Bentornati a "Recensioni fuori tempo massimo" ovvero io che recensisco roba uscita nelle precedenti ere geologiche ma non posso esimermi dal commentare. Oggi parleremo di un film tanto strambo quanto buffo e particolare: Birds of Prey (o la fantasmagorica emancipazione di Harley Quinn).

La storia parte con la fine della relazione più tossica della storia del DC Extended Universe (DCEU), quella che tutti hanno amato in quanto scusa per i cosplay di coppia: Joker ha lasciato Harley Quinn! La simpatica e folle ragazza si ritrova così a doversi reinventare mentre tutta la città vuole soddisfazione per i torti fatti dalla gioviale criminale. Peccato che le sue azioni mettano in moto una disastrosa caccia all'uomo, o meglio alla ragazzina, dove il nuovo boss di Gotham Roman "Maschera Nera" Sionis rivuole il diamante che la borseggiatrice Cassandra Cain ha soffiato sotto il naso del sicario Victor Zsasz e di Dinah "Black Canary" Lance (cantante ma anche supereroina reticente), quest'ultima informatrice della poliziotta Reneé Montoya che vuole incastrare Sionis. Questo mentre una killer con balestra fa strage di criminali.

Iniziamo con quella che potrei definire una regola da applicare ai film del DCEU: Margot Robbie ADORA Harley Quinn e si vede! È assolutamente innamorata del personaggio con le sue follie, le battutine, le faccette buffe... Lei rende vivente il cartone animato senza scomodare campioni del NBA ed i Looney Tunes (non ho ancora visto il secondo Space Jam ma non mi attirava nemmeno l'idea... non divaghiamo). Lo si notava già nel criticatissimo Suicide Squad dove rubava l'attenzione di tutti. In Birds Of Prey, invece, tutto è più armonico e ben organizzato visto che lei è espressamente la protagonista, fornendo un ritaglio di spazio sufficente ai vari personaggi principali. Sufficente perché lo sviluppo di Dinah Lance o Helena "Cacciatrice" Bertinelli (la killer con balestra) è breve e rapido ma c'è tanta roba che potrebbe saltare fuori da queste due signore. Probailmente in serie TV su HBO Max, chi lo sa...

Il film ha un tono femminista ma senza sbattere tutto in faccia ogni volta. Ci sono tante indicazioni come il fatto che quasi tutti i cattivi sono uomini (ci sono solo due donne che si oppongono ad Harley & co. ma passano anche sottotraccia), che i poliziotti maschi prendono in giro Montoya a cui è stata anche soffiata la giusta promozione dal collega uomo... No, ok, a volte te lo sbatte in faccia il suo femminismo ma, per i miei gusti, non mi sembrava troppo smaccato come potrebbe esserlo in una serie Netflix. Il lavoro più sottile viene fatto con la figura della nostra vivace e psicotica protagonista che passa dall'essere la pupa da ammirare nei suoi shorts di Suicide Squad, appendice e succube di Joker, alla donna dagli abiti coloratissimi ma sempre giusti, mai per dare un contentino al pubblico, pronta a trovare la sua strada nel mondo e dare sfogo alla sua personalità (non per nulla ci ricorderà che lei è una psichiatra laureata prima che una criminale sciroccata).

In complesso è un film piacevole, allegro e colorato, folle, abbastanza violento ma non disturbante, che intrattiene. Per non parlare del fatto che dura il tempo giusto, non 2 o 3 ore! Santo cielo, questa cosa dei film maratona è davvero stancante! Tornando al film, c'è tanta azione e tutti fanno il loro lavoro (Ewan McGregor può fare qualunque cosa). Il prossimo passo quindi è vedere Margot Robbie divertirsi ancora in The Suicide Squad nei panni di Harley ma, al momento, anch'io mi sono divertito.

The Suicide Squad Harley Quinn Ends Up Back in Prison

Harley Quinn was last seen in Birds of Prey with her apprentice Cassandra Cain. But, come The Suicide Squad, she's back in prison.

Viewers who haven't seen 2016's Suicide Squad may still go to James Gunn's The Suicide Squad cold. It is, however, still in continuity to its predecessor and subsequent DC Extended Universe films. So it doesn't mean much for most characters of Task Force X. They are either new characters to DC's loose cinematic universe or no appearance since Suicide Squad.

Harley last appearance was in 2020's Birds of Prey (and Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). The film's subtitle stated that it was about Harley Quinn, determined to make her way after being dumped by Joker. Roman Sionis, a mob boss, better known as Black Mask, is their common enemy. She teams up with Quinn to defeat him.

Harley fought alongside Black Canary and Renee Montoya in the fight against Sionis. She was a great team player, likely because of her involvement with the Suicide Squad. Although her personality clashed with those of the Birds, she was able to work well with them, even Montoya, a no-nonsense cop.

The group managed to defeat Sionis' army of criminals. The Huntress helped Harley follow Sionis on skates after he kidnapped Cassandra Cain (the young thief Harley had taken her under her wing). Sionis was held hostage by a live grenade Cassandra had placed on him, and Harley confronted him and killed him.

Although Harley was a good friend to the Birds, Harley Quinn wasn't interested in joining the group. Canary, Huntress, and Montoya formed a bond over tacos and Harley and Cassandra ran away with the MacGuffin, the diamond in the film. To make Canary's escape even more complicated, Harley took Canary's car. Harley considers the Birds "dorky little good-willers" even though she could work well with them. Harley did throw the Birds a bone by allowing Huntress to access her family fortune through bank codes encoded on the diamond. Harley took the diamond and made money with Cassandra, her "apprentice".

It seems that Harley's stint as a girl boss ended abruptly. Rick Flag, a Squad veteran, tells Captain Boomerang in The Suicide Squad that Harley joined the Squad after being arrested for robbing a bank. Unfortunately, Harley's start-up didn't work out. Either she needed the money, or she was bored being a freelance badass. Additionally, it raises questions about what happened to Cassandra after Birds of Prey ended and The Suicide Squad began. Even though none of these will reveal the answers in The Suicide Squad's final episode, Harley will be seen back with the Squad. Unfortunately, it means that Amanda Waller will have to take her back to jail.
