Elizabeth & Rainbows
✤ When Queen Elizabeth II passed away two beamingly bright rainbow's arched over Buckingham palace & Windsor, many took it as a comforting sign that she's with her husband Philip again. Even at the late Duke's funeral back in 2021, the first reading spoken was: "Look at the rainbow and praise its Maker; it shines with a supreme beauty, rounding the sky with its gleaming arc, a bow bent by the hands of the most high".
✤ Some thought of the rainbow-bridge, rooted from the Greek messenger goddess Iris, who could travel between the heavenly realm & mortal earth with the rainbow as her bridge. People refer to it when someone passes as the link between that which is visible & invisible.
✤ Others thought of something far more bespoke to Elizabeth, her rainbow wardrobe, as she famously wore bright & bold colours as she knew she had to be seen to be believed. She continued making herself seen beyond death, because those rainbows kept on coming, Prince William counted 5 since & another was captured on the eve of her funeral.
✤ Rainbow's in general are a modern emblem of inclusivity, unity, we all belong. Everything Elizabeth stood for & often referred to in her speech's, especially when mentioning the commonwealth. Plus are a sign of renewal, promise, hope & new beginnings after weathering stormy times.......& we are in a new era & reign now.
✤ But there's one more prismatic link & I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. A painting of Elizabeth's namesake-400-years-plus-predecessor, The Elizabeth I Rainbow Portrait which is covered with curious emblems, from ears & eyes speckled on her robes, to a coiled Snake embroidered on her arm & in her right hand she is holding a rainbow, with the Latin words hovering above: Non Sine Sole Iris : No rainbow without the sun.
Art historians say the rainbow represents peace & the painting is another way of showing Elizabeth as the Sun itself; without her, no rainbow; no Elizabeth, no peace. What I find most amazing is, although she is depicted as verdantly youthful the painting is actually from the latter years of her reign in her late 60's, that Elizabeth II gave us a Rainbow at the end of her reign as did Elizabeth I hundreds of years before. Two shared a name & a symbol. 🌈
