Senate Republicans will try to block Feinstein's Judiciary replacement

THEIR OBJECTIONS COMPLICATE DEMOCRATS' PATH OUT OF THE JUDICIAL NOMINATION SLOWDOWN CAUSED BY THE CALIFORNIA SENATOR'S LENGTHY ABSENCE

A second Republican senator on the Judiciary Committee announced their opposition Monday to temporarily replacing Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) on the panel, adding to Democrats’ woes over how to move forward on stalled judicial nominations caused by Feinstein’s health-related absence.

Feinstein, who at 89 is the oldest member of the Senate, announced last week that she had asked Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) to temporarily replace her on the Senate Judiciary Committee. That followed calls from some congressional Democrats for Feinstein, who has been absent from the chamber since February, to resign from the Senate.

Her absence has stalled confirmations of President Biden’s judicial nominees, given that only judges with some Republican support can move to the floor without her tiebreaking vote on the committee. She has provided no timeline for her return to Washington after recovering from a case of shingles. The Senate is narrowly divided and under Democratic control, 51-49.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) announced on Twitter on Monday that she would “not go along with Chuck Schumer’s plan to replace Senator Feinstein on the Judiciary Committee and pack the court with activist judges.”

She joins Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), a close ally of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), in publicly announcing she will not support a temporary replacement for Feinstein.

Their objections add up to a major headache for Democrats, who were hoping to quickly solve the political and tactical problem of Feinstein this week by replacing her on the committee. Most committee assignments for both Republicans and Democrats are passed without fanfare or controversy by unanimous voice votes on the Senate floor. But now with Republicans lining up to object to the temporary change, it’s clear replacing Feinstein on the committee would take 60 votes to approve, which means at least 10 Republicans would need to back the measure.

Feinstein’s absence has given Republicans leverage to block judicial nominees even while they’re in the minority. That makes it less likely there will be 10 Republicans willing to cross the aisle and help Democrats temporarily replace her.

McConnell, who as Senate majority leader blocked President Barack Obama from filling a Supreme Court vacancy in 2016, has not yet commented on his view of the replacement.

Cotton shared an article in the conservative publication The Federalist in announcing his objection to temporarily replacing Feinstein, noting that “the task of persuading 10 Republicans to cooperate with the President’s judicial agenda will prove even more difficult if Sen. Mitch McConnell … holds the line.” The article praised McConnell for his “hard-nosed judiciary tactics” in the past.

On Monday, Schumer said he spoke to Feinstein a few days ago and that she’s “very hopeful” she will return to Washington soon. Schumer said he would discuss with his caucus which Senator he would put forward to replace Feinstein.

“We should have a temporary replacement until she returns and we’re hopeful Republicans will join us on that,” he said, adding that he planned to bring the matter to the floor this week. “It’s the only right and fair thing to do.”

If Schumer’s attempt to replace Feinstein fails this week, calls for her resignation on the left may grow. Reps. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) asked Feinstein to step down last week, citing her long absence. Feinstein was hospitalized in March for treatment of shingles, and she has missed at least 60 votes this year.

“While she has had a lifetime of public service, it is obvious she can no longer fulfill her duties. Not speaking out undermines our credibility as elected representatives of the people,” Khanna said. Feinstein announced she would not run for reelection earlier this year.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), another member of the Judiciary Committee, said Sunday she plans to take Feinstein “at her word” that she hopes to return to Washington soon, but that if her absence stretches on for “months,” it is time to rethink the situation.

“If this goes on month after month after month, then she’s gonna have to make a decision with her family and her friends about what her future holds, because this isn’t just about California; it’s also about the nation,” Klobuchar said on ABC’s “This Week.” “So it’s going to become an issue as the months go by. But I’m taking her at her word that she’s going to return.”

Other lawmakers have defended Feinstein, with Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) telling reporters it was “interesting” to see the resignation calls. “I don’t know what political agendas are at work that are going after Sen. Feinstein in that way,” she said last week. “I’ve never seen them go after a man who was sick in the Senate in that way.”

As soon as you wake up, you know this is going to be an awful day...

It's not so much a matter of intuition but of how terrible everything feels. There is a heaviness to your mind, persistent and disorienting, an overwhelming haze. Your nose is clogged, you’re burning up.

It’s a sneeze that fully wakes you up. Your brain clears a little. You're sick.

