gintama's popularity poll arc is so funny to me because yamazaki really fakes getting jumped and scared everyone else into fearing for their rank just because he wanted to cause chaos and make himself Not Boring. like that’s my goat right there what an insane set of actions I love him so much

I Owe an Apology to Cherry Magic Thailand
This is me righting a wrong. A few weeks ago I wrote this post in response to an ask about Thai BL including what Thai BLs airing at the time I was enjoying the most; I listed Cooking Crush and Dead Friend Forever, which was true. I didn't list Cherry Magic Thailand, and the reason for that is the timing of that post coinciding with the very unfortunate Cherry Magic Thailand episode 8 which was a filler episode that made some really unfortunate choices. None of those choices affected the relationship writing or character arcs of the main characters, but the conflict was poorly written--it didn't fit well in the narrative, it didn't even really make sense, and it didn't land the way it was clearly meant to--and I was afraid that the writers of the show would not realize the really interesting things they had done with the main characters in the Thai adaptation and how that would have to change the way the story progressed in order to be consistent, and so I was ready to watch this show go off the rails. But happily, I was wrong, and instead we got an excellent episode 9 and 10, so I am here to publicly tell you:
Watch Cherry Magic (Thai adaptation)!
The one episode 8 misstep is worth living through for the greatness that is happening in this series.
If you're familiar with the source material, here are a few things that I absolutely LOVE the Thai adaptation is doing (very light spoilers, I kept the big stuff out so that you could read and still be pleasantly surprised if you decide to watch the show):
The "magic" is used in fun and clever ways that keep the show funny, interesting, and fresh
Achi [the Thai Adachi] is more self-actualized and self-driven from the get-go, and is more willing to fight for the relationship
Karan [the Thai Kurosawa] is even more of a simp, and is less outwardly perfect than in the Japanese live action, and is also a little hornier (though not as much as the anime version lol)
Both Achi and Karan have stronger character arcs in the Thai adaptation than Adachi and Kurosawa did in the Japanese live-action
Jinta and Min [the Thai version of Tsuge and Minato] are also really great; they're hitting a lot of the same beats but at different times, which makes their progression feel stronger, and there is less of an emphasis on the age difference between them than in the Japanese live action
Min also gets an arc with Rock [Rokkaku] that gives him more depth than in the Japanese live action
We get more of Jinta and Achi's friendship than we did with Adachi and Tsuge
Pai [Fujisaki in the Japanese adaptation] is a fujoshi, which is from the original manga, but the show is still doing something really interesting with her as (I think?) a nod to Fujisaki in the Japanese live action being on the aro/ace spectrum
They have done a great job making the show feel Thai (e.g. including Thai cultural festivals, changing the scarf to an umbrella, adjusting the humour)
There is a kiss!
Anyway. I'm really enjoying it, and it's worth fighting past the annoyance of needing a VPN set to Thailand and waiting an extra day in order to access the show on VIU's website.

Cherry Magic Anime Ep 4 Stray Thoughts
Last week, Adachi and Kurosawa both got anxious at a company party. Rokkaku keeps messing up Adachi's name, and Adachi intervened to get some creeps off Fujisaki but needed Kurosawa's help. We got to see Kurosawa's arc with Adachi and the sexual harassment from the client, and learned that Adachi is Kurosawa's first experience with m/m attraction, but he is READY. As usual, Kurosawa's drawn to Adachi's kindness.
Oh hell yeah it's time for Tsuge and Minato.
I like how they always capture that Minato is cute in a way that doesn't feel affected.
I will watch Tsuge turn into a mess for Minato in every iteration every time.
Adachi, you got so jealous that you didn't even hear what Tsuge had to say! Now you're getting your suit wet!
I like this insight into how Adachi has had so many romantic false starts that he just backed off of it entirely.
Kurosawa, thank you for feeding this man, because he was on the struggle bus.
"Go play in traffic, normies." I love this bitter version of Adachi.
Adachi has finally realized his own feelings and met Big Sis Kurosawa.
Next week: cohabitation!
I love that every version of Cherry Magic gives us a different look at the characters. I like how this version is leaning into how this many romantic false starts has made Adachi shy and a little resentful of couples. I like that he's a little bitter. It's a good narrative, because the thrust of the story is how you only get to experience love when you open yourself up to people and accept their kindness and efforts.

