Riyria Chronicles is so funny because Royce and Hadrian never set out to antagonise the church but that’s what happens. Every single time. Half the time they don’t even realise it

Michael J Sullivan literally wrote two of the best fictional men ever, who have incredible character development and fleshed out personalities, great character arcs, strong and capable but not alpha male, and treat their love interests so well that it’s basically peak romance whenever they interact
And ya know what, I think we really have to thank Mrs. Sullivan for this

I love that while Royce may be the horrifying assassin man who everyone associates with death, realistically speaking Hadrian probably has the higher kill count. Royce went after individuals and occasionally anyone who got in the way of his killing those individuals, but Hadrian participated in wars and massacres. On multiple occasions. He probably killed more people in one night than Royce did over the course of a year. And there's something about this dichotomy that is soooo interesting to me, especially because I think it really colors how they view death and killing. Like yes they were both brought up with a very different foundation on the subject, but the way they've killed has also been different. For Royce, he either figured the person deserved it or it was personally beneficial for him (very them or me). But Hadrian often felt like he didn't have to. These were just guys doing their jobs. These were guys he fought alongside just weeks ago. These were people defending their city, or taking it back, so of course the idea of killing is more disgusting to him, even just based on the way he did it in the past. This also makes it understandable why being a gladiator would have some appeal, because he only has to kill one to five people in one go rather than ten or more, and all of them (theoretically) choose to be there for no other reason then to fight, so of course it feels more noble than what he was doing before, until the tiger.
It's just so fun that everyone considers Royce to be the more dangerous because he's more volitile, which is an accurate assessment, but if either of them should really smell like death, it's Hadrian.

Royce: Am I a good person? No.
Hadrian: But are you trying to be better?
Royce: Absolutely not.

So I was thinking about how Hadrian is always the one to cook their meals on the road yeah?, and the fact that Royce - by what we get to know throughout Riyria - wouldn't be able to cook anything to save his life
So what would he do without Hadrian?
I thought honestly, he'd probably eat an animal raw if he had to (if he had no money, no rations left, and there's no food to be stolen anywhere near - which are all scenarios those two manage to find themselves in rather regularly lmao)
So I had this wild image in my head of Royce just tearing into some raw meat while Hadrian's sat next to him staring in utter horror

We all remember Royce is descended from Nyphron and Persephone but don’t forget he’s ALSO descended from Moya ‘went to the afterlife and immediately antagonised a god’ of Rhen and Tekchin ‘literally stabbed his friend in the back so he could get back to his girlfriend’ of the Instarya

Hadrian and Royce calling each other unicorns is absolutely SENDING me. (Also Royce comparing Hadrian to Montemorcey and Alverstone, two of his favorite things? I simply can't with these two.)
