Trigger Warnings: Angst, physical abuse of a kid - mentioned, smoke, demon dummoning, Virgil is a hust kiddo in need of a hug and love, tell me if I forgot something!

A/N: So, I underestimated my own capability to make something turn angsty. I'd thought this would just be a fun shirt drabble, but halfway through, I accidentally turned it angsty. I apologise for that. Hope you have a good read, though.

You’re Not The Devil!

Roman groaned as he felt the tug of another mortal trying to summon the devil. Already?! He’d just come back from one!

With a huff, he dawned his red and gold cape once more and rose up to the mortal realm.

Lots of red smoke and some coughing later, he stood in a dark room, staring boringly down at a teenager.

The kid stared at Roman for about 10 minutes, not believing his eyes that he’d actually summoned something, like most other mortals when they tried. Roman just cocked an eyebrow at him, looking very unimpressed.

The kid slowly started to regain his barrings and took in the sight that was Roman. “You look… very different from what I thought you would.”

Roman looked offended. “What did you expect, kid? Large horns, red eyes, tail, big bulk with no brains? HA! As if!” Roman huffed and swung his cape for dramatic effects, looking around the room. He then sighed. Another one indeed.

The kid looked very confused but seemed to be putting two and two together. “Wait a minute, you’re not the devil!” A smart one. Been a long time since Roman had to deal with a smart one.

“True, I’m just the guy he hired to deal with emo brats like you who think selling your soul is a good idea,” Roman snarked back. He turned around to face the kid and the anger he’d inevitably face from him, like always.

The kid… looked very small. Fragile. “Oh. Okay. I see. Well, um…” he said in the most muted way and looked around a bit, lost. Something was up. Roman took a closer look at him and what he noticed was something he did very much not like.

Roman slowly made his way to the kid, sitting down on the bed he’d situated himself on during the silence. Gone was the dramatic aura surrounding him, replaced with a serious and solemn one. “I usually don’t do this, but what happened, kid? To make you want to do this?” he asked in a subdued and not unkind voice.

The boy hunched in on himself, averting his gaze to his feet. “You’ve probably already guessed it if you ask about it.” When Roman didn’t respond but kept looking at him, he sighed. “I don’t want to be here anymore, but I don’t wanna die, either, you know? If I run away, they’re just gonna find me and punish me even worse.” He revealed his arms as he spoke. They were full of bruises: some old, some very recent. But all bad.

Roman was furious. He didn’t show it, but inside, he was fuming with rage at the kid’s parents. He placed a hand on the boy’s arm carefully. “Look, the guy downstairs, he isn’t a bad guy like people make him out to be, but even so, he can’t help you with this. However, though it’s very controversial as I’m not actually a demon, angel or anything of the sorts, I could help you, if you wish for me to do so.” Roman had never before been more serious about anything in his life. Sure, he’d have to explain why he brought home a mortal kid to his housemates. Still, he had a feeling both Patton and Logan and the others would understand this decision.

The kid looked up, tears in his eyes, smeared black eyeshadow beneath them, and held an expression of disbelief on his face. “R-really?”

“Really, kid. I live in a separate dimension with my mates and brother and his mate. It’ll be a short explanation, but I know they’ll welcome you with open arms into our family. But I’ll only bring you with explicit consent. If you are not 100 per cent sure, I cannot bring you there, okay?” Roman asked softly. The kid nodded quickly.

“I’m sure. Please, take me away from here! I don’t have anyone here either way. I don’t have any friends, and everyone in my family sees me as a liability and a toy. Nobody would miss me, and I wouldn’t miss anyone,” he pleaded, the tears falling down his cheeks.

Roman then stood up, faced the kid with an outstretched hand. “Well, then. Let’s go, shall we?” The kid took his hand slowly and was softly hoisted up to a standing position by Roman. The kid was light as a feather; like he hadn’t eaten anything in days! “My name is Roman, by the way. May I know what yours is?”

The kid moved closer to Roman on unsteady legs, feeling a lot safer than he ever had in his life. “Virgil,” he whispered. “My name is Virgil.”

“What a beautiful name, Virgil. How old are you, if I may ask?” Roman whispered back.

“I-I’m 15.” Virgil looked up at Roman with mat eyes. This kid had seen the worst in the world but still wanted to live. Roman marvelled at and admired his strength. Oh, Patton would be all over him with love and affection for sure!

“Well then, Virgil, close your eyes and take a deep breath,” Roman softly instructed as he closed his arms around him. Virgil did just that, and the next second, they were pulled down, down into smoke and nothingness.

A minute later, and they appeared in a bed of flowers Virgil hadn’t seen before. In the distance was a large house, structure ancient. “Wow.” Virgil let of his breath is a sigh at the beautiful sight.

Two men were headed their way. Both had glasses, but their attitude and clothes were the polar opposite of each other. “Logan, Patton! I’d like for you to greet our newest family member: Virgil,” Roman greeted the newcomers with a smile and grand gesture with the arm not keeping Virgil grounded.

