For the Laicion nation (aka, me and three other people)
I had this illustration commissioned (a big thank you to @lunehowls) for my werewolf AU Laicion fic (still a WIP).
The general pitch is as follows :
AU in which Laios never got to meet his sister again, putting his life on a whole other path, a more desperate one. A military deserter with barely a coin to his name, Laios hitches a ride on a boat to one of the elven continents, where he learns about magical tattoos that binds one’s soul to a wolf’s, effectively making them artificial werewolves. Illegal magic be damned, this feels like the answer to… everything.
In the process, he learns about the existence of an illegal fighting ring in one of the elven cities, where beastmen gladiators gather. Freshly tattooed and without anywhere else to go to, Laios decides to head there, where he meets Lycion, an elf and artificial werewolf gladiator. If they first bond over a simple shared meal, by spending time together (sharing the same room in the barracks, maybe the same bed? gasp) they find that they have a lot in common, notably a shared distaste for the body they were born in, a dysphoria partially remedied by becoming a werewolf.
They bond :)

It’s a little bit ‘I was the match and you were the rock, maybe we started this fire/We sat apart and watched all we had burn on the pyre,’ and ‘Do you understand that we will never be the same again?’ from Bastille’s The Things We Lost In The Fire
and a little bit:
‘A l’instar de son aîné, Caius Antonius sait se montrer délicieux. Il est cultivé, intelligent, plein d’esprit, gracieux, amiable. Surtout, il appartient à la même génération que Brutus, au même milieu. Depuis le départ de Cassius pour l’Orient, il y à quatre mois, Marcus a vécu avec des hommes dont il pourrait être le père, ou avec les soldats, des bas officiers plus âgés mais qui ne sont pas de son monde.’
and also
‘En juin, Cassius a enlevé Laodicée et définitivement défait les forces de Dolabella. Jugeant les autres à sq propre mesur, le beau Publius Cornelius s'est souvenu de ce qu'il avait fait subir à Trebonius…Cassius passant pour un homme violent et rancunier, pour un ami fidèle aussi, Dolabella s'est dit qu'il allait payer la mort horrible de l'ancien gouverneur.’
Brutus: Assassin par idéal, Anne Berner
actually it’s mostly about how my entire playlist for the road leading up to Philippi (after both Brutus and Cassius leave Rome after the assassination of Caesar) is Bastille’s Bad Blood album on repeat. I want their relationship to get messy. There’s another version of this scene that gets a lot more teeth to the subtext of the conversation, but I wanted to play around with it first before committing to like. room layouts. there was originally a couple of transitional panels before the last 2 because I wanted Brutus to really chew on this thought he has, but augh. stairs. didn’t feel like drawing those.

Audrey Hepburn and her good friend, French designer Hubert de Givenchy, on the set of Funny Face in 1956
[Hubert] had a reassuring, gentle and father-like manner which was so enjoyed by his staff, his friends and his family. Over 30 years he developed a close and platonic friendship with Audrey Hepburn, dressing her in public and private, helping her with her charities and offering tender care when she was dying of cancer. He sent a private plane to fly her back from America so that she could spend her final days at her home in Switzerland, surrounded by little posies of sweet-smelling lily of the valley—her favourite flowers that he always sent to her. i think making roman's last scene solely about rg is reductive and the takes calling it heteronormative are so funny i'm sorry i'm SORRY but to me it read as, like. the martini equals gerri equals logan equals everything that waystar entails. he's sharing a drink with an imaginary gerri he's sitting with his father's ghost he's tentatively placing a paw outside the cage and laying the last year or so of bullshit to rest.

Artemis, who has not spent millennia upholding a strict vow of chastity to be slandered with this bullshit: *squawks indignantly while her huntresses desperately hold her back from throwing hands with a random mortal teenager*

i mean we all know rome actually blames himself for logan’s death right. like he’s projecting onto matsson but is very clearly terrified his phone call was the thing that killed dad. his anger at matsson for trying to make dad-death related power plays is very genuine and real but i don’t think deep down he blames matsson — rome saying matsson killed logan is like rome saying he’s ‘pre-grieved’ imo. it’s a way of coping and attempting to ignore and shut out the surplus of emotions roiling underneath. because sure, matsson didn’t help the situation. but roman, roman dealt the killing blow. maybe matsson got logan onto the plane, but roman got logan onto the stretcher, and no one is more painfully aware of that than roman himself

seems I need to clarify but, yes, I know what Riordan intended to say or do within scene x, y, or z and I know what Riordan intended to achieve with certain plot points, my interpretations are born from how badly he executed it all. hope that helps!

spartacus and crassus :)
this is actually a rejected panel from a much longer comic I’ve been fucking around with on and off for awhile- I had plans to do a long form spartacus comic for a long time, I just keep missing the last book on my research list in second hand stores 😔 I always have money when the last copy sells out aughhh
anyway! I might call crassus my girl in the group chat, but I’ve actually spent more years wishing that spartacus got to run crassus through on his sword and then read the fate of rome out of his entrails. ALAS. on that note, isn’t it kind of interesting how spartacus’ funeral games for crixus turn roman order upside down and feel like both a foundational sacrifice and a curse? isn’t it kind of fun how crassus will not die in rome, and neither will pompey, who came in like a vulture to take credit for crassus’ work? (it’s VERY fun)