Something I kinda exaggerate in okiria lore but IS suggested in canon is what I call "Sougo's second life". Under cut bc I'm entering Sougo Scholar Mode
The TLDR is that I believe Sougo has certain relationships with the community that he tries to keep "sacred" from the obligations of being a captain
It's first seen in the underground fighting ring episode. When he is not allowed to shut down the illegal ring under the jurisdiction of the shinsengumi, he goes out of uniform and begins chasing leads on his own. Hijikata comments on how he's almost unrecognizable because he never works this hard on the clock.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later in the same episode, after everything goes down with Kidomaru, it's implied that he is the one who took the initiative to consult/guide the kids left behind
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's also the detail (that I use most in okiria lore) that Sougo, despite struggling to make friends his age, is actually very friendly with older people around town, enough so that he is shown being friendlier than normal, making small talk, and the townspeople notice small details/changes about him. Overall, he seems like a very different person than who he usually is when acting within the shinsengumi
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it makes sense! He does identify himself as an old-fashioned country samurai after all, and Mitsuba does say even as a child he was better at forming relationships with older people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So all of this is to say, I really do believe that off the clock/outside of SSG, Sougo has connections/friendly relationships with the outside community. I really wouldn't be surprised if he helps them out sometimes not as a SSG officer, but as a neighbor. I headcanon that it's because he is aware of the responsibilities of being a SSG officer, and at times seems to dislike the fact that his role is limited by politics, so this is the only way for him to actually create good/form relationships in his mind.
Tumblr media
This is also shown in Rokkaku arc when he gets in trouble for a very similar reason as the Kidomaru episode– his morals did not align with his responsibility as a captain, so he sneaks around (to his own detriment) in order to protect the feelings of those around him.
(I reached photo limit and my streaming is being spotty so my source is: dude trust me. Also Kagura saying "he went through all that just to keep a girl from crying". Honestly I would cite all of Rokkaku arc here)

Gintama Episode Tourney
Episode 180, "The More Precious The Burden, The Heavier And More Difficult It Is To Shoulder It" Gintoki takes on Jiraia, determined to show that the assassin doesn't deserve to be called master. The climax of the Red Spider Arc.
Episode 187, "It's Goodbye Once A Flag Is Set" Okita continues to hide the truth about what happened during the Rokkaku Incident, but the truth will ultimately be revealed. The second half of the Rokkaku Arc.

excluding ones more focused on character development/backstory that were already included here (you can still vote on them) and including an 'other' option this time because there are So Many (rokkaku being the one that was worst to cut, but ended up getting removed in favor of arcs that were 4-5 episodes)

just woke up and saw your SOS message and rushed here. I will save you from your car agony. anyway… gintama arc tier list in terms of ease and juiciness for making AMVs?
thank you!! I immensely appreciate the gesture
ohhh good question let me see. obviously it greatly depends on the song and what scenes you would need for it, but:

Four devas
Renho
Scandal
Host club
Thorny
Kintama
Coan

Rengokukan
Memory loss
Infant strife
Mitsuba
Ryugujo
Kintaro
Ghost ryokan
Tama quest
Kabukicho stray cat
Patriot reunion (less easy scenes one (me) would think just going by memory)
Kaientai
fun and easy (many scenes that work well but less interesting arcs (nb: not necessarily bad but, yknow, less interesting than others for amvs. but again it depends on what you want to do so not necessarily)):
Go-ninja
Hardboiled detective
Owee
Correspondence
Shinsengumi death game
Otsu
Rokkaku

I want to ask an in depth summary of all the arcs with your characters but it might take a little while 😭 so how about more details for those (if it's not too much):
Teito: Shinsengumi Crisis, Rokkaku and Baragaki
Yan: Four Devas
Seiji: Love Choriss (pls tell me he never got his harem), Kintama, Courtesan of a Nation and Genderbend arc (girl Seiji 😳)
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING AND I AM SO SORRY FOR THE WAIT 😭❤️❤️❤️
Teito:
Shinsengumi Crisis Arc: This is the arc where the tone shifts for Teito. Up until this point, Teito is shown as a mild personality. He's not particularly special in anything other than his face and peach jokes. Ito does not attempt to recruit Teito into his faction. He thinks Teito's soft and a pushover, and worse yet, it seems like his sword is ornamental because Teito does not take on active combat duty within the Shinsengumi, which is even more egregious for a captain— Ito has already decided that there will be no room for weakness within the new Shinsengumi. Teito is separated from Kondo and Sougo, ambushed by several members of the Ito faction sent to kill him. Teito asks (politely too, who does that?) them to surrender, and that's hilarious to the assassins because who's asking who to surrender? It's 1 to 6, Teito is outnumbered. After a second confirmation that they really won’t back down, Teito gets into position, gives them his sincerest regrets to their utter amusement, and moves. You won’t see the actual fight or the aftermath, only him successfully rejoining the group later on, alone and covered in blood (Hijikata chews the HELL out of him, did you fight, teito?! commit seppuku! no stop, why are you committing seppuku!?!). Other scenes include him helping form the human rope to save Ito from falling, and then part of the circle of Shinsengumi members around Ito's last fight, in solidarity. And during Pusuke's (and Yamazaki's) funeral, Teito looking incredibly sad and offering forth a plate of peaches, rubbed smooth and looking absolutely mushy, except for one peach that is left fuzzy, to be rubbed in the afterlife— for Pusuke that is, not Yamazaki. (yamazaki in the background going, no one wants your rotten peaches, but why are you giving it to the dog instead of me?!?? Dogs can't even rub peaches!!!!— and then teito pausing and sliding one of the mushy peaches off of pusuke's plate to put in front of yamazaki's portrait— oi!!!! you clearly gave me that peach as a second thought! at least give me the fuzzy one!)
