Romans 5!!
If I’m not careful I’ll just quote the whole chapter because it is such a splendid thing. The entire epistle to the Romans is Paul at his most precise and logical (Law universities used to use the book of Romans as an example of how to structure an airtight argument); Romans 5 is where he proves beyond a doubt that he can be precise and logical and also staggeringly elegant.
Many glorious excerpts I could quote, but I’m gonna go with this one:
“For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.”
Someone asked RC Sproul once in a mixed-panel Q&A what kind of Christian he would call himself, (undoubtedly wanting to spark a bit of an onstage debate about Calvinism or some other “controversial” label). Sproul, who was notoriously quick on his feet, answered without hesitating, “I’m an Imputationist.”
‭The free gift by faith that Paul refers to here in Romans 5 is the spotless snow-white righteousness of Christ imputed unreservedly to your blemished, sin-blotted, red-inked account. This is what the Father sees when He regards you, Christian sisters. Praise be to God indeed.

Why does Paul say that 'many' were made sinners and not that 'all' were when it is clear that all have sinned, as he has just said himself? It is one thing to sin and another to be a sinner. A sinner is someone who, as a result of much sinning, has got into the habit and, I would dare say, the enjoyment of it. In the same way, a righteous person is not someone who has done one or two acts of righteousness, but rather someone who has become accustomed to acting righteously and has righteousness in him by habit.
Origen of Alexandria; Commentary on Romans 5:19

Steadfast desire for God
Steadfast desire for God
Every believer in the God of the Bible has a challenge to remain earnestly seeking God. In the Proverbs, the Wisdom of God is personified as a woman at the gates of the city, shouting to those who pass by and encouraging those who would seek the favor of God to come to her. Proverbs 8:34-35 – Happy is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. For he who…

