Listen I know "Hizashi makes a mixtake for Aizawa" is the obvious route which is why everyone writes it but we must think of the even cuter, much more adorable route of "Aizawa making a mixtape for Hizashi because he knows Hizashi likes them" and trying to use Oboro and Nemuri as his music testers except they both have WILDLY different tastes and ideas so his end product is a veritable mess that he will be embarrassed about in his adult life but which Hizashi cherishes anyway

Why I think Hizashi could have been more fucked up by Oboro's death
Tumblr media
To start with, his life started with his quirk hurting other people. Whether you subscribe to the headcanon that he was orphaned because of that or not, it's definitely the kind of thing that would fuck somebody up. But despite his powerful, dangerous, terrifying quirk, he still gets into The hero school, where he can use it to help people instead.
Tumblr media
And then instead it's taken from him, twisted around, and used in the attack that kills his best friend. Maybe he didn't deal the killing blow himself, but he followed an order that he should have second guessed. He wasn't there with his friends to help them. He's part of the reason that Oboro is dead. He can't even allow himself to grieve then because his quirk had already done enough damage. And that's going to fuck him up even more.
Tumblr media
So now there's Shouta. He's obviously fucked up by this. He was right there and couldn't stop anything. He didn't even realize Oboro was dead until after it was all over. We're clearly shown that he's fucked up by this. But. Oboro's death also motivates him to become a better, stronger hero. Is he coping well? No. But his poor coping mechanisms seem to be entirely self contained.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Hizashi? Shouta is Hizashi's coping mechanism. We see that he's dedicated himself to making sure Shouta's okay, trying to pull him back into things. But he's also build up a wall around himself that he only lets down around Shouta. Except Shouta doesn't even see it. He's just...shut everything that could hurt him out. Including Hizashi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last thing we see of them is Shouta erasing Hizashi's quirk. And then we're not even shown if Hizashi is around Shouta in the first few years after graduation. Shouta spent the rest of his time at UA learning to be self reliant and cementing the idea that he was better off on his own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Hizashi's ability to cope seems to have been entirely dependent on Shouta's presence. And he lost him too. And that had to have fucked him up even more.

You don't get it, the inspiration to teach that the rooftop squad felt came from Shirakumo, who sacrificed himself for those kindergarten kids but whose voice reached Aizawa beyond violence, being death, to teach him one last time.
And then the rooftop squad threw themselves into teaching with a fierce love that lead Midnight to sacrificing herself too, her voice reaching her students one last time to guide them, just like Shirakumo's did.
Then Aizawa threw himself into facing AFO, he lost his leg anf his eye and continues to fight for them he lives for them because he knows what is like to have someone dying for you and he doesn't want that, that's not the future he wants.
And Present Mic does his best but he already lost two of them and he is watching the only one left suffering hell, slowly losing body parts, slowly coming undone. Mic lost his voice (remember the symbolism of using a megaphone? When Uraraka gave his speech at UA when Deku came back??), he lost his friends, he's not gonna lose Aizawa too.
All this, ALL THIS, finally knowing that Shirakumo survived and went through years and years of the worst torture, but somehow his love for teaching stayed beyond the personality change. Now you have Kurogiri announcing he's Tomura Shigaraki's protector, you have Kurogiri fighting Shirakumo over control because one of them wants to save their friends, the other wants to protect his kid.
The didn't create a Hero Agency together, but if you think about it, they all held their first promise. From the day they swore to protect sushi, they have guided and taught, they've given their lives, their well-being, they've done the impossible and challenged the most powerful forces, all in the name of protection.
Beyond the rooftop, plus ultra to all us.

