to be clear, I think Rose Tyler being an often-selfish character is great. I think it's great because real women are selfish. Real women get petty. Real women hear their ex boyfriend say he's going out with a mutual acquaintance and get unfairly jealous and real women then say things like "she's a bit big" when they shouldn't and they have no right. Real women can be monsters, and Rose Tyler is relatable and I love how she is written and I love her, thanks for listening

the thing I love about rose and the doctor is how easily they fell into each other like do you get what I mean ?? they just easily gravitated towards one other and got so close so fast.

like they were holding hands almost immediately after they met like all the time and the way they talk to each other and just AHHHH DO YOU GET WHAT I MEAN DO YOU UNDERSTAND

IN s2 idk what ep. maybe the 3rd or 4th ?? the school episode. sarah jane smith shows up. from what I know she's an old companion and was obviously important to the doctor and you could tell they were probably super close. but. in the ep we learn he left her behind after the time war, most likely couldnt get himself to go back. the time war affected him in a lot of ways. but rose showed up one day on one of his little adventures and he decides to ask her to come along not ONCE but TWICE. in the ep rose is upset about the doctor leaving sarah jane behind because then the doctor might do it to her but the doctor tells her "No. Not to you." like rose is sooo soo important to the doctor and I am in pain

I got into Tumblr in the first place because Doomsday left me a blubbering mess and Journey's End created too much angst. I needed to find my people--the people who were suffering through the same thing! After so many years, I still am amazed at how much of a reaction RTD was able to wring out of the audience. In honor of his return to Doctor Who, I thought I'd share my watercolor of Rose Tyler. Her increased maturity and sadness in series 4 was really very interesting to capture. Her downcast eyes reminded me of the Pietà. I also made a 15 sec Youtube short video on the painting process. I just couldn't help myself. I just had to use the Doctor Who theme music!

Not sure if the Whovians are still hanging around Tumblr much. If so, I definitely read all your fanfics on AO3 to help console myself! Big Finish audio dramas notwithstanding, maybe now we'll finally get some answers on what Rose has been up to in the other universe?

nuwho doccyfication series: Rose Tyler

So, the first NuWho doccyfication post will be on the first NuWho companion, unsurprisingly. These posts are coloured by my personal opinions, don't expect objectiveness, I'm not here for analysis, just to share my thoughts. This will be long because it's the first one.

Rose Marion Tyler, Powell Estate, working girl who met the Doctor at age 19. She spent two seasons with him, doctors 9 and 10, as he regenerated at the end of season one.

So, we meet her at the start, she's a shop girl, has a boyfriend, essentially living an ordinary life. She cares for people, which is something we see throughout. She risks her life to help others, even total strangers. She falls in love with the Doctor, which is the pivotal point in this post.

Because she's a nice person, helping out, and the contrast between her and the Doctor is what brings the Doctor back to himself. He starts as a broken shell of a man from the War, and she essentially helps him heal, because seeing her kindness reminds him that he wasn't kind, which is why he needs to be now.

Rose falls in love with him and he falls in love with her. Honestly, I don't think Rose has much of a doctorification arc, Except when she's trying to save/help the Doctor. She looks into the heart of the TARDIS, risking her life to save him, and this is the first time I can really point to and go "this can be taken as doctorification". The Doctor and the TARDIS are inextricably linked, and so by linking herself with the TARDIS, she is taking on part of him. It's like she can understand him better, because she's seen what he sees: "but that's what I see, all the time!".

Also, "The time war ends". She destroys the Daleks, living creatures, to end the War for him. Like he did. Taking on his burden because she's changed him too much for him to do it. Plus the bringing of eternal life to Jack? Saving people whilst breaking the rules of time is very Doctor, especially as she goes too far and brings him back forever.