Results of Justification
1 Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3 More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.
6 While we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Why, one will hardly die for a righteous man—though perhaps for a good man one will dare even to die. 8 But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we are now justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received our reconciliation.
Adam and Christ
12 Therefore as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned— 13 sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.
15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the effect of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. 17 If, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
18 Then as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to acquittal and life for all men. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man’s obedience many will be made righteous. 20 Law came in, to increase the trespass; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. — Romans 5 | Revised Standard Version (RSV) Revised Standard Version of the Bible, copyright © 1946, 1952, and 1971 the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. 6.] More Money More Problems
This was the only place in Hong Kong where the gifts of the SPIRIT were being used, & this is where I told some stories last night [57:04]
That they some of the visitors came along &      they were quite upset with what was going      on—they said because it was a huge number
suddenly we'd grown into hundreds they said      “How did you do this?!” Oh I don't know we      sort of grew..
“Where did you get all these people? Do you       call yourself a pastor? Are you a fellowship?       Do you think women should be..”
I dunno, it just sort of happened. [57:38]
The LORD is so sweet.
But you see, showing all that fruit      didn't mean we were successful.
What is successful is doing the will of GOD & therefore consider it pure joy my brothers whenever you face trials of many kinds cause you know the testing of your faith produces perseverance. [James 1:2-4]
James 1:2-4 | Rejoicing in Trials [Philippians 1:12-20] Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, ³ because you know the testing of your faith develops perseverance.
⁴ Allow perseverance to finish its work, so you may   be mature and complete—not lacking anything.”
2 Peter 1:3-9 | Partakers of the Divine Nature ³ HIS divine power has given us everything we need for life & godliness thru the knowledge of HIM WHO called us by HIS OWN glory and excellence. ⁴ Through these HE has given us HIS precious & magnificent promises, so that thru them you may become partakers of the divine nature, now that you've escaped the corruption in world caused by evil desires. ⁵ For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; & to virtue, knowledge; ⁶ & to knowledge, self-control; & to self-control, perseverance; & to perseverance, godliness; ⁷ and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. ⁸ For if you possess these qualities & continue to grow in them, they will keep you from being ineffective & unproductive in your knowledge of our LORD JESUS CHRIST. ⁹ But whoever lacks these traits is nearsighted to point of blindness, having forgotten he has been cleansed from past sins.
And Romans 5, “Rejoice in your sufferings.”
Romans 5:3-5 | ³ Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; ⁴ perseverance, character; & character, hope. ⁵ & hope does not disappoint us cause GOD has poured out HIS love into our hearts through the HOLY SPIRIT, WHOM HE has given us.
6.1] What is sufferings?
Think Naomi put it so well yesterday sufferings is really understanding & sharing the heart of the LORD JESUS for us.
You have to get over your own sufferings, ok
We're not counting that. We're counting on sharing HIS. Rejoice therefore in sufferings because they will produce perseverance & perseverance will produce character which will produce hope!
And hope does not disappoint us because GOD has poured out HIS love into our hearts by the HOLY SPIRIT which HE has given us!
You see just at the right time CHRIST died for the ungodly & HE's given me the privilege of loving the ungodly & living with the ungodly—who've just become a bit godly. [59:15]
And lead [them] loving & growing up.
6.2] Final Word of Encouragement
So I want to bless some of you, encouraged some of you, & ask you to stand so we can pray for you
   •  Have you started your race? [1:00:002]     •  And will you finish?
Paul says I've finished the race marked out [2 Timothy 4:7]
The enemies are the ones you're competing against:
[1]  Sexual temptation,    [2]  Needing all your friends approval,    [3]  Not going somewhere because by staying            behind you might find a good marriage partner
They're all enemies!
You think the LORD is going to withhold any good thing from you? If you do HIS will, HE will not.
Are you going to miss out on what your friends get?
Yes but you have the better part, you have the better part [1:01:00]
Luke 10:41-42 | “Martha, Martha,” the LORD    replied, “you're worried & upset about many    things. ⁴² But only one thing is necessary and    Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will    not be taken away from her.”
You have eternity, the joy in Heaven. All those people that you've touched along the way [and] like JESUS for the joy set before HIM
—HE endured the cross & scorned in shame, so I want to ask you: Have you started your race and will you run it with perseverance?
Let me bless you all & then I especially want to pray for the Caleb's—Max my friend, I thought you were telling me to start the worship. [1:01:39]
Do you want to close your eyes & open your hands and receive this. I bless you to run the race marked out for you, I bless you to go for the portion which has been reserved for you.
   •  Because you were made for it    •  you were made by a CREATOR
WHO made you so carefully & specially that only thru you, could HIS love & HIS heart be displayed to certain people.
………………………………………………………………………….      I bless you to be free from needing to look      successful or counting numbers; I bless you      not to be jealous of those of your friends ………………………………………………………………………….
—who seem to have what's called a ministry never mind that stuff, never mind that stuff
   •  we're not here on Earth to start ministries    •  we're here on Earth to love our neighbors    •  to love the poor
A Ministry might come out of it.
I bless you to run with patience & if you don't see what the LORD has envisioned you with, not to be disappointed—but to know that whatever you do in the LORD's Name is not in vain.
There will be a harvest!
Someone else may reap it. There will be a harvest for those of you who've started, who've got stuck
   •  I'm just sowing    •  I'm just sowing    •  I'm just sowing
I bless you to know there's always a harvest
   •  always someone    •  always
Don't say four more months & then the harvest
There's a harvest everywhere.
So for those of you who only sow, I bless you to do some reaping because there's a harvest around everywhere
somewhere everywhere in this city, in the place you live—there's a harvest waiting..
I sent you to reap. What you have not worked for others have done the hard work, & you will reap the benefits of their labor.
So those of you who got stuck, just do a little sowing—go & do some reaping & know that you are called to reap what others have sown
And you won't be proud, but you must do some reaping, there's always a harvest somewhere.
For those of you that think you've got to spend your life reaping, I bless you to sow with the heart of the LORD JESUS patiently loving the unlovely, and when they don't change as quickly as you think they should that the HOLY SPIRIT will show you your own self and how patient HE has been with you—to allow you to make mistakes & still love you. [1:04:50]
To have your weaknesses & still to have used you.
I bless you who are young to start training some of my friends have started training they're teenagers
   •  They're having a month without cell phones         that's tough because some of you are going         to spend your lives in a place where there'll         be no cell phones; & you really will have to         leave your father's household—to go to the         land—where HE sends you without instant         communication or gratification except from         the GOD & to know HIS approval
   •  I bless you young people, if you have race with         men on foot & they have worn you out—how         will you compete with horses?
   •  if you stumble in safe country how will you         manage by the thickets in the Jordan?
Therefore everyone who competes for the race goes into strict training — & you do this to get a crown that will last forever. [1:07:04]
So I bless you young people to be very patient & to be very impatient & believe.
For those of you who've labored a long time         & seemed not what you hoped for... I'd like         you to come forward
Those of you who are disappointed, you've         done the math & it wasn't what you hoped         for—we're really asking you forward
To congratulate you.
Also want to invite some older people, who are afraid that you missed it—you know there is a call on your life.
Here's the good news:
It's not too late. I've got some friends in Britain, who started at the age of 65—just the right age.
I mean they finished having their kids & grandkids of course they've got time—great to look after the poor in their City, Marvelous.
- Not too late at all - Not too late at all Caleb
I'm just as young, I'm just as vigorous!
The LORD has kept you alive all this time, so you can claim your inheritance—so open your hands!
We say for all of you—who have not seen what you have hoped [for] there will be a harvest. So faint not, faint not, faint not, faint not!
Someone else may reap it! They may even put it in a magazine & claim it as theirs, you laugh at them.
It wasn't yours either — it was just the work of the LORD & HE let them be in it, & HE let you be in it, & the glory goes to HIM! [1:09:27]
Yeah we don't need that on Earth, we don't need that. We can live without it—actually it's a bit distracting isn't it?
So I bless you to live a bit quietly—a bit quietly
For those of you who are disappointed:
This is what perseverance produce: character & hope so go on! If you stopped, if the poor have robbed you of your hope
—if the one you prayed for has disappointed you well done, this is just a few steps you have to go on. [1:10:20]
Doesn't mean to say your Ministry failed
So much better is it [than] not to start it, & end  up with bloody knees then not to have run at all.
And the Church is full of people with clean knees, so if you messed up: Great! HE is so pleased you ran
If you lost your goods, if you trusted somebody who turned out to cheat you—well done! Well done!
Love covers a multitude of sins—you did well, that is all that counts is love—the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself, if you messed up & trusted the wrong person.
Other people can be cynical—but I'm not
- You did good - You did good - You did good
You may learn to grow in wisdom, you may learn to find people who help you through these ways.
But don't become cynical or hard-hearted, we don't need that; & by the way those of you who minister with the poor, never taken advice from pastors that haven't lived it. [1:11:44]
—it's not right, they don't know what they're talking about—only those who physically been on the floor with the poor have a right.
And those people will never offer you advice.
I don't. They'll just say well done. We understand that's it, so if your pastors giving you advice, and he doesn't do this stuff:
Say thank you very much and pray for him.
He just doesn't know that's all—& I can see because I can see, I can see because I can see, because I can see in the distance millions of people praising the LORD because you people here—are going to go on running your race. [1:13:00]
And you don't have to write Facebook or newsletters with all your successes—you don't need to make up great stories so you get financial support.
That's stupid.
It's tempting though, the LORD will provide for you —you haven't got to impress with the miracles so bless you.
Thank you Jackie, thank you, thank you brilliant!

