Let's tally things up, folks!
Ruby's entire depression arc is "resolved" by a one sentence exchange wherein she just... decides she's better now? 'Is this the message?' Ruby asks, on her knees in front of a not at all subtle broken piece of glass. 'That I'm just supposed to give up?' and then literally the next moment she sees Crescent Rose, the weapon she's been flinching from because it represents all the failures she hasn't actually grappled with this season, and decides that depression and suicidal ideation are for losers. Let's go fight a randomly evolved cat!
The group still doesn't care about Ruby's Volume-long struggle. What are you talking about, evil kitty? Ruby's never been confused, or weak, or feeling like she's broken. We're oblivious to all that. That's why we follow her, because we can easily ignore everything that's going on in her life and instead just focus on ourselves. Didn't she have a breakdown a couple of hours ago about having to lead all the time? Should we really be announcing the moment she steps out of the tree that we expect her to be in charge again? ... nah, it's fine!
I guess the overall message is that any and every horrific act is excusable because you're just being yourself? Sorry we doomed a Kingdom and have actively helped Salem in trying to take over the world. The horrors we've enacted are good things though because it means we're being ourselves.
Ruby is conveniently the only Ascended who retains all her memories. Can't have the protagonist undergoing any kind of actual change, after all.
Neo throws herself into the tree despite that going against every iota of her characterization. Will we ever see her again? Who knows.
Is the blacksmith lady Alyx? I still have no idea.
Jaune is made young again, because of course he is. Love that they act like this is some curse he's suffered from - "It's been so long..." - and not an actual life lived across several decades. If I got stuck somewhere for twenty-ish years and then someone tried to magic me back to my 18 year old self I'd be like wtf? No? I'm not a teenager??? Will the show ever acknowledge that Jaune is actually an old man in a de-aged body now? I doubt it, considering this plot-line had no impact on his personality, skill, or outlook.
Also love that the brothers' story is treated like this wonderful tale of growth and exploration. The blacksmith is going on about how amazing it is that you don't know what you'll get when you create something, tone all fond for the demi-gods that have left her world to toy with new ones, and I just wanted one of the characters to start screaming about all the horrors they've caused. They killed an entire population in one fell swoop and have cursed two individuals for funsies, with the entirety of Remanent permanently under threat of annihilation if they don't meet the Gods' ambiguous standards of unity. Oscar didn't fall into the void because if Ozpin had been there he would have gone feral and attacked the blacksmith with his bare hands.
We're heading back to Remnant and Ruby still doesn't know that Jaune killed Penny! Ruby didn't even get her sword back. Or consider her in the tree therapy session. Why was killing her off necessary again? Oh yeah, Jaune angst🙃
We got a "when you're needed" from the blacksmith, so expect that time-skip in Volume 10. Can't wait to see how much important stuff the story skips over...
Also, this is so minor in the grand scheme of everything else, but I YELLED when Summer admitted that she'd lied about the mission. For nine Volumes these characters have been dragging Ozpin for every problem under the sun including, in Volume 7, for the mysterious disappearance of Summer, only for it to turn out that she LIED about where she was going and on whose orders, setting him up to take the fall when she doesn't come back. Who's going to have Qrow apologize to Ozpin for blaming him for years? Who's going to have Ruby unpack that her whole family is made up of liars and she was foolish to think that anyone, including Ozpin, could survive this war with a completely clean record? Hell, who's going to have Ruby simply tell anyone - including her sister - what she now knows about her mother's death? Not the RT writers, I'd wager.
Especially when they gave us a scene of Summer leaving on what she recognizes may be a suicide mission and leaves a token of affection for one daughter but not the other. Summer is Yang's mom too! Yeeeeeaaah the story is really bad about actually writing that.
Overall this Volume just feels like a colossal waste to me. The story ignored most of what was set up in Volume 8, introduced a world it didn't have time to flesh out, threw in an unnecessarily shocking story line about the hero trying to kill herself, 100% dismissed the ramifications of that, reset everyone so that none of the characters have to actually grow or change, and has now implied that all the plot important stuff - the Atlesians' survival in the desert, trying to ally with Theodore, Salem's next attack on Remnant, the development of most of our B Team, etc. - has occurred off screen.
The only thing this Volume accomplished was getting the bees together, which was something we should have had years ago. That admission hasn't changed their dynamic in any way, or introduced new conflicts (remember, no one cares about Ruby's breakdown, including her correct accusation that Yang has cared more about her girlfriend than her struggling little sister). It's just... there, not queerbaiting anymore, thankfully, but that feels like a very low bar to meet.
2+ months later and all I'm feeling is

It’s The Supreme’s World: We just live in it…
Some world building and character info for the Re-Verse and how it affects Marinette, Adrien, and Gabriel before we get into the next Kamikotized hero.
Peace was never an option… It was an ultimatum.
While World Peace Day is celebrated everywhere, truly, only Capital Cities are able to host the full splendor of such a magnificent event.
Paris is famous for never being outdone when it comes to this extravagant and cherished celebration:
Throughout the day, on every corner of the city, you could find a rare sight you would not see any other day of the year- flower carts.
Usually, flowers were too expensive for just anyone to purchase, so florists only sold the finest, most delicate and exotic flowers to appeal to the high class.
But on World Peace Day, cheap, less popular flowers were made available so even those of low income could enjoy the rare luxury of owning a real flower;
Perhaps it is a frivolous purchase, but even the most stingy of penny-pinchers could not resist the urge to loosen their purse strings when offered a single pink carnation for the ridiculously low price of only €20!
Flowers weren’t the only thing worth buying-
There were street vendors with international fare offering a variety of delights one would expect from a carnival or festival. Each seems so exotic when they come from a culture different than your own; takoyaki from Japan, bratwurst from Germany, frappe from Italy, Cotton Candy from the United States of America.
(Yup, spun sugar is originally a traditional american food invented in 1897 by American citizens William Morrison, and John C. Wharton, and it remained a unique American speciality until it was introduced at the 1904 World Fair. The irony? One of those dudes was a dentist.)
It is a culinary trip around the world without the cost of voyage.
Unless you were a vendor, of course.
While plenty were local, many more would venture from their homes to capital cities for World Peace Day, knowing they could make a larger profit than if they were to sell their goods at smaller towns.
Some even traveled from out of country, it was a huge investment for a single day, but one that would immensely pay off if they could convince customers that their goods were more authentic.
There was also a lavish parade with floats decorated in peace lilies, white poppies, hyacinth, cosmos, pincushion flowers, red peonies, and lavender, all carrying red banners with the symbol of The Supreme.
Marching bands play folk music, and talented performers in costumes from all over the world perform traditional dances.
It is a feast for the eyes seeing all the different cultures that were united for the sake of Peace.
Of course, the most beautiful sight (that you have to pay an admission fee for) is in the Jardin des Tuileries where all the metal sculptures and plastic foliage are removed to make room for impressive, imported floral displays;
Tudor roses from Britain, Quatre–temps from Canada, Dahlias from Mexico, Cattleya orchids from Brazil, Meihua from China, and naturally French Iris at the center… All countries in the world are represented by a display of their national flower, to symbolize how all nations came together under the guidance of The Supreme.

Roland Dupain loves World Peace Day more than Christmas!
Poverty had become common place after the Great war- the whole world seemed dull and grey. But the people endured to rebuild what had been lost. Roland Dupain’s grandfather had perished in the war, and his grandmother had to raise 2 sons on her own, one of which would marry Roland’s mother.
Then, WW2 began.
Both his father and his uncle went off to fight, following in their father’s footsteps.
5 months passed before Mrs. Dupain received word that Roland’s uncle had been killed in action.
A miserable year passed and the world descended into Hell-
Nazi’s invaded France and took control of Paris.
Parisians lived in fear and battled with hunger every day. A pregnant Mrs. Dupain cried herself to sleep, having lost all hope of ever seeing her husband alive again, resigning herself to her fate of having to bring a child into the world that would never know their father…
Then, the unthinkable happened;
The Axis Powers abruptly and unanimously surrendered!
Not to the Allies Forces…. No, something far greater and more powerful.
There was dancing in the streets! Peace at long last!
Tanks and weapons were disassembled, materials and rations that had been collected for the war efforts were donated back to the people, armies were permanently disbanded, and Roland’s father came home.