Virgil hid behind Roman slightly, giving a half-wave. The shorter one gasped slightly as carefully rushed to them, obviously good at reading body language. “Hey there, kiddo. My name is Patton. The serious-looking one over there is Logan.” Patton looked up at Roman, having a silent conversation about the events prior. “We’ll keep you safe here, okay? C’mon, let’s show you our home and get you comfortable in your room,” he half-whispered, stretching his hand out for Virgil to take.

Virgil looked up at Roman, who gave the it’s-okay nod, before taking Patton’s hand letting himself be dragged away carefully by Patton.

“We have to have a talk about this later, Roman,” Logan said once they were out of hearing range. “This is highly unprofessional. However, from your serious demeanour, I respect this decision.”

“Thank you, Logan. He’s not like the rest. There’s just something about him…” Roman trailed off. Life from here was definitely going to be an adventure.

The Ninth Gate

Though director Roman Polanski is a horrific figure himself, this 1999 neo-noir horror film, The Ninth Gate is superb. Thirty years after Rosemary’s Baby, Polanski conjured the devil once again and injected it with some of the pulp from his noir classic Chinatown in a movie that finds Johnny Depp as a man in Satanic Detective mode. Depp is a classic book authenticator hired to authenticate De Umbrarum Regis Novum Portis (The Nine Doors To the Kingdom of Shadows), a book believed by cultists capable of raising Satan to Earth.

The Ninth Gate doesn’t provide cheap thrills; it tightens the suspense like a noose. Polanski subtly creates an uneasy atmosphere using minimal effects. The director knows where evil lives and lets the settings and sound make the invitations with subliminal references to recognizable horror and cinematic danger, using framing and music similarly to Stanley Kubrick. The Ninth Gate packages its scares with classy style that the characters deliver with sexily provocative intelligence. Dean Corso may be Johnny Depp’s greatest spiritual transformation, from odious to ultimate evil and the audience cheers on his descent, happy to ride with him straight to hell.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Perhaps the world’s first horror film and a go-to example of early German Expressionist filmmaking, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari has been unsettling audiences for over a century.

The film’s main story centers on two young friends, Francis and Alan (Friedrich Feher and Hans Heinrich von Twardowski), who, while jockeying for the affections of Jane (Lil Dagover), visit a local traveling carnival. There they take in the act of the mysterious, top-hatted and wild-haired Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss). As they watch, Caligari awakens his somnambulist subject, Cesare (the great Conrad Veidt), who under hypnosis answers questions from the audience. When Alan jokingly asks when he will die, Cesare responds “Before dawn.” We’ll let you guess the rest.

The film isn’t remembered much for its story, but for its arresting visual style, featuring painted backdrops that make the entire production feel like a fever dream. The painted townscape is filled with curved and pointed buildings teetering at dangerous angles, almost as if they were alive and shrieking. Roads twist and spiral to nowhere. The perspectives are deliberately mismatched and inconsistent, with the props and sets sometimes being too large for the characters, and others too small. The result is a transgressive, deeply influential film that has been unsettling audiences for over 100 years.

The Exorcist III

Based on his 1983 novel Legion, writer-director William Peter Blatty’s Exorcist III arrived 17 years after William Friedkin’s The Exorcist. Despite the still-looming pop culture presence of the original, The Exorcist III is sneakily the most interesting film in the series. Less a horror movie than a psychological thriller with supernatural and spiritual overtones, The Exorcist III takes place 17 years after the events of the first film, and with no reference whatsoever made to the events in the second. It finds Lt. Kinderman confronted with the apparent reappearance of two figures from his past who had supposedly died. The first is father Damien Karras (Jason Miller), who had died after bouncing down an endless flight of steps while performing an exorcism in the original movie, and the Gemini Killer, a serial killer loosely based on the Zodiac Killer that had been executed 17 years prior. However, there’s been a new string of murders around town carrying all the hallmarks of the Gemini.

While the studio famously mangled Blatty’s original cut of the film, there’s still a lot to like here, including a terrifying performance from Brad Dourif. Blatty is fantastic at creating dread-inducing atmosphere and has a keen attention to character and detail. It may not be as exciting as the original, but it’s a smart-slow burn film worthy of the Exorcist mantle.

The Devil’s Rejects

An homage to sleazy ‘70s C-movies, Rob Zombie’s sequel to House of 1,000 Corpses will leave you in the need of a shower, but it’s delightfully demented and the musician turned filmmaker’s finest effort. The shock-fest finds the Firefly clan, Otis (Bill Moseley), Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie) and Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) – on the run from die-hard determined sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe). What unfolds is a nasty thrill ride full of twists, turns, and more gore than most audiences are comfortable with. How Zombie still manages to make such repulsive content entertaining, how he manages to get you to almost root for the despicable Firefly clan, is inexplicable magic trick, but indebted to Zombie’s use of black humor and deep knowledge of genre conventions that he sometimes subverts, but often gleefully leans into.