Okay, but can the Rooftop Squad fandom please talk more about Hizashi's and Kayama's feelings about Oboro's deaths? Like, their trauma's and guilt are just as valid as Aizawa's is. The fandom always talks about how much Shirakumo's death affected Aizawa, and Hizashi is touched on a bit sometimes, but we really need to talk about Mic and Midnight more. Not only did Hizashi lose one of his bestfriends, but he has to deal with the guilt that his quirk is the one who lead to the building collapsing in the first place. Of course, it was Garvey using Mic's quirk, but it was still his quirk that killed his own best friend. And than on Midnight's side, she is the one who gave the boys to be at the agency in the first place. If she hadn't given them the invite or maybe just had gotten to the scene to help a bit faster, non of what happened. They were both also Shirakumo's friends, no matter how long they knew him, they were friends and a tragedy like that leaves damage. Kayama and Mic deserve more love

Are people genuinely surprised about the Kurogiri thing when Mic has threatened to turn people into soup before. He can not surprise me anymore after dropping that zinger.
no but TRULY.
people out here see our boy act like a fool 99% of the time and fail to realize that a.) that's exactly what it is - an ACT, and b.) the other 1% of the time he's threatening to maim and/or liquify anyone dumb enough to hurt the people he cares about.
and like, the kurogiri thing is especially frustrating, because despite certain people's (over)reactions, that patently wasn't mic at his most merciless and vengeful. we've seen what mic is like when he's truly Pissed Off, and this wasn't that by a long shot. this wasn't even mic making a ruthless, yet necessary decision - this was mic hesitating when making that impossible decision.
mic wasn't thinking, 'kurogiri is an abomination who must die before he hurts everyone i care about again' (a thought that would be completely understandable, if not entirely justifiable, given all that he's gone through). mic was thinking about shirakumo, and about aizawa, and about all the good memories they had together, and about all that's gone wrong since then, and about how if shirakumo isn't in there anymore in any way that can be saved, it would be best if he just disappeared for good.
even the language mic uses in those panels (in both the official and fan translations) is very telling. he's not angry or filled with hatred and ill-intent. he's using words like 'please' and 'do us a favor' - he's being kind, or at the very least polite, and we all know how little mic usually cares about politeness, especially when he's upset. (see again: his threat to be-soupify anyone involved in kurogiri's creation, plus his very open disdain/disgust when dealing with the doctor.)
and in the end, he doesn't even go for the kill! when he very well could have! it was the crunch time to end all crunch times - quite possibly the last and best chance he'd get to take out kurogiri and deal a huge blow against the villains - and he still chose to reach out to shirakumo one last time! even after thinking that it'd be better if kurogiri/shirakumo disappeared/'faded away,' mic still can't let go of the possibility that he's 'still [their] friend from back then,' and he calls out for shirakumo! and it works!
... kind of? idk, we still haven't gotten any definitive answers, but from where i'm standing, it's looking like we're gonna get some sort of kurogiri/shirakumo fusion, and i am very much looking forward to seeing how that mess will turn out.
anyway. stan mic is what i'm saying, even and ESPECIALLY when he threatens to turn people into soup. and also when he's contemplating murdering his best friend for the sake of his other best friend. obviously. <3

Hizashi, Aizawa and Oboro all having the same fingerless black gloves in their second year was 100% because Hizashi already had his punk aesthetic and ended up giving them some extra pairs in that nervous kinda "I mean you don't have to use em or anything haha I just thought it'd help with your grip and stuff" and Oboro and Aizawa are just [with stars in their eyes] "no I'm going to wear them every single day I love you"

My next ‘bigger’ project. I’m in the process of doing all of Chapter 60 of vigilantes.
It’s one of my personal favorite ones, so I’m quite eagered. In a perfect world, I’ll have one to two pages of it each Sunday

we really don’t talk enough about how Midnight loved Oboro so much and how broken she must have been at his death huh
like the only one we ever see greieving in fandom is Aizawa, is that just because his coping mechanisms are the unhealthiest ones???
that doesn’t mean he’s sadder than the others, and I’m lowkey sick of seeing his unhealthy coping being seen as a fun or charming character trait when it’s really not