Rokkaku Arc: (he's the only one who would enjoy the tabasco topped cakes) A small role, he shows up at the end with the Shinsengumi— not exactly there for combat support, but as the head of Communications and Media Relations, who is also in charge of keeping official records. There's the inaccurate Rokkaku record in his hand. Even Sougo has to take a good pause at Teito's very gentle smile. Only reason why Sougo's not outright slacking off with all those loads of paperwork at the end of arc is because dealing with Teito about it is too annoying (and delightfully scary! according to Kamiyama).
Baragaki Arc: Teito's backstory unravels a little here. Tetsunosuke arrives. He's the belligerent nepo baby we all know and hated. Is disrespectful to all his senpais, especially to Teito of all people. Spits on Teito's shoes and calls him an ugly pushover. In another scene, there's a rap battle. Hijikata and the rest of the Shinsengumi watches as Tetsunosuke and his cronies start off with a diss, and Teito finally gets serious, picks up a mic, wears a baseball cap on backwards, becomes T-Peach and returns fire with a diss of his own (but instead of it being an insult, it's filled with praise). Tetsunosuke is sweating, but he won't be beat! They go back and forth in the battle of hate vs love, until Tetsunosuke snaps and bursts out with a "Don't mess with me! You were dumped here by my brother too, weren't you? You're a failure like me!"
Teito is present during the encounter with Isaburo (Hijikata took Teito along for the ride in attempt to smooth things over between him and Tetsunosuke). At the end of the interaction, Isaburo, turning to Teito, says this: 'Teito-kun. Rolling in the mud with the pigs when you could've been rolling with the elite. I told you that you'd regret not taking my hand to pull yourself up, didn't I? Look at how they chained you, how useless your sword is now. As lowly as you are, I wouldn't take you back even if you crawled and begged and tried to bribe me with a limited edition Super LOVE Musume Evening CD.'
And Teito smiles, saying this : 'Isaburo-san, it's as you've said before, I am so far beneath you that I would've dirtied your hand if I touched it. As it is, I prefer rolling in the mud instead of rolling with the elites. A pig can do that with dignity. By the way, I prefer Tan-Maid'
Isaburo narrowing his eyes. 'Oh dear. How you've changed.'
'And you, Isaburo-san.'
Tetsunosuke goes from B-boy to C-boy, and bows until the back of his head is showing to Teito-senpai, apologizing for his rudeness at the beginning of the arc— to which Teito accepts good-naturedly. Tetsunosuke mentions that he feels like they have a lot of things in common, especially with them both being scorned by his brother Isaburo. Teito smiling and saying that he feels that even though Isaburo-san had said all those hurtful things, he still must care for Tetsunosuke, uhm, in his own way. And Tetsunosuke shaking his head, thanking Teito for being kind and trying to spare his feelings, but his older brother really doesn't care for him at all, that's why Tetsunosuke was sent to the Shinsengumi. Teito looks thoughtful as Tetsunosuke runs off the find the vice-commander.
(With Tetsunosuke trying to make himself useful and bombarding Hijikata 24/7, Hijikata swears it's like dealing with rookie Teito 2.0 all over again, because it kinda is— Teito's the one who happily gave Tetsunosuke advice and a list of all of Hijikata's likes and dislikes.)
In the Shinsengumi's clash with the Mimawarigumi, Teito is with Yamazaki, Kondo, and Sougo, while Hijikata is dealing with Isaburo. It’s Teito who ends up catching the end of the Tetsunosuke’s rope (sorry yamazaki 😔💔 but I wanted to connect scenes here).
Effectively blocks off any escaping stragglers from Check It Out gang by obsessively rubbing peaches (And one. And two. And three— there’s a real creep just rubbing off all the fuzz on the peaches! What the hell is wrong with these people!?)
Teito disguised as a Mimawarigumi member as he raises his sword to the back of Isaburo’s unprotected head. Isaburo’s huffing out in annoyance and undeniable humor. ‘I thought you couldn’t use your sword anymore.’
and Teito quietly saying back, ‘My sword was never the problem, and the Shinsengumi nor Tetsunosuke were never really the problem either— but you knew that all this time didn’t you, Isaburo-san?’
… Don’t know what you mean, Teito-kun. Every single last one of you are damn thorns in my side.
Yan:
Four Devas arc: A very small background character role, I'm sorry to say 😔 this is in the aftermath episode with Kujaku Hime Kada. There's the scene where Kamui and Abuto are comparing the deranged princess to consoles and Yan puts his own two cents in with a 'playdia.' and then Abuto's like 'no, no, more like a genesis'. And he's there as backup for Kamui's escaped execution—breaking through a closed off entrance with Abuto and the rest of the 7th division in tow. In the middle of the chaos, he accidentally crushes Ma*ko's foot, and she's shrieking her head off, calling him all sorts of names like "you fat brute" which totally hurts his feelings and keeps him awake at night, he's always been sensitive about his weight
Seiji:
Love Choriss arc:
Kintama arc:
Courtesean of a Nation arc:
Genderbend arc:
lemme reblog Seiji's stuff filled out later 😭 he can wait 😔

Hellloooo, how's it going? I've just finished gintama yesterday and I legit feel so empty oml i want to go back to when i started it:((( i remember you saying you're still in the process of watching it so which episodes did you enjoy most? For me, i was absolutely in love with episodes 153 and 156+ The umbrella one, it was oh so cute. Hope you're having a great day!!!
