La Conner - Anacortes - Port Angeles La Conner Sunshine and a double header on the water today! The trip began by going down the Swinomish Slough, towards Deception Pass bridge. Along the way we saw a ton of harbor seals in the water and a bunch of great blue heron. After cruising under the bridge, we heard reports of some whales further south of us so we turned around and started heading in pursuit of the group. We made our way back towards the slough but ended up heading further west along the shorelines of Camano Island. The first whale we spotted was a surprise for us. A gray whale was feeding on the bottom of the seafloor off the northern tip of Camano Island. We watched this whale surface several times and then headed in pursuit of the group we had heard news of. Nearby was a group of orcas traveling north. They were identified as transient orcas, also known as the marine mammal eating variety. After watching a couple surfaces by this group, we headed further south in pursuit of two other groups that were feeding together. They had just finished their meal when we showed up and were celebrating the feast with breaches, spyhops and tail throws! We were really lucky and had a couple really close encounters with this group. When they stopped playing and began to go into travel mode, we took off back towards port with another stop at the original group of orcas we had seen. The water was flat calm and we turned off the engines as the orcas circled around us, which made for an amazing encounter. - Emma Anacortes AM We started the trip with a stop at Williamson Rocks, where we found harbor seals, double crested cormorants, gulls, and more. We cruised beneath the Deception Pass Bridge, and made our way south down Saratoga Passage. At Lowell Point, we met up with the T100s. This family of four were steadily making their way north up the passage, spread-out and cruising. T100E came and gave us a surprise look when it surfaced from a prolonged dive right off our port side. We cut the engine and watched as it proceeded to work its way to the bow, and then continued on to meet up with the rest of the pod. With that, we made our turn for home, stopping first at the Skagit River Delta to visit with the juvenile gray whale that has called this area home for the summer. It was busy foraging in the shallows, offering incredible looks at its flukes as it did so. We took the Swinomish Slough route home. The treetops of Goat Island housed bald eagles and great blue herons, and there were harbor seals hauled out on the log rafts below. A beautiful route home to end off a double-header trip! - Sam PM We went north this evening, cruising up and around the Cone Islands, and then onwards into Rosario Strait. At the cone islands, we visited with some hauled out harbor seals, and some of their peers over at the Peapods as well. From there it was onwards to Village Point on Lummi. It was here that we met up with the T2Cs, a family of five Bigg’s Killer Whales. We watched as they hunted harbor seals way up in the shallows of Village Point. It was truly an incredible sight, their strength and agility clear to see. We watched as one harbor seal got away, and another was not as lucky. We left this pod to continue their cruise north, and we circumnavigated Lummi Island. We made a final stop at Viti Rocks, where we found two bald eagles, harbor seals, double-crested cormorants, glaucous-winged gulls, and more! What an end to an incredible trip. - Sam Port Angeles AM A beautiful morning it was with glassy flat waters and a bit of a swell coming in from the ocean. We headed north then  we got reports if incoming orcas out west so we turned to the west. We traveled out to Otter Point to meet the incoming southern resident orcas and had some close looks at the J16's.  We saw many residents all spread out slowly eastbound. There was some spyhopping and tail slapping and even a few upside down tail lobs as the groups mingled amongst themselves. We continued east and eventually took a side trip to Race  Rocks where we had plenty of pinnipeds .There were harbor seals lying around and California sea lions barking and squabbling over sleeping spots. The Steller sea lions were a bit more ferocious growling and sparring in earnest. We even go to see Ollie the sea otter as he rolled around and  made sure to keep an eye on us.. With time growing short we headed out  but not before taking a look at a humpback whale that was sleeping  so there  was no fluking and no ID's on this sleepy whale. All in all, not a  bad start to the day with a double header and pinnipeds galore. - Lee PM A little bit of the evening fog and smoke looked like it was making its way in so we headed north and towards Victoria where we were able to spend some time with our southern resident orcas. We could see orcas spread out in little groups all over and we found a group that we could have to ourselves and spent a little time with them  before checking out  other small groups. Most of J pod was out there and they were all heading eastward at a very leisurely pace. The research boats were out checking on them so we made sure not to be in their way. We spent as much time as we could with the orcas before moving on to look for other whales. As we headed west we spotted a humpback whale to the south of us so we headed over to check him out and it wound up being twp separate humpbacks but they split up so we stuck it out with the closest one. As he dove down and fluked we found out it was our good friend MMZ0004 Zephyr. He didn't mind showing off for us surfacing near us and raising his gorgeous white flukes for all to see...After awhile we had to part ways as the sky was darkening , the seas were building and our time was running short. By the time we headed in the fog had come in along the shore until we entered Ediz Hook but it made for a relaxing trip home. -Lee

Spur of the Moment Whale Watching
We are finally getting some spring-like weather here in the PNW. With sunshine and warmer temperatures we’ve been wanting to get out and about a bit more. I had gotten an e-mail with a discount coupon for whale watching out of Anacortes. We had taken a tour with the company several years ago, and decided that we would take advantage of the coupon and head out with Island Adventures once again.
