rose
Barbara Allen was buried in the old church yard,
Sweet William was buried beside her.
Out of Sweet William's heart grew a red, red rose,
Out of Barbry Allen's, a briar.
They grew and grew in the olde church yard,
Til they could grown no higher.
At the end they formed a true lover's knot,
and the Rose grew 'round the Briar.
It seems almost silly to talk about roses and superstition or symbolism given how steeped the general public already is in it. I like to blame that on Valentine's Day, one of the rare things I can't decide if that makes it a bonus or not. Roses have become the go-to flower for all occasions, but never more so than when it comes to romance. There's even a long running dating show where the focus of the season picks their potential love interests by handing them a single rose a piece. I say 'roses' and, at least in most of the western world, anyone would respond 'love'.
Except gardeners who seem more inclined to use the word 'cantankerous'.
Roses aren't just for love though. Like most things, if you dig deep enough backward into their past, you'll find roots that spread deep and dark as well.
So let's talk about the myth and superstition around roses.
If you've been reading this blog, you won't be surprised to find that roses were associated with death just as much as they were with love (not because this blog is about death but because just about everything seems to be associated with death if you go digging). What might surprise you is that roses and death go as far back as the Iliad at least. After Hector was killed, Achilles attempted to desecrate his body, and thereby damn him in the afterlife, by dragging the corpse behind his chariot and then leaving it out to rot. Aphrodite, for all her faults, anointed Hector's body with rose oil to ensure that there would be no decay until he was given a proper funeral. Rose oil, and petals, were common in funerals but it was probably the Romans who took it to excess. Roses for them were protective, keeping the dead safe from evil spirits as well as being offerings to the dead themselves, a potent mourning symbol. The celebration Rosaria (or Rosalia) was known as the Festival of Roses and was a time when the graves, and ghosts, of their ancestors were honored. And here's where it gets interesting. Because the Roman military often made sacrifices before marching off and roses, and violets, could be a part of that. The significance of those two flowers together were based on several things, not the least of which were their colors. The colors of blood and rot. Perhaps, one could speculate, the red of a rose has always stood for the preciousness of heart's blood - and the purpose of sacrificing that varies depending on who you're giving it to, and what outcome you're hoping for.
Roses weren't just good for funerals though. The Romans also had a saying 'sub rosa' which means 'beneath the rose'. The idea behind it was that, with all its thorns and tangled branches, beneath a rose bush was a very good place to hide a secret. Its interesting to find that, that too, has passed along with the rose as a symbol. Cupid gave a rose to Harpocrates, the (kinda) god of silence, in exchange for keeping his mother's affairs a secret. Sleeping Beauty is locked in a tower or castle that's guarded by a thorny briar rose forest. Many Catholic confessional booths used to have rose carvings on them and there are still some rooms in older buildings with a rose painted on the ceiling. The Jacobite rebellion in Scotland took a white rose as its symbol. 'Sub rosa' is still used to this day when implying something is confidential.
Let's go a bit lighter now.
Did you know in France, one story has briar roses created by a failed attempt of the Devil to make a ladder to get him back into heaven?
Did you know that the word rosary comes from the word rosarium, which means crown or garland of roses?
The book The Romance of the Rose, written in the 1200s, has some very saucy puns when it comes to roses and women.
If a young girl wraps a rose in a piece of clean white paper on Midsummer's Eve, and its still intact by Christmas day, she can wear it in her buttonhole and the first man to compliment her on it will be her future husband.
Rose leaves touching the floor (leaves, not petals, your weddings are safe) brings bad luck but throwing the leaves into a fire brings good luck.
Cleopatra was rumored to have filled the floor of her bedroom two feet deep with rose petals to impress Mark Anthony.
And lastly, don't sneeze too hard while holding a single rose. If all the petals fall off it and you're left holding only the stem, its a sign of bad things to come (and probably of hay fever).
Tumblr media
“I once had a rose named after me and I was very flattered. But I was not pleased to read the description in the catalogue: no good in a bed, but fine up against a wall.” Eleanor Roosevelt
Does anyone know any Asian or Middle Eastern lore about roses? I was disappointed my sources didn't seem to have any. I'd love to hear them if you do!