istg, I am dreading the moment I finish it! My pace of watching is soooo irregular because part of me is like yay let's get to the good Takasugi centric episodes, but another part of me is BUT IF YOU DO THAT, YOU'LL BE CLOSE TO THE ENDING AND THEN YOU'LL BE LEFT WITH NOTHING! So, trust me, I feel your pain even when I haven't finished watching it. The fact that I know what sort of happens in the movie DOES NOT HELP EITHER!
Anyways, anyways, I have sooooo many episodes that I've loved! It will take ages for me to list all of them but I'll try to mention some of the episodes I really liked for different reasons. Gonna be a looooooong post but eh, Gintama is pure of epicness, what can I say!
(mostly random order, but I'll give a shoutout to my most favorite ones)
Zura Episodes:
Starting this post, I want to give a special shoutout to some of my favorite Zura Episodes. I started Gintama because of his VA and because I thought Zura looked really cool. I knew nearly nothing about the show but I did end up loving Katsura and up to this day he is one of my favorite characters. His episodes are some of the funniest to me and I always end up losing it whenever he appears.
Anyways, said episodes are episode 13 (Captain Katsura), 25 (hot pot),39 (Ikumatsu), 43-44 (go ninja arc), 64 (the interview), 98-99 (Owee arc), 109 (Jackie's nose and Yamazaki LMFAO)
Other than the hilarious Zura episodes, I wanna mention a few more comedic arcs/episodes that I really enjoyed.
Namely, episode 28 (the one with Kondo and Matsudaira being "attacked"), 35 (Matsudaira's daughter and warrior of love Mayo 13),74 (unibrow pandemic), 83 (Shogun's debut and allow me to say that I can't watch a Shogun episode without cracking up), 151-152 (Barber arc, I COULDN'T BREATHE OKAY), 200-201 (Santa arc)
Next on, we have arcs that were funny to me but weren't 100% pure comedy.
For example, Infant Strife arc (51-52) had its sad moments but it has one of the most memorable Gin/Zura interactions (NYAN NYAN)
Mother arc (54-55) was really enjoyable to me too! I love the concept of Hosts and the whole mix up with who the son was, was hilarious. I'm still not over the Just Do it Gin moment or Gura LMAO
Hasegawa Trial (94-95)arc was also pretty funny to me and although Gin tends to lowkey ruin the man's life, his line about giving him a rope to pull himself up was very memorable and touching to me.
Character Poll Arc (182-184), Hasegawa cosplaying Takasugi, Kondo cosplaying Kagura, Yamazaki going full on villain, do I need to say more?
Yagyuu Arc (76-81) This arc had many funny moments. Princess Bubbles, the toilet showdown, Kagura and Sougo teaming up, Kondo shitting himself. In terms of story I wasn’t super amazed but it made me laugh a lot and is still very memorable to me. I also like Kyuubei as a character and, I liked how we got a bit of Hijikata’s backstory.
Then there are a couple of episodes/mini arcs that were on spot for me and I really enjoyed!
Episode 63 painted a better image of Zenzou's character and considering he is one of my favorite characters, I loved that episode. It was cute af, no denying.
Episode 17 is an episode I also feel like mentioning because it was Takasugi's debut. For me it wasn't love at first sight, I actually started crushing on him during Benizakura, BUT, I've rewatched ep 17 many many times since and for that, it deserves a spot here.
Episode 186-187 aka Rokkaku arc. Sougo tends to look like a pretty messed up person (which he is) but I love the few episodes that showcase how he is more than a sadistic little bastard (love him). And so the next arc won’t be surprising, since it’s
Episode 86-87 aka Mitsuba arc. I don’t even wanna talk about this one, it made me cry, it broke me,I felt depressed after watching it. Yet, it was beautiful and to me it’s definitely one of the best Gintama arcs. The story was great, we got to see another side to Sougo and why he “hates” Hijikata. Plus, it’s one of the arcs that really shows the bond between the Shinsengumi. And, finally, I’ve always kinda liked Hijikata but he was never one of my favorites. This arc made me love him and now he is in my top 5 best characters from Gintama.
Episode 148-149 aka Shinsengumi Death Game Arc. This one is quite simple, I am a big horror fan and I love saw as a franchise so there’s that.
Episode 190-192 aka Kabukicho Stray Cat Arc. I am also a big cat person (I MEAN I LIKE CATS A LOT, NOT BIG CATS SPECIFICALLY. ALTHOUGH BIG CATS ARE NICE TOO. ALL CATS ARE. ANYWAYS!) and honestly this arc was the perfect mix between comedy and drama. I loved Hoichi’s story and in general animal stories get to me.