Our tour was scheduled to depart at 11:30. We decided to head into Anacortes early and grab a good breakfast at Calico Cupboard. This worked out quite well, and the large breakfast meant that we wouldn’t have to eat lunch on the boat. We found the Island Adventures location, checked in, then headed over to the marina.
The last time we went out with Island Adventures was seven years ago, back in 2011. Back then we cruised on the Island Explorer 3 and saw a lot of very active orcas. Now they have a new, larger boat, the Island Explorer 5, and we were hoping to see gray whales. We admired it as we wandered along the Cap Sante Marina.
At the end of the marina is a memorial to mariners from Anacortes lost at sea. Names from 1916 through present day are listed. One unique feature is a set of sailor’s knots hanging from the edges of the memorial.
Just out from that is a beautiful sculpture entitled the “Lady of the Sea.” The sculpture depicts a woman and her child awaiting the safe return of the sailors.
We headed back down to the dock and got in line to board. Captain Scott and the crew addressed us, we posed for a selfie in front of the boat, then sought our seats. We decided to try the second level at the front of the boat.
We got underway, heading out of the marina and past Cap Sante. Lots of folks were up on the overlook, taking advantage of the nice weather. From there we headed up Guemes Channel.
As we continued down the channel we picked up speed and very quickly the front of the boat became unbearable with the wind. We found more comfortable accommodations inside and toward the back of the boat. At least from back there we had views of Mount Baker.
Our route took us up through the Rosario Strait along the eastern edge of Orcas Island. We paused a couple of times to view birds and eagles, but no whales. We had spectacular views of the Canadian Coastal Range, including the split peaks of Golden Eagle.
On our 2011 trip we headed past this point and on up into Canadian waters out from Vancouver. Naturally, we were quite surprised when the boat turned around and headed back south without seeing any whales. We were wondering if we would be able to cash in on the “whale guarantee.” The guarantee says that if you don’t see whales you can come back on another tour for free. I like boat rides like this, whales or not, so part of me was hoping that we could do another trip. I bet many tourists from out of town couldn’t take advantage of the guarantee.
As it turned out, Captain Scott had been in touch with a tug captain that had spotted orcas further south, and that’s where we were headed.
Just off the west side of Guemes Island we spotted the whales. A Washington State Ferry passed on the other side of them.
We watched a pod of five orcas as they hunted between Guemes and Fidalgo. As we watched other tour boats from Victoria joined us. Looking at them I was glad we were on the boat we were on.
I moved up to the upper deck to get shots of the whales. Laura joined me for a bit, but up that high you could really feel the movement of the waves and she decided to go back down. I stayed to take more photos. The captain tried to align the boat for the perfect Washington State shot with Mount Baker, a ferry, and a whale all together.
With my long lens I couldn’t get all three in one frame. Laura had more success with her phone. I had to settle for Photoshopping a whale into my shot. That Photoshopped image is at the top of this post. I stayed on the top deck about five minutes too long and had to join Laura down below. Fortunately, we took action in time and neither of us got sick.
Actually, the view was better from down below. We were closer to the whales seeing them from straight on rather than from above. I took more shots from down there. I also took photos of the Burrows Bay Light House. I had kayaked out to the light house in 2010.
Since we were so close to Anacortes and our home base, our captain decided to let us see some other things. We rode over to a set of rocks where seals and sea lions were enjoying the sunshine and staying out of the way of the orcas.
But we weren’t done. Our next stop was one place I’ve been wanting to explore a long, long time. The tides were right, so our captain took us through Deception Pass and under the bridge.
On the other side of the pass we could see the strong currents whipping around the rocks. One hot shot on a fishing boat must have thought he was in a rodeo as he stood on the bow of his boat as it zipped through the currents.
We pulled around toward Canoe Pass and for a moment I thought we might be going back that way. However, it was just a detour so that we could see the opening to an old mine high up in the cliff.