Train to Busan

The overused and increasingly predictable zombie genre got a shot in the arm with Train to Busan, a South Korean film from director Yeon Sang-ho about a young father desperately attempting to get his little daughter to her mother via train as a zombie pandemic breaks out all around them. Even if it veered close to outright sentimentality at times, Train to Busan differed from most of the films and TV shows we’ve seen in this genre due to its genuine bond of love between its main characters, and the flickers of empathy and humanity found therein.

And on a technical level, Yeon crafted his film with a kinetic energy that had been missing from the genre as of late. Train to Busan was not just a monster hit in its native land but amassed an international following as well, along with critical acclaim across the board. It’s easy to see why given the film’s well-drawn characters, subtle social commentary (some on the train feel they are more worthy of survival than others) and frightening action sequences that add up to a thrilling and emotionally powerful ride.

God did not make death, nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the living. For he fashioned all things that they might have being; and the creatures of the world are wholesome, and there is not a destructive drug among them nor any domain of the netherworld on earth, for justice is undying. For God formed man to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made him.

But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world, and they who belong to his company experience it.

Gospel: Mark 5: 21-43,

When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed close to the sea. One of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came forward. Seeing him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, “My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.” He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him.

There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew worse. She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak. She said, “If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.” Immediately her flow of blood dried up. She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who has touched my clothes?” But his disciples said to Jesus, “You see how the crowd is pressing upon you, and yet you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” And he looked around to see who had done it. The woman, realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction.”

While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official’s house arrived and said, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?” Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. So he went in and said to them, “Why this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.” And they ridiculed him. Then he put them all out. He took along the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was. He took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. At that they were utterly astounded. He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat.

**Meditation:

Do you approach the Lord Jesus with expectant faith or with skeptical doubt? People in desperate or helpless circumstances were not disappointed when they sought Jesus out. What drew them to Jesus? Was it hope for a miracle or a word of comfort in their affliction? What did the elderly woman who had suffered miserably for twelve years expect Jesus to do for her? And what did a grieving father expect Jesus to do for his beloved daughter who was at the point of death? Jesus gave hope where there seemed to be no human cause for it because his hope was directed to God. He spoke words of hope to the woman (Take heart, daughter!) to ignite the spark of faith in her (your faith has made you well!).

Ephrem the Syrian (306-373 AD), an early church Scripture scholar and author of hymns and commentaries, reflected on the miracle of the woman who was healed of her flow of blood:

"Glory to you, hidden Son of God, because your healing power is proclaimed through the hidden suffering of the afflicted woman. Through this woman whom they could see, the witnesses were enabled to behold the divinity that cannot be seen. Through the Son's own healing power his divinity became known. Through the afflicted women's being healed her faith was made manifest. She caused him to be proclaimed, and indeed was honored with him. For truth was being proclaimed together with its heralds. If she was a witness to his divinity, he in turn was a witness to her faith... He saw through to her hidden faith, and gave her a visible healing."

Jesus also gave supernatural hope to a father who had just lost a beloved child. It took considerable courage and risk for the ruler of a synagogue to openly go to Jesus and to invite the scorn of his neighbors and kin. Even the hired mourners laughed scornfully at Jesus. Their grief was devoid of any hope. Nonetheless, Jesus took the girl by the hand and delivered her from the grasp of death. Peter Chrysologus (400-450 AD), an early church father who was renowned for his preaching at Ravena, comments on this miracle:

"This man was a ruler of the synagogue, and versed in the law. He had surely read that while God created all other things by his word, man had been created by the hand of God. He trusted therefore in God that his daughter would be recreated, and restored to life by that same hand which, he knew, had created her... He [Jesus] who laid hands on her to form her from nothing, once more lays hands upon her to reform her from what had perished."

In both instances we see Jesus' personal concern for the needs of others and his readiness to heal and restore life. In Jesus we see the infinite love of God extending to each and every individual as he gives freely and wholly of himself to each person he meets. Do you approach the Lord with confident expectation that he will hear your request and act?

Lord Jesus, you love each of us individually with a unique and personal love. Touch my life with your saving power, heal and restore me to fullness of life. Help me to give wholly of myself in loving service to others.

7 Strategies for Building a Psalm 91 HouseSeptember 12, 2019

When you first move into a home, great care is taken to situate the furniture, hang family pictures on the walls, and decorate each room. A house becomes a home with time and love invested into establishing a comfortable space.

But what about the spiritual side of your home? Does being a Christian mean your home will automatically be blessed and protected? Unfortunately, the answer is no. So, what can you do to ensure your home is a safe place for your family? You go to God’s promises in His Word.

