I've been doing a lot of thinking about Romani and Jewish solidarity lately, given our similarities.

We're both a diasporic people hated pretty much everywhere we go and blamed for all of the world's problems, especially in Southern and Eastern Europe.

We both have a closed culture that is very difficult to become a part of (from my understanding the only way to become Romani is to be "adopted" by a group of Romani or be born and raised in the culture)

We both have an extensive list of rules for living that are only fully known to the members of our communities and dictate things like diet, hygiene, prayer, etc

We're the two largest victims of the Shoah

We both often speak cultural languages associated with different demographics of the diaspora (Vlax Romani vs Balkan Romani vs Sinte Romani compared to Yiddish vs Ladino vs Arabiya Yahudiya)

We both often adopted the religions of the region in order to survive (forced Jewish and Romani conversion to Islam and Christianity)

I'm sure there's more I've forgotten, but feel free to chime in with your thoughts, and if I've misspoken please feel free to correct me -- since Romani is a wholly closed culture, I only know as much as Romani creators and educators are willing to share.

When I first started interacting with the reading/writing online communities I thought that enemies to lovers was like

‘two people on the opposing sides, who have faced each other multiple times in battle. They have scars from each other, yet there is an element of mutual respect for the other soldier.’ Kind of enemies,

and then one of them starts to see that their world view is wrong/they are on the wrong side, and they begin to be more reluctant about what they are doing, and stop fighting the other as much.

Until one day they confront someone in command, and get badly wounded for it, and go to their ‚enemy‘ for help, now on the same side, sort of.

And they aren’t friends, and they don’t trust each other fully, but they are on the same side. And as the pair get to know each other they slowly learn to try’s each other, and slowly become friends, and even more slowly learn to love each other

But no, more often then not it’s actually just an abusive guy who then blames his abuse on his ‘love for her’. Which unobjectively sucks when romanticised like this

No hate if you do like those kinds of enemies to lovers pipelines, I just find them icky

Can any Romani people translate a phrase for me? My great grandma apparently used to call people something that sounds like “chachambole” and I’m wondering if it’s Romani or if she made it up.

I’m absolutely not fluent but all of the linguistic clues point to it being Romani or something similar.

For the love of god if your native language is different from the majority language of the country you’re living in don’t raise your baby speaking the local language. Either have each parent speak to them in a different language or only speak your native language at home. The kid will be okay. Get your native language in their head. You may think you’re helping them in the long term giving them the local language but no. When they’re an adult they’ll wonder why you never taught them your language. They can and will learn the local language in school. They’ll be okay. Produce more bilingual children. They are good for society.