We came back through the main pass and headed back to where we saw the whales. I switched from my 200-500mm lens to my 18-300mm lens. It would still give me decent telephoto range but would also allow wider shots.
The whales were hanging at out Williamson Rocks, just south of Allan Island and west of Fidalgo Island. I had also kayaked out to these rocks in 2010. The orcas were definitely hunting out here. Finally one of them breached, and the captain treated that as a finale for our outing.
The trip back didn’t take long. It was a great trip, but really wish that we had seen larger whales than orcas. I’m sure that we’ll do another one of these, or at the least another ferry trip in the coming months.
Here’s the route for our trip.
One final note. Captain Scott Jacobson did an excellent job finding the whales and trying to line up the perfect shots for us. Tyler Reed was our naturalist and he did a great job…as long as he was talking about whales and wildlife. It was clear that he was a biologist, and not a geologist. He described Mount Baker as an “active” volcano instead of dormant. Active means that it’s currently erupting. He also pronounced “Gneiss” as “niece” with a long “e” rather than a long “i”. Oh well. Tyler did write up a blog post on the Island Adventures website that does a better job of describing what we saw. It was a great tour, and I highly recommend this group. They can be pricey, but it’s worth it.

Meet the Trans Woman Running for Pete Sessions’ Seat in Congress
The election of Donald Trump has brought out a great many people interested in trying to take the country back from the Republicans starting in the 2018 mid-term elections. They’ll need all the help they can get as here in Texas the Democrats have a rather deplorable history of turning up at the polls when there’s no president on the ballot. One of the hopefuls is Danielle J Pellett, who will be challenging Pete Sessions of Texas’ 32nd District. We sat down with her on opposite sides of the Internet to get to know the woman who would unseat Sessions, who is well-known as a tough opponent.
Free Press Houston: What made you decide to run for Congress?
Danielle J Pellett: For far too long, I have been standing in a voting booth and my options were simply a Republican or Libertarian. I wondered where the Democrats were running for office. I kept thinking “someone should do something about that.” This past year, I finally decided that I needed to be the person who stood up to do something about it.
FPH: More specifically, are you opposing Pete Sessions because of anything he specifically stands for or just because of the direction the Republican Party has taken?
Pellett: As a former conservative, I disagree with the direction that their party has taken. Most notably, some of Sessions’ votes betray core conservative Republican values: shutting down the government repeatedly, refusing to get clean water to Flint, and opposing a raise to minimum wage to get families off of food stamps. We should be fiscally responsible and stop subsidizing Big Oil and make Wall Street answer to why we had to bail them out in 2008.
FPH: You’ve talked about growing up with Republican/Libertarian ideals, and rather than throwing those by the wayside you feel that some aspects of that simply feel more at home in the Democratic Party than in the GOP. What of your original stances do you find mesh the best with the DNC?
Pellett: I believe in a small government, which means not getting involved in family matters like they did with Terri Schaivo, or overturning the fracking ban they did in Denton. When I was young, I was on the Federal free lunch system and at one point we were on food stamps in order to make ends meet. My parents were not lazy, and their hard-working ethic put the lie to the welfare queen narrative. Despite what Paul Ryan says, those meals didn’t leave me with an empty soul. It fed a child and made them able to study and succeed in life.
What feels like a lifetime ago, I wound up not going to OCS [Officer Candidate School] and getting a commission with the Air Force due to the Air Force core value of Integrity first because of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. As I studied the oath of office and realized that to protect the Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic, they were some horrific domestic policies that need to change.
We were firing gay military translators as we invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, while not putting those wars in the budget and kept asking for “emergency funding” as if it were a surprise that we were still there. We’re supposed to support our troops, but where was the support there?
Finally, I believe in provable facts over political dogma. Pollution is bad, and climate change is real. Drug testing is more expensive to the government than welfare is, and poor people can’t afford drugs. It’s even cheaper to rehabilitate addicts rather than locking them up in jail.
FPH: You credit Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) with a political awakening in 2001. What about Sen. Sanders’ and your own ideology would be most beneficial to Texans?
Pellett: Bernie Sanders has always been an independent who refuses to be bought out. He likes to tell it as it is, and refuses to let others get away with selling lies such as “Clean Coal” or that massive corporations just like to donate thousands of dollars to candidates and expect nothing in return.
His speech at Liberty University reminds us of our Texas values of working hard and paying our fair share. So when I see the ultra-rich getting away with squirreling away their money in illegal overseas tax shelters, I know that they are not paying their fair share. Instead, they are paying politicians to distract us with these supposed culture wars over abortion, gay marriage, and which bathroom we can pee in.
