ROMEO ⸺ SJY
❔ jake's first kiss 〡 fluff ・ @lilacnini warnings! skinship, shakespeare (?) wc : 351 ( LIBRARY )
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
'jake?' he hummed in response.
'you're not listening.' he was. though he paid attention to every sentence you read aloud or explained to him, his gaze was directed elsewhere. your plush, pink lips, to be specific.
'sim jaeyun,' you called, perhaps it was the 50th time you'd done so, and it finally elicited a reaction out of him.
'government name?' he joked, an awkward smile spread across his face. unfortunately for him, you weren't amused.
'jake! i've been ranting about the balcony scene this entire time, but it looks like you're totally lost,' you said, exasperated.
'i'm not. ask me anything, i'll answer it,' he promised. if anything, jake didn't need your help in explaining "romeo and juliet"— he understood it pretty well. he just wanted an excuse to stare at you and your pretty face, like a love-struck fool.
'ok, jaeyun, why's the balcony scene important?'
'because it solidifies the bond of love between romeo and juliet,' he said, wincing at the mention of his name.
you paused, upon realizing he was right. he was listening, you thought, a smile tugging against the corners of your lips. he surprised you, at times, with his thick-set glasses, and his messily parted hair, and his shit-eating grin.
"'it is the east, and juliet is the sun,''' he said aloud, after a moment, "'arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, who is already sick and pale with grief,''' he continued, pulling closer. his lips were just mere inches away from yours.
'''that thou her maid art far more fair than she,''' you finished with a chuckle, pressing your "plush, pink lips" against his soft, wax-balm flavored ones. your gentle kiss lasted for a short second, but to him, it felt like time itself had stopped.
you pulled away, leaving him in a daze with hot, flushed cheeks. he hadn't expected you'd kiss him; he'd thought you'd continue quizzing him about the play.
'you think i'm as beautiful as the sun?' you teased, referring to the quote he'd just said, leaning forward towards him.
'm-more importantly, you- you just kissed me!'

This particular thought came to me because I remembered how annoyed I was when Lucifer (the TV series) made an off-hand joke about how "Oscar Wilde was straight before he met me" but then I remembered that also in the Good Omens book it is heavily implied that Oscar Wilde and Aziraphale were involved together, which creates the hilarious suggestion that in the Gaiman-verse Oscar Wilde was sleeping around with several celestial all without them knowing about each other.
Which then led me down a rabbit hole of thinking about famous historical figures dealing with getting papparazied and approached by time travellers all the time.
Shakespeare sitting in a bar when an anachronistic strangers approaches, thinking "oh dear god, time to see what half-remembered ramble I'm about to hear of my own play again." While a time traveller is absolutely convinced that they are about to become the inspiration to Romeo and Juliet by giving the cliffnotes as "his own idea" (Romeo and Juliet has been playing in the globe for years at this point) Shakespeare doesn't say anything because he is morbidly interested in hearing how badly someone can misremember and misunderstand a play.
Leonardo Da Vinci selling his 50th "first draft, it's probably not even good enough to make the final version, oh you think I should? Well, why don't you buy this draft for a cheap price then" of Mona Lisa. (the painting was finished years ago).
And of course, Oscar Wilde seeing an anachronistic person looking particularly time-travellerly and siddling up like "You mean two men...in intimate relations...what a novel and completely new idea for me....maybe you should show me....(he's fucked five other time travellers just this week.)
Anyway, I just particularly dislike the trope where a time travelling normie somehow manages to influence and inspire historical famous people.

I have two Barbie dolls that I keep on my shelf because when I was going through my old box of Barbies, I remembered these as two of my favorites and couldn’t bear to keep them in an out-of-sight box in the basement. I seldom pay them any thought, yet it is extremely clear to me that their names are Juliet and Daisy, and they have a beautiful lesbian love story that somehow transcends time because Daisy is from the 1920’s and Juliet is from the 14th century A.D. I never even made them kiss as a little kid so I don’t know how I’m just seeing it now but I’m very happy for them regardless.