Episode 215 well, for me this is one of the best episodes for many reasons, the most obvious ones being Takasugi and Kamui. God knows how many screenshots I’ve taken from this episode, I loved the story, I loved their team up, I loved how we got to see some moments between the Kiheitai, it was all sooooo so good! I haven’t even watched any other episodes since because I can’t get over the fact that I won’t see Takasugi for another looooong while lmao. Just great episode 10/10 from me.
And now that all the comedic, small arc, character centric episodes are out of the way, I’ll get to my most favorite arcs of all.
7. Episode 31-32 Memory Loss Arc
Up until that episode, Yorozuya kept getting themselves into random Shenanigans and what not, but this small arc right there shows how much they’ve bonded with one another. It’s the first time they face a kind of struggle in their little family and watching how they are unwilling to give up on one another is heart warming to me, especially Kagura’s speech about the branches and the tree.
6. Episode 40-42 Umibozu Arc
I remember how I was dying to know more about Kagura and her backstory. This arc is proof that sometimes the bonds you create with others can be just as strong as blood ties. Even if Umibozu is her father, Gin and Shinpachi are also her family. Plus, I feel like it’s a very realistic take on families. Oftentimes parents don’t understand their children and what they want, something that creates conflict between them even when their intentions are pure. Umibozu doesn’t know how to be a great father and accepts the fact that his daughter will be happier with Yorozuya than with him. He ends up respecting her decision and tries to turn into a better dad, or at least the dad she needs. People say that Benizakura was the first great arc of Gintama but to me, Umibozu arc did a great job as well.
5. Episode 177-181 Red Spider Arc
I absolutely loved this arc and was hyped from the beginning to its end. We got a better look into Tsukuyo as a person, as well as her master, the man who made her into who she is. Jiraia to me was a very interesting character and although I didn’t agree with his views, I can’t deny the fact that they were pretty original. The concept of utter self sacrifice in order to protect people is something you wouldn’t expect from a “villain” type of character and the fact that he wanted to kill her because he couldn’t bear to kill himself (even if it was proven to be false at the end) was quite unique. Also, we got to see a comparison between Tsukuyo/Jiraia and Gin/Shouyou as a student/master duo and how completely different they were. The scene where Jiraia dies and Tsukuyo carries him while Zenzou and Gin talk about how they were unable to carry the burden of their teachers is heartbreaking. On another note, this arc is another arc that includes Zenzou after many episodes of absence, and we get to see more interactions between Gin and Tsukuyo. I’m not a huge Gintsu shipper, but I find their relationship cute and overall this arc had a romantic undertone that I enjoyed for once. PLUS, drunk Tsukki was priceless, hands down.
4. Episode 139-146 Yoshiwara In Flames Arc
I wasn’t too much into the whole Housen thing, in fact he is one of the characters I really disliked and couldn’t sympathize with. But, this arc introduced us to Tsukuyo, Kamui and Abuto. Now I really like Tsukki and Abuto but Kamui? I absolutely adore him! This might as well be renamed to Kamui’s arc because all I could focus on was him LMAO. I it’s a great arc, full of action and epic moments. I love arcs that include red light districts (f.e. I loved the last season of Demon Slayer) as they have a certain appeal, so this arc resonated with me. A notable moment is how Kagura lost it! Even if she is a bit domesticated at this point, the Yato spirit still lives within her and she is crazy strong. The two siblings just stole this arc for me along with the scenes with the kunai knives sticking to, mostly, Gin. Oh and the metaphors were top tier!
3. Episode 101-105 Shinsengumi Crisis Arc
This arc just like Mitsuba's arc, this one portrays the relationship between the Shinsengumi members perfectly! We see what makes Kondo a great leader, how Sougo is loyal to him no matter what, how Yamazaki plays them all and of course, how Hijikata deserves his spot as the Demon Vice Commander. The premise with the cursed sword is a bit silly, not going to lie but somehow, it all works together? There were many emotional, funny and badass moments in this arc, ngl. I still get goosebumps when I remember how Sougo killed all those traitors or Hijikata's speech near the end in which he included tons of anime references. Even when the sword messed with his brain, he still fought it with everything he had and his speech was very touching although hilarious.
Other than the three of them, of course I have to mention Itou, Takasugi and Bansai. First of all, Itou was a very interesting character and I related a lot to him. I've also found myself looking down at others and have justified my loneliness based on similar criteria to his. It's easy to go down such a road and so Itou's story hit me right in the feels. He is such a tragic figure who only realizes his faults at the very end when it's too late. Still, the ending his comrades gave him got me asking who cut onions.
On the other hand, Takasugi was AMAZING in this arc! He appeared for only two scenes yet they were both pretty iconic imo. His dialogue with Itou showcased why Takasugi is such a charismatic person. He is not someone who only knows how to fight well but someone who is particularly insightful and good at reading others. Like I said, I related to Itou so the things he told him really affected me and made me reconsider my own life a bit and see things in a more positive light.