23 and 41? ^-^
23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?
Fairy tale AU! I had the very early inklings of an L&Co fairytale AU plot months ago and I refuse to look at it again because my WIPs are going to unionize at this rate, but I think it would be fun if I can find a way to keep it short and manageable.
41. Link a fic that made you think, “Wow, I want to write like that.”
You all already know I'm going insane about @womaninwinter's rosary fic, Sanctum Rosarium, at all times, and it's definitely a huge influence behind Take His Hand, too. In addition to how gorgeous this work is (and what an insightful character study! And it murders me six ways from Sunday in every way!), it really inspired me to think missionally about my writing. I am actually not someone who frequently headcanons my favorite characters as Christian (except Dorothea Frazil, which you can pry from my cold dead hands, but that's implied in canon anyway). But the salt and light thing is very much a part of how I think about my creative pursuits, and the possibility of more directly applying that to fanfiction has been really eye-opening for me. Influential in the extreme, and I have been blessed for it!

My VVVIP experience with The Rose (very long):
I did the triple VIP package in Stockholm, Sweden with the boys <3
For the green room tour, they all started with a hug, which was very nice... they're all very short hahaha, but so handsome.
When I first got into the room, Dojoon commented that my top looked like some of the jackets they wear on stage, so I was happy that he noticed that lol (done on purpose!!)
The first thing they asked all of us is if we wanted anything to drink, I asked for a diet coke knowing that Hajoon is a diet coke drinker too, which turned into a conversation with them about how diet coke isn't really sold in that area of Europe cause of the chemicals in it, and how we should probably all.... stop. (I drink like 3-4 a day I have a problem)
They asked why I came all the way from NYC, I mentioned that I had a buttload of unused PTO (which they didn't know what that was, which, honestly... artist problems same reason I didn't use mine, I told them that I finally got a staff graphic artist job (forgot to mention the brand and i wanna kermit cause sammy and their photographer both own a lot of stuff from the brand i work for, and like a ton of other idols lol.... like Eric's whole family is a fan of one of the things I do some art on lol (I should seriously send him one of the toddler outfits I did a bunch on for his nephew lol)), vs the freelance I had been doing for 3 yrs before), asked if I had come to multiple cities or had gone on vacation only, and I told them I was on vacation in Sweden/Denmark.
They don't usually get to tourist when on tour, so mainly just plane/train, hotel, concert venue, maybe one part of the city, which is kinda sad ;_; also it must be so tiring, like Dojoon looked super tired and not the healthiest, so I hope he's okay, he kinda kept his distance from us during parts of the tour and also "brain farted" during Q&A......
But they asked how I got there, mentioned plane ofc, but I made a joke that u could probably take a cruise...?? Hajoon said UBER which made the others all laugh
I kinda froze a bit, it was a loooottt, so Dojoon made a joke that I could just stare at them even and it'd be okay...
I asked them if they were going to ever release the old songs (like photographer, omg, greed, can't let you go) that they used to play on their tours in 2017-19, when I mentioned omg/photographer I told Jae I like his little slap bass solos in them <3 <3 <3 (Jae def still has the most idol'y mannerisms cause he did the classic idol compliment, head turn, heart eyes and hands to chest lol)...
They're planning on releasing them in a special way for broses, and Sammy was thinking some sort of like, scavenger hunt type thing on rosarium. (pls give them to meeeeee <3)
I told them I like those (omg and photographer) the most cause I play a bit of bass guitar, even though it's not my main instrument... and that the VIP package made me want to get out my guitars again,, Sammy asked what it was and if it was guitar, which I was like CLARINET!!!! and Bass Clarinet which is like a super big clarinet that goes up to /here/ *stands and gestures height*.
Sammy and Hajoon both came to the conclusion that it's a "clarinet cello" and "like a cello to a violin" which YES!!!
So when they got the ukulele out to sign, going with the violin joke, Jaehyeong mimed it being like a violin hahaha, and as they went to sign it Sammy kvetched about how sharpies smell lol.
So I was still talking to them about the old tracks, and mentioned I was a predebut fan.... and /used to/ (at least my noggin worked there) run a tumblr page of them, and sammy mentioned he used to be on tumblr and would follow/look into fan accounts, so HELP ME, (now i'm certain they've seen that awful video ;~;) but there's no way that he hasn't seen my acct then and that's big bad energy for my brain now lol.
but for the 4 selfies they first asked who your bias was, and when I said jaehyeong soooo quickly they all made fun of me for how fast it was, but OFC!! bass baby.
Jae and I took the two selfies, plus he almost dropped my phone in the middle, so I have a third really derpy one that wasn't supposed to be taken, and then we had the two with ot4...
Pics:

I wanna know what witchcraft they use to look taller in pics though...
And also... my precious (I have to build my display for it now)
Tumblr media
___
So after that we went for the stage tour....
I had initially hung by Jae while going on stage (and he helped me up cause their circle part of the stage was a big step up and i was wearing heels and am a klutz)
But I ended up hanging with Sammy and playing Skylar which <3 <3 <3
So two of the girls who were in my group played piano and were hanging with dojoon, and were both super good at piano btw!! <3
When I first put Skylar on I played a little bit of blackbird by the beatles and Dojoon sang alongggg, and then I played the beginning/chorus of back to me like the melody part (IDK I may slip in the audio that I recorded on my watch later, but not sure, I think I may wanna keep those private for me)
But Sammy asked if I wanted to keep playing (so I didn't get a chance on Juicy w/ Jae but that's okay, next year hopefully) and he showed me the chords to b2m and a little bit of the chords for alive.
It's really hard to play on stage, I'm not a guitar family main, and mostly play by tab/ear, so the delay you get from when you pluck/strum the instrument to when you hear it without the IEMs is really confusing.... so now I totally get why when they had that issue with their sound team with their IEMs they kept having such extreme issues cause it's like off by a half second from you playing and hearing it. (I can really only handle that delay on my reeds lol)
Also, rather than having a pedal board where they can change effects during tracks, they actually have them preprogrammed for each song, so they can change distortion type effects based on which song is in the setlist vs what effects they want at the moment. Which is different than when I went on their stage in 2018, cause they had a typical pedal board setup then.
Also when I took off Skylar, I asked Sammy what's with the heavy relic customs (cause he has two now) and he said that he just likes them..... and I sorta joked that in nerd instrument world that's not ok (even though I know someone who played at carnegie with duct tape on her fucking contrabass clarinet) and he said "well guitar can be a nerd instrument too" and like dude u do not know how weird woodwind players are... u do not get it but ily so much
___
Q&A/Soundcheck/Concert was... normal, waiting for fancams to upload now
___
We had one final group photo with the 5 VVVIPs where they also gave us the signed ukuleles and the posters they were holding backstage for us.
We got to hug them all again and we thanked them for the show.
We technically weren't allowed to give them gifts, but that was the only time we weren't watched as much, so one girl slipped them some black rose pins she ordered thru Dojoon, and I gave the keychains that I drew and had printed/manufactured through Sammy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sammy was impressed that I had all them and that the sticker on the back of Brittany is on the back, but when I mentioned I drew them he was like "wait you DREW these" so i'm super happy lol
...and then now i have world's worst post concert depression hahaha

Whats your music taste like? Is it great? Is it cringe?
I would say its more on cool side, you know! Not even that niche, actually. But not mainstream either, tee bee ache.
First of all I am going to promote Study God, our resident Aretes group of five-and-half - meaning theres technically six of them, but only five are ever present at a time, always different. Every one of them is skilled at apparently all instruments ever, and generally so talented in sound arts that if you gave them a thing that makes sounds in a consistent way they`d make a decent tune or even banger out of it. And they all can synergise and play off each other in the best ways. Not very creative though, till recent times getting by by etudes and licensed remixes and covers, which I personally blame on Senseing, although not confirmed. But I think a year ago they released their Graffiti Paints album, which means brain-freeze has passed? Especially loved Such Is The Mask and Fathers Back.
Then there is Veronica Miles, and oh stars. If you said "oh, she just sold soul to do THAT" I would not believe you, but if you said "oh she sold plural souls to do that" I would. Mainly a violinist, of degree which is worth at least two - Übermachine has a part where she imitates discharges of Tesla machine, and the general degree of feeling she evokes by playing… yeah. Then she also has moderately passing familiarity with several other instruments she uses, although people more knowledgeable than me say her violin school still shines through - what does that mean? AND beyond that she does all the recording and background stuff by herself, solo. Not an Arete, as much as "we" woud wish so. Doesnt speak, but general claim is that she can, and there is no problem or trauma about it, she just makes a point? Anyways, she is ALSO(am I repeating?) decently productive in many music styles, however you divide them apart. Already mentioned Übermachine, but also Autodafe, Hearts Matters, Lullaby №35, Humanity, Mountain Dawn, A-Than, Pin-up Girl and Psychopomp - they are sufficiently different from each other that its hard to squeeze two into the same box.
Then there are isolated bangers, like "Seed of Evil" by Otto Man, or "The Shipwreck" by Rosarium, or "1887" by Galahad. Dont listen to the rest of their music, listen to these.