Dante spends from two to three minutes pacing like a man—demon—possessed, you lose track of his foreign rambling shortly before he halts. You lay in bed and even with your fever, you can’t seem to contain your amusement. Dante stops, fiddles with his hands, and falters under your glance like a kicked puppy.

“I don’t get sick, I think,” Dante explains, he shrugs sheepishly “You’re not going to die, right?”

His question makes you laugh, and your laugh makes everything everywhere hurt. When you wince, Dante’s frown deepens.

“I’m not dying, Dan.”

“Okay, okay,” he nods seriously. Dante nods again. He seems to decide this is a situation that is completely out of his control, because he adds, “Tell me what to do so I can help.”

Lilith presses a soft hand to your forehead, her touch is cool and comforting—like marble—, she brushes your hair/fringe back softly, nails brushing against your scalp. If Lilith was a witch, you would wonder whether she’s putting a spell on you.

Whatever she does, the effect disappears as soon as she draws her hand back.

“Well, you have a fever, love,” Lilith nods. She sounds as concerned as she is curious.

You sniff, “I hadn’t noticed.”

The Succubus ignores your words in favor of rolling her sleeves with the determination of a person on their way to war, ready to tackle any issue thrown her way. Lilith grins at you like she knows what she’s doing.

“I’ve been on Earth—well, around humans—long enough! Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing,” she claims “How about you take a nap while I get you something warm to eat?”

Josh and surprises have never mixed well—you don’t know how he could have been prepared in advance for your sudden illness. You don’t even open your mouth to complain and Josh simply knows something is wrong. He’s been familiar with your tics and quirks for over a decade, it’d be impossible for him not to notice.

“Are you okay?” Josh questions quietly. Almost instantly he winces, “That was a pretty dumb question, sorry.”

You still answer for the sake of it, “I feel like a truck ran me over.”

“You’re looking pretty good for a victim of a traffic accident,” he chuckles “You don’t need a doctor, do you? I can call one.”

“Aren’t you—” a loud sneeze interrupts you “one?”

You’ve offended Josh—as offended as he can feel when it involves you—he presses a hand to his chest like he’s nursing a stab wound.

“Not really. Not yet,” Josh hastily corrects. Deep in thought, he presses a warm hand against your forehead, then he smiles coyly “I can make an exception for you, though.”

When you explain you’re feeling ill, Villanelle’s eyes fill with concern, and then they glow. You know that look all too well. It’s the one Villanelle gets whether she gets a sudden idea she wants to test out. The realization must register on your face, as the witch is reaching out to you reassuringly.

“It’s not a bad idea, I swear! Remember, I do this all the time!”

By ‘this’, Villanelle means all the elderly inhabitants of Blackburn, their neverending lists of maladies, and her magical solutions. It makes so much sense why they worked now that you know.

“I swear you’ll be up and running in a jiffy!”

Villanelle leaves and returns half an hour later with a potion that tastes like chocolate. Your fever is gone as soon as it touches your lips.

Victor is one of the most dependent people you know, when you let him know you’re not feeling well, he doesn’t overreact or make a big deal of your situation. You think that, for Victor to openly show some concern towards you, you’d probably have to be on the brink of death.

It‘s a thought you might have complained about, but Victor doesn’t give you the chance, he pushes on your shoulder until you’re laying down, leaves briefly, and returns with a wet rag. When he presses it to your forehead, it’s cool enough that it makes you sigh.

“There’s a bottle of water on your bedside table. Drink it when the rag dries,” Victor instructs “I’ll be back with some soup— you need the protein.”

“Will you keep me company then?” you pout theatrically.

A sigh leaves his lips. Then, a reluctant, “Fine.”

“What do you mean you’re ‘sick’?”

“… It means I’m sick, Aliyah,” you sniff.

The genie has been keeping her distance—Aliyah stands tersely by the door, you almost expect her to run away—since she found out you were ill, narrowed eyes fixed on you like she’s expecting you to pull a nasty prank on her.

“Oh,” Aliyah frowns “That’s bad?”

“Yes. It is bad.”

“Boohoo. Just another thing to add to the list— Another flaw of humanity,” you wouldn’t be surprised to find out if that list existed. Aliyah probably takes it everywhere with her, she’s probably memorized it like a priest would the Bible “Is there any medicine that can fix… ‘that’?”

It’s like she’s speaking of a tumor and not a mild flu. Aliyah shuffles closer as she apparently realizes you’re not dying because of your ‘faulty nature’.