The other good part to this is that they’re both collectible Barbie dolls that would be pretty valuable if I had kept them in the box. Unfortunately when my grandmother gifted me her aunt’s Barbie collection, she didn’t take into account how little a five year old cares about the stock value of collectible items as opposed to how much one loves cutting Barbie hair. So that is what I did. The Juliet half of the “Romeo & Juliet” Barbie set got a snazzy new haircut after being removed from her box, and “Dance ‘till Dawn: Great Fasions of the 1920’s” Barbie lost her shoes, stand, hairpiece and boa. The only one I still have in the box is the “Christian Dior 50th anniversary” Barbie, which is thankfully the most expensive.

For me the multi fandom experience is, being interested in one thing for example let‘s say I’m into Loki atm, but then I’m at my grandparents’ and we watch Star Trek, where I see Data and start catching Fandom-feels. So I’m thinking “maybe I’ll watch Star Trek while eating tonight. But instead of doing that I watch Romeo+Juliet for the 50th time which sends me off to reading fanfic until I go to sleep.
I wake up the next morning, my brother asks me to play a game with him, it‘s Pirate Worriors, so I start to look for One Piece fanfiction while we‘re still playing because my focus switched, while also still reading a Bencutio fanfiction from the night before. I scroll through tumblr on my search for content and bump into a Destiel edit, that emotionally destroys me so much that I want to start watching SPN again cuz all types of feelings are welcome as long as I feel something. The edit then reminds me of a Good Omens edit I made for myself some time ago and now I’m left at the table unsure of what I should watch while eating, cuz idk which road I wanna go down and nothing feels completely right.
Yeah.
And in the end I watch smth totally unrelated.

A scene from the Joyce Theater revival of Rennie Harris’s “Rome & Jewels,” from 2000. Credit: Andrea Mohin/The New York Times
Hip-hop is now established enough to get an all-star 50th-birthday celebration at the Grammys. Hip-hop concert dance isn’t quite that old, but it can look back a few decades, as with the revival of Rennie Harris’s “Rome & Jewels” at the Joyce Theater this week.
When this adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet” had its debut in 2000, it was Harris’s first evening-length work, and it established him as the most gifted and canny choreographer exploring and expanding the possibilities of street dance in a concert setting. In that realm, he’s still unsurpassed, but “Rome & Jewels,” slightly updated and still vital and affecting, is showing its age.

Jesse Lamont Martin (January 18, 1969) is an actor and singer. He originated the role of Tom Collins on Broadway in the musical Rent and as NYPD Detective Ed Green on Law & Order and Captain Joe West on The Flash. He toured the states with The Acting Company. He appeared in Shakespeare's Rock-in-Roles at the Actors Theatre of Louisville and The Butcher's Daughter at the Cleveland Play House and returned to Manhattan to perform in local theatre, soap operas, and commercials. Finding that auditions, regional theater, and bit parts were no way to support himself, he waited tables at several restaurants around the city. He was serving a pizza when his appearance on Guiding Light aired in the same eatery. He made his Broadway debut in Timon of Athens, and then performed in The Government Inspector. While employed at the Moondance Diner, he met the playwright Jonathan Larson. Larson's musical Rent took the theatre world by storm, with him in the role of gay computer geek/philosophy professor Tom Collins. The update of Bohème earned six Drama Desk Awards, five Obie Awards, four Tony Awards, and the Pulitzer Prize. The West End production of Rent opened with four of the original cast members, including Martin. He played Tad in the concept album of Bright Lights, Big City. He returned to the stage for one of his biggest theater commitments since Law & Order, performing in the productions of The Merchant of Venice and The Winter's Tale as a part of The Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park. He played the roles of Gratiano and King Polixenes, respectively. The two shows were performed in repertory. The Merchant of Venice later transferred to Broadway to the Broadhurst Theater for a limited engagement, in which he reprised his role as Gratiano. He took part in a one-night-only reading benefit of Romeo and Juliet to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CnjmxtCLQ8y/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