We used to have our roads and bridges paid for by tax dollars, now you see toll roads being built all over the place. We even have toll roads that are paid off that are still getting government subsidies while the companies that maintain them are collecting toll money.
FPH: Why do you think so many Representatives end up running unopposed?
Pellett: Just like doing taxes, a lot of things are designed look harder in order to make people feel like they are unable to comprehend or do it. We also have rampant gerrymandering that makes districts nearly impossible to win.
My district right now vaguely looks like a donkey. This was done with regard to the historically low voter turnout in Garland. Due to the tenacity of Victoria Neave and her get-out-the-vote efforts, she won in a district that everyone had assumed was impossible.
FPH: Texas, particularly Dallas and Houston, is a place where large corporations hold significant sway, and provide a living for many, many people and their families. Is your message in opposition to them, or is there a place where people and corporations come together for the greater good?
Pellett: The economy has been faltering for the past decade. For anyone who has ever played Monopoly, you realize that income inequality will ruin people. Once we have a winner in Monopoly, the game comes to an end. But how does that work in real life?
If a few corporations have all the money and all the resources while the majority of the middle and worker class doesn’t have enough money to make ends meet… then these corporations are now unable to sell their wares to the public. In short, who will be left to buy stuff when everyone is barely scrounging by to have shelter and food?
So what I would say to business interests is this: you have to look at a five-year profit plan rather than just the next quarter. In the short run, shutting down your factories and sending jobs overseas for lower pay seems to do great, but this has happened on a macro scale and has ruined Michigan.
For the greater good, businesses must want to increase their pay to match inflation. Businesses must realize that government should work as a check and balance in order to protect the people. We must remember the lessons from the Deepwater Horizon, West Texas, and the Magnablend plant in Waxahachie that prove we must have and enforce regulations for the safety of the people.
There has to be a balance between helping businesses thrive and making certain that we don’t have poisonous chemicals in our water like they had in Corpus Christi.
FPH: If you had to pick one issue that was most dire in need of addressing in Texas, what would it be and how would you address it?
Pellett: Education is the linchpin for all of this. We need to teach science without religious bias, we need to teach history without politically-motivated revisionism, and we need to fully explain where babies come from and how to avoid that in order to reduce our teen pregnancy rate.
FPH: Do you anticipate support from the DNC in your candidacy?
Pellett: I expect that the DNC will support me once I win the primary. I have already reached out to multiple candidate sponsorship programs and political action committees that are dedicated to promoting science and Progressive values that will not cost me my morals and ethics.
There is a way to work from within the system where you can get $27 donations from regular people and you do not have to rely on the backing of the fracking industry in order to compete in a political race.
FPH: What do you think will be the biggest challenge in your race?
Pellett: I’m up against one of the most powerful people in the Texas Republican Party, who is well known and is instrumental in getting lots of money from wealthy out-of-state donors and from political action committees. In the past two years, Pete Sessions has raised over $2 million. Only 1 percent of that came from small dollar donations, so we know exactly who he answers to.
All I can hope to do is call him out on this while proving that I am the better candidate that understands the values of Texans today and for our next generation.
FPH: You’re one of a number of trans women nationwide I know are running for office in 2018, including some prominent ones like Brianna Wu. What empowers you the most against the almost-inevitable transphobic backlash?
Pellett: I’m not running because I’m transgender, I’m running because I believe in helping middle and working-class Texans. I just happened to be transgender, and I honestly expect more push back from the fact that I’m an ex-conservative and I know how they think, how they speak, and I know how to destroy their talking points.
FPH: Being the biased, lamestream media, I probably fucked some of this up, so here’s a small bit where you can say anything you want.
Pellett: My mother, Maria del Rosario, was born with cerebral palsy. It was misdiagnosed as polio when she grew up, and she had the Forrest Gump leg braces and walked with a noticeable limp. She was told all her life that she was an invalid and a cripple, and she couldn’t do the same things that her sisters could.
Naturally, she went ahead and did the thing anyways. She defied my grandfather by walking to Mass every morning before going to Catholic School. She defied my grandfather by going to college and getting a degree in teaching English as a second language to special-needs students.
She defied her family by falling in love with and marrying a gringo, my father David Ellsworth. Her doctor said it would be impossible for her to have a child. I am the product of one stubborn Latina and the man who supported her.
When I started supporting Bernie Sanders at the Texas Democratic Party and wanted to engage in direct democracy through a petition process at the State Convention, everyone told me it was impossible. I defied the naysayers and did three of them.