Oh, that euphoric feeling of relief and utter joy when Mrs. Roland leapt into her husband’s arms, weeping tears of joy.
No more war, no more bloodshed, no more hiding in fear, no more starving!
From now on, theirs was a world of everlasting peace!
ALL HAIL THE SUPREME!
2 months later, Roland Dupain was born, and every year until his father’s died from Tuberculosis, Roland was regaled with stories of the suffering caused during the War, and how The Supreme was their savior.
Ever since, Roland Dupain has celebrated Peace Day with fond memories and a sense of pride…
Which is why his greatest shame is his wife, Gina.
The same woman who hard the nerve to lecture him about about family values when he was ready to disown his son for marrying an outrageous woman who wouldn’t even take her husband’s last name and who had nonsense ideas about experimenting with time-trusted recipes, (flour from rice?? Peuh! That’s not how it’s done!).
Gina, with her big speech about how nothing was more important than family…
She brought disgrace to their family when she was arrested 2 years ago for civil disobedience and public disturbance!
Well, there was no way he was going to allow his granddaughter to go down a criminal path!
The world was tough but fair; so long as you work hard and follow all the rules, no questions, you won’t have any problems.
So simple!
Marinette needed to learn to how lucky she was to live in a world under The Supreme’s protection.
What better way to do that then helping her grandfather sell traditional Pain de campagne to tourists on World Peace Day?
It was a tradition started by his father, that he had carried on and tried to continue with his own son (until that wife of his put crazy ideas in his head like how pain au chocolat would be more popular.) but now, he would continue this tradition with Marinette- she would become part of a proud history, develop a sense of service, and most importantly, stay on the straight and narrow!
Children need discipline, after all!
She would thank him, one day.
-Marinette strongly disagrees.
Up until she was 11 years old, for Marinette Dupain-Cheng, World Peace Day was all about yummy treats, exciting parades, and pretty flowers.
While her parents sold pastries, her Nonna would take her strolling around the city to enjoy the excitement!
Then, just a few months before she turned 12, Nonna was sentenced to 8 years in a penitentiary labor camp.
Now, World Peace Day was about carrying baskets of rye sourdough bread, lectures on how things were and were not done, and the same old stories Grandpa Roland had already told her hundreds of times before, all while watching everyone get to have fun.
It was like having detention outside of school!
The worst part was the elderly tourists who would gush over her and pinch her cheeks for ‘being such a good girl who helps out her grandfather!’
Apparently being a “good girl” didn’t entitle her to personal space.
Seriously, why did people feel entitled to put their hands on her just because she was a kid?
Mom and Dad were no help; her Mom believed this was important quality time with her grandfather that she’ll appreciate someday when she’s older.
Dad’s opinion was, as always, that her mother was right.
You know what’d she’d really appreciate?
Getting to celebrate World Peace day instead of lugging around crusty bread made from overly fermented yeast! It was like her grandfather had an allergy to delicious food and having fun!
Grandpa Roland claimed World Peace Day was his favorite holiday, yet he spent the whole day either selling bread or complaining about how other people were selling bread wrong, how people dressed was wrong, or how people looked at their phones while walking around was wrong!
No one seemed to know how anything was “done,” save for him, and honestly? Marinette was 100% done with all of it.
—
For Adrien, World Peace Day is now the one time the city doesn’t stink in the literal sense.
The amount of actual flowers should help offset the stench of chemical fumes.
But he didn’t use to think that way…
World Peace Day used to make him happy, because it made his mother happy.
When he was little, his mother would giggle at the spectacle of Adrien-tallest in the world, as he sat atop his father’s shoulders for the best view of the parade in all of Paris.
Her smile was even sweeter than the sticky residue she tried in vain to wipe from his cheeks because Père didn’t hesitate to buy him every sugary treat that caught his eye.
Her voice was like a song as she pointed out and named each and every flower in Jardin des Tuileries to him, and as much as he wanted to pay attention, it was a hypnotic lullaby paired with a sugar crash that left him in a sleepy daze in his father’s warm embrace as he was carried home, his last conscious thoughts his mother’s kiss upon his forehead as his blanket was tucked tight around him.
As he got big enough to walk without being carried, he toured the celebrations with his parents each holding his hands in theirs.
Father still had his sweet tooth, despite mère playfully scolding him, reminding him of the lecture Adrien would get from the dentiste.
He was old enough to listen to her name all the flowers now, but too excited about the exotic music and the foreign dancers to really pay attention to what she said.
Though he did hear, and make a face, at his father’s mushy declaration that mère was the most beautiful rose in the world.
He never really noticed that mother’s grip on his hand was starting to weaken.
Years passed and he was too busy checking that the path ahead was clear of bumps and dips to notice any candy vendors or dances. His father was also more focused on pushing mother’s wheelchair than enjoying the parade.
Mother’s tone was still cheerful as she admired the flowers, but Adrien was too worried about whether the outdoor air was making her cough worse, her words went in one ear and out the other.
Last year she had been too weak to get out of bed. She had been too exhausted to watch the entirety of the parade on TV- visiting Jardin des Tuileries was out of the question.
Adrien would have given ANYTHING to listen to her list off the different flowers, he swore he would commit each one to memory.
Now….
Was there really any point?
He’d seen all the dances dozens of times, the music was also pretty boring.
There was nothing special about the food vendors, and too much sugar was terrible for your skin anyway.
He honestly didn’t care about flowers.
World Peace Day was just another over-rated holiday that people obsessed over to temporarily forget the mediocrity of their dreary lives.
What a joke.
—
For a young Gabi Grassette, son of a pommes frites vendor, World peace day meant sweets; Barbe à papa, English toffees, Mexican chocolates, and Polkagris!
Their family didn’t have a lot, but on this most special of days, his Papa would allow him some spending money to enjoy what the world had to offer~
At 8 years old, he was practically grown up, and able to walk up and down the street by himself.
It was the first World Peace Day he had a clear memory of, it was also the first time he saw a real flower up close.
Back then, he hadn’t really understood what his parents meant; things were either “real” or “imaginary”, weren’t they?
He was able to touch the plastic flowers his mother decorated their kitchen window with, and last week in L'Ecole Primaire his teacher taught him how to fold fleurs de papier. Those were plenty real enough!
Why would adults waste euros on something silly like flowers when they could buy candy instead?
Gabi couldn’t believe he was already so much smarter than everybody else! That was probably why he was allowed to enjoy the celebration by himself unlike other children who still needed adults to watch them.
That was until he stumbled across “it”.
A single blossom that had fallen off a parade float, carried off by a gentle breeze, only to land delicately at his feet.
It was so much more fragile than he’d imagined;
The petals were just as thin as paper, yet surprisingly soft to the touch.
Its center was fuzzy? A scent not unlike the perfume he was used to, but not the same either- it was both more airy yet more bold, but like a passing whisper- there was no strange undertone to remind him of cleaning sprays.
The stem was flexible, to a point. It was smooth with a certain give. If he pressed a fingernail to it, it tore a little, but instead of revealing wire inside, it was just more green- a sticky green.
The leaves had… creases? The lines weren’t painted on, they were embedded in the leaf itself almost like…. like… veins.
Veins, as if it were….
Alive.
This tiny thing in his hands wasn’t made in a classroom or a factory… it was ALIVE.
He had been told that flowers and other plants were things that grew from the ground, but he had never fully understood what that truly meant until now.
Flowers, REAL flowers, were delicate, fragrant, colorful, and ALIVE and it was the most amazing thing Gabi had ever seen!!!
But, why was something so precious only celebrated one day of the year?
Why were there so few?
Why didn’t the adults grow them everywhere? Why did they have to settle for paper or plastic ones when real ones were so much better?
It wasn’t the first time he, or any child for that matter, had questioned why the world was the way that it was, but for Gabi, it was the first time he had questioned why no one was trying to make the world better.
While his childhood had given him the blissful ignorance of believing that a certain holiday was all about delicious treats and beautiful flowers, with adulthood came the wisdom of understanding that World Peace Day was supposed to symbolize the end of the violent history of the world that would never again be repeated.
But only the enlightened were able to realize what World Peace Day was really about;
Worshipping The Supreme.
Some speculated that The Supreme was a small group of the world’s greatest minds.
Others suggested The Supreme was a single individual, appointed by the Divine Almighty to lead the world to salvation.
