When I say I wish popular romanisations of Thai were less ambiguous and more consistent, it's stuff like this:

Phupha and Pat (and Pa!) have the same initial consonant sound. Pran's is different—it's the same as Kampung's "p" sound. Pran, Pa, and Phupha share an "a" sound though—the same "a" sound Kampung also has (though it's written differently (*)). Kampung's "u" sound and Phupha's "u" sound are not the same. Kampung's "p" is the same sound as the initial in Pran. Kampung and Korn share an initial. It's the same sound the names Gunn (MSP) and Gun (Atthaphan) and Kan (KPTS) start with. All three of those names are pronounced identically. Kan (KPTS) is not pronounced the same as Kan (The Eclipse). Tian does not share an initial with Toto, but Toto (BBS) and Tinn (MSP) do. If the romanisation of BBS given names and ATOTS place names were consistent, we'd have Phut and Pha and Pran (or Pa Pan Dao). (Pa the person and Pha the word for cliff do not sound the same because of tones, but that's another topic.) I could go on.

And all this is just based on consonants and vowel quality and lengths, not even going into different glyphs for the same consonant. I don't have a solution to offer for this. I 100% think authors or subtitling teams (or, y'know, REGULAR PEOPLE who just want folks who don't speak Thai to be able to put their name in writing) choosing a romanisation that looks good to them is valid. But I'm also a language nerd, so I can't quite stop thinking how much harder this makes it for folks trying to learn more about the language, or pick up more about it, either.

(*) Edited 2023-06-16 to add: this was a mistake stemming from too many unchecked edits and I'm sorry. Kampung's "a" is neither long nor short whereas Pran, Pa, and Phupha have long "a" sounds and Pat has a short one.

'Shadow of the Colossus' was first released in the US on October 18th 2005, nine days before the Japanese edition, 'Wanda To Kyozou'. A similar-looking Chinese version was distributed on the 25th of that same month, its title concealing a small mystery that remains unsolved to this day.

While the cover logotype reads 'Wangda yu Juxiang', or "Wander and the Colossus", after the original Japanese name, its romanization, as printed on the manual cover, reads "Shadow AND the Colossus" - an unexpected hybrid of the Western and Japanese titles.

The same can be found on the disc itself, ruling out a mere printing blunder. Perhaps the package designer borrowed the word "Shadow" to create a parallel with the game's international title, one directed at the English-speaking Hong Kong market, but in the end neglected to change "and" for "of"?

Romanization Refactor for Draconic

I've been a little bit unsatisfied with the romanization for Draconic/Ndăkaga for a bit, and decided to adjust some of the values. It looked generally good, but some characters were more difficult to type and might not be familiar to less linguistically-sophisticated readers. As a result, I've changed the following mappings:

1. /ə/ changed from <ə> to <ă>. <ă> is used for the schwa in Romanian, so it's not unprecedented.

2. Following the above change, /ɪ ɛ/ have been changed from <î ê> to <ĭ ĕ>. This establishes the breve as bringing a sound closer to mid-central. Although we did decide on <î> in a stream vote, <ĭ> was not an option in that vote, so I feel more comfortable changing it. It also leaves the caret diacritic alone, which will be useful if I have to use it in other languages (say for tone).

3. /ŋ/ will change from <ŋ> to <ng>. This does mean that I will have <ngg> sequences occuring, but I feel it worth it so I don't have to switch keyboards and because captial <Ŋ> can be inconsistent.

4. /ʔ/ will change from <ʻ> (ʻokina) to <'> (apostrophe). ʻokina looks nicer, but it's just simpler to type an apostrophe. I would have to either copy-paste, set my language to Hawaiian, or do a custom keyboard layout to keep ʻokina.

These changes should make the orthography more intuitive, and everything on here is typable with SIL's EuroLatin keyboard, meaning I don't have any copy-pasting or keyboard switching to do while typing in Ndăkaga.

Yay! I have finally evolved a conlang with a nice, but wonky orthography!

Now, since there are two letters pronounced as /u/ is it justified romanizing one as u and the other one ů, since that one /u/ shifted from /o/?

