It's Sheppard going out of his way to help Rodney heal his relationship with his sister. If anyone knows how annoying and arrogant Rodney can be, it's Sheppard. But if anyone knows how courageous and caring Rodney can be, it's Sheppard.
Sheppard listens to Rodney talk about not liking Rod, he helps Rodney get to the point of understanding why his sister is upset with him, and then he helps him heal that relationship.
And then, he takes it one step further and rebuilds Rodney's faith in his friends, that they love him and want him around.
Such a great episode. It always makes me tear up when Rodney and Jeanie fix things.
Also, I love that Jeanie is a mom and is happy to be so. I love her house, her wardrobe, her relationship with her husband and daughter. I love that she isn't thrown under the bus for the choices she makes or devalued next to Elizabeth and Carter. In fact, Rod praises her for being the best mom he knows. High praise indeeded.

So my brother and sister-in-law have a young kid, brother works, but SIL hasn't since early in the pregnancy and wanted to try to start something part-time. I put in a good word for SIL for a part-time position at the store I work in so she could do a few hours here and there around childcare. It started off fine, got all the paperwork sorted, and her first few training shifts went okay. Then she met the assistant manager. My assistant manager apparently made some "not very nice" comments about the fact that my SIL is an immigrant. My SIL wasn't sure about reporting it to the store manager because SIL is new at the job, but I was just like screw that and helped her file a complaint about it. It might not come to anything, but it was worth a shot.
Definitely FUCK RACIST MANAGERS! Or any racist person for that matter.
-Rodney