A remaining few even dared to imagine The Supreme as God himself; righting the wrongs of humanity and guiding them to the perfect world they could have been before the Tower of Babel.
Perhaps that last one wasn’t too far fetched-
After all, the way all the World Leaders agreed to surrender their power after WW2 without hesitation was almost as if they were compelled by some supernatural force…
In order to ensure everlasting peace for generations to come,The Supreme reshaped the nations of the world;
Monarchies were archaic- being able to trace your incestuous genealogy back to the dark ages didn’t qualify you to have any sort of authority.
Elections were flawed and allowed money, baseless propaganda, and empty promises, to fool voters and keep the greedy and corrupt in power.
That’s why wars over natural resources, religious superiority, or ethnic cleansing used to be commonplace throughout history- the wrong people were put in charge of governing the masses.
Only exceptional individuals who will uphold the ideals of a utopian society should be given that kind of power.
Mayors, Governors, Senators, and Prime Ministers/Presidents were replaced with High Officials, Grand Officials, Executive Officials, and Executive Administrators…
All of which were selected by The Supreme, and who answered only to The Supreme.
Only The Supreme could decide what those “utopian ideals” were, and no one else had any say.
Once, Gabi had been foolish enough to believe that was what was best.
After reinventing himself, from his name to the people he associated with, becoming a member of high society allowed to walk amongst the rich, the powerful, and the celebrity elite, Gabriel Agreste was finally able to see past all the bureaucratic smoke and mirrors.
No one truly had the best interests for the whole of humanity at heart.
Those with authority obeyed The Supreme out of fear and a lust for power.
Connections with the rich and influential were shallow at best; today you were friends and colleagues, but tomorrow they may very well stab you in the back to turn a profit.
In the end, the power to decide what was justifiably right or criminally wrong belonged to The Supreme, and their word was absolute.
If there was anything to take away from that, it was that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

The Magic of Love
⚠️TW:⚠️ Stalking, delusional behavior, hypnotism, one mention of God
"And now, the one, the only: Y/N L/N!"
The crowd cheered and clapped as you stepped on stage.
You were a young and bold magician, rising in popularity at the speed of light. It felt like just yesterday, Hypno saw you performing basic tricks outside the park, a mere few pennies thrown into a top hat.
A small fragment of Hypno was envious. After years of hard work, those snobs didn't even spare him a glance, but you managed to achieve his life long dream within a mere few months?
But, he was able to push those feelings aside when he saw how happy you looked.
The tricks you performed had a sense of originality and perfection, you having practiced them again and again.
You were his soulmate. The person he was going to marry. The woman that God had designed for him to spend the rest of his life with.
Hypno knew it.
However, you were beautiful. Your smile could rival the sun, the sound of your voice could send even the most talented singer into a frenzy, and the rose's envy the color of your lips.
And he was a hippo. An animal. A beast. He was the garbage on the side of the road compared to you.
You would be disgusted by him.
He had watched you since that very night, and now here you were: at the largest magic society in New York.
Wearing a S/C suit, you graced the stage with your shining smile and eye-catching tricks, a fiery passion in your eyes. Even John the Kaiser, inventor of the Pinky Shuffle, was holding back tears!
After half an hour, you gave a grand bow and exited the stage, the audience chanting your name in praise.
Meanwhile...
You walked off stage with a smile on your face. They loved you! You were surprised by how well the performance went, you were certain something was going to go wrong, but it all went smoothly!
"Hey, Ms. Y/N! Ms. Y/N!"
You turned around, wondering who was shouting your name.
You flinched when you saw four turtle yokai's standing before you. They all wore black suits, but the tallest wore a red mask, another one had two red streaks on his eyes and wore a blue mask, the smallest wore a bright orange mask, and the fourth dawned a purple mask. They all appeared giddy to talk to you.
"Oh, hello." You greeted them, "Can I help you?"
The blue-masked turtle repeatedly stumbled over his words, confusing you even more.
The tallest of the group cut in, putting a hand over his companions mouth. "What my brother means to say is, we're really big fans." He chuckled.
To say you were taken aback was an understatement. You had fans? You were still pretty new and it was your first performance at the most famous magician society in New York City, and you, of all people, had fans?
The smallest turtle shyly approached you. "Can you sign my pamphlet?" He asked nervously. You smiled, he was just adorable!
You signed their pamphlets and even took a picture with them. They waved you goodbye and you turned back to return to your dressing room.
As you turned the hallway, you were face-to-face with another woman. She had flowing brown locks and shining emerald eyes, wearing a low-cut dark green satin dress with an open back.
"Hey!" She greeted. "Name's Y/N, right?" She asked. "My name's Venus."
Venus de Magic? The Queen of quick-change? Talking to you?
You quickly composed yourself. "Yeah, my name's Y/N." You told her. "Can I help you?"
Venus smiled. "I just came to say I loved your performance!"
You thanked her and the two of you conversed for what felt like hours. The rumors were very much true; Venus was incredibly kind and charming, even giving you a few ideas for new tricks.
You exchanged contact information and bid each other farewell as you made your way to your dressing room.
You past numerous staff member's and other magicians, most of which showered you in praise, while a few whispered and gossiped in envy. But you just brushed the other small majority off. They weren't worth your time and thoughts.
You opened the door, relieved. The weight of the public watching you fell from your shoulders.
In the corner of your eye, you could have sworn you saw something peering at you through the window.
You shrugged it off, however, choosing to take a seat at your vanity.
Gazing into the mirror, you could only sigh.
You still couldn't believe that the girl in the mirror was you. In school, you were bullied relentlessly for wanting to be a professional magician. But here you were, a successful magician with her entire life ahead of her.
You wished you could see the look on your classmate's faces; Y/N, the famous magician, staring them dead in the face and telling them what pieces of shit they were.
Within your reflection, you saw a bouquet of rose's sitting beside your bag. Furrowing your brows, you rose from your seat.
The dozen rose's were bright and in full bloom. The smell sent a shiver down your spine, as if they were picked just yesterday.
Attached to the bouquet was a handwritten note.
The note was written in cursive, like a letter from a period drama. It was deeply personal, the writer confessing their undying love for you. The amount of information this person knew about you made goosebumps on your skin.
Impulsively, you ripped the note in half, dropping it onto the floor and stomping on it with your shoe. "I'll bring this up with security in the morning," you thought.
Meanwhile, Hypno had watched the entire situation through the window and was furious. After everything he memorized and all the time he spent planning your life together, you denied him?
This will not do.
Five Months Later...
"And in other news," The reporter smiled at the camera, "The search for famous magician Y/N L/N has reached its fifth month. She was last seen at the Magic Town House five months prior. If anyone has any information regarding this case, you are advised to call your local police department or tune in to Crime Stoppers."

Delusional + Overprotective + Obsessive
• Hypno is quite the hopeless romantic
• When he first saw you, it was love at first sight!
• While you don't even know he exists, he's convinced you're his soulmate
• Your beauty, your smile, your laugh, the way you talk, he's absolutely enchanted by you
• But he's way too nervous to speak to you
• He's a hippo. A literal animal. He's, quite literally, a beast compared to you
• He can get envious/jealous at times by your success
• But he genuinely adores you
• He is a magician, he's meant to be putting on shows and displaying tricks
• For example, leaving a bouquet of fresh roses in your dressing room
• Warren often tells him how entranced he is and how it gets in the way of plans to stop the turtles
• It's like you used hypnotism on him
• Despite his fears of you being disgusted by him and his appearance, he loves the size difference
• However, it goes without saying that Hypno does know how to be manipulative
• If you don't reciprocate his advances, he can rely on his spell
• Only a word and you're under his spell
• You'll be his pretty little puppet!
• He become's more delusional if he does hypnotize you
• This is true love
• He knows it!

Liked on YouTube: Almost Famous - The Real Lives of Groupies || https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4YIGbxOT_8 || Almost Famous (well, Untitled - the director's cut of it) is my fav movie. But that doesn't mean I don't want to peel back the curtain of 70's teenager nostalgia on an infamous time in Rock and Roll and talk about the behind the scenes. Penny Lane, well, Kate Hudson's portrayal, captured everyone at the time and was and still is many people's wardrobe inspirations but she's actually based on real people. Everyone in the movie is honestly, though it is a sanitized version of the truth. As you know, here we like to uncover the reality, and we're doing just that with groupies, talking about some of their lives, the attitudes of rockstars, and how this way of life got corrupted not only by business but by exploitative super stars. Let's connect: IG: https://ift.tt/CG2BXPg Business enquiries only:

AUG 845
Levi leans back onto the door of Mae's house, as he sits on the steps waiting for her to return.