Meet the Trans Woman Running for Pete Sessions’ Seat in Congress this is a repost

La Conner- Anacortes- Port Angeles La Conner The day began with a beautifully smoky sunrise over the Cascades and a warm breeze dancing through the air. A thick layer of smoke has settled into the area with all the wildfires burning along the coast but we were undeterred. We headed down the channel getting some great looks at a few black tail deer on a beach near Hole in the Wall. We continued onward and saw dozens of great blue herons and even had a few bald eagles around the channel. Toward the end of the channel we got to see more great blue herons and even had some views of an Osprey as it was heading out to g o fishing. We headed north from there getting unique views of Deception pass bridge in the smoke before we headed out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We crossed the strait to the south end of Lopez island where we slowed down for a nice pass by Castle rock. We found two more bald eagles here and even had a small group of marbled murrelets. As we continued west from there we began seeing many sea birds including common murres, rhinoceros auklets, and even a few groups of harbor porpoise. We joined up with the T2C’s between Trial island and Discovery island near Victoria, Canada. They gave us some great views as they were traveling back into the area after a short trip out to the coast. As usual T2C2 was trailing a little bit behind but definitely making his way just fine. After a great time with these Biggs killer whales we headed back to the east. We stopped at Smith island where we found seven or eight tufted puffins our feasting on the bait balls that lined Smith Bank. We checked out Minor island where we found a bunch more harbor seals hauled out on the beach and hundreds of cormorants. We then made our way up to Deception pass and we’re heading back when we found a Steller sea lion feeding right off the old Whidbey Island ferry landing. After that we made our way up the channel and back to La Conner having completed a great trip into the Salish sea!!! - Tyson Anacortes AM
Our trip started out leaving Cap Sante Marina and cruising over towards Bird Rocks in Rosario Strait. There were a ton of harbor seals and cormorants hanging out on the rocks. We then cruised over to the south end of Lopez Island where we saw more harbor seals. After that, we made our way west through the Strait of Juan de Fuca towards Victoria, BC where we saw our first group of whales of the day. A transient pod (marine mammal eating) was traveling along the coast. There were four orcas traveling together, including one larger male, that were identified as the T2Cs. After watching the larger group for a while, we made our way over to a lone male traveling behind. His name is Tumbo and he has scoliosis, which hinders his ability to swim fast and hunt. Thankfully his family members take care of him and travel ahead and hunt for him. After watching Tumbo, we said our farewells to the whales and headed towards the south end of San Juan Island. We made our way over to Whale Rocks where we saw our third marine mammal species of the day; the Steller sea lion. After checking them out, we still weren’t done spotting new wildlife. We journeyed over to a nearby island to see an eagle’s nest and found both parents and their two young perched in the trees.
- Emma PM Tonight’s trip started out cruising towards Bird Rocks, in Rosario Strait, after leaving Cap Sante Marina. There were a ton of harbor seals hauled out on the rocks as well as cormorants perched nearby. After that, we cruised down Whidbey Island towards the Puget Sound where we spotted our first whales of the trip. A pod of transient (marine mammal eating) orcas were traveling along the coast of Whidbey. After watching the group surface several times, they surprised us by popping up right off the bow of the boat! They then started chasing a harbor porpoise we had seen pass by the boat earlier. The larger male was porpoising out of the water chasing after the porpoise until the pod, unfortunately for the porpoise, ultimately won the chase. One of the orcas celebrated with a spyhop after the kill and they continued to celebrate. They surfaced right next to the boat again before we had to say farewell to the whales to head back to port. Truly an incredible show tonight. - Emma Port Angeles AM Visibility was extremely low  due to wildfires but it didn't matter. We found a few harbor seals at Ediz Hook  on our way out  and then we ran into a huge concentration of birds most already sated from a huge meal  but a large group was still working a crazy bait ball tightly condensed at the surface. As we watched we found two harbor seals surfacing in the middle just gorging themselves. It was a pretty awesome baitball. We then headed north  to catch up with some orcas off of Trial island. We had the T2C's a family of four Bigg's orcas. The middle son Tumbo had fallen behind a bit due to having scoliosis but no worries as his family always takes good care of him. We could make out Victoria through the haze and had some good looks at Trial Island Lighthouse before moving on. At Constance Bank we found a humpback whale we know as MMZ0004 Zephyr. We got some great looks as he fluked a few times for us. By this time we  were getting near the end of the trip and had to start making our way back across the