Promises of protection abound throughout the Bible, but there is one place where you can find all of them gathered together in a single, power-packed passage—and that’s in Psalm 91. Psalm 91 is God’s covenant for divine protection. It covers every danger—sickness, disease, assault, crime, tornadoes, fire and any other threat to your safety and well-being.

The good news is you can live in a fortress of Psalm 91 protection and create an environment in your home that makes the devil flee. But like any of the promises of God, you have a responsibility to receive the promises of Psalm 91 by faith.

Below are seven faith strategies for Building a Psalm 91 house.

1. Fill Your Atmosphere“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” –Psalm 91:1

We live in two atmospheres—one is physical and the other spiritual. An atmosphere is defined as “a pervading or surrounding influence or spirit, general mood or environment.” In Genesis 1, the earth’s atmosphere was dark and empty—until God spoke. It didn’t automatically take on the spiritual atmosphere of God—He had to fill the atmosphere with what He wanted to occupy that space.

The same is true for us. We have a spiritual atmosphere in our homes that we can energize with the power of the Holy Spirit, or leave blank for anything or anyone to permeate. The latter is much too dangerous. If we fail to play offense, we’ll end up playing defense and wearing ourselves down with unnecessary trials.

How can you fill your atmosphere? Try these simple, but powerful, ideas at home:

Load an MP3 player with the entire Bible. Connect it to small desktop speakers and place it in the main living space of your home. Set it to ‘repeat’ and let it run on low volume 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, the Word of God is being spoken into the atmosphere of your home!

2. Protect Your Atmosphere“He is my refuge and my fortress….” –Psalm 91:2, NKJV

Romans 12:2 tells us not to be conformed to this world and its ways. Media choices like television shows, movies and music that promote fear, worry, infidelity, divorce, anger and sexual immorality oppose the Word of God and weaken the protection around you, your home and your family.

When you take refuge in God, you remove yourself from the influence of those things that are not of God—the voice of the world. Ask God, according to Psalm 119:37, to turn your eyes from worthless things and help you purge your atmosphere of all that is not of Him.

3. Deal With Wrong Spirits Immediately“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him…” Psalm 91:14, NKJV

Have you ever walked into a room and felt tension so thick, you wanted to run the other way? A wrong spirit was most certainly to blame. James 3:16 says, “For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there” (NKJV).

When you set your love upon the Lord, you will desire to love others as He loves them, but if you step out of love, you are stepping into Satan’s territory. Strife, unforgiveness, rebellion and pride are all tools the devil uses to come into your home and stir up trouble. His purpose? To divide and destroy your home.

It can be very costly to allow the “luxury” of a few quarrels or to permit your children to rebel and talk back to you, because when you do, you are inviting a wrong spirit to operate in your home. On the other hand, the power of agreement is a supernatural, miracle-working power!

So, determine to stop any attitudes or situations that cause destruction. When any wrong spirit tries to take up residence in your home, deal with it immediately. Say, “Spirit of strife, unforgiveness, pride and rebellion, get out of my home in the Name of Jesus!”

4. Anoint Your Home with Oil“A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you.” –Psalm 91:7, NKJV

The world around you—even fellow believers—seem to struggle with constant sickness and tragedy. But under God’s promise of protection, those evils will not touch you. When you stand in faith for Psalm 91 protection, you will see those around you falling, but that evil won’t come near you.

One way to appropriate your faith for supernatural protection is to anoint your home with oil. Oil represents the power of the Holy Spirit and is a symbol of faith in God’s ability to cleanse and make holy. It is an act of consecrating your home to Him.

To do this, anoint the frame of every door in your home. As you do, pray and invite the Holy Spirit to fill every inch of your home in every room. Pray that only His will be done and that everything that is said and done in your home will be pleasing to Him.

“And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.” –Isaiah 10:27, NKJV

5. Draw a Blood Line“No evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home.” –Psalm 91:10

There is power in the blood of Jesus! In 1 Peter 1:18-19, we are told that we were redeemed from the curse with the precious blood of Christ. So, when the devil tries to nose his way into our lives, we overcome him by the blood of the Lamb (Revelation 12:11).

How do we use the blood? In Luke 10:19, Jesus says, “I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy.” So, we plead the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ over our families, our property and our possessions.

A minister and his wife were conducting meetings in a large church that was having a great impact on the kingdom of God. The devil had become infuriated at the success of the meetings, so he told the minister he had put rabies on the foxes in the woods adjoining their property and intended to kill his children.

The minister said, “Devil, you are a liar! You can’t kill my children.” Immediately, he went home and gathered in agreement with other believers. They agreed in prayer and by faith drew a blood line of protection around the property.

A week later, lying on the boundary of his land, were five dead foxes. They had dropped dead when they tried to cross the blood line!

In prayer and faith, you can plead the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ and draw a blood line around your property, your vehicles, your children’s schools and your workplace.

6. Dispatch Your Angels“He will order His angels to protect you wherever you go.” –Psalm 91:11

Did you know that one of the ways God carries out your deliverance and your protection is through angels? You literally have angels at your service.