A fight brews in front of him. A scrawny man gets caught red-handed, trying to steal bread from the vendor, who sits with baskets of bread on the floor.
The passersby don't even bat an eye, as punches are thrown around. And the homeless men, lined on the street, peek through the blanket they sit huddled in. Watching how things unfold.
Earlier fights like these would only happen in the evacuation centers, but these days they happens on the streets as well.
The scrawny man is thrown to the ground with a jab to his stomach. He is weak and Levi can see his spine popping through the shirt as he tries to get up. His lanky arms shake in rage as he fists some soil in his hands. He lifts his rand up and throws it on the vendor's face.
It's a lousy technique quite really, but also effective if you're lucky.
The vendor staggers back, as the soil prickles in his eyes.
In an instant the homeless men spring to their feet. Gathering around the vendor, grabbing as much bread as possible. And he can only scream, as people rob him of his only hope of earning some money.
People stop, as they see the vendor stumbling around helpless and anguished, rubbing his watery eyes that burn in pain.
They swallow thickly, should they help him? Or steal a piece for themselves? Because god knows they need it.
Wall Rose is on the brink of destruction. The land has been milked dry, the wastelands are barren and infertile, hardly producing much crop for consumption.
People are starving on the streets, begging for a morsel of food. The price of which has increased so much that it has become unaffordable to the middle class as well. The taxes are skyrocketing and earning even a single penny has become equivalent to finding a drop of water in a dried up well.
And since the Operation to reclaim Wall Maria has come out, the chaos has only tripled in number.
The economy is at an all-time low, and people know that sending the evacuees outside will only make their lives easier.
But most families have someone or another, who once resided in Wall Maria. An Uncle, a friend, a sibling or just a friend, who they learned in school with.
And no matter what the benefits entail, they are still losing their loved ones. And how can they openly agree to lead their loved ones to their own death?
So they riot and cry, banging their fists against the doors of the civilian court. They plead against this unfair system, desperate to somehow get their relatives out of that horrid operation.
The Royal Government listens to them. They set a fee, a price to get a person out of those evacuation centers. A price to let them live as a regular citizen.
But Levi know it's all a pretense, just some shitty policy, to give people hope, but only until they break down and realize that it's all fucking impossible.
It's just like the surface citizenship fee in the underground, so high that you won't be able to make up for it even if you worked your entire life.
He sighs quietly, as he looks ahead. It's hell everywhere. Sometimes he wonders if it's even better than the Underground. Sure the sky looks bright and pretty. But in the end it's all the same. The same bullshit again and again.
The crowd in front of him gets bigger, as people push and pull, yank each other's hair. Fighting for the resolution that has settled in their mind.
Far towards the end of the street, he catches her silhouette.
Her strides are small and heavy, and her shoulders have drooped forward like that of a wilted flower. Hands push her around as she walks through the fighting crowd, but yet her head hangs low, unable to take its gaze off the ground.
Time flows slower and every step of hers only increases the worry that hangs in Levi's heart.
"Mae."
"I'm not in the mood today," her voice is wobbly and low, almost lost amidst all the commotion happening right in front of her house. She fiddles with her keys, not even sparing him a glance. The sound of a small "click", fills the air and the door opens.
It has been like this for 2 weeks now. Him finding her door locked and waiting on her porch. And her telling him that she's not in the mood to teach him.
"Mae-" before he can complete, the door shuts close in his face.
Mae stumbles inside the house, hands heavy with the bags she is holding, and eyes burning with unshed tears. A few steps more forward and she flops to the floor.
The bags fall, its contents spilling outside along with the tears trapped in her eyes.
Her ankles are still sore from all the walking, and her mind body craves the rest it has been ridden of for so long.
She's been doing this for days now. Knocking door to door, asking for any job. Cleaning the bathrooms, being a maid, she'll do anything. As long as it pays, any job is fine.
The clinic isn't doing well. People come injured and weak from all the brawls they have been fighting. But they hardly have any money for food, how will they have some for treatments ?
It's so bad that even her own expenses are coming out of her savings.
Ailments are only increasing as food becomes scarce. And people are suffering physically, economically and even mentally. The least she can do is not let them die just because their pockets don't have enough cash.
So she treats the patients that come to her either ways. Some days if she's lucky she gets a few dimes, some days an apple, and sometimes it's just a heartfelt smile.
But smiles aren't going to help her get enough money to get her parents out of that dreaded mission.
Knocks reverberate, and her head turns back towards the door. Whoever it is will have to come another day, she doesn't want to see anyone right now. She doesn't want anyone to see her breaking down like this.
But the knocks continue to echo through the door. 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and they still stay persistent.
Her patience wears thin, and she gets up and lumbers towards the door. Hoping that its someone important, who has been knocking for so long.
Standing on her toes, she glances through the peephole.
It's Levi. She sighs as she wipes the tears off her face. She doesn't want him to see her like this.
A shaky hand extends forward, twisting the knob and the door swings open.
Levi can see how miserable Mae is by her disheveled appearance, and yet she flashes him a tight-lipped smile, despite the red in her eyes
"Stop acting, you're not fooling anyone," He says, words cutting like a chiseled knife. Sharp, swift and deep. And Mae can feel the heaviness growing in her throat.
That's the fucking problem, isn't it? She's always failing, failing at being a doctor, failing at saving her parents and even failing at putting on a pretense.
Her lips tremble as she swivels her head. He can see the wobble in her step as she walks back towards the heap of dresses in the center. They are splayed all over the floor, spilling out of the bags. And she sits beside it, an even bigger mess than all that's around her.
Her hands reach out, as she starts folding the garments on the floor.
He kneels down beside her, helping her wind up all the mess. Her gaze is still down, fixated on the clothes she is folding, but he doesn't miss the tears on her cheeks. They roll smoothly, in silence.
The air is thick, laced with fragility, and Levi tries his best to figure out what's happening.
His fingers rove over the dress in his hand. It is soft and brighter than the faded clothes she wears every day.
"You were selling these." He says. His gaze is soft, and she completely misses the worry that flocks in his eyes.
"It's all I have," she murmurs, her voice hoarse and feeble.
At the end of the day, she is just one in a hundred others, trying to save her loved ones. How could she be naive enough to think that she'd actually collect that ridiculous amount of money
Her eyes glance away, looking for any sort of distraction. They land on the cream-colored fabric tossed aside to her far left.
She reaches towards it and hovers it up in the air. Levi watches its flowy netted cloth sway in momentum, and the white silk that shines underneath it.
A crisscrossed lace covers the center of the bodice, forming a knotted bow in the center of the waistline. And floral embellishments decorated the zigzagged hem of the skirt.
"It's pretty isn't it." Mae almost smiles as she thinks back to how pretty she feels in that dress, it accentuates her features perfectly. Levi decides he likes it too. It's dainty, beautiful in a delicate way.
Her mind wanders to the days her dad would come home very late. Working extra shifts just so that he could make her this beautiful dress.
"I got it for my 18th birthday." She presses the dress to her chest, a little closer to her heart. A whimper escapes her throat, and her shoulders shake as the dress falls to the floor.
She knows it's all useless, who would care about dresses when food itself is scarce?
But how can she give up on her parents, who have done everything just to make her happy? Who have loved her unconditionally and have always wished for her best?
How can she stand still and not do anything when even they know that a few months from now they are going to have the most brutal death she can ever imagine?
"Le-vi," her voice cracks "I can't save them... I can't...save them." Her palms press into her eyes as buries her tears in them.
Levi doesn't know what to say, he never knows what to say. He's too brash for his own good. Even at times when he wants to be comforted, he can only focus on the bitter truths of this unfair world.
Silence hovers over, and her sobs echo off the walls, piercing his ears and he can only look at her helplessly.
"I'll get you some tea?" He believes it's the only thing he can do. His blunt words bring no solace, and no one wants to be with someone who can shatter their delusions in seconds.
She doesn't say anything, nor does she look at him. But Levi walks away on his own, searching for an escape from the emotions that sheath the atmosphere like a deathly fog.