A final thing I wanna mention about this arc is Bansai and more specifically his relationship to Takasugi. One would assume that their relationship is that of leader and subordinate YET, the way Bansai talks back to him when they discuss how the mission went, sheds a different light to it. Takasugi seems to value and respect his opinion and treats him as an equal, while Bansai seems comfortable enough around him to call him by his first name. Their relationship is very balanced in terms of power and intellect and that is something I really liked!
2. Episode 210-214 Four Devas Arc
This is my second favorite arc in Gintama even though I finished it less than a week ago. Through it we learn of the story of Kabukicho and Otose, who always seemed like a very intriguing and interesting character to me. We'd only heard bits and bits about her husband and how she met Gintoki but this arc perfectly shows why she was so keen on taking him in; because to her, Gin was just like her childhood friend Jirocho. Unlike Housen, I really liked Jirocho as a character. Honestly, Otose, him and her husband could very well have a spinoff of their own, they were that interesting and well written to me. Then we had Birabirabirabirako who was adorable although HIGHKEY a psycho. Somehow cute psycho gingers are my weakness so I couldn't hate her even though she got a bit annoying towards the end but hey, can't blame her! She grew up without a father and to her, it was as if he never cared about her.
Notable moments of this arc were: The cemetery fight scene between Gin and Jirocho (HE DIDN'T SAY A SINGLE WORD, I WAS O_O during the entire scene), their teamup against Kada and Harusame near the end, Kabukicho residents uniting to help out Otose and Yorozuya and of course, the final scene between Jirocho and his daughter.
"I have been called boss, warrior and many other names, but I have given them up. I am the father of Pirako Chin, Jirocho."
Words cannot describe how much I loved this moment. He had achieved so much during these years yet he gave up all of his titles to reconcile with his daughter and be her father. He goes as far as to introduce himself to her because after all these years, they barely knew each other! idk, I really liked Jirocho and he is one of my favorite antagonists of the show. Even though Kada turned out to be the actual antagonist but ANYWAYS!
And my number 1, most favorite Gintama arc so far that I'll probably rewatch over and over again until my eyes bleed iiiiiiis.... *drum roll*
Episode 58-61 Benizakura Arc
Who could have seen that one coming, am I right?
Sigh. This arc is amazing to me and will forever be one of my most favorite anime arcs of all times. It's not just about the arc itself, no, it's about the HYPE! Before Benizakura, I wasn't even interested in Takasugi but the way he was teased in the ending and all those small teasers hinting at his return, made me watch the previous episodes in like a day. I was dying to see him, I was literally foaming and honestly, although I've had characters I've liked in other shows, no one ever managed to capture my attention the way he did in the Shura song. And so, a new love story was created and all that jazz LMAO but anyways, let's more to the arc itself.
Everyone had their moment in it, from characters like Gintoki and Kagura who are expected to be great, to characters like Shinpachi and Otae who don't get as much glory. It was the perfect mix of action comedy and had some mystery/thriller vibes to it with the whole Zura/Nizou thing. Also we got to see Elizabeth in a pretty active role for once, other than just the comedic sidekick to Katsura.
Speaking of Katsura, S H O R T H A I R Z U R A. Enough said.
And, of course, I can't not include Kiheitai. We had seen a bit of Bansai and Nizou before but we got introduced to them properly as well as Matako and Takechi who are two characters I really like. (every time I see Takechi, I get tears in my eyes, he is simply hilarious). Although it's not that evident in this arc, KIheitai are basically Takasugi's own Yorozuya and seeing how there is an anti Joui faction that actively does things to oppose the Amanto and the Bakufu, was very interesting. Like yeah, we have Katsura, but he doesn't do that much terrorism nowadays. Takasugi and the Kiheitai is what you'd expect from rebels. And here is where I'd like to also note that despite the fact that Takasugi is a serious character and all that, his crew members seem to be on the comedic side of things which I do find hilarious. It's as if he is a magnet for funny/'stupid' characters, if you consider his relationship to Joui 4 and his Kiheitai.
Tbh, there is so much to be said about this arc. There are flashbacks between Joui 4, we get to see a bit into Takasugi's agenda and why he does what he does, plus we see the difference between him and Katsura as rebels. Katsura started on the more extreme side of things yet after spending more time with Gintoki, he goes milder. Him and Takasugi have the same type of goals and ideals, however their means to achieve that are completely different. They had the same experiences, yet both of them got shaped so differently and yeah, idk, Benizakura is just great because it hypes the entire plot of Gintama. It's the appetizer to a hell of a meal and you can tell from every single scene in it. Both the movie and the episodes were amazing and although I loved Gintama before Benizakura, this arc is the biggest milestone for me as a watcher. It redefined my standards lmao.
funnily enough I realize how I spoke about Takasugi, Katsura and the others, but I never went into the actual plot of this arc. OOPS! The story of the sword and the two siblings is interesting and nice, but it serves as an excuse imo to finally bring Takasugi back into the show and include him to the story. It's a big irony that the main plot of this arc ends up being its backdrop, but with such an interesting character such as him, such things are bound to happen.