“You can keep me company,” you say with a small smile “I’d feel a lot better.”

Aliyah blinks at you with what you initially interpret to be murderous intent. Whatever she feels, she doesn’t voice. Hesitately, the genie sits by your side.

Nathan barely bats an eye when you complain about your predicament, it’s like it goes in one ear and out the other. The nearly-fallen angel invades your room like he owns the place, he flops down next to you and grins with forced innocence when you look at him in suspicion.

“What is it?” Nathan even pouts, the bastard.

“What are you planning?”

“Me? Planning?” he snorts “I leave that to the higher-ups.”

Nathan smirks, his big hand lifts until it comes to a stop in front of your eyes. You, of course, watch him carefully like he’s a lion ready to pounce. Despite your attentive glance, you can’t avoid Nathan’s finger and the way it flicks your forehead.

“You—” you gasp, but the surprise comes for another reason entirely unrelated to Nathan’s attack. Or not, given the fact that it was that very motion that cured you of your illness “Nath—”

“Are you going to grovel at my feet and praise me like I’m a God,” Nathan smirks with mischief “You sure know how to make a guy feel good about himself if that’s the case.”

You sigh in exasperation, though a fond smile of appreciation finds your lips.

“Forget it,” you say.

Eden has always been much more observant than you give her credit for. She knows of your illness as soon as she sees you, and she frowns with a challenge like it’s a physical foe she can strike and beat into submission.

“Damn,” is the only thing she says for a few moments. Eden approaches your side, takes your temperature with the back of her hand, reaches inside the bedside table and pulls out a packet of tissue when you sniff “Does anything hurt?”

“Everything does,” you pout.

“Don’t be dramatic. You’ll be fine in no time,” Eden tuts “You should sleep a little longer.”

You do and, when you wake up, it’s to Eden handing you a bowl of soup. She quietly offers to keep you company for as long as you wish her to and smiles when you nod your head yes.

Hello! I just followed you for the games but also looked through your blog and see you're a movie buff? I have autism and was just wondering if you know any movie with a autistic character thats done respectfully and doesn't make us look stupid or use stereotypes?

Hi, anon! Thanks for the follow, and yes, I actually do!

There's a really great indie film called Snow Cake, starring Sigourney Weaver and the late Alan Rickman. I saw it when I was in high school, and it's a shame because not very many people know it exists. It won a few awards, but only released in Canada and the UK to a limited audience. It only pulled in about $1.3 million, but from what I understand, a lot of the proceeds went to autism research and education. Sigourney also prepared for the role by learning about autism and getting coached by Ros Blackburn, a woman with autism who is an author and speaker about autism and Asperger's syndrome.

While I myself do not have autism and am by no means an expert on the subject, my cousin is both deaf and autistic and he loves this movie. The plot is as follows:

Alex Hughes (Alan Rickman), an older, reclusive Englishman visiting Canada for an unspecified reason, gets roped into picking up a hitchhiker; an eccentric teenager whom he slowly and unexpectedly comes to enjoy the company of. Sadly, while making their way to their destination, they get hit by a drunk driver. The young girl dies immediately while Alex crawls away with a nosebleed and a harmless bump on the head. Plagued with survivor's guilt, Alex makes his way to the girl's house to offer his condolences to her mother, only to learn that she (Sigourney Weaver) has ASD.

Sigourney's portrayal of a person living with what I believe is level two autism is probably one of the most respectful and realistic I've seen in media to date. I find that most movies and TV shows go from one extreme to the other, with the autistic character being a high-functioning, gifted, eidetic-endowed, autodidactic superhuman genius or a screaming, reckless, helpless, frightened, completely dependant child that constantly needs saving and merely serves as a plot device.

Sigourney's character, Linda, avoids both overused tropes. She's an adult, she's mature, she works a typical day job, and she's mostly independent, only needing help every now and then with menial tasks that make her uncomfortable. She's not an infallible genius, but she is smart and witty, as well as very much aware of what's going on around her; she just doesn't react or express her emotions in a way a neurotypical person likely would. This is especially hard for Alex to come to terms with, as Linda is very verbal, lacks any filter, relies on strict routines and compulsions to get through her day, and appears to be unaffected by her daughter's death.

However, as the story progresses, Alex comes to understand Linda and interprets how she feels via her mannerisms. This allows him to connect with her in ways he never thought possible, having spent most of his life avoiding others himself. Like many people with autism, Linda struggles with social settings, doesn't like being touched, and finds joy in simplicity, but she too develops a beautiful relationship with Alex, opening up and accepting him into her life.