The kitchen is bleak, almost drowning in darkness. The curtains are closed, stopping the sunset rays from painting the room orange. The candle on the counter flickers dimly, and the shelves that were once stocked with fresh fruits are almost empty, with just some bread and vegetables in them.
As the months have passed, the economy has only dropped lower. Resources are slacking and at this point, having anything other than bread is a luxury.
For once in his life, Levi feels lucky.
He doesn't earn much, but most of his living expenses are covered by the Survey Corps budget.
This is one of the rare times in his life where his meals aren't compromised, and he has a bed to sleep on, despite the tumultuous situation. And it's been so long since he has felt such safety and stability.
Grabbing the cold metal handle, he opens the shelf. The packet of tea that he kept here a month ago is right in front of him.
His eyes travel across the shelf boards, searching for milk or any other condiments. But they are barren, empty and colorless.
His fingers slide down his pocket, to find some cash in it. Sugar is missing and she likes her tea sweet.
Stepping out of the kitchen, Levi finds Mae curled up on the couch. Piles of clothes are still scattered on the floor, some folded and some messily cluttered.
He walks towards her, and stares at her sleeping figure. Faded tear trails are smeared across her cheeks. Her hair is rumpled, strewn across the couch, in messy waves. Her nose is still red and eyelids, closed.
He doesn't know what he would do if his family was headed to their death, and he couldn't do anything about it. But he sure knows that no words could pacify him in a situation like that.
His hand finds its way to her head, patting it gently. A soft sigh escapes his lips. Maybe if the money is enough he'll also buy some fruit bread. That's the closest thing he can find to pastries at the moment.

OCT 846
The weather is getting cold, the windows are wide open. And the hot tea cupped in Levi's palms is the only thing keeping him warm.
The candlelight flickers dimly in the jarring cold, and he stares at Mae's hunched form. She sits in front of him, reading the article he just finished writing moments earlier.
Dark bags weigh heavy under her eyes, and her shoulders are drooping down. He can see the trail of goosebumps that run up her arm. She doesn't care to wear a sweater in the cold wind. She doesn't care to make her hair anymore. And she has been like this for so long, that Levi doubts if she'll ever get out of the pit she's fallen into.
She takes his classes more often as well. 2 hours every night. And Levi knows it's all just a pretense. A futile attempt to distract herself.
It has become a routine by now. Mae gives him a topic, he writes while she brews some tea in the meantime.
They take a break. He drinks his tea, and she points out his mistakes.
And then she reads out to him. The Musings of a Murderer.
It's an interesting story, about a killer who leaves clues about his next victim, in all his previous murderers. And also the most relaxing part of Levi's day. He drifts into the story, curious to know what comes next.
Sometimes, she flips the table and asks him to read it out instead.
But he doesn't dare to do it all by himself. So many words are jammed into one single page, and their font is so small. Levi is intimidated just by the sight of it. And he doesn't want to attempt to read out loud and make a fool of himself.
His gaze shift to Mae, watching her eyes rove over the same line again and again.
She's taking way too long to read a small paragraph, merely a 100 words long.
She needs a break, and Levi doesn't understand why she's pushing so hard when she's at her limit.
"I'm a captain now." He breaks the silence. It's not like she needs to know any of his business, but the atmosphere is heavy. And he is tired of seeing her exhausting herself relentlessly.
Her gaze shifts from the notebook in her hand, to him in surprise. Reading and writing is vital and even though Levi is working on it. He isn't proficient at either of them. And yet he's made a captain, to guide people at the upcoming mission.
Then he must be good at what he does.
Mae leans back on the couch as her gaze flits down.
A little voice at the back of her head says that maybe he can save her parents. She's teaching him for free. He would return the favor, won't he?
She can show him their faces, and he can get them back inside the walls in one piece. It's just two people, isn't it? It's not like she's asking him to save all her friends and her relatives and everyone she has ever known.
"Levi," she calls out. Her eyes meet his and she stares at him.
For some reason he always looks tired. The dark patches under his eyes never lighten. Nor does the permanent frown on his face ever fade away.
And for someone reason seeing him, remind her of the despondent daughter and her wounded father whom she failed to save. And the feeling of guilt that came along with it.
So many nights have passed since then, spent crying about how much of a disaster she is. And then her mind reminded her of the life she took, and every time she fell into an endless pit.
The burden of a life is gloomy and sluggish, not running in her mind constantly, but it finds her when she's at her lowest. And in that vulnerable state, it hits her straight and sharp.
There is no escaping it because she knows that she only has herself to blame.
Then how can she pass it on to someone else, when she is well acquainted with that feeling of heaviness.
What will she do if Levi fails to save her parents, and then he suffers from the same devils. And carries the same burden that cripples her everyday. How can she impose something like that on him?
Levi still looks at Mae expectantly. An eye brow raised up, as he waits for what she'll say.
"How much longer will I be able to be with them?" Her voice comes out weaker than she expected.
Levi's body tenses. The Survey Corps often visits the evacuation centers, to check up on the physical state of the evacuees. And by now he is well habituated with the horrible condition they are in.
It's a dire situation, it really is. The evacuees are cramped and stocked, just some disposable means to an end. Still hated for not dying in titan territory. And now they prepare to go back there, with neither horses nor any formal training.
The government is out of funding, most of their money being spent on feeding the evacuees. The taxes have increased, but so many have fallen under the poverty line that they can hardly pay. It's a game everyone is losing.
Restaurants have shut down, no one stays in hotels anymore, and who even has the money for books, dresses or any other desires that their hearts harbor.
At the end of the day, it's just a matter of a couple thousand lives versus the whole of humanity.
And as cruel as it sounds it's also necessary.
"3 months," he utters with his usual indifference
"3 months..." Her voice trails off, and he can see the slight quiver of her lips as she looks elsewhere.
The silence is deafening, leaving the sound of him occasionally slurping his tea.
"I'm sorry, I know I should feel happy for you, but I just can't," she blurts out. "My life is such a mess, there's too much on my mind." Tears leak from the corners of her eyes. She wipes them away in haste.
The thoughts in her head get louder in the settled silence. And in her tiredness she forgets to finish reading the report, and giving the feedback that Levi awaits.
"I'm planning to make a trip to Sina... I'm going to sell my dresses."
Her dresses are far plain compared to what they wear in Sina, and they are second hand.
"You are not going to get much money from it." He speaks the truth, breaking any delusions she has, before she actually tries something and realises it's useless.
"I know, but every moment my parents are getting closer to their death... I want them to be happy in the little time they have, and whatever money I make, I can use it to do something for them."
"Do you need anything?" He speaks with sincerity. He's going to be busy from now on, but he'll try to help her with whatever he can.
"I'll be fine, I saved up some money." Levi frowns, and his jaw clenches. As if he doesn't know that already.
It clearly shows when he looks at the kitchen cabinets. Earlier they had some bread and vegetables, now it's mostly empty, with just a slice of bread.
And she doesn't even have tea, unless he forces her to have it. By now she has it his way as well. With no sugar or milk, that is a luxury she can't afford anymore.
"I'm going to meet my friends as well, they are in the eastern district... I won't be able to do much for them."
Levi sits confused, unable to figure out why she is sharing all of this with him. If it's comfort she wants then he doesn't know how to give it. Heck he doesn't even know what to say next.
Tears glisten in her eyes, but she doesn't let them fall. Instead, she smiles "I'm sorry for over sharing.... Let's get to reading shall we."
He clicks his tongue, a little annoyed by how she pretends that everything is alright when its clearly not. Placing his empty cup on the table, he gets up and sits beside her on the couch.
Mae picks up The Musings of a Murder, and opens it. But this time Levi doesn't feel the usual excitement budding in as she starts reading.
Her speech is expressionless. Her words are slurring, and she fumbles through the passage. Dragging her finger along every line yet not pausing at any punctuation or sentence end.
She's tired, so awfully tired.
"I want to read today." Levi speaks the words out and Mae turns towards him.
Her eyes are tinged red at the corner. Her skin is dull, and her hair is knotted in her simple braid.
She's tired, so awfully tired.
Levi takes the book from her hand, and she gives in without a word
He reads slower, hesitating and every word as his eyebrows crease in tension. She corrects him at a few places and explains to him the meaning of a few words.
Another page and he gets more confident.