Yes, I went into a lot of detail regarding this and considering the whole show from the first episode up to episode 215 took a shit ton of time. I could have easily given a simple answer but I wanted to review them properly, mainly for myself, I guess. Anyways, I hope that if you read all these random ramblings, they weren't too boring, and that for your sake I highlighted the episode just in case you don't feel like reading walls of text LMAO.

revisiting the rokkaku arc (an analysis)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Listen, I will always love rokkaku arc for the sougo-focus and shippy reasons. In the same way, the Gintama Wiki says Sougo has only ever apologized to two women, Mitsuba and Kagura (though I’m a bit doubtful on this since he casually apologizes to people more or less, Kagura’s was in between a gag and serious, still hilarious though, sorry Sho-chan), I think he has only ever used keigo (polite speech) for Mitsuba, and Kagura. Though in Kagura’s case, it was after threats, but that’s it, that’s their literal dynamic. And this whole interaction is again just funny to me because rather than a wolf, Kagura has the guts to treat Sougo like a damn puppy.
But in all seriousness though. Sougo is always blank-faced or evil-faced. In Hijikata’s words, it’s as if he has no weaknesses. Whenever he interacts with any other character, he almost always comes out on top. Meanwhile, his sweet side is only reserved for Kondou and Mitsuba, and yet at the same time, interactions with Kagura have him shedding that blank mask. He gets casually annoyed like when he was a kid, when emotions would show more often on his face as compared to the deadpan face he dons on now (part of me thinks he became even more deadpan when Mitsuba died). You can see him get angry, and it’s always a tie between him and Kagura. If he embarrasses Kagura, she gets him back.
In this one conversation, Kagura says she hates him, but acknowledges his skill. More than that she cuts to the truth of the matter. She’s confident in saying that he’s not a murderer, so why is he pretending to be one? She wants him to tell the truth, not just for Kirie’s sake, but for his sake as well. For all that she says she hates him, the truth outs and instead shows her concern for him. (Which Sougo calls out-of-character for her; this later gets paralleled when Kagura calls him out-of-character for trying to say goodbye during the Farewell Shinsengumi arc. In conclusion, they’re both tsunderes ffs.) And for Sougo’s part, because Kagura isn’t someone he can easily intimidate, because she’s so annoying that he can’t easily shut her out, he ends up giving away pieces of the truth. This is a secret he’s kept for over two years, but one way or the other, he opens up to Kagura.
*Also I just really love the fact that he calls her ‘ojou-san’, even if mockingly, instead of his usual ‘komusume’ or ‘gaki’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the same way, I think Kagura may be the only (?) woman (besides Mitsuba of course), that he’s given his gratitude to. Again for shippy reasons, I can’t believe they’re talking about how a woman’s heart easily changes, in this case Kagura’s heart. It’s serious fanfic fuel. Because in the same way, Sougo is opening up, Kagura’s opinion toward him also slowly changes. (I also love how between the both of them, Sougo is almost always the tsukkomi, which rarely happens otherwise.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this conversation is just so important. Sougo of course has the Shinsengumi. Even with Hijikata, and then later on with Gintoki, he shows a bit of vulnerability. But with Kagura now, he’s quite honest. He’s openly showing his vulnerability. And Kagura never exploits that weakness.
This, to me, is a really important aspect of their bond, shipping or otherwise. Because this conversation ties so well to the Shogun Assasination arc, and the Farewell Shinsengumi arc. Through this conversation, Kagura gets to know more about the Sadist, what makes him tick, what’s important to him. He’s not just a little shit, but someone with his own insecurities that he tries to fight against to protect what’s important. And Kagura can respect that, but more than that, Kagura is the person to reassure him about those insecurities. For all that Sougo admits he’s a killer, Kagura instead calls him a softie who can’t even stand the mere sight of a girl’s tears. This ties so well to when Kagura reassures Sougo much later on that Soyo didn’t hate him or wasn’t afraid of him.
But I disagree with Sougo when he says a ‘kid’ like Kagura wouldn’t understand. Because Kagura is an unbelievably intuitive person, and I love that so much about her character.
Kagura shies away from killing because she doesn’t want to lose to herself, and Sougo for his part probably sees her as someone clean or pure, and therefore someone who won’t be able to understand him, though it’s not her fault. Kids are supposed to be innocent after all. The Shinsengumi are supposed to dirty their hands so the innocent won’t have to. But that’s absolutely wrong. Kagura has Kamui as a brother. And though she shies away from killing, she absolutely understands what it means to protect something. And as someone who constantly fights to win against herself, Kagura is the one who can reassure ‘killers’ like Sougo, Kamui, and Nobume.
