L’admirable musée d’Orsay nous entraîne, jusqu’au 15/1/23, à la découverte d’une artiste libre qui s’est imposée, au 19e, dans un monde masculin : Rosa Bonheur. Cette artiste démontre que, selon ses propres mots, « le génie n’a pas de sexe ». C’est un génie du dessin et de la peinture. Par goût et conviction écologique avant l’heure, elle se spécialise dans la peinture animalière. Ses lapins, renards, chiens, chevaux, bovins, cerfs et même lions sont d’un réalisme époustouflant. Elle sait que le crayon est un impérieux préalable avant le pinceau. Ses dessins préparatoires sont étonnants. Elle donne relief et vie aux poils de ses animaux par un empâtement maîtrisé. L’oeil est le miroir de l’âme. Les yeux de ses modèles bénéficient d’une attention particulière tout en évitant l’écueil de l’anthropomorphisme. Avec ses deux tableaux célèbres (labourage nivernais et marché aux chevaux), l’artiste confère plus d’humanité aux animaux qu’elle représente qu’aux hommes qui les mènent. Rosa Bonheur est un génie du marketing et du commerce. En se positionnant avec talent sur le genre animalier, moins emprunté par les hommes qui préfèrent le genre historique ou le portrait, elle s’assure une reconnaissance rapide. L’émergence de produits dérivés (papier peint, services à thé,…)témoigne d’un grand sens commercial. Riche et célèbre de son vivant, elle s’affranchit de la tutelle masculine. Elle vit avec une autre femme, Nathalie Micas. Elle devient un symbole féministe et contribue à l’émancipation des lesbiennes. Des poupées à son effigie, portant pantalon sont commercialisées. Artist Rosa Bonheur, born Marie-Rosalie Bonheur (16 Mar 1822 – 25 May 1899),

was a French artist, mostly a painter of animals (animalière) but also a sculptor, in a realist style.

Her best-known paintings are Ploughing in the Nivernais, first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1848, and now at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and The Horse Fair (in French: Le marché aux chevaux), which was exhibited at the Salon of 1853 (finished in 1855) and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City.

Bonheur was widely considered to be the most famous female painter of the nineteenth century.

Personal life and legacy

Women were often only reluctantly educated as artists in Bonheur's day, and by becoming such a successful artist she helped to open doors to the #womenartists that followed her.

Bonheur can be viewed as a " #NewWoman " of the 19th century; she was known for wearing men's clothing, but she attributed her choice of trousers to their practicality for working with animals (see Rational dress).

In her romantic life, she was fairly openly a #lesbian; she lived with her first partner, #NathalieMicas, for over 40 years until Micas' death,

Visiting the home and studio of the artist Rosa Bonheur. This is a visit I have always wanted to make for a long time. Going with a fellow art Academy friend made it much more fun. We made the trip traveling by train going just one stop beyond Fontainebleau to the town of Thomery. A twenty minute hike through a small section of the forest of Fontainebleau had us breathing the smells of the cool fresh cool air on a path that led directly to this artist's amazing space. Formally named the Chateau de By, this odd structure sits about forty miles southwest of Paris. Bonheur dubbed the space "The Domain of Perfect Affection". Rosa came from a family of artists. I should not have been surprised at the large amount of works she created: drawing, painting, print works and a number of small sculptures well represented in the space. So much of her works seemed to have been collected outside of France. She would be the first woman in French history to receive the French Legion of Honour presented by the Empress Eugenie in 1865. Receiving the honor the Empress would state "Genius has no Sex” The place was an artist's studio that one could only dream of working in today.