You could hire a hundred natural men for your security, but they would be limited by natural things. Not so with angels. Angels operate under the authority of Jesus (1 Peter 3:22), and one of their jobs is ministering to believers. They are real. They are powerful. And if you are a believer, they are a vital part of your life.

So, dispatch angels around you, your family members, your home, your vehicles and any building you walk into. Say, “Ministering angels, I send you forth to protect my family according to Psalm 91.” Then, expect it!

7. Pray and Speak the Word“His truth shall be your shield….” Psalm 91:4, NKJV

The Word of God is a weapon, a two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), so when we pray the Word, we pray right on target.

How can you pray for protection? Pray Psalm 91 over your home and family. Commit it to memory, and make it a part of your heart and spirit. Hang a copy somewhere in your home as a reminder of God’s promise of protection. You can even pray something as simple as, “I pray Psalm 91 protection over my home and family today.”

Put these seven strategies to work in your life and home, and watch the power of Psalm 91 build a fortress of protection that cannot be touched! The Word of God is a powerful force, and the devil is no match for it! God’s Word always produces fruit and accomplishes everything it says (Isaiah 55:11). Trust in God and rest in the protection and blessing only He can provide!

“LEGACY OF THE TIMEWALKERS”

Two time traveling heroes from the distant future: Matthew and Alexander built a sophisticated Time Machine hundreds of years ago, to arrive in the year 2099! Commissioned by GOD and His Son Jesus Christ. The brave and intelligent men were determined to stop Tiberius Nicholai Dukain, a ruthless tyrant known as “the Antichrist”, and his henchman and false prophet Ivar Turok, from setting off a nuclear bomb to annihilate the entire world! But their mission was not finished yet, the security alarms were reactivated, and they had to escape Dukain’s army, get safely out of Germany, and expose the Antichrist’s evil plans to the world! Fortunately, Matthew and Alexander was prepared to do just that, they quickly activated the armored gear installed in their time traveling suits, to shoot back at the guards, and teleported back inside their secured army base at Area 51! Matt immediately downloaded incriminating files, and Alex’s video recorded data of Dukain’s nuclear bomb and the enemy’s plans to annihilate the world to the social media. Soon the United Nations deployed military forces from various countries to apprehend Tiberius Dukain, and destroy his evil regime in Europe forever! After the top secret operation was finally disclosed to the President of the United States, he promptly arranged a ceremony to honor and reward the two brave time traveling heroes: Matthew Gagston and Alexander Pope… But the President and his administration was unaware that Matt and Alex were the mysterious Witnesses of God! The Timewalkers (also known as “The Watchers”), were spies sent by God to spy out the land and to destroy Satan’s kingdom on earth, which included Europe and the United States of America! In time, both men earned military power and political influence by becoming valuable U.S. Government spies and Special Forces commandos. Alexander moved up the ranks and was reassigned as Director of the C.I.A., while Matthew was hired as the new Secretary of Defense. When the eight year term of Dr. Franklyn Victor Beckles, Jr., the second African American President of the United States ended, Matthew made his move in the upcoming Presidential Election of 3008, to run for President of the United States of America. God had blessed the men of God and given them favor in all the endeavors of their lives. Both men had married beautiful women and conceived many sons to carry on their family legacy, and their political ambitions to change the world and transform the United States from a country controlled by Satan, into a nation under God became an obsession for the Witnesses of God. Their main goal was to flush out and expose their hated enemy Satan, and bring down his political, economic, and religious establishment in America (which is an evil system that has existed since the day Adam and Eve was kicked out of the Garden of Eden), operated by the mysterious modern day satanic corporation called the Illuminati! This evil group of masterminds behind the world’s wars and atrocities, are men and women who are the descendants of the children of Satan. The Batman: Can a Superhero Movie Be Too Dark?

“What are you?” It’s a question posed to any self-respecting Batman in his first movie, and it’s one that always gets the same answer. “I’m Batman.” That’s the iconic bit Michael Keaton whispered in Batman (1989), and Christian Bale growled in Batman Begins (2005), each arriving in a movie that stunned audiences in its day. Yet those moments seem like child’s play when compared to Matt Reeves’ The Batman, a film that, despite only being 25 percent filmed, shocked fans during this weekend’s DC FanDome.

When Robert Pattinson’s Batman is asked “what the hell are you supposed to be?” he responds with a brutal, almost sadistic beating of the other party. Using the kind of violence that would be deemed excessive force if he were in blue instead of black, the Batman pummels the man into a puddle before gasping, almost to his own surprise, “I’m vengeance.”

This isn’t your father’s Batman. It isn’t even your Batman from five years ago.