Anyway, back to the TARDIS. This glimpse of ✨him✨ allows them to grow closer, and after his regeneration she gets more adventurous, risking her life more often, as happens with most companions. Essentially they become comfortable around each other so she starts adapting, becoming more like him. I want to draw your attention to Army of Ghosts, the start of her leaving- "This is where I died". During this, she put on a lab coat, investigated, made speeches to Daleks- she was very Doctor-y.

There were other episodes, especially in season two (where as I said, we can really see her becoming more adventurous and changing more. This is partly because I feel like we didn't have 9 long enough for me to feel really connected to him, so I just didn't really register the arcs during that era because it was too short!). But all good things must come to a close, and I don't want to delve into specific episodes, so I'll leave it there.

Summary: the Doctorification of Rose Tyler seems to pivot around their love for one another, and the way they change each other through that love. I wouldn't say it's obvious, you might not even be able to call this doctorification, but they do change each other and so that's doctorification enough for me.

the Doctor travels to 2005, London, and blows up a building. he meets Rose Tyler.

they hit it off, and she travels with him for a time.

she is trapped in a parallel universe.

two-ish years later, they reunite, but uh-oh! Dalek shoots the Doctor! he manages not to regenerate by channeling the energy into a severed hand.

Donna touches the severed hand. triggers a metacrisis whatsit that grows a human!Doctor and gives Donna the brain software of a time lord.

Donna's brain cannot handle that. the og!Doctor erases her memories of all things re: him, and sends Donna back home.

some years later, Donna has a child. the lingering metacrisis transfers to child, somehow.

child grows up with vague memories of Donna's time with the Doctor and various stories the Doctor told her, thinks of them as make-believe and imaginary friends.

child Transes Gender, needs a new femme name.

draws on their childhood memories. hmmm, Rose is a nice name.....

Doctor visits Donna again after a recent regeneration. stuff happens. Donna remembers the Doctor but brain does not explode, the Doctor and Donna are still besties, he hits it off with Donna's family including her child, Rose Noble.

somehow, there's a yet another extra David Tennant Doctor distinct from the og!Doctor now??

this new surplus Doctor settles in as platonic life partners with Donna. he functions as essentially a funky uncle/third parent to Rose Noble.

sometime later, adult Rose Noble has a child of her own. she has continued to grow with stories of time, space, and Gallifrey, now directly from the Doctor. when she needs to name her daughter, she chooses a name linking all of that history, and names her daughter the Gallifreyan word for a plant so similar to the Earthen rose.

Arkytior Noble grows up in a fantastic, weird family.

one day, in her early teens, she commandeers a time machine--vortex, TARDIS, whatever--and travels. Farther than Arkytior means to.

she winds up on Gallifrey. where she meets a restless time lord, young despite his head of white hair, as curious and hungry for adventure as herself. with a newly chosen name much like Arkytior's mother has her own chosen name.

when he introduces himself as "the Doctor", Arkytior laughs.

"oh, you're my grandfather!"

"I'm what?? since when did--"

"from the future. timey-wimy stuff. don't worry about it."

and with time travel at her disposal, Arkytior doesn't really need to return home quite yet. there's so much to explore! how convenient she ran into someone who will become one of the people she trusts most in the world, who was just planning to set off on his own explorations.......

they travel for a time.

centuries and lifetimes and faces later, the Doctor travels to 2005, London, and blows up a building. he meets Rose Tyler.

i wrote so much today :D made progress on the ororo/scott fic (only three scenes left!) AND started a new fic!

“Weird, hypothetical question,” she begins, as they sit down. “I know this is going to sound totally crazy, but... if I asked you what year it is, would you be able to tell me?”

“It’s 2023,” says Marion, unwrapping her sandwich. Being a little too careful not to make eye contact.

“It is,” says Yaz. “And how old is the Queen?”

Marion tips her head back. “She’s...” She seems to be doing some quick subtraction. “Ninety-six or seven by now, I guess?”

Yaz nods and takes a bite of her sandwich. “The Queen died last year,” she informs Marion, putting her hand in front of her mouth to hide the chewing. “There was a bank holiday.”

“...ah,” says Marion.