She is silent, and his mind brims with assurance. He must be pronouncing everything right, because she isn't correcting him anymore.
Halfway through the next page, a heavy weight slumps on the side of his body.
It's her again. Eyes closed, face relaxed and her head resting on his shoulder.
Levi's face softens a little. For once, she looks peaceful.
So he sits still. She deserves some rest.
━━━━━━━━━━━━
JAN 846
Winter is here, and the poppies have wilted. The flower fields are barren, and the trees stand naked. The cold bites at Mae's hands as she trudges down the familiar path to the warehouse.
Her sandals are worn out, and its rough straps agitate her skin with every step. The lunchbox in her hands is long cold, and she counts the seconds as she reaches her destination
3 hours from now and her parents will be gone from this world.
The cold turns her nails blue. Her steps are heavy, and she doesn't know how she's finding the strength to physically move forward.
The warehouse comes to sight. It is gray and dull, overbearing just like always. The door is slightly ajar, but the wastelands are empty, as if they have been abandoned already.
Tears blur her vision, and everything starts looking disoriented.
It's been 6 months since the reveal of that cursed expedition, and time has flown by so fast.
Her dresses were sold. And in return she got plenty of mockery and some money. But it was enough to buy some vegetables and grains. And Mae used it all to make her parents home cooked meals.
For months, they were having bread every day, and now that their life itself was slipping away, they deserved to enjoy good food at the least. So every Sunday she would travel to the center, with some home cooked food, packed in a tiffin.
Some days the money still fell short, and she could only sleep on the couch, trying to silence her empty stomach after she reached back home.
Often she would feel a hand petting her head. And she would wake up to see Levi, with some bread in his hands. Somehow he was well aware of her schedule, and she would find him waiting on her porch for her return.
Then his duties as a captain started catching up, and he didn't have much time for her anymore.
But Mae still managed well on her own. She visited her parents every week, she also met her friends and relatives. She worked hard at the clinic, gathering as much money as possible. And every week she fed her parents healthy, colorful meals.
All that she had planned, she had done. Then why did everything feel so useless? Why was the heavy feeling of grief not replaced with satisfaction? She tried so damn hard, then why was she still losing her parents?
Her steps get heavier and her ankles falter as she falls to her knees. The jagged road pricks her soft flesh.
Any ounce of strength left in her has now vanquished, her resolve is crumbling. Her bones ache and her heart bleeds for their suffering.
She cries into her palms, feeling their warmth rather than watching the cursed warehouse.
A gentle tug on her dress pulls her out of her thoughts. A small boy stands in front of her. His unruly hair sticks to his forehead and his body is unhealthily skinny.
"Don't you worry, miss. We will defeat those evil titans, and then we will all be happy, with enough food in our plates," he chimes.
She inhales sharply as she watches the hope glistens in his eye, sparkling, brown and wide.
Her arms reach out to him, hoping that this boy is just a figment of her imagination. And his young soul doesn't have to face the terror that awaits him a few hours from now.
But her fingers retract as they touch his skin. It is dry and flaky. And her shoulders tremble as she imagines the brutal end he's going to meet.
She lurches forward pulling him closer as she cries into the crook of his neck. He wraps his arms around her as well, and she can feel his bones digging into her frame. "You are young enough to stay behind? Why are you going out?" she murmurs against his skin.
"All my family is here with me, I don't want to leave them," he replies thoughtfully.
A figure looms over them, casting a shadow on both of their figures. Mae looks up as the boy breaks the hug.
It's a woman. She's not very old, but her eyes are heavy with tears and her lids are swollen. And she is wrapped up in the recognizable cloak that everyone in the evacuation center wears these days.
It is swampy in color, designed to match the thick green grass that awaits in titan territory, so that the evacuees can hide themselves better. Or maybe it is just to differentiate them from the civilians who aren't a part of this mission.
"Come to me dear," the woman mutters sweetly, as the boy climbs up in her arms. She bestows a kiss on his forehead, and then scowls at Mae.
The both of them walk away and the boy waves back enthusiastically at Mae as his figure fades farther and farther, until he disappears behind the walls of the warehouse
And Mae wipes her eyes, as she holds on to the little resolve she has. She takes a timid step into the shelter.
The air is heavy, and she can't help but feel so lonely in a room full of people.
It is silent, unlike most days where bouts of fights occur on a regular basis. People sit close to each other, with their heads buried in their knees.
Everyone is decked in green, as if they are inhumane, mechanic workers with no choice or authority.
Her parents sit together, huddled at their usual spot. Mother's arm is draped over father's shoulder. And her head is hidden in the crook of his neck, but from the way her frame is shaking Mae knows she's crying
Father is right beside her, petting her back as he whispers reassurances in her ear.
Her feet start moving thoughtlessly, and she only finds them stopping when she's sitting on the floor with her parents, resting her head on her mother's lap.
"Oh my sweetheart," her mother says as she pets the hair on her daughter's head.
And Mae winces as she feels the suffering in mother's palms. Rough and dry, blistered from all the day, she would plow the fields.
Tears come easily, falling on the fabric of mother's worn out dress.
All these days, she tried not to let her tears slip by in front of parents. To be strong for them and to lessen their own pain. But she can't help it anymore. She's been holding them in for months now and her strength has withered out.
Her father fondles her hand in his, and she looks up at him, through her teary gaze.
Bald patches are scattered all over his head, and deep lines border his wise eyes and his forehead. And the little pot-belly he had, now curves into his spine.
He has aged so much just these months that he looks twice his age.
She pushes the lunchbox towards him. Today she has prepared his favorite dish.
His hands reach towards it far too eagerly. The food is cold, but it warms him to the bone.
All these days that she had bought food for them, she never had some herself. Because she was well aware that their struggles were much worse than hers. And whenever her mother brought a morsel of food in front of her mouth, she denied it. Telling her that she had a heavy breakfast this morning, and she was full.
But today as her mother says," Have some food with us before we leave." She can't help but give in to her heart's desire and have the closest thing to a family dinner.
They sit like that for a long moment. In stretched silences, dying smiles and weary eyes. Sharing the little amount of food that the lunch box contains.
The moment feels warm yet frosty, sweet yet bitter. And her parent's company only reminds her of the vacant void they will leave in her heart.
It's a mere stroke of luck that keeps her stay safe. She's a citizen of Wall Maria as well, but somehow she is safe from the catastrophe that her parents face. But does she deserve this? Will she be able to live without her parents?
"Father take me with you as well, I don't... I don't want to be here without you." Her face contorts into one of pain and her voice dangles on the edge of begging.
"Listen here Mae, are we all sacrificing our lives for you to come and die with us as well?." Her father speaks, and Mae presses her lips into a thin line, as she shakes her head.
"We are doing it, so that you can live a better life, isn't it? Things can go back to how they were before all this happened."
"But it will never go back to how it used to be..." Her voice trails off hoarse and congested.
"You will find strength, Mae. Maybe someone else will come along and give you a helping hand, or maybe you'll have to push yourself all by yourself. But you'll do it, because in the end you are all you need." Her father speaks with confidence, and when she looks at him, he flashes her an assuring smile.
But she stays still. Unable to listen to his words or understand them. Finding strength feels hopeless and all she wants is to be with them.
A heavy silence hangs over, it's their last moments together, and no one knows how to make a goodbye less painful.
In a matter of minutes. A strident voice pierces the air. "Evacuees assemble."
People get up and step out of the shelter. It almost seems mechanical, as if they all have surrendered to their fate by now.
Her parents get up as well. Mother straightens the creases on her father's cloak, and as they stand, they leave some space for Mae, in between them
Mae settles there, holding both their hands in her own, tightly.
The sun sets, leaving the sky in hues of pink. Then darkness takes over, things get bluer and bluer. Coldness creeps again, and a fog hangs over. Blanketing the land with an eerie glow.
They blend into the horde of people that step out of the evacuation center. And for a crowd of 1000s everyone is grimly silent. The only sound in the air is that of twigs cracking under people's feet. And teeth clattering against the cold.
They walk along the line of dying trees and barren fields. It's a reminder of their failure, and how they were unable to bear any good crop on these wastelands.
Maybe if they had succeeded, then they wouldn't be marching to their deaths as a burden that humanity can't carry.