Sougo for his part, despite his reservations and his preconceptions about roles, still ends up unleashing his burdens to a ‘kid’ anyway. I guess in that aspect, Kagura is really an intriguing existence for Sougo. She’s not a fellow officer like Nobume whose hands are expected to get dirty. She’s not a villain like Kamui who he’s expected to defeat. She’s supposed to be part of the people he protects, a civilian, and yet he fights seriously against her, never underestimating her. By his own definition, she’s part of the people he’s supposed to get his hands dirty for, and yet despite his propensity to handle his problems himself, Kagura with all her bullheaded stubbornness manages to be there for him anyway, to support him one way or another. Maybe Sougo always thought he had to do it alone because he was the strongest, but he can’t pull that crap with Kagura because Kagura is as, if not stronger than him. Kagura doesn’t fall into a neat box or category for him. He protects and fights her, while she fights and supports him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
LISTEN, I WILL ALWAYS BE BITTER MITSUBA DIED. This arc also subtly ties with the Mitsuba arc I think. For one, Sougo mentions his aneue, although for gag reasons, Kagura still gets to find out that Sougo had an older sister who died.
For all that we joke that Sougo’s gag proposal answers Kagura’s wish to never have an empty house again, Kagura’s statements here answers Mitsuba’s words when she said Sougo was always alone because he was ‘selfish, obstinate, and stubborn’. I will forever and always be bitter that we didn’t get to see more of Mitsuba. She would have been reassured and unbelievably happy that Sougo despite the way he is, is no longer alone. It’s not even just his brothers in the Shinsengumi, but rather for all his faults, there are other idiots like him willing to fight for him, support him, and protect him. In Kagura’s words in the manga, ‘idiots travel in packs’. I just can’t even imagine what would have happened had Mitsuba met Kagura. I think somehow, she would have been deeply grateful for her.
I love Kagura so much. That care and sensitivity, not just towards Kirie, but also towards Sougo. She knows him so well, despite all of his efforts to guard himself and hide. All of their interactions thus far lead her to confidently say that he’d be happiest with someone there to fight and trying to kill him (and personally for me, I think he’s happiest when fighting Kagura, see: post-timeskip).
In other words, this was a great arc for character insights and relationship building, not just for Sougo, but also Kagura. It’s not even for entirely shippy reasons. That mutual understanding and constant support amidst that outward dislike (they’re tsunderes, I tell you) is just another thing that makes their relationship and interactions so compelling. For all that Kagura knows him so well, Sougo proves that he also knows her just as much as the Feigned Illness arc and Post-Timeskip arc would show.
And how many chapters and arcs later, it’s still Kagura who gives him the reassurance he needs, and with character development marching on, he even finds it in himself to be vulnerable for once and actively seek her out for that exact same reassurance that only she can give.
I just really love mutually hella supportive ships. And it’s for these reasons, that I really think they’re perfect for each other. I honestly think Kagura is a special existence for Sougo. She’s the recipient for so many exceptions and out-of-character moments for him, that I think even after the manga has ended, no other girl for him will do.

A Gintama chapter a day keeps the ending away...Lesson 272
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MY FAVORITE MOMENTS IN LESSON 272: (I really really love this arc)
Tumblr media
Kagura’s poor leg is like a magnet for bullets.
Tumblr media
Shipping aside, I loved all the conversations Okita and Kagura had in this arc because they have so much in common and should completely understand each other considering they’re both kids who are close in age who have amazing abilities who were forced to grow up quickly.
Tumblr media
BADASS.
Tumblr media
This arc might as well had been named “OKITA IS AWESOME” arc.
Tumblr media
I enjoy seeing Sougo kill people probably a little too much.
Tumblr media
I also enjoy seeing sword versus bullets scenes, where the sword wins, a little too much. I will never tire of how cool it looks.
Tumblr media
Again, love how much Kagura understands him.
Tumblr media
Just...this.
Tumblr media
The cavalry arriving. I kinda really liked Shipachi’s look.
Tumblr media
MORE awesome cavalry! Bros got Sougo’s back!
Tumblr media
Okita’s expression just gives me the giggles.
Tumblr media
I wish we got to see what Kirie wrote to him, but I also loved how we had to just guess what she said (probably some form of thank you) and the fact that his expression didn’t change at all, even though he was happy enough to up his sadism level right after by loading up on Tabasco cakes.
SHIPS TALLY:
OkiKagu: this arc could have also been renamed "OKIKAGU IS REAL” arc because man was the air THICK with OkiKagu love. They’re so FREAKING adorable together why are they not already dating?? They should have started dating right after this arc, dammit.
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: Gintama is not only about shipping. Gintama is hilarious, clever, exciting, poignant, heart-breaking, loving, brilliant, and just so freaking amazing.  It is only due to Sorachi-sama’s generosity that I can enjoy Gintama on yet another level, the shippy level, and I am forever grateful for that. GINTAMA IS LIFE AND LOVE.

🕴 and 😳 for sougo!
I was watching Rokkaku arc with some friends last night, so I'm going to specifically use screenshots from that!
🕴Post a screenshot of your f/o small in the distance/the background of a shot.
Tumblr media
I really love the opening cake shop scene because of how sweetly he interacts with the cake lady ^-^ It actually reminds me of the old man who feeds stray cats in Correspondence arc, since it's implied Sougo spends a lot of time with him. I really love when we're able to see that relaxed/friendly side of him too!
Tumblr media
😳 Post a screenshot of your f/o that flusters you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I sent these images to my friends like 5 times last night I am not immune to fight scenes