There's honestly so much to this film (I barely scratched the surface) and I don't want to spoil what happens, so I'll just highly recommend you give it a watch. It's rife with comedy (though never at Linda's expense), drama, heart, and soul. It was also written by Angela Pell, mother of an autistic son. Her goal, it seems, was to show that autism is not a curse, that people with autism are people, not plot devices, and that a little education on the subject goes a long way. I'd argue she succeeded.

and it's getting serious as we speak. i didn't think he could heal me so seamlessly. people are talking, calling me mentally insane. they think he's cunning and not good for me. they think i'm naïve and oblivious. but remarks and certitudes aside, imma let this guy take me on a rollercoaster ride.

he can give me whiplash, anything, i really don’t care.

his smile so brightly that i almost forget its nightshade outside. he stands up and slides the ring down my finger. the gemstone is absolutely mesmerising. i feel like i've been sucked into a black hole and then somehow have ended up at the bottom of the mariana trench.

“do you like it? if you don't, i can always take it back to the artisan and~"

"are you serious? i love it. i...i don't even wanna begin to ask how much it~"

"then don't," isaac intercepts with a chuckle. "it doesn't matter anyway. and i know how you said you didn't want one because the idea of a ring linked to marriage is just something the romans made up and everyone decided to follow it, but i wanted you to have one."

"you know, i could've genuinely been happy with maccas, no lie."

"which is why i ordered takeout, too. and a lot of it.”

i squeal and jump into his muscular arms, snaking my legs around his torso. i crash my lips into his and he stumbles backward.

"wow, calm down, luv," he regains his balance and firmly encircles his arms around my waist. "our faces are still all over the news. we don't want to get yet another noise complaint with the cops showing up at our door this time."

"first time was just sex. people are such prudes nowadays."

he chuckles, "well, to be fair, you were loud."

"your fault anyway," i hit his shoulder playfully.

"you said to go hard and i did. not my fault you couldn't take it."

"shut up!"

his marble eyes settle for a shade of green that isn't on the spectrum. he glances at my mouth and now i can't see the heavenly colour anymore.

i gulp, recalling something that has been on my mind lately. "isaac?"

he looks back into my eyes.

"...larissa called me today."

he sets me down and turns away.

"she wants to see me," i speak to his stiff back. "i told her it's still too early, but she has something to tell me that's too important to say over the phone."

"rosé, we spoke about this. your parents have put a crack load of money into having you found. they think i'm some fucking criminal for beating up that kid and whatever the fuck else."

"but~"

"i'm sorry, luv, now's not the time. she has to wait," he decides without even thinking about it.

"she's my friend and i'm her friend."

"rosé."

"isaac, pl~"

"rosé!"

i flinch.

he exhales, "look, babe, you can leave whenever you want. the door's right there. take my car, whatever, i don't care. the last thing i'll do is stop you. however, you have to understand, i can't come with you, not now at least."

"but why can't you? i don't get it."

he reframes from answering.

"isaac."

"rosé, have you even seen half of the shit they are writing in the papers about us? or what's playing over the news?"

"no, because why should i? it's all lies anyways."

"they think i've kidnapped you," he tells me.

"and i'll tell them that you didn't ~ it's as simple as that."

he sighs and mutters, "some part of me knew this was a bad idea."

"wait, are you blaming all of this on me?" i take offense.

"you know i'm not," he states blatantly. "listen," he shakes his head, grabbing his coat, "i'm gonna go out for a drive. i'll..i'll be back shortly," and he opens the apartment's ivory door before stepping out and shutting it after himself.

great, now i'm left alone once again. why does he always leave when things get the least bit heated? he never says too much, he says just enough, but 'just enough' is not enough for me to fully understand where he's coming from.

rapid knocks on the door jolts me back to reality.

"...order for no. 30010."

"oh uhh.." i scratch my head, looking at the multiple takeaway bags he's holding up.

"already paid for, mam."

"oh sweet." i was wondering how i would pay for them. "thank you."

my ring finger catches his attention when it sparkles due to the hotel's hallway lights reflecting off it. i can't help but feel incredibly admired. isaac really does have good taste. he just needs to come back asap 'cause i don't think i could finish all this food on my own.

"you're welcome, have a good night."

