Took way too long to finish this book bc I really did not want to. My opinions are too many to fit into one instagram post, so there’s a goodreads review link at the end of anyone’s interested. Was it truly, honestly the worst thing I’ve ever read? No. Was it fun? Also no. Romantic suspense is one of my favorite subgenres when it’s done right, but too often I find myself running into the same problem - Jerk Who Has a Lot of Sex does not equal Sexy Jerk. It’s a fine line, but if you want me to root for a lovable asshole, it’s crucial that he’s LOVABLE. Good things: The heroine’s a bodyguard. Sparring as foreplay. That’s it. Not good things: Implied gender politics that are depressing. The hero. Terrible handling of male sexual assault. From the setting to the plot to the characters and even the very ambience of the story so beautifully capture the balminess of an idyllic summer and the endless possibilities of both flourishing and withering it offers, and the quiet urgency of knowing that summer will ultimately end. Set in her Cambric Creek universe, where both "monsters" of myth and humans coexist, at the centre of the story are a human woman and a mothman. Grace is an event planner at a farm and Merrick is a botanist and researcher at a lab as well as new in town. They cross paths under extraordinarily risque circumstances, in sharp contrast to their very vanilla everyday lives. What I love about this setup is the generosity with which the writer allows for the characters to accept and seek out the kind of passion they want and deserve. Narrated entirely from Grace's perspective, we get more glimpses into the world of Cambric Creek, both within the little town of that name and beyond, and sensitive queries into the nature of monster-human relationships in their world. C.M. Nacosta does not shy away from having her protagonists explore uncomfortable questions about their relationship and what it means in the world they live in. Bookish review! Heated Rivalry was a great follow up to book one of the Game Changers series. Told in 4 parts over a ten year period this was a long, slow burn. The author explains that watching a documentary 24/7 provided a spark of inspiration for the book. I must say, this definitely felt realistic as a result, but she does mention it is not based on any real life people. As a hockey fan fic fan, I kinda liked this more as a result I think! The book certainly had a different feel from book one and I was completely engrossed. If did have a bit of an issue, it was with how their romance developed. At times it felt quite combatative initially and while I do enjoy a love/hate relationship the love felt a little one sided at times. However, this didn’t degract from my overall enjoyment of the novel and I cannot wait to read more, definitely an author to pick up if you’re a sports romance fan. I liked this lots! WEEKLY WRAP-UP at JeevesReads.com!!! I spent most of the week immersed in Untying the Knot, and I have no regrets – it was fantastic! Meghan Quinn always swings for the fences, so my experiences with her work can be inconsistent, but the good ones are REALLY good. This marriage in trouble romance gripped me the whole way through, and the audio (duet narration!) took everything up another notch. I’ve been abandoning books midway through all Fall, so I decided to do a special mini review week to talk about some of the books I can’t seem to finish (no, this isn’t all of them, lol). There’s another Quinn romance in the mix, Runaway Groomsman, which has a VERY different vibe than her newest release. It was slow going and the heroine still had a boyfriend other than the hero 200 pages in, so I set the book aside – despite the fact that I enjoyed a lot of it. Reluctantly Yours was a decidedly 4-star book that I abandoned (and forgot about) when something more exciting released, but I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from the author. And Sextuplet and the City was just too ridiculous for me – there’s a fine line between hysterical and cringey. I think talking about DNFs can be very valuable, and none of these were necessarily “negative” reviews. I've got a #bookreview for each of these at JeevesReads.com! KJ Charles is a new to me author and I had seen The Magpie Lord recommended on romance tumblr many a time, so I decided to take the plunge and buy it. Only $1!

Exiled to China for twenty years, Lucien Vaudrey never planned to return to England. But with the mysterious deaths of his father and brother, it seems the new Lord Crane has inherited an earldom. He’s also inherited his family’s enemies. He needs magical assistance, fast. He doesn't expect it to turn up angry. Magician Stephen Day has good reason to hate Crane’s family. Unfortunately, it’s his job to deal with supernatural threats. Besides, the earl is unlike any aristocrat he’s ever met, with the tattoos, the attitude... and the way Crane seems determined to get him into bed. That’s definitely unusual. Soon Stephen is falling hard for the worst possible man, at the worst possible time. But Crane’s dangerous appeal isn't the only thing rendering Stephen powerless. Evil pervades the house, a web of plots is closing round Crane, and if Stephen can’t find a way through it—they’re both going to die.

This is the first book in a m/m trilogy and I loved it so much I’ve already gone and bought the next two. The world building is subtle - mostly the reader learns about the magic of this universe as Lucien learns of it. The pace is incredible. The chemistry is *kisses fingers*.

It’s interesting to have a kind of fantasy romance set in historical times, as you also have the restrictions of the era as obstacles to be overcome, as well as the magical obstacles.

I thouroughy enjoyed The Magpie Lord and will be looking at KJ Charles’ other books as well. Perfect for fans of m/m or paranormal/urban fantasy romance I highly recommend this book!