Like new iterations before it, Reeves and Pattinson’s interpretation of Bruce Wayne crawls deeper into the abyss and the crime dramas it emulates, finding something more grotesque and unsettling than we’ve previously known… which makes it irresistible to adult comic book fans. Whereas Christopher Nolan had grand success with his epic interpretation of Batman, pulling as much from the sweeping moviemaking of David Lean as he did the chilly criminality of Michael Mann’s Heat, Reeves appears to be diving into something decidedly grittier and more unsettling. The Riddler-based crime scene at the beginning of the trailer, where a riddle accompanies a presumably mutilated corpse, recalls the neo noir fatalism of David Fincher’s Seven.

In fact during the DC FanDome panel, Reeves outright named Roman Polanski’s Chinatown as his “key” cinematic inspiration. That 1974 classic is a detective thriller in the mold of other 1940s and ‘50s film noirs, but in Chinatown the tropes were liberated by ‘70s cynicism. Thus the movie depicts a Los Angeles rotten to its core, and far beyond redemption. The downbeat and defeatist ending even confirms there is no salvation for anyone.

While it’s still early goings for The Batman, it would appear the new movie is leaning into that sentiment, making the hopeful optimism of saving Gotham City at the heart of Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy appear doomed, or at least naïve. Consider Reeves also said at the panel, “Where did Bruce’s family sit in that [citywide corruption]?” He’s teasing a third act revelation as crippling to Bruce’s belief in the system as the revelations that damned Jack Nicholson’s gumshoe and everyone he ever met in Chinatown.

But then that may be par for the course, with nearly every cinematic adaptation of Batman trying to justify its existence by being more ruthless, more sinister, and ultimately more cynical.

Treated as a beloved relic of ‘80s and ‘90s kids’ nostalgia today, when Tim Burton’s Batman opened in 1989, it stunned audiences with a black-clad superhero who brooded as much as he saved the day, and a performance by Jack Nicholson so nasty that his Joker was publicly dismissed by his predecessor, Caesar Romero. Keep in mind that in the late 1980s, Batman was still the subject of pop culture ridicule and camp thanks to Adam West’s 1960s television series, on which Romero played a harmless prankster in a purple suit.

Upon seeing Nicholson’s Joker, who killed people with a smile and electrocuted mobsters to death with a joy buzzer, Romero said Nicholson “was just so violent” and the movie was “dreary.”

Of course compared to Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar winning portrayals of the Clown Prince of Crime, Nicholson looks camp himself. But this showcases the creeping need for adults to darken their Gotham heroes and villains. The generation of parents who grew up with Adam West would revolt against Tim Burton’s stylized noir aesthetic in Batman and even grimmer Gothic fairy tale in Batman Returns (1992), with some parents protesting the second movie specifically and McDonald’s association with it via Happy Meals.

“Violence-loving adults may enjoy this film,” lamented one angry letter from a parent to The Los Angeles Times. “But why on Earth is McDonald’s pushing this exploitative movie through the sales of its so-called ‘Happy Meals?’ Has McDonald’s no conscience?”

Following the parent backlash to Batman Returns, Warner Bros. momentarily conceded the point and hired Joel Schumacher to make a pair of toyetic and Happy Meal-friendly superhero movies. But when that vision fizzled out, Christopher Nolan stepped in to make his groundbreaking superhero trilogy.

The film that coined the term “reboot,” Batman Begins eschewed the fantastical excesses of the Burton and Schumacher years, and revealed a strong allergy to anything camp. Nolan’s films were intended to be big old school Hollywood epics, with each having its own specific inspirations. On the whole though, they offered standalone action dramas that defied modern convention with an emphasis on in-camera stunts and somber-to-a-fault characterizations. Bale’s Batman even went about his crime fighting with the exacting vision of a campaign strategist, seeking to turn his Dark Knight persona into a political platform that would inspire Gotham to save itself.

And his villains, in their various forms, were allegorical stand-ins for all the anxieties facing Americans in the early 21st century: foreign terrorists scheming in the mountains; the lone gunman who just wants to watch the world burn; and a populist demagogue who would drag our institutions to collapse. That last one is eerily prophetic these days. At the time, however, it was all in service of an entertainment spectacle as big as James Bond or Michael Bay, but now filmed in dazzling IMAX photography.

Heath Ledger’s Joker was terrifying to many, but he was also a beloved figure for his seemingly supernatural ability to know and undermine everyone’s motivations and to speak with a forked tongue as seductive as the Devil. Feeling like a real-life monster, he could be scary to adults, unlike Nicholson’s Joker, but he was still a rock star as far as internet memes were concerned.

In other words, a far cry from what came later in Phoenix’s lonely and visibly unpleasant murderer, Arthur Fleck. But before Joker or Pattinson as The Batman, we got a nominally darker Batman than Nolan’s. As portrayed by Ben Affleck in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the Caped Crusader was now a deadened, self-righteous fascist who liked to prove his badassery by branding criminals with bat symbols and driving his Batmobile through someone’s skull. Nolan’s Gotham created the illusion of a grounded, grim reality, but Snyder’s was just grim: a humorless exercise in violence that appeals to a certain type of angsty teenage nerd. Nevertheless, Snyder recently insisted on Twitter that his vision of DC superheroes is “made for grownups.”