Dante

I don't want to reveal too much about Inferno because it kinda defeats the purpose of exploring the place yourselves lol but let's just say that somewhere… there's a certain area… where people can like... fight… and Dante is pretty good... There's a ranking... He's among the top 10 in that list...?

Dante smokes like a fucking chimney but always insists he isn't addicted. Will most likely avoid doing it in front of people if they were bothered by it tho

As an Aeshma (warrior Demons of Wrath) his body temperature is pretty high. When he gets really mad there might be a slight risk of fire.

Lilith

They are one of the managers of the strip club Paradise Lost (which is very girlboss of them imo).

One of the highest rankings Succubi, also one of the few who care the least about social rankings. As a Succubus, their power is mostly revolved around their voice and how convincing they can be.

Insanely good with numbers.

Josh

He's the youngest of three siblings. Josh's older sister also has the same ability as he does.

Josh is often considered the golden child (of the Guerreros and of Blackburn) but he really hates that title.

He would've liked to be a nurse but his parents gently swayed him towards a doctorate instead.

Villanelle

She has had two sets of foster parents. The first couple who adopted her weren't really the best.

Villanelle realized she was a witch when she was around eleven-twelve. Funnily enough, most witches and wizards live their entire lifes and never come to know of their nature.

You've already seen it in the demo but Villie has visions of the future. Her power though is more like... having Earth's timeline shoved into her face.

Victor

Aka Nemesis, the number 1 Demon Hunter in Entity. Let's just say he only joined in the first place because the highest higher up is… pretty convincing. That was nine years ago (if my math doesn't fail me). None of his partners survived lol let's hope Alekto is different 🤞

He likes card games 🥺 and wearing very expensive accessories (mostly watches)

Victor would actually want to have children but has kinda accepted that's kind of... complicated given his situation.

Aliyah

Aliyah claims to hate humans but there are a few very obvious exceptions. This Genie has a soft spot for a certain kind of people.

She surprisingly loves sleeping. She loves it so much she's spent more than a few years straight napping.

As Genies go, her abilities are quite limited to the whims of those who own the lamp. In the meantime, all their power goes as far as being smoke and mirrors (illusions, or plain nothing).

Nathan

Nathan is a guardian angel so he's basically at the bottom of the social ladder (at least prior to falling lol). He's also pretty young things considered, most angels are old old.

He wasn't all that good at being a guardian either? I mean personally I wouldn't trust him to take care of a goldfish

Don't let him trick you! He knows jack shit about actual philosophy (reference to a sneak peek)! Nathan likes having many interests and broadening his horizons tho, to keep conversations interesting. He could literally chat you up about anything.

Eden

He's living my dwarfless Snow White cottage core dream and I'm so jealous fr

So good with his hands, Eden really likes woodcrafting and crafting in general. The life of isolation is pretty boring despite its very attractive appeals (pls me too)

King Solomon lore but he used to have very powerful ring! In their family line (and in my story lol) those rings are their white irises. Yeah very powerful.

Patton

Virgil stormed into the throne room, holding a scroll in his hand. King Thomas waved his servants off, not noticing when one of them stayed behind.

“A contest?” The paper nearly tore as Virgil’s grip tightened. “You think a contest is going to help Patton find someone good enough for him?”

“It’s out of my control.” The king’s voice was steady. “Queen Azure has made it quite clear that she wants to merge our two kingdoms. She cannot do anything if Patton is already married before he is coronated.”

Virgil bit his tongue, taking a deep breath. “In that case, I suppose it is the best way. You are allowing him to choose his fate, even if he has to choose early. But how will he know whose intentions are true? Patton could choose someone who is deceitful.”

“There is nothing stopping you from entering.”

The knowing tone in Thomas’s voice had Virgil turning a deep red. “I have no idea what you -”

“V.” The interruption was gentle. Virgil slowly closed his mouth, allowing the king to speak. “I’ve known you since you were up to my knee. I have seen the way you look at him. You worry, I know. You think you are not good enough. But know this - I think you are more than good enough.”

Virgil’s next words were scarcely louder than a whisper. “What if he chooses someone else?”

“Patton will choose who he feels is best.” Thomas stepped closer, putting a hand on Virgil’s shoulder. “If he feels that is you, I will be thrilled. If not, then I know you will still protect him until your dying breath.”

Virgil gave a sharp nod, blinking quickly. “Thank you, Your Majesty.”

“V.”