ROMANS S.O.A.P. ~ CHAPTER 5
Thursday, 1/26/23
SCRIPTURE:
So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.  ~ Romans 5:11
OBSERVATION:
NOW I can rejoice in my wonderful NEW relationship with God...
...because Jesus...
...made me - me~! - one of God's friends - someone whom He knows and with whom He has a bond of mutual affection -
What was I doing under my old relationship with Him? (Hints: it wasn't wonderful and I wasn't rejoicing...)
...because me - all about me...
...made me less than even an acquaintance of His...
But because Jesus... because Jesus...
APPLICATION;
Rejoice in my always-new relationship with the Father...
Wonder at the wonderfulness of it all...
Be His friend first - in all things...
Strengthen my bond of "mutual affection" through praise and thankfulness... and obedience...
PRAYER:
Affectionate Father God - Thank You for Your Holy Spirit's gentle reminders to rejoice in the wonderful friendship You seek with me and have made available through Your Son Jesus's life, death, and resurrection - forgive my taking advantage of this unimaginable relationship, of taking it for granted, by my selfish thoughts and actions... Keep me mindful of You first, and the needs and concerns of others as Your Spirit reveals them... In Jesus's loving and saving Name, and for Your glory and honor and praise...
Yours, in joy and thanksgiving - because of Him...

polls reveal just how many people use tumblr without interacting with posts. these polls with 100k votes but 10k reblogs, if that... it's been obvious for a few years just how many people have come from other websites and refuse to learn how to use tumblr based on the reblog to like ratio skyrocketing in likes' favor (when reblogs used to be higher than likes on popular posts) but seeing these actual numbers revealed by polls (since few can resist voting on a poll) is crazy

Daily Devotional: Romans 5:1-11
Daily Devotional: Romans 5:1-11
Therefore, since justification is by grace alone through faith alone, we have peace with God through Christ. There seem to be many today, even of the household of faith, who believe God is interested in war against people. Through Christ, He has declared peace and is saving a people by grace through faith for Himself. Those who are in Christ have peace with God. Those who are not in Christ do not…