Behold! The Paladin of Tau! The holy knight of the bleak star! Altar!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s my rendition of @theterribletenno’s warframe concept altar, the sentient Paladin warframe (idk how to link posts but you can find it on their pinned post). Initially I was just gonna do the frame itself but decided to go full out and do all the stuff that would come with them. I would’ve done a sentient ferrofluid ephemera and a rendition of their 4th ability but I can’t draw liquid. I modeled them more after the narmer stuff than traditional sentient aesthetics, and I imagine them having a floating walking animation. Ideally they would just glide around without moving any parts of their body like sentient enemies and narmer deacons do. The red parts would also be metallic like all the other sentient stuff, I just don’t have the right art supplies to do that. Some bonus descriptions for the cosmetics:
Cardnalyst helm: a penetrating cycloptic helm for the holy warrior of the narmer priesthood.
Rosarium syandana: a pod of sentient scout drones revered by the narmer cultists as a holy relic, now rendered inert after the defeat of their leader

Welcome to the Sanguine Rosarium, a place for me (the sanguine mirror continuum) to talk about my semi-plural, semi-system experiences? I'm a traumagenic median system with Borderline Personality Disorder.
I generally use me/I since most of my shards are aspects of my shattered self that gained some level of...self of their own? All of them are me but also not me.
While a lot of median systems seem to call their parts "facets" I've decided to call them "shards" since, in a way, my identity functions much like a reflection in a broken mirror -- every individual shard shows as different reflection of the same person from a different angle and sometimes distorted or changed. I might also call them reflections, sometimes.
I am 100% pro-endogenic systems and very anti-sysmed.

Roses in Alchemy and Book 3 of the Book of Dust
Philip Pullman has dropped a few hints about the final book of TBOD, but this  one is especially interesting.  Responding to @Templo_revista, he said: "The third book will have a title related to roses. I don't know if it's going to be 'The Garden of Roses' or 'Roses from the South' but it will have something to do with roses.”
This is not a huge surprise.  As he said in his EW interview:
Roses have been with me for some time.... I did all the chapter heading illustrations for The Amber Spyglass, the last illustration is for the scene where Lyra and Will part. It features two roses tied together with a ribbon, but the blossoms are looking in different directions. So roses were always a presence in my mind, somehow, for this story. The fact that the action of Book of Dust is centered on this mysterious place where the roses grow, it was kind of there from a long time ago.
Still, Pullman’s comment is very revealing, given that he is writing an alchemy story--which became clearer than ever in TSC.
Roses are very common symbols in alchemy.  The white rose represents the White Stage (albedo); the red rose (Rosa Rubea) represents the Red Stage (rubedo).  In any alchemy story, we can expect the protagonist to achieve the Red Stone, i.e., the Philosopher’s Stone, in some way or other.
Tumblr media
Pullman says his title might be “Garden of Roses,” which is actually the exact title of a 16th century alchemy treatise! The title Rosarium Philosophorum (1550) is usually translated as Rosary of the Philosophers.  The word “rosary” here does not mean prayer beads; it means rose garden.  If Pullman ends up using Garden of Roses as his title, I’d have to believe it was a direct steal from the title of the 1550 book.
I’ve cut and pasted from etymoline the explanation of how the word rosary changed its meaning from rose garden to prayer beads, for people (like me) who are interested in these things.
rosary (n.)
"rose garden," mid-15c., from Latin rosarium "rose garden," in Medieval Latin also "garland; string of beads; series of prayers," from noun use of neuter of rosarius "of roses," from rosa "rose" (see rose (n.1)).
The sense of "series of prayers" is 1540s, from French rosaire, a figurative use of the word meaning "rose garden," on the notion of a "garden" of prayers. This probably embodies the medieval conceit of comparing collections to bouquets (compare anthology and Medieval Latin hortulus animae "prayerbook," literally "little garden of the soul"). Sense transferred 1590s to the strings of beads used as a memory aid in reciting the rosary.
The Rosarium itself used “rosarium” as a metaphor for a gathering of alchemists, who generally referred to themselves as “philosophers.”   So the Rosarium Philosophorum was a collection of works by assorted writers of alchemy.  We even see them discussing their methods on the title page.  (See, e.g. “solve et coagula” on the bottom left.)  Aren’t they cute?
Tumblr media
We don’t know all the details of the botanical research station in Central Asia that is studying rose oil in TBOD.  But I wouldn’t be surprised if the inspiration for this group of researchers are the “philosophers” in the Rosarium Philosophorum.  Curiously, Dr. Strauss’s name is German for bouquet of flowers, so he seems a good fit for a garden of roses.  I suspect he is still there--and alive!
The station is not just a red building, but made of red stone.  It seems a safe prediction that Lyra will make it there, and “achieve the red stone” that way.
The Rosarium Philosophorum includes 20 woodcuts, shown below.  There are no roses--just lots of drawings of the Red King and White Queen, the mercurial water, the hermaphrodite, etc.
Tumblr media
I’ve posted a number of these individually before.  Subsequent to its publication a number of monks and other illustrators prepared colored versions of these black-and-white images, and those are usually the ones I’ve included.  Prettier!  And colour is so important in alchemy.