I already know that it won't be one to one with the spelling due to how stress marking works.

thinking about how faux Latin in languages such as Greek, Russian/Any Cyrillic language, Arabic, Hebrew, Devanagari, Japanese, Chinese, etc. isn’t a thing because those languages have had some sort of exposure to the Latin script in some way throughout its history, wether it being in the printing age where they had to specify what the romanization system was

or when computers/phones first came out with only ascii

They adapted. They made their own romanization systems, which are even present in places such as the streets

This is why it’s more common to see Americans using faux Cyrillic/Greek, or seeing them with tattoos in katana that translate to gibberish

Day 42 - MyLang, Grammar Introduction

Today's prompt is about writing a short introduction to the grammar section. I am pretty happy with where I've landed with alignment, word order, and analytic v synthetic. So, here's the intro paragraph:

MyLang has SVO word order with a direct-inverse alignment and is more analytic in structures. A direct-inverse alignment uses a hierarchy of animacy to signal whether the most animate participant is the “notational subject or notational object” within a transitive predicate. When there are two participates of equal animacy, a proximate and obviate morphosyntactic strategy is used to distinguish the subject and object of the predicate. 

I also have changed up some of the sound changes. This has brought up the problem of how to romanize /y/ and /œ/ with a high tone. I can't be copy/pasting them forever, so I need to come up with a better solution.

One option that I am playing with is to use <h> in the coda to indicate the previous vowel has a high tone. /h/ is no longer present in coda positions by the time we reach Modern MyLang, so that won't be a problem.

Some examples with those vowels:

fœh - /fœ́/ "mouse"

yyhz - /y̌z/ "bee"

œhfa - /œ́.fa/ "breast"

ryhsk /rýsk/ "to sleep"

Some examples of some other vowels with the <h> strategy:

nehvo - /névo/ "to grow"

grakuh /grakú/ "boulder"

lahro / láro/ "to gather, collect"

tezhih /tezhí/ "dandelion:

The thing is that the standard a e i o u vowels are easy to type with an acute accent. Maybe I am condemed to a life of copy/paste?

if you want to better yourself here are some tips and tricks from me

number 1. learn, sink in to your knowledge! learn languages learn things. learn history. be smart, you don’t have to be the smartest person in the world. it’s good to be aware of the world. knowledge is a great skill and quality to have.

number 2. have a healthy life style. this will help in the long run. with so many diseases and many other things in this world you can do so much too prevent it! you don’t have to do crazy diets if you don’t like to. i personally fast and still eat the stuff id like, but in moderation . you can exercise and still eat whatever you want! that’s what helps with me

number 3. focus on you. don’t focus on others, make yourself the priority. others will come later. dress for yourself do not dress for others. that shows lack of confidence because you care so much about how others think of you when you do that. wear what’d you like, change your hair, do anything that’s in your hearts desire.

number 4. remember mental health plays a significant role in your life. meditate, write in a journal, do shadow work or even watch videos on self help. you can find shadow work on pinterest. alessia (persephonesblood) has a shadow book on amazon if your interested.

number 5. this is your life, your movie. don’t let yourself be a side character of your life. don’t listen to people with their negative energy reflecting themselves onto you. where is that even going to get them? they talk about you because no one cares when they talk about themself because it’s so boring. not everyone is going to like you and that’s okay. their opinion is invalid.

number 6. stop living in the past. where is the past? gone, you have no control of it. so let go of it. it’s going to get you absolutely no where. be in the present think of your future. vision your future, plan on your future. do what you think is going to have your future self thank you.

Some people have been confused by the question about scripts and romanization. If your word is written in the Latin script, like English, French, or many European languages, you can ignore that box.

If your word uses a different script though, like Hiragana (ひらがな) or Cyrillic (кириллица), a romanization (putting that word into Latin letters) would be helpful, so people can at least like, roughly pronounce it. That's all!

(If you're confused about the IPA part, you can ignore that too, that's just for anyone who happens to be a linguistics nerd like me)
