I would like to know, what was Natasha’s role in episode 5 of What If (Season 2), what was her relationship with Peggy, and did she interact with Steve at all? I have gotten some updates on Marvel’s ongoing crusade against Stucky, but not so much about the ongoing crusade against Romanogers, so I am curious.
To be totally honest, at first I could barely remember that Natasha was even IN the episode. That's how little she added to it. Here's a rundown of everything she does:
the very first scene of the episode is the iconic "Avengers assemble" moment from the first movie, but with Peggy giving out orders instead of Steve. The exact same orders. I don't think a single word was different. And the scene ends with her doing what Steve did for Nat and launching her into the air off the shield.
the next meaningful thing she does at all is hop in a jet and try to shoot down Hydra Stomper Steve when he tries to kill Secretary of Defense Bucky.
once Nat and Peggy bring down the suit, they take the unconscious Steve to one of Nat's safehouses. This one is in Scotland. She argues with Peggy for a bit about what to do, but she doesn't say a word once Steve wakes up.
since in this universe Hydra was totally wiped out in the 1950s, the Red Room takes its place as the Super Secret Evil Organization That Was Here The Whole Time. And to that end, Nat is once again used as a plot device to get Peggy and Steve to where it is.
they end up in Russia, in a bizarre Pleasantville-esque American town (and just as an aside, since Elizabeth Olsen was in the opening credits I'm sure a lot of people, me included, were thinking that in this reality Wanda had been taken by the Red Room and this was something they were having her do. But no, Wanda is only in the final seconds of the episode to set up another one. I'm glad she didn't appear, as seeing her as a Red Room agent would've made me pop a blood vessel, but still).
Apparently in this universe Natasha succeeded in killing Dreykhov, so Melina is the head of the Red Room. Yet while you'd think this would be a great chance to do something with Nat, 99% of the confrontation is between Melina and Peggy. At one point Melina even says... I wish I was kidding... "Even in Russia, little girls dream of growing up to be Captain Carter".
the big final battle is between Peggy and Steve, and during that Nat is fighting a bunch of other Black Widows, but most of it is offscreen.
Nat is completely outmatched when Melina steps in, and Melina is on the brink of strangling her when Steve breaks his programming and latches onto her with a grappling spike before launching both of them into the air to destroy the Red Room. So much like in her own damn movie, Natasha didn't get to resolve her own past issues.
That about sums it up. Natasha was pretty much an afterthought in the episode. The only characters she directly speaks to are Peggy and Melina. Which I guess is slightly better than taking everything she does for Steve and giving it to Peggy, but it's still enraging. I didn't get a single bit of chemistry from the two of them.
