not gonna put this on the post itself bc that feels rude and i think this is maybe an unpopular opinion but actually i don’t feel like maddie’s ending was bad or wrong in any way! it felt like a happy ending for her, whether or not it was considered a happy ending for the audience.

the thing is, is maddie is the middle ground. she cares about felice and her feelings, and she agrees with some of felice’s criticisms about the school (verbally or through her actions), but she never truly goes all the way. she reassures stella and fredrika that if the school was going to close because of what felice said, it would have already, but she doesn’t reassure felice that she was allowed to say whatever she needed to say. in a lot of the conflicts between felice and stella and fredrika, maddie is a silent bystander or a mediator. she is just as hard for felice to be honest with as stella and fredrika. she doesn’t take a side. stella and fredrika want everything to remain as it was—they want to uphold the status quo and keep their traditions. felice sees the problems with this, and tells the truth, which brings the whole thing down. maddie sees the problems, but doesn’t actually seem to care about changing them in a significant way. and that’s why she doesn’t get to get her “happy ending” at the end of the season (although again i do think she was happy with her ending! this was happy for her!).

i love maddie! a lot! i think she’s certainly more likeable than stella and fredrika and much less classist. i would have liked to see her get more screen time, and if she had, that might have changed my position on her ending, but as it is, i think it feels like the right choice for her and her character. with the open-endedness, i think she and felice will remain friends in the future, and things might happen that we don’t get to see, but that doesn’t need to be shown on screen.

Idk what higher power convinced me from 11pm - 5am to just HAVE to draw Dream and Nightmare as horses from mlp (god dammit I’ve never even watched mlp) but HERE WE ARE

I put waaay to much time into these drawings not to color them so once I line them I’ll do that

Anyway I wasn’t sure how to incorporate Nightmare’s tentacles in this design, buuut here were a couple of things I wanted to do/design choices and why:

I wanted to make them both alicorns with Nightmare having webbed wings (with hints of feathers and trauma)

I decided Nightmare was going to have armor and a royal vibe/aesthetic (like the king he is)

He also has horseshoes with pointed tips and ankle armor and neck armor cause yes.

I wanted to give him even more armor but I thought it would be too much

The cutie marks are their respective apples, but I wanted Nightmare to have, well, a Nightmare Moon thing going on where there was discoloration around the mark (excess of slime in this case)

I did want to incorporate sun and moon elements into the curie marks as well, but I figured I could do it in clothing instead to not overcrowd the cutie mark design and have it lose its meaning.

The slime around Nightmare’s cutie mark is constantly flowing and dripping off of him and if you looked closely his apple may appear purple instead of black through the drips

Ok while I’ve never really watched mlp I don’t live under a rock and I’m aware of how similar Luna and Celestia are to Nightmare and Dream, plus I looked up different designs and species and if you couldn’t tell Nightmare’s HEAVILY Nightmare Moon coded (she also slays btw I love her).

As for ideas about Nightmare’s tentacles I figured maybe he could have a sort of shadow magic maybe??? That acted like his tentacles in a way? Idk I’m workshopping it.

Or he could pull a Rapunzel and have his mane and tail act as his tentacles (which is kinda why his hair looks like that, as I wanted it to look slimy and thick, and for the “tentacles” a bunch of the chords would wrap together to create the tentacle like shape).

Idk mannnn I’m trying but horses and tentacles just don’t really go together juuuust sayin

I actually wasn’t gonna give Dream his cape/shawl thing cause I forgot he had it but I looked at Dream’s ref again and thought it was fitting enough.

Dream’s circlet got turned into a helmet cause I thought it would match Nightmare’s vibe a little more and I wanted to do more than just put it on his head ya know?

