Plant of the Day
Thursday 23 September 2021
In the walled garden of Easton Lodge Garden, Essex, UK, there was a stunning border of dahlias including this Dahlia 'Penhill Watermelon’. This cultivar has large flowers on strong stems and so will be a wonderful cut flower. Dahlias are grown from tubers or cuttings in the spring and need winter protection.

Plant of the Day
Sunday 13 October 2019
A range of Dahlia cultivar flowers greeted visitors in the porch of Great Dixter, East Sussex, UK. The largest flower was Dahlia ‘Emory Paul’ described by one supplier as “The king of the crazy dahlia brigade with huge flamboyant flowers the size of a football, in a luscious, rich pink”. It certainly looked impressive growing in the garden making a spectacular contribution to the autumnal display as did Dahlia ‘Hillcrest Candy’, a pink, medium semi-cactus form.

Plant of the Day

The ideal tender perennials for an autumn display are the plant group known as the ‘Decorative Dahlias’ which have fully double flowerheads with flat or slightly incurved florets. A cultivar from this group includes the compact, herbaceous perennial Dahlia 'Crème de Cassis' with pale lilac petals with purple backs. The root tubers of these plants will need to be lifted and stored over the winter in a dark, cool, frost-free building.