OCPL Schedules Events for November, December
Tumblr media
Lunch With Books will be on haitus for one week. There will be no program on Nov. 1. But never fear, we shall return on Nov. 8. See below for the full November through December schedule, including an exciting 2-part People's University mini-series marking the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Apollo 17 mission - the last time humans set foot on the moon (that we know of). Nov. 8, 2022 at Noon:  Evan and Elle with Author Chris Rodell Have you ever loved so hard you'd forgive every sin? Misguided admirers have long declared "Romeo & Juliet" a "timeless" love story. In fact, true timelessness can only be achieved in the places where time itself is off the clock. This is the story of Evan and Elle, a pair of soulmates from ethereal realms where there are nothing but souls. Their story of forbidden love has Shakespearean echoes with one whopper of a logistical catch. Instead of being wooed upon a remote balcony in Italy, Elle is in Heaven while her Romeo is way down in Hell stuck with a really lousy roommate. For their love to flourish, she has to lower Heaven; he must raise Hell. Chris Rodell is a freelance writer of unconventional biographies on Fred Rogers and Arnold Palmer. To learn more about Chris, visit his website at www.chrisrodell.com. FACEBOOK EVENT | LIBRARY CALENDAR Nov. 15, 2022 at Noon:  Memories of Marx Toys with Gary Rider & Roseanna Dakan Keller Founded in August 1919 in New York City by Louis Marx and his brother David, the company’s aim was to “give customers more toy for less money.” They were so successful in this venture, that at one time Marx Toys was the largest toy manufacturer in the world. The Glen Dale facility, in its’ heyday, employed more than 2,000 workers and had multiple buildings in Glen Dale and McMechen. But this story is about the people that made the toys that children around the world loved to have on Christmas morning. Their lives were dedicated to bringing that job and happiness to youngsters that opened those presents on that day and had happiness delivered to their doors. FACEBOOK EVENT | LIBRARY CALENDAR Nov. 22, 2022 at Noon: Dark Hills of Home with Marc Harshman Join us as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our friend Marc Harshman's appointment as Poet Laureate of West Virginia with a reading from his new book, “Dark Hills of Home.” Every poem in the “Dark Hills of Home” had its birth among the foothills and hollows of the western Alleghenies, between the Ohio and Monongahela rivers in the heart of Appalachia--- where the sun rises late and sets early, and the night is never entirely absent. Marc Harshman's “Woman in Red Anorak” won the Blue Lynx Poetry Prize and was published in 2018 by Lynx House Press. His fourteenth children’s book, “Fallingwater: The Building of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Masterpiece,” co-authored with Anna Smucker, was published by Roaring Brook/Macmillan in 2017. He is also co-winner of the 2019 Allen Ginsberg Poetry Award. Poems have been anthologized by Kent State University, the University of Iowa, SPM Publications , University of Georgia, and the University of Arizona. He has been Poet Laureate of West Virginia since 2012. To learn more about Marc, visit his website at marcharshman.com. FACEBOOK EVENT | LIBRARY CALENDAR Nov. 29, 2022 at Noon:  Making Our Future with Folklorist Emily Hilliard In Making Our Future: Visionary Folklore and Everyday Culture in Appalachia, Emily Hilliard draws from her work as state folklorist, exploring contemporary folklife in West Virginia and challenges the common perception of both folklore and Appalachian culture as static, antiquated forms, offering instead the concept of "visionary folklore" as a future-focused, materialist, and collaborative approach to cultural work. Emily is a folklorist and writer based in central Appalachia. She is the former West Virginia state folklorist and the founding director of the West Virginia Folklife Program. Find more of her work at emilyehilliard.com. FACEBOOK EVENT | LIBRARY CALENDAR Dec. 6, 2022 at Noon: “Walking Woody’s Road” with Musician Tom Breiding Warwood native Tom Breiding has been invited to perform at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in Woody's hometown of Okemah, OK for the past four consecutive years and his 2020 release "Love Commits Me Here" is Tom’s most recent tribute the hard wrought labors of mining, steel, and growing up. Tom will provide a musical tribute to Woody Guthrie