I’ve also been seeing designs with Dream having his hair braided and I thought it was fitting so while u can’t really see it, Dreams mane consists of a bunch of thick braids and the nape of his neck he just cut his hair cause otherwise his braids would get tangled in his wings so he said be gone lol. (Nightmare’s tail is also partially braided and I like to think he also braids his mane too into one large braid I just didn’t draw it that way :().

idk if this has any merit to it so correct me if i’ve got the wrong idea but a thing i’ve been thinking lately is that the biblical dichotomy between jew and gentile (which new testament scripture teaches is no more) is sort of reborn in the modern dichotomy between like.,,, cradle catholic and random atheist/agnostic

point being, God will reach out to everyone. even those who aren’t doing all the little traditional rituals right, even those who don’t know what they’re doing, even those who just walked in out of nowhere. so the former need to remember to have humility and compassion for others who are trying their best to seek truth.

this is not to say the former are doing anything wrong by going through all those motions- of course not! and of course those motions aren’t insignificant; they’ve got so much history and tradition behind them. but ultimately they aren’t what save us. the foreign gentile who just showed up one day is baptized and saved. the deathbed convert is baptized and saved. funny how that is

the devout jewish people of the scriptures and the modern day hardcore tradcaths are neither better nor worse than other people- they are the people fortunate enough to be born in the ‘right’ environment, so encountering Christ and being saved will be much easier for them. but this also means they have a responsibility to do more.

and if they go haywire in the way they behave the consequences will be so much worse because of what they’re supposed to be representing (and i’m sure we all know that biblically the jewish people have caused lots of their own problems and presently. well. a lot of catholics Suck™️. we are all that person sometimes. often. usually)

Now that I’ve had time to fully digest the drop and all the opinions I’ve read today, I want to try to put some things into perspective.

Not everyone is going to love season 2. It’s inevitable. We’ve all been here for a year, some of us since the very beginning, talking about the show every day, talking about our favourite scenes as nauseum, some of us reading and writing fan fictions and speculating over what’s to come, and all that is great and a lot of fun, but I think like most things, it can be too much of a good thing. We become too invested to the point where we all have our own wants and desires of how we want the story to go and most of the time, that’s not going to align with what the writers have planned, because this isn’t our story. It’s there’s.

I totally get it it some people aren’t in love with the footage we got or where the story is going. That’s totally valid. Like I said, we’ve all been so invested and have our own thoughts on where we’d like the story to go. I have my own trepidations, and I’ll even share them: I worry that the show might end up spending too much time with the revenge plot and not on the other aspects of the show that made us fall in love with it in the first place (the themes of love and friendship above all odds in the face of adversity). I worry it might become a little melodramatic and perhaps too ambitious for its own good - it’s only 6 episodes and there are so many threads left from s1 that need to be expanded on, on top of a new character and new storylines. I worry they might have gone too far.

Having these worries is normal and I don’t think the alternative is any more helpful - the alternative being blind faith in the writers and assuming they will make all the right decisions (ie. “Lisa would never do that”, “trust Lisa she knows what she’s doing). However, I do think there is a line between blind trust and faith and having no trust and leaning into negativity.

The fact of the matter is, we probably won’t love every element of season 2. It’s not going to be everything all the fans want it to be, nor should it be. If the show was exactly like all of our favourite fanfics or theories, it wouldn’t be the vision of the writers anymore; it would belong purely to the fans, and that’s not how filmmaking works. Think about all the movies and shows that get blasted for indulging too much in fan service.

The stakes are so much higher now that we’ve been invested for so long. The best thing we can do is give deference to the writers and give them the opportunity to tell the story they want to tell, and when we’ve finally seen it in it’s entirety, then we can decide whether we liked it or not, and everyone is entitled to have their own opinions, praises and criticisms.

At this point, we have a mere 4 minutes of footage and essentially a skeleton of the plot with very, very little actual details. Let’s not ruin it for ourselves before we even see it. I have my concerns but ultimately I just wanna be excited to see what these creative people have come up with.

Will I love it? I don’t know, but I don’t want to go into it assuming either way.

I really can’t stop thinking about Red White and Royal Blue (film because i tried to read the book at work and it justtt wasn’t for me babe) and the idea that it escapes all criticism by fans who are hyping it up as romcom queer rep and I need to tell you right now sweetie, baby. This movie is bad. There is absolutely not way this is a good film. The fact that this is a gay movie made for straight people and that’s a different argument in itself. It’s just baffling because I think we need to truly rethink the representation argument in the age of digital media and streaming.