“Thank you, Thomas.”

With a wave of his hand, Thomas excused Virgil. He waited until the footsteps had faded before he spoke. “Roman.”

The servant froze on his tiptoes.

Thomas turned, laughing at the sight. “Please, come here.”

Wringing his hands, Roman stepped forward until he stood before the king. He kept his head down. Thomas was a good king, but Roman knew he had disobeyed.

“Hey,” Thomas gently reached out, tilting Roman’s head up. “You are allowed to look at me.”

“Your Majesty -”

“Please, call me Thomas.”

“King Thomas...I did not mean to be disrespectful. I merely wished to know what the contest was for.” As Roman spoke, he tried to look down again.

Thomas gently pushed his chin back up. “Roman, everyone has a natural curiosity. It is quite alright that you stayed.”

Roman nodded slowly, terrified of saying something wrong.

“What interests you about the contest?”

His cheeks warmed. “I have special interest in the prince.”

“And what about my son interests you?”

There was no malice in Thomas’s voice. When Roman forced himself to meet the King’s eyes, he saw nothing but kindness reflecting back. “The prince...he treats us like people. As do you, but he treats me as though I were a childhood friend. His kindness knows no bounds, much like his perchance for sweets.”

Thomas laughed. “Yes, he does enjoy the desserts.”

“He cares so much about everyone...I worry that someday he will meet someone who is the opposite.” Tears blurred Roman’s vision. He wiped them away, his voice trembling. “Such a kind heart can cause death.”

Calloused thumbs brushed Roman’s tears from his face. “Just as I told Sir Virgil, I will tell you. Nothing is stopping you from entering the contest.”

“Sir Virgil is much closer to the prince. He will win.”

King Thomas smiled. “Perhaps he is, but you do have a fortnight to prepare. You never know what will happen until you try.”

Determination entered Roman’s gaze. He stood tall, puffing out his chest.

“I will do my best to win your son’s hand.” He started to walk away before he stopped and turned back. “Apologies, King Thomas. Do I have permission to go?”

“Permission granted.”

As soon as Roman was gone, King Thomas headed out of the throne room. He retired to his personal library, opting to take some of his free time to read.

Or he would have, if the court mage had not entered in a hurry.

“King Thomas, my apologies, but I must -”

“Is this about the contest?”

Logan blinked. “How did you -”

“You are not the first to ask me about it, though I do expect that you are the last.” Closing his book, he turned to the mage, giving his full attention. “I suspect you also think it is a bad idea.”

“That would not be my phrasing, but yes.” Thomas waited, knowing that Logan was one of the most intelligent people in the kingdom. “Why would you have such a contest? There is no logical reasoning - unless...Queen Azure. Her attempts to merge our kingdoms have grown in frequency. If Patton...this is so he can choose.”

“Exactly.”

Logan’s steely gaze pierced through the king. “Is there a restriction on who may enter this contest?”

Thomas smirked, merely shaking his head.

“Good. Then I shall see you tomorrow.” Logan hesitated for a moment. “Unless you require my assistance in any way, shape, or form?”

“Logan, you’re excused.”

Just before Logan left the room, Patton flew through the door. He tripped, sending himself and Logan crashing to the floor.

With a wave of his arm, Logan stopped their descent and righted the two of them.

Patton flashed him a sunny smile. “Thank you, Lolo!”

Logan’s cheeks grew warm at the nickname. “It was no trouble, Patton.”

Thomas held back his laughter as Patton threw his arms around the mage. Logan looked ready to spontaneously combust.

“If you’ll excuse me…”

Patton let go, turning to Thomas, completely missing Logan’s burning face. The mage disappeared as quickly as he could.

“Father, I love the idea of a contest!” Patton squealed, bouncing on his toes. “Mean old Queen Azure won’t get her hands on our kingdom now.”

“It appears that you figured it out before your suitors.” Thomas said as he got out of his chair.

Confusion filled Patton’s face. “Suitors?”

“I have had three different men talk to me about the contest today.” Thomas slid the book into its place. He turned to find Patton hiding a smile behind his fingers. “It appears that you have quite the choice to make.”

The morning of the contest, Thomas made his way to Patton’s chambers. He knocked on the door, hearing loud footsteps before it was pulled open.

“Morning, Father!”

“Good morning, Patton.” Thomas began smoothing out his son’s mussed hair. “How did you sleep?”

“Not too well.” Patton admitted. “Nerves kept me awake.”