While I personally find the end result unconvincing in that regard, the desire for a more serious, “grownup” Batman is evident from Burton through Snyder, and now Reeves. Future generations who grew up with The Dark Knight Returns comics or Burton’s movies don’t feel the need to protest if a Batman movie isn’t made with Happy Meals in mind. In fact, they demand it—and revel when a Joker movie is so macabre and nihilistic that it creates misplaced anxiety about “These Times,” and wins Oscars for Best Actor and Best Original Score.

The results can be as exhilarating as The Dark Knight or as numbing as Batman v Superman, but both appear to benefit in appeal from fans who, after growing up with ostensibly serious versions of these characters, wanted to see that taken further into mature storytelling—which better justifies liking a child’s power fantasy.

This is not necessarily a bad thing: The Dark Knight and Logan remain my personal favorite superhero movies, likely in part because they renew inherently silly concepts with modern context and a deeper complexity. Matt Reeves appears to simply be going farther in this direction with The Batman, a film that may also be as far removed from the dry sense of humor of Bale’s Bruce Wayne as Affleck’s was. But judging by only a teaser trailer, it’s a movie so committed to its vision of Batman as a noir hero in a broken city, and not a blockbuster spectacle, that its director won’t need to tweet anyone that this is for grownups.

Seeing him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, "My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live." He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him.

And he looked around to see who had done it. The woman, realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth. He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction."

While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official's house arrived and said, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?" Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid; just have faith." He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. So he went in and said to them, "Why this commotion and weeping?

The child is not dead but asleep." And they ridiculed him. Then he put them all out. He took along the child's father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was. He took the child by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum," which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise!" The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. At that they were utterly astounded. He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat.

Two time traveling heroes from the distant future: Matthew and Alexander built a sophisticated Time Machine hundreds of years ago, to arrive in the year 2099! Commissioned by GOD and His Son Jesus Christ. Their mission was to locate the nuclear bomb in time before it explodes, and expose Dukain and Turok to the world. Ultimately, God was in complete control of the operation of the uncanny crusaders for justice. The Lord informed Matt and Alex where Dukain was hiding the weapon of mass destruction. Without time to spare, Matt and Alex leaped through their Time Machine, wearing their high tech suits, and teleporting inside the German Headquarters of the European Union, where Tiberius Dukain and his forces was located. Once they arrived inside the Antichrist’s fortress, they activated their invisible shields covering their suits to avoid detection by Dukain’s private army. The stealth heroes sneaked inside the hidden room, and disabling the security devices where the nuclear bomb was installed. Matt and Alex soon discovered Dukain’s bodyguards and their leader Ivar Turok, guarding the nuclear weapon and the device that triggers it! Trained in martial arts by U.S. Special Forces, the time walking commandos overpowered the henchmen, and immediately captured the dirty bomb and activating device. The two crusaders teleported the nuclear arsenal from Dukain’s secret room deep into outer space, and triggered the bomb on an uninhabited planet! The unsung heroes had saved the earth! But their mission was not finished yet, the security alarms were reactivated, and they had to escape Dukain’s army, get safely out of Germany, and expose the Antichrist’s evil plans to the world! Fortunately, Matthew and Alexander was prepared to do just that, they quickly activated the armored gear installed in their time traveling suits, to shoot back at the guards, and teleported back inside their secured army base at Area 51! Matt immediately downloaded incriminating files, and Alex’s video recorded data of Dukain’s nuclear bomb and the enemy’s plans to annihilate the world to the social media. Soon the United Nations deployed military forces from various countries to apprehend Tiberius Dukain, and destroy his evil regime in Europe forever! After the top secret operation was finally disclosed to the President of the United States, he promptly arranged a ceremony to honor and reward the two brave time traveling heroes: Matthew Gagston and Alexander Pope… But the President and his administration was unaware that Matt and Alex were the mysterious Witnesses of God! The Timewalkers (also known as “The Watchers”), were spies sent by God to spy out the land and to destroy Satan’s kingdom on earth, which included Europe and the United States of America! “LEGACY OF THE TIMEWALKERS”