Need to Suffer? OR Cause for Celebration!?!
Tumblr media
Romans 5:3-5 is one of the most misunderstood passages in the whole Bible.
In most cultures, those who suffer are looked upon as heroes, and often not without good reason. However, what we are impressed with, doesn’t always mean that’s what God is looking for!
The context of Romans 5 isn’t about suffering!
It’s about the free gift of ALL that Christ did for us in reconciling union!!!
It’s saying that we have been given so much by what He’s done that we can rejoice extravagantly!! It’s about extravagant JOY!!! Even when hard things happen, we can rejoice…
BECAUSE even those things are turned to good by REVEALING the heart transformation that God has done to us by the Holy Spirit! (Rom. 5:5)
Revealing NOT causing!
Many read this passage and assume that the noble thing that we respect, namely suffering, CAUSES us to become more patient, hopeful, and filled with character. It doesn’t. That’s not what this passage is about at all.
Step back and read the context. Is this a section on suffering? No! It’s a chapter about the free gift of reconciliation in Christ!
Verses 3-5 are often translated as if suffering is producing all these good fruits in our lives, and most translations do seem to communicate this! However, can we again step back and examine again?
The word for “produces” in many translations is only found one time in these verses. It’s only in verse three, and according to Adam Clarke’s commentary it’s in an ancient phrase taken from refining metals. If you think about refining gold, removing the dross only reveals the gold that was already there, it doesn’t create the gold.
Then, in verse four, the word for “produces” is not there, nor in verse five. Verse four has the word “dokimos” meaning “proof,” not the word “producing!” The “cheerful endurance” that has been revealed in verse three is PROOF! Proof of what? Proof that we have something super real that stands up with happy confident hope even when hard times come upon us!
Verses four and five follow the progression of how trials reveal how excited we should be because nothing can stop the love that God’s out in us THROUGH CHRIST!
This is why the Mirror Bible gives us a much better paraphrase of the meaning of these passages here:
“Our joyful boasting in him remains uninterrupted in times of trouble; we know that pressure reveals patience. Tribulation doesn’t have what it takes to nullify what hope knows we’ve got!  (4)  Patience proves legal tender; which buys more positive expectation.  (5)  This kind of hope does not disappoint; the love of God has become an artesian well within us because of the gift of the Holy Spirit.” - Romans 5:3-5 MIRROR
Such a better communication of these verses, MUCH more in keeping with the context!
Does suffering happen, absolutely!
Is it necessary for you to become a better person? No! God’s finished work in Jesus is so scandalous that it nullifies all the hard painful processes that we want to wear as a badge in this world, and gives us the full meal deal absolutely for free!!!
And, this all expenses paid, absolutely free gift of union-communion Paradise is in no way shallow! This party continues even when we may suffer, because HOOPOMONAY (cheerful constancy) has been imparted to us 2000 years ago in Christ!
There is absolutely no room for a sad suffering theology in these verses! It scandalizes our calls for the few, the brave, and the “real heroes.” What Christ has done is so much better than we’ve imagined!!!
- Matt

Helping those who cannot help themselves
Helping those who cannot help themselves
Today we will be looking at the topic of compassion, and how compassion is building bridges to others who are unable to get from where they are to where God wants them to be. Luke 6:35-36 – …he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is also merciful. In our English Bibles, sometimes verses that express compassion will mention mercy or kindness;…

Sermon 1 John 3:10 - 24 What does real Christianity look like? It demonstrates rightous lives and love. vs 10 - 15
vs 11 vs 12 Don't be like Cain.
e.g. Star Wars Anakin Skywalker had sinister evil fester inside him until he became Darth Vader.
True vs False Christianity False Teachers wouldn't have righteous lives.
Be thankful that God is at work in your life. Look at the fruit of a new teaching. Does it line up with the Bible?
True Christianity demonstrates true love. vs 16
Jesus' sacrificial love.
vs 17
vs 19 e.g. Parental love. Siblings reflecting their parent's love.
Real Christianity 1) It demonstrates righteous living and love 2) It demonstrates Christlike love 3) It demonstrates obedience to God's commands and gives assurance.
Live before God with confidence.
A whole life commitment.
Imposter Syndrome
But we have assurance. If have committed to Christ, God has admitted you into His family.
Romans 8:1 Romans 5:1
Christians can be assurred that they belong to Christ because of His final work on the Cross, and the evidence they see in their lives.
When you feel unsettled, remember what real Christianity looks like from 1 John 3 and with God's help, persevere in it unashamedly.