Teen Idol (from Rosarium Part I)
I’ve seen movies, suggestive stares
All my flames are made of paper
I sit my dolls on classroom chairs
And cherry-pick frames to treasure
Until, found right in front of me
Selling romance without heartbreak
Robbed of originality
Presents itself a trained target
He only needs to smile to cleanse
Any mean faces off my fields
The ones he puts me up against
Feed off my own missing appeals
They’re rough; if he can be gentle
I kneel to lower his defense
By a recurrent miracle
Somehow, I always stand a chance
I’m feeling lucky: he’s smitten
Needing rescue from his distress
He vaguely begs to be bitten
I drop my front, firmly obsessed
Rumor has it, he’s been lonely
Mourning a former possession
Disarmed, slender… a bit weary
I can always spot the symptoms
Just to blend into his background
I go everywhere he might be
And bit by bit, breaking him down
I taste, of need, the agony
I soothe my burns in a drizzle
I patch him up when he’s battered
My head fills up with his sizzle
I swear it’s the best thing I’ve heard
For a little while, I forget
The distant laughter, the rattling
Rapt mid-summer, drenched in cold sweat
I forever belong to him
Until the curls break to loosen
The honey eyes drip down my arms
I taste white tears, and confusion
Finally, misplace my doll’s charms
With my eyes wet and my lips pursed
I swear I’ll give my life for his
I guard his cage until it bursts
I’ll cover the scars on my ribs
I run right back into the trap
Of an articulate monster
As it lays flat across my lap
I read into the next chapter
My latest find’s too hard to faze
I move on to a new design
As I look straight into the blaze
He appears ready to be mine
In every new story I’m told
I rise to claim the starring role
Coated in wax, reflecting gold
The last thing he’ll need is a soul
I’m the one who loves in silent
Convinced to handle wood with care
When the harvests are compliant
I take my heart back for a glare
I’m used to the game, its treasons
Melted pupils and worn out gear
I cast light on my distractions
Only to watch them disappear
I’ve learned too well, after the break
We only survive on paper
I replay last summer’s mistake
And my lover is a player
I buy a few accessories
I prepare a look for the fall
I pack my made-up memories
With my own life-sized, teenage doll
Nobody sits to collect dust
Upon my bent, deserted shelf
There’s not a soldier I can trust
I learn to entertain myself
I don’t look for another fit
I’m the one I dress, and undress
I ponder over my own bits
Put ornaments up in my nest
Hanging around the same playground
Easy to miss, hard to regret
I walk around with my head down
And keep my eyes in my pocket
Until they’ve dried, and it’s raining
Isn’t this how it all began?
It’s October, leaves are turning
Into the wind, I’m just a fan

"I don't know if you are fond of flowers, but these looked lovely and I think you will appreciate the scent." carefully she hands over a medium-sized bouquet of China Pink flowers, their petals white on the outside and a deep pink on the inside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
{ ⟡ } — 🙶 Flowers are exactly what allows the world to be worth living for; embellishing it & giving us more than we could be ever able to pay. 🙷 The Matron can't help but chuckle slightly at her own answer; blossoms would always sparkle impassionate emotions in her core. They formed part of unique & appreciated memories.
🙶 What I mean is I'm very fond of them, as far anyone can ever imagine~ 🙷
Delicate & dainty porcelain hands approach the gift with genuine care, as her eyes widen in pure surprise, as her fingers would caress the velvety petals carefully, adoring the way the colors formed a striking contrast, claiming everyone's gaze without a doubt. "The last time I saw those was in Ionia... long, long ago."
With practiced & smooth mannerisms; she leaned towards the bouquet to feel their wonderful scent. Even such tiny detail was a gift on its own. 🙶 How marvelous, indeed unique among thousands... you own my gratitude, Moon Warrior~ 🙷
With a subtle swirl of her wrist, a crown of open queen of the night & moonflowers, with a single pure white rose, had formed in her hands, solely to reverentially place it upon the Lunari's head. Gingerly combing silverish tresses behind one ear, the Matron seemed finally almost contented.
🙶 Hope you also like my small gesture... & could grace me with a shared teapot if you may at the Garden's pavilion. The weather is quite lovely tonight & I'm sure if you appreciate blossoms, the Rosariums would be highly charming to your eyes, dear. 🙷