Two time traveling heroes from the distant future: Matthew and Alexander built a sophisticated Time Machine hundreds of years ago, to arrive in the year 2099! Commissioned by GOD and His Son Jesus Christ. The brave and intelligent men were determined to stop Tiberius Nicholai Dukain, a ruthless tyrant known as “the Antichrist”, and his henchman and false prophet Ivar Turok, from setting off a nuclear bomb to annihilate the entire world! To defeat the madmen, Matt and Alex infiltrated the U.S. Federal Government as spies, working for the Central Intelligence Agency. Within months, they set up a secret military base in New Mexico, and called Area 51. Then they placed their Time Machine and high tech weaponry inside a hidden bunker. Their mission was to locate the nuclear bomb in time before it explodes, and expose Dukain and Turok to the world. Ultimately, God was in complete control of the operation of the uncanny crusaders for justice. The Lord informed Matt and Alex where Dukain was hiding the weapon of mass destruction. Without time to spare, Matt and Alex leaped through their Time Machine, wearing their high tech suits, and teleporting inside the German Headquarters of the European Union, where Tiberius Dukain and his forces was located. Once they arrived inside the Antichrist’s fortress, they activated their invisible shields covering their suits to avoid detection by Dukain’s private army. The stealth heroes sneaked inside the hidden room, and disabling the security devices where the nuclear bomb was installed. Matt and Alex soon discovered Dukain’s bodyguards and their leader Ivar Turok, guarding the nuclear weapon and the device that triggers it! Trained in martial arts by U.S. Special Forces, the time walking commandos overpowered the henchmen, and immediately captured the dirty bomb and activating device. The two crusaders teleported the nuclear arsenal from Dukain’s secret room deep into outer space, and triggered the bomb on an uninhabited planet! The unsung heroes had saved the earth! But their mission was not finished yet, the security alarms were reactivated, and they had to escape Dukain’s army, get safely out of Germany, and expose the Antichrist’s evil plans to the world! Fortunately, Matthew and Alexander was prepared to do just that, they quickly activated the armored gear installed in their time traveling suits, to shoot back at the guards, and teleported back inside their secured army base at Area 51! Matt immediately downloaded incriminating files, and Alex’s video recorded data of Dukain’s nuclear bomb and the enemy’s plans to annihilate the world to the social media. Soon the United Nations deployed military forces from various countries to apprehend Tiberius Dukain, and destroy his evil regime in Europe forever! After the top secret operation was finally disclosed to the President of the United States, he promptly arranged a ceremony to honor and reward the two brave time traveling heroes: Matthew Gagston and Alexander Pope… But the President and his administration was unaware that Matt and Alex were the mysterious Witnesses of God! The Timewalkers (also known as “The Watchers”), were spies sent by God to spy out the land and to destroy Satan’s kingdom on earth, which included Europe and the United States of America! Just as God used Moses to bring down the ancient African civilization of Egypt, so would He use the Timewalkers to expose and disassemble the evil ways of the Western World, because of its many transgressions against God and assuming the roles of a new Babylon and Roman Empire, and infecting most of the inhabitants of the world with the filthy mark of the beast! Bringing down the Antichrist was just the first stage of the Timewalkers’ mission as God’s Smugglers. The next phase of their plan was to gain the trust of all Americans, and for one of them to assume the role as Commander-in-Chief of the United States, which is the super powered nation and prophesied “Harlot” of the known world according to the Book of Revelation. Once they gained political power at the White House, they would effectively rewrite and undo all of the immoral values, laws, and foreign and domestic policies that promote abominations against God, His Holy Commandments, and His Patriarchal Principles. As with Moses, God blessed His two Disciples to gain favor with their enemies as popular heroes. The Federal Government’s covert operations division named the Central Intelligence Agency, assigned the two soldiers top level clearances and personal command of the reverse engineering department at Area 51. In time, both men earned military power and political influence by becoming valuable U.S. Government spies and Special Forces commandos. Alexander moved up the ranks and was reassigned as Director of the C.I.A., while Matthew was hired as the new Secretary of Defense. When the eight year term of Dr. Franklyn Victor Beckles, Jr., the second African American President of the United States ended, Matthew made his move in the upcoming Presidential Election of 3008, to run for President of the United States of America. God had blessed the men of God and given them favor in all the endeavors of their lives. Both men had married beautiful women and conceived many sons to carry on their family legacy, and their political ambitions to change the world and transform the United States from a country controlled by Satan, into a nation under God became an obsession for the Witnesses of God. Their main goal was to flush out and expose their hated enemy Satan, and bring down his political, economic, and religious establishment in America (which is an evil system that has existed since the day Adam and Eve was kicked out of the Garden of Eden), operated by the mysterious modern day satanic corporation called the Illuminati! This evil group of masterminds behind the world’s wars and atrocities, are men and women who are the descendants of the children of Satan. Undoing the irreparable damage to America by the Barack Obama administration, which was managed completely by the Illuminati. Finally, various New World Order groups connected to the Illuminati struck back hard by publicly attacking and exposing the Witnesses of God. So the men of God prayed for days, and the Lord Jesus Christ (a.k.a. “Yahawashi” The Son of The Living God) blessed them with the gifts of healing, the ability to resurrect the dead, and many supernatural powers of God’s Holy Ghost to cast out demons and to systematically destroy Satan’s kingdom from within his greatest empire, by using science and technology itself (which was managed by evil people and used to enforce the mark of the beast), and literally turning its applications against Satan himself!