“That means you will not make a rash decision.” Reaching out, Thomas pulled Patton into a hug. He kissed the top of Patton’s dark hair. “Go with what your heart says.”

“You always tell me that!”

“Because it is the truth.” Thomas let go, stepping back toward the door. He could hear the servants coming down the hall to prepare Patton for the day. “A heart like yours will never steer you wrong.”

Thomas was whisked away, leaving Patton to his servants.

Patton never particularly liked when the servants helped him get ready. They were all a bit too rough. His skin bruised easily, something they never seemed to notice.

Once he was in his royal attire, which made him itch, he was taken out to the courtyard. Thomas sat in their shaded box, the seat to his right empty. Patton took his place, before looking out to the subject that had gathered.

“How many?” He whispered.

“Twelve.” The king whispered back, before he stood to give the instructions. “Thank you all for gathering here today. As you know, Prince Patton is to be coronated just after his eighteenth birthday. Today, he is to choose who he shall wed. Twelve of you have taken it upon yourselves to sign up for this contest. All we ask is that you show us something that explains who you are as a person. Patton will have some time to deliberate, but he shall choose before the sun sets tonight.”

Thomas sat down, waving to the Captain of the Guard.

“Toby Merlot.”

The boy did some acrobatics, gathering plenty of attention from Patton. When he stuck his landing, the prince rose to his feet, clapping.

As the rest of the men performed, Patton did the same each time. Some of the men grew frustrated, unsure of who the prince was going to choose.

“Sir Virgil Kensington.”

“Vee!” Patton squealed excitedly. He shrieked with joy as Virgil rode out on a horse.

Virgil expertly steered the horse around, maneuvering through the small obstacle course the guards had set up. Once he’d cleared the highest jump, he dismounted and handed the horse off. He bowed to the prince, giving him a wink when he straightened up.

As Virgil headed off, the Captain returned to his list. “Master Logan Blackburn.”

“Lolo!”

The mage flushed at the nickname. He moved to the middle of the circle, breathing deeply to center himself.

With a wave of his hand, the lights dimmed. Logan concentrating, turning the lights into a wondrous display. His finale was a dragon that moved toward the royals, fizzling into thin air just before it reached them.

Patton grinned, letting out a loud cheer for his longtime friend and tutor.

“The final suitor - Roman Sparrow.”

“Ro?” Patton whispered, a smile appearing as he saw the servant head to the center. When he noticed how shaky Roman was, Patton called out, “You can do it!”

The prince’s words caused a surge of confidence in the young servant. Roman took in a deep breath before he began to sing.

The words carried the story of a young girl. A girl locked in a tower because she was not beautiful. A girl who broke free and saved herself, falling for a princess who loved her equally in return.

As the final note rang out, Patton was surprised to feel tears on his cheeks. He leapt to his feet, clapping as hard as he could.

Thomas rose to his feet and the noise quieted. “Patton will now deliberate -”

“No.”

“No?” Thomas asked, turning to his son. “What do you mean?”

“You told me to follow my heart.” Patton said. “My heart has already chosen.”

Thomas gave his son a smile. “By all means, who has won your heart?”

“Sir Virgil.” Patton said. Cheers erupted from the crowd, but he held up a hand. “Master Logan. And Roman.”

Whispers began to spread through the crowd.

“What does this mean?”

“Can he do that?”

Thomas put a hand on Patton’s shoulder, turning to the crowd once more. “My son has chosen! Virgil, Logan, Roman. If you will join us in the throne room.”

The three men glanced at each other before nodding, allowing the Captain to lead them away.

“Thank you all for joining us.” Thomas said as Patton hurried after the men. He started to make his way to the castle. “I will see you all at the Grand Feast!”

By the time Thomas entered the throne room, the four men were all talking at once. When they noticed his presence, they silenced immediately.

Sir Virgil stepped forward. At Thomas’s nod, he spoke. “You wanted Patton to choose who was best for him.”

“And he made that decision. Each of you came to me with concerns. Each of you cares deeply for my son.” Thomas smiled at the group. “Patton has always had a big heart. I believe it is big enough for three.”

Patton looked at the three of them. “I know it is early to say this, but I love you. All of you.”

There was a split second of silence before Virgil darted into Patton’s arms. Roman followed suit, sighing as Logan wrapped his arms around all of them.

Thomas watched the scene, knowing that his son had made the perfect choice.