at Lunch With Books. In addition to providing the songs for the "Fairness at Patriot" and "Keep the Promise" rallies, Tom Breiding was commissioned by the United Mine Workers Union to write and perform original songs for the the 100 year commemoration of the Ludlow Massacre, the 50 year commemoration of the Farmington mine disaster, the International Inaugurations of Officers, and International President Cecil Roberts lifetime award from the Labor Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. The book serves as a warning of how a fair energy transition can be derailed by political failure. Van Nostrand has forty years’ experience in a variety of roles in the energy industry, including positions as a regulator, energy lawyer, and director of a New York-based environmental nongovernmental organization. FACEBOOK EVENT | LIBRARY CALENDAR Dec. 20, 2022 at Noon: Re-imagining the Music of Christmas with the Mazure Brothers Vance and Luke Mazure will be performing duo renditions of classic Christmas songs and jazz standards. BREAKING NEWS - ROYALS VS. ICONIC: THE ROYAL FAMILY DISSOCIATE THEMSELVES FROM THE ARTICLE STATEMENTS, FOLLOWING THE GRIMALLDI ROYAL FAMILY’S FOOTSTEPS
It should have been a quiet day for the Royal Family, but this didn’t happen.
This morning, the King and Queen officially opened the aristocratic season with the annual Garden Party hosted in the Emerald Gardens of Westforth Palace, which are generally closed to the public. The Party was an opportunity to allow the Monarchy to restart with more energy than before and leave the mourning period behind. However, this year’s Garden Party was partially (if not totally) overshadowed by the scandal that has hit the most talked-about couple of recent times, Crown Prince Albert and Crown Princess Helena.
But let's take a step back. Few days ago the notorious Iconic Magazine, which celebrated its 50th anniversary of publication, released a special issue featuring the royal couple and defining them as the “Romeo and Juliet of modern times”. The magazine then examined the relationship that has sparked after the “yacht-gate”, and some of the Iconic’s sources claim that neither Grimalldis nor Hawkthornes spent kind words on the relationship of the two heir apparents. While the Royal Family of Grimalldi quickly released a statement which condems the magazine for its string of lies, the Royal Family of Sovoy applied their “never complain, never explain” policy, making everyone think that there is some truth in Iconic’s article.
However (or luckily), Westforth Palace released a statement soon after the ending of the Garden Party. Personally writted by Queen Margarethe, the statement heavily condemns “all the inaccuracies and lies that appear on the pages of the magazine” and firmly asks to withdraw the issue from the sale.
“Her Majesty was out of her anger and terribly uncomfortable” began Joel Marsh, royal reporter and close source to the Royal Family, “The word “paparazzi” became a sort of taboo within the palace walls. Royal staff is not allowed to pronounce that word in the presence of the Queen or they will be forced to suffer her blind fury”. “Her Majesty is simply worried about her son, as an ordinary mom would do”, claimed another source closed to the Queen. “The media pressure that overwhelmed him after Miss Ortiz’s break up phisically and mentally weakened him. Paparazzi have become more forceful since the relationship was exposed, and the Queen is constantly monitoring his son’s health.”. Regarding the “mediator kiss”, it has been reported that the Duchess of Druevale was “shocked and hurt” by the press’ sharp words, and claimed that “she respects Helena so much, and she is well-seen by the Royal Family”.
While the Queen seems to have taken a fairly clear position, what about the King? Staff court claimed that the King was the one most affected by it. One of Westforth Palace’s butlers leaked a private conversation occurred between His Majesty and King Maximilian, Crown Princess Helena’s grandfather. The two sovereigns talked a lot about the scandal that has arisen in recent days, and they are trying in every way to agree to safeguard both their Families. The butler also reported that the King was personally worried for King Maximilian’s health, and tried to touch the topic in a very calm and delicate way.
Despite the constant denials by both Royal Families, royal fans believe that the fairytale relationship between the two heirs is actually full of anxiety and uncertainty, and only few of them still hope they will be able to overcome all these difficulties.