Every step treads heavier, increasing the beat of their heart and the anxiety that churns their stomach. There is nothing left to say, just the tears that are streaming down their faces.
Time flies away, and in what feels like minutes, the evacuees enter the city of Jinae.
Mae looks around as she walks down the familiar streets of the town.
She sees cruelty in every nook and corner. She sees cruelty everywhere.
Alleys where children would run playing tag are now filled with people marching towards their death. And the vendors that made the bustling market, now stand rock solid. Rooted in their spot, as they watch the scene unfold, aghast.
The world is cruel.
People gather on the streets, and even in the darkness of the night, the fear that lingers in the air is palpable. Then the gates of Wall Rose appear into vision. Outside which lies Trost and beyond that lies death.
Mae's grip on her parent's hand tightens as she watches the Garrison soldiers move forward, to open the door.
Her parents turn back, and their features are blurred by the thick veil of tears in her eyes. Her hands jerk forward, cupping their face as she traces the lines, on their face, for one last time.
Her mother pulls her into a hug and Mae can feel her breath on the side of her face. It's weak and trembling, like a stretched out band, that will break any second now.
She's going to miss her so much.
Caroline Edler. The aroma of home-cooked meals that floated in her house. The lessons taught under the flickering lamp light and the love that held her together when things were falling apart.
The gates of Rose open and Mae flinches at the jarring sound. This is it, the dreaded moment. Silence fills the air, and no one dares to move a step ahead.
Her father wistfully stares , as she cries into her mother's arms.
Once she was a little child, small enough to fit in his hands. Now she's all grown up, taking care of her parents all by herself.
One day she'll get married, one day she'll have kids. And he won't be there for any of that. He won't be here to see his little daughter grow anymore.
His hand reaches atop her head, and her head swivels in her mother's embrace
Mae's eyes are glimmering, fresh with tears meeting his just as wistfully. This time there are tears in his own as well.
This is the first time she has ever seen her father cry.
In an instant, she's embracing him. And he can feel his shirt dampen as her tears wet his skin.
"Oi," He cups her cheeks and looks at his daughter for one last time. She has always been the most beautiful girl in his eyes.
He presses a tender kiss on her forehead.'' Are you going to bid us farewell with such a tear-stained face? Won't we be able to see you smile? For one last time."
The sentence makes her cry even harder. And she sees the patience that reflects in her father's wise eyes.
Dieter Edler, the strength that held the walls of her house. The long shifts that ensured that everyone had all that they wanted. And the warm eyes that sensed every low in her mood, and held her together.
Always so patient, so determined, so wise. And she's always tried to be like him.
Mae tries to smile, but it crumbles in the flow of her tears.
The bell rings and its echo spreads terror throughout city. The time to let go is finally here.
Garrison soldiers pierce into the crowd of people, forcing the evacuees forward as the evacuees find their feet frozen.
Mae cries in her father's arms, and holds her mother's hand, unable to move, or let them out of her grasp.
Hands pry her away from them . And she looks back at the soldier who's pulling her away from her parents.
"I'm sorry miss... I'm so sorry." Sympathy reflects in his eyes, as he gently holds her back.
Her parents smile at her through their teary faces as they turn towards the gates. And then they lumber away, hand in hand, a heavy step forward at a time.
She blows them a kiss, but they don't turn back.
Their fading silhouette is blurred by the ceaseless onslaught of tears in her eyes. The evacuees trudge forwards into Trost. And soon their olive cloaks vanish into the darkness.
The show is over. Civilians disperse, in a hush, shoulders bumping into each other as they walk in the opposite direction. But Mae stands still in all the commotion.
She realises it's not just her parents that she has lost.
Far away in the eastern districts, carts loaded with another 1000s rush towards Trost. Somewhere in those cramped boxes are her friends, sitting with eyes as teary as her own.
She has lost everyone today. Friends, cousins, acquaintances, everyone... People that she didn't have the money nor time to go and meet. And with them, a part of her is ebbing away.
A heaviness spreads all throughout her chest. It is pain. The light in her eyes burns away, as a rush of wind sweeps by, people are moving back to their houses. The evacuees are gone, out of their sights, out of this wretched world.
A few more people stand, just as frozen and suffering the same fate as hers. Silent rivers stream down their cheeks and their shoulders quiver with grief. But she fails to see them.
All she sees is herself, alone and lonely, drowning in the darkness of this world.
All she sees is a part of herself, forever lost at the cruel, mercilessness of the world.

How would they react if you ask them to dance?
Freddy :
"Heck yeah !"
Freddy is one of the only slasher that is musically cultured. He can spot good hard rock from a mile away. He is a rock and roll fan to the end. Just, put on any hard rock song and you will see his eyes literally sparkle in delight. He would dance with you until the end of the night. Literally.
" Come on darling, let me turn your world upside down !"
He would pretend having a guitar in his hands and laugh while shaking his head up and down with the rhythm. In rare moments, he would actually forget where he is and start singing with the lyrics.
"~She's got a smile that it seems to me
Reminds me of childhood memories
Where everything was as fresh as the bright blue sky
Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I stare too long, I'd probably break down and cry..."
Surprisingly, Freddy has a great voice and, when given the opportunity, will make the slashers enjoy a live concert of his. In those moments, not even Pennywise dares make fun of Freddy. Freddy understands your love for old music, and god, does he got the moves ! You swear that when he is dancing, you forget all about who he is and who you are. If you weren't dancing before, you certainly are now. 😂
Surprisingly enough, Arthur would not join right away. He would first see you dance and enjoy himself watching you having fun with the other slashers. But once he is sure that nobody will judge him ? He will join and dance to his heart content. Many people have ways to express themselves, hobbies that help them de-stress..But unfortunately for the slashers, that hobby was mostly killing people. You try to make them see that they can do the same in many different ways. Joker, however, is a very special case, because he actually tried to escape with dance and jokes..People destroyed his dreams. Now, you have to help him get back his hope and the dreams he lost. The first step to do that ? Make him remember what he loved, before becoming the Joker.
" Why do you want to make me believe in something that is gone ?"
" Because I believe in you, Arthur."
He waited for someone to actually believe in him for so long that he can't help but cry at your words. He would then take you for a dance and make you laugh for the rest of the night. He doesn't mind you old-fashioned taste, as he prefers old songs as well, especially the catchy ones.
" Dance ?! Dancing ! Yesss !"
Penny screams while throwing his hands in the air. He loves dancing. It was the only thing he had when he was alone and penniless. He was dancing in the street in his old clown costume, hoping for some generous souls to find him entertaining. However, when he became Penny, his dance became the last thread of his old life he hanged on to. It may have been a way to lure his victims in as well, but it was also much more for Penny. He loves dancing. He is also very good at it, being a very flexible person with a great creativity. His dance may look childish at first, but it's only because he never got the proper training. You asked the hospital to give him some lessons, but unfortunately, they didn't want the dance teacher to become dinner. This is how you had gotten the idea of Friday's dancing nights. It allows the bond between the slashers to strengthen and for Penny to learn more about what he loves.
" Penny dances ! Penny is so happy !"
Well, just make sure he has the dance floor to himself, as you wouldn't want any of the slashers to receive a slap or a kick on accident..He doesn't really care about the music, as long as he can dance on it.
Dance ? What is dance ? When he sees you and the other slashers dance, it makes him think of those teenagers at Crystal lake. He is not too fond of dancing. He will however stare at you and sometimes, even nod his head up and down with the music if he likes it. But, if you try to make him dance with the others ? He will freeze. He is not used to dancing and never cared enough to learn. For a long time, it had only been his mother and him, therefore he hasn't had the chance to make friends or open up enough to dance at parties. He likes watching though. Most of the time, he will stay with Five or Michael, the only ones to understand his predicament. Plus, he doesn't know or understand most of the songs you're playing. He tried to ask you what they meant, but most of the words you used to answer him only made him more confused. Love ? Hope ? Loss ? He doesn't understand them. However, he does understand grief and sorrow. Those are feeling he can relate with as he felt them when he lost his father. When a sad song comes in, he will pay more attention and feel a tug in his chest.
" My boy. You have to live your life as you intended. Don't let anyone tell you what you should or shouldn't feel. One day, the ones who bullied you and called you names will see how amazing you truly are."