straits everyone happy with a double header this morning. - Lee PM  The Haze from the smoke still lingered about as we headed east to see if we could catch up to a couple of families of orcas that had been reported. As we traveled along tons of harbor porpoise were everywhere along with Common Murres getting ready to take their offspring back out to sea. Before we could reach our destination we  were just off Dungeness Spit when we found our own little family of Bigg's orcas The T19's. We had mom and her 2 son's and they seemed to be heading west  so we turned around and hung  out with them since we had them all to ourselves for over an hour. Just as we were getting ready to leave they decided to all take off porpoising like they were chasing something. We never did see them make a kill but they were pretty exciting as they surfaced sometimes quite near the boat  at high speeds obviously on a mission. We eventually had to drag ourselves away from them as they were heading back to Port Angeles and we had rumors of humpbacks north of  us.  Once again before we reached our destination we were waylaid by an adorable Minke whale who was very cooperative traveling west and surfacing at regular intervals. We spent a bit of time with him before heading on to see if we could locate  the humpback whales. Once again whale karma was with us as we found not one but two humpbacks together. They decided to part ways after we got there but we had  good visuals to let us know  one was BCZ0298 Split Fin and the 2nd whale was MMY0009 Frankenstein. We  watched Split Fin for a bit before trying to check out Frankenstein. He gave us some great looks as he angled in towards the boat before fluking and diving under the boat. The sun was setting and it was time to head home across the pond but not without running back into our friends the T19's for one last look before saying goodbye. What an amazing evening trip with a triple header and some very cooperative whales. - Lee

Anacortes
Yesterday we traveled far and wide, but it paid off handsomely with two great whale encounters!
After first venturing as far north as Sucia Island, we found no whales, but plenty of harbor seals as well as large Steller sea lions on Clements Reef.  We traveled back down Rosario Strait toward the Strait of Juan de Fuca where we found our first whale near Smith Island, a very young humpback (probably no older than two or three years old) that was (very) actively feeding on bait fish among large groups of birds.  This little whale has been seen several times over the last few weeks - glad to see he or she is thriving in the Salish Sea!  We then got a report from the Coupeville/Pt. Townsend ferry of transient orcas hanging out in their ferry lane, and while we knew it meant we'd be a bit late getting back to the dock, we also knew it would be worth it - how right we were!  This group was the T28's, a group so rarely seen that they weren't even in the ID catalog!  The group was very active with breaches, headstands, and tail-slapping, and it looks like they have a very young calf in the group now as well!  This important sighting has been shared with the researchers that maintain the catalog, as it has been several years since they were last spotted.  On the way home we stopped by for one last look at our humpback before heading home.  We covered nearly 100 miles, but it was totally worth it!
La Conner Rain!!! It was awesome! Flat calm and beautiful all day.Headed south down the Swinomish Slough. A couple of mature bald eagles were perched on Goat Island. Several great blue herons were also perched up in the trees, along the shoreline and on the log tows. A few black oystercatchers perched on the rock wall of the slough. Harbor seals hauled out on Seal Rocks. Several harbor porpoise throughout out day. The rain stopped and we headed under the bridge. Out to the strait of Juan de Fuca. Flat calm, great spotting conditions. Headed into Whale Rocks and found numerous Steller sea lions hauled out. Headed through Cattle Pass to lunch at Fisherman’s Bay. Lunch then headed south down San Juan Channel in the fog. Broke out of the thick fog south of Salmon Bank. Continued out to the Strait on the search. Ideal conditions. Spotted some birds along the current lines. Captain Tyler found us a lone tufted puffin west of Smith Island. We made our way to the east side of Smith island where our sister ship, the IE5 found a humpback whale! We had some great looks and he even breached for us once! It was amazing to see the whole whale out of the water. We spent a lot of time with our whale before we had to head back toward homeport.
Port Angeles
We started the trip with a bit of a drizzle and gray, foggy conditions. However, the whales sure don't mind the rain!! After a quick stop to check out the harbor seals on the rocky beach at the tip of Ediz Hook, we headed north across the strait. Only a couple miles off the shore line near Victoria, we caught up with a humpback who we ID'd as MMZ0004! This whale seemed to be doing some long feeding dives so we headed west to race rocks. On the way over we spotted another humpback show it's tail in the distance. When we arrived at race rocks, we were treated to some active seals and sea lions, along with the sea otter we lovingly call Ollie.  We then did a bit more exploring to the west but eventually made our turn south and headed back to Port Angeles!