The words of his father echo in his head as he listens to the music. He has nearly forgotten about his face, but his voice is still with him, advising him wherever he goes. He just never took the time to listen to him until now. He always thought that his mother was everything he needed, that she was the only one who loved him, but maybe was he wrong after all ? Maybe other people could accept him ?
*internal panic*
He knows how to dance, that's not the problem. It's just that it's been so long that he's afraid he's gotten a bit rusty. This is why you will most likely find him hidden in a corner, watching over you all. At this point, he is more likely to play the role of the quiet big brother who is making sure none of his siblings accidently hurt themselves or have too much to drink. However, if you really insist, he will try to enter the game and make a few tentative steps on the dance floor. But, dont expect too much of him. He is embarrassed enough as it is. However, he will help in the kitchen if you need to bake something of prepare some snacks for the slashers. Another thing to know about Michael, is that unlike Jason that doesn't mind raising his mask a little to eat or drink, Michael will prefer to wait until everybody is gone or asleep before letting himself do the same. He is very keen on his mask and doesn't want anyone to see him without it. So, maybe prepare a little space away from prying eyes for him to have intimacy ? As for the music, he doesn't mind. Everything is fine with him.
Unlike Penny, Pennywise is not that much of a dancer. Penny is a dancing clown, Pennywise is a grouchy clown. He would rather be sarcastic all evening than partaking in the fun. However, something that he is good at is inflating balloons. He will help organize the party and will try to entertain Penny as much as he can. Pennywise may not be a dancing clown, but he cares about Penny. Penny is the closest to family he has left, and even though he would never admit it, he would do anything for him. He is protective of him and if it meant making Penny happy ? He wouldn't mind playing the clown for a night.
" Stop looking at me like that. I'm not gonna dance. You can't make me. Invite Penny instead. He's far more excited to make a fool of himself than me.."
He would reply when you invite him to dance. He doesn't care about the songs, as long as they don't have any curses in them. He loves cursing, but he doesn't want Penny to follow his example. He wants him to keep the little innocence he has left.
(couldn't find a gif with Five, so imagine it's Five in the second gif.)
He will not dance. Not even if you beg him. He will be happy if you leave him alone with the drinks. He will mostly stay with Michael and drown his bad mood in alcool and most likely complain.
"Goddammit. Can't we have decent whiskey in here ?!"
However, if you really insist and he has enough alcool in his system ? He may follow you and make some moves on the dance floor. Maybe.
" I swear you all suck. It seems I'll have to step up to level the game. It's not because I'm having fun or I like any of you, it's just because you bunch of idiots can't differentiate good dancing and monkey dancing."
Five got many classes on how to be the perfect spy while being trained. Let's say that there were some more enjoyable classes than others. He knows how to dance as a result and will steal the dancefloor when given the chance.

Deadline’s Tony Award Picks & Predictions 2021: ‘Jagged Little Pill’ Or ‘Moulin Rouge’? Hiddleston Or Gyllenhaal? Choices For A Most Unusual Year
[Speculations on the 74th Tony Awards. Remember to take with a pinch of salt]
I'm glad I took notes. Looking at the roster of nominees for this year’s too-long-delayed Tony Awards is all the reminder anyone could need of just how interminable Broadway’s Covid pandemic shutdown has seemed. Productions and performances from the 2019-20 season, many reviewed nearly two years ago, are calling out – some more forcefully than others – to be remembered and honored. As I said, I’m glad I took notes.
This Sunday, the Tony Awards ceremony will be livestreamed on Paramount+, then immediately followed by the two-hour CBS concert special Broadway’s Back!, a celebration of Broadway’s recent reopening after the shutdown of 16-months (or 17 or 18 depending on which shows you decide were the official comebacks). Pre-pandemic, the Tonys originally were scheduled for June 2020, but March of that year brought the sickness and an abrupt shutdown of the industry that would leave a mere 18 productions eligible for the awards, down from 34 the previous year. The awards were postponed twice, most recently – thought it certainly doesn’t feel recent – a year ago when the nominations were announced.
As many as 16 shows scheduled for spring 2020 fell out of the Broadway schedule (and Tony competition). Some – including Six, which was supposed to open the very night of the shutdown, and Girl From The North Country, which like the revival of West Side Story had opened but had not yet fulfilled its Tony voter requirements – would certainly have made at least the Best Musical race a healthier contest.
So the Tony organizers – the Broadway League, the American Theatre Wing, CBS – had some big decisions to make, even after the year-long postponement that seems, in retrospect and at least to me, wrong-headed. First up was how to get the network to continue its broadcast tradition for an annually low-rated event that this year would, quite literally, be a mere fraction of its former self.
The answer – and we’ll know Sunday whether it was a good one or not – was to essentially split the difference. A few big awards – Best Play, Best Musical and Best Revival of a Musical – will be announced live during the CBS special (and also streamed on Paramount+) but the bulk of awards are set for livestream only, a move that seems at odds with Broadway’s recent endeavors to position itself as something not just for wealthy New Yorkers and spend-happy tourists. Paramount+ does, in fact, offer a free trial period, so Broadway fans who don’t want to pay for a streaming service can watch the show without spending a penny – just make sure to cancel before the trial ends – but still. The visuals, as they say, aren’t great.
Certainly in some ways, this split decision – the livestream-broadcast hybrid – makes sense. The abbreviated roster of nominees and the year-long delay was always going to be a tough sell to CBS, and just as certainly Broadway fans want to see how even some of the less ballyhooed competitions play out. What will Moulin Rouge‘s Aaron Tveit – the sole nominee in the Lead Actor/Musical category – say when he takes the stage? And which of the nominees for Best Original Score will prove literally memorable? That category includes no musicals – repeat, no musicals – since each of the Best Musical nominees were of the golden-oldie jukebox variety. That left the plays to handle the Original Score burden – and left Tony voters trying very, very hard to mentally summon just what, exactly, the incidental music of The Rose Tattoo actually sounded like.
As a commercial move to promote the reopening of Broadway (and boost much-needed ticket sales for Broadway’s current line-up, even if it includes only a few of this year’s Tony nominees), both the postponement of the ceremony and the expansive concert special seems justifiable. The Tonys have always been as much an advertisement for sales as a recognition of achievement. But as a way to celebrate the productions and performers who hit the stages prior to the March 2020 shutdown, the decision feels less defendable. Even without CBS, a livestream or digital Tonys last fall would certainly have felt more immediate (and, in a way, hopeful), with nominees still fresh in minds and everyone – including, I suspect, more than a few in competition – still feeling fully invested.
So. After racking my brain, checking my gut and deciphering scribbles in old notebooks, my picks and predictions in selected Tony categories are as follows. Of course, the only sure bet is Tveit – though even that one-nominee category could, theoretically, see an upset: Tony voters could choose not to give that award at all. Won’t happen, but after the last year and a half, is anyone still capable of being surprised?

BEST REVIVAL OF A PLAY
Betrayal, Harold Pinter; Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, Terrence McNally; A Soldier’s Play, Charles Fuller
Will Win: A Soldier’s Play | Should Win: Betrayal
The beautifully performed and directed Betrayal was a revelation – a Pinter play as downright entertaining as it was thought-provoking, but Fuller’s long-in-coming arrival on Broadway with his modern classic A Soldier’s Play all but demands a win. Of course, Broadway could choose to honor McNally, the beloved stage icon who passed away from Covid last year, and whose Frankie and Johnny remains an essential part of the American canon. Still, for me, Betrayal is the production that stands out.
--
BEST PERFORMANCE, LEAD ACTOR/PLAY
Ian Barford, Linda Vista; Andrew Burnap, The Inheritance; Jake Gyllenhaal, Sea Wall/A Life; Tom Hiddleston, Betrayal; Tom Sturridge, Sea Wall/A Life; Blair Underwood, A Soldier’s Play
Will Win: Hiddleston | Should Win: Sturridge
Hiddleston was terrific in Betrayal, and has every right to the trophy, but for me Sturridge in A Life gave the most powerful performance in the category as the grieving father whose family was destroyed by a single instance of atrocious happenstance. Other devotees of Sea Wall/A Life might choose first-time nominee Gyllenhaal (and I’d have no serious complaint there), and Underwood is certainly a popular and enjoyable actor (though saddled with the least interesting plot-device character in A Soldier’s Play). Barford and Burnap are extreme long-shots, leaving a four-man race with Hiddleston the likely winner if only by a slight edge.
