idk what it is about ttrpg viddy games that gives me SUCH a strong instinct to save scum rolls for skill checks. not even consequential ones! having this intellect devourer as a pet or not clearly wasn't going to have any Actual bearing on the tutorial level of the game! in a live ttrpg I would be perfectly happy, even delighted to accept failures like that as just canonizing particulars about the world & my character's interaction with it, but I find it Interminable in a single player rpg.

I think it's the completionist instinct paired with enumerated options. the fact that the game wrote out this option means they've Put Something There gated behind the check. I would Like to See It. & because this is a video game with static options I have much less faith in it to do something interesting with the failure, or give me another way to come back to this particular thing in the future. I can't even ask the gm wtf was up with that thing we missed after the session.

also the fact that I have to pick from a menu of options instead of describing of my own accord what I'm doing I think makes me go into it already sensitive to my lack of agency. if I am picking from constrained options that choice should be meaningful. I don't then want to be told "well, that didn't work. go pick one of the options that suits your character even less well"

space - OOOOOHHHHH BUDDY. oh man. first of all, vash hasn't been back in space since he was a child, so that'll be. fun. :) second, because his powers are back and he uh. doesn't exactly take good care of his wellbeing, he would most definitely use his abilities to defend others, even though there is a high likelihood of this killing him and sending him back to the start. this is also the area i would be the most interested in doing a group rp! be not afraid :)

10 Projects

I am a few weeks in grad school pursuing an MFA and a common question that has been presented to me (starting with the application process) are what are other works of art that inspire me or are my favorites. It begs the question "What do you I really like??" It's something that I haven't really put a lot of thought on until recently since it has come up so often now.

It's forced me to put more thought into that question and formally pick things out, categorize it, and log it into my brain so I can more properly draw from these inspirations later. As a part of that process, I'm starting with these 10 "projects" that have inspired me in some ways in the past. The term project is used loosely and varies from things I've seen, played, or other artists, but let's start the list!

the 2D animated movie Klaus

To give more context as to how much the movie amazed me, I have to talk about past sentiments while I was completing my BFA in animation. When I was an undergrad, 2D animation was pretty much written off as a dying and antiquated art. Disney had officially closed the last of their 2D animation studios not long before I started my BFA, reasoning that there is much more time and work involved in hand drawn animation in comparison to 3D animation. I feel a lot of people treated that as nail to 2D's coffin, which saddened me to say the least. I wasn't really able to pursue it as a result. Only classes being offered at the time was cell animation during my undergrad, and I focused more on 3D as a result.

But this movie really changed how I felt about the legitimacy of 2D animation. The fact that the studio was able to make their own software, creating new technologies for the art which really amazed me. Makes me feel that it is only a matter of time before the technology for 2D catches up to what 3D has to offer. It definitely rekindled my desire to learn the art and I'm looking to do just that during my MFA.

2. the animated film It's Such a Beautiful Day

I just really love this film. The style of the animation can be considered child-like or unrefined with its use of hand-drawn stick figures, but it works so perfectly with the story it presents. I can't imagine it being done in any other way. I think it helps me to put things in perspective that, you don't need to approach a project with a mainstream mindset that one might consider to be current or proper. If it works, it works; focus on that.

3.-5. animated cartoons like Adventure Time, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Steven Universe, and many others!

I probably wouldn't be sane today if it wasn't for animated cartoons. It brings about the purest forms of joy through nonsense and tomfoolery, while still delivering complex storylines, fully built universes, and deep messages. Afterall, you can't be super serious all the time. Trust your gut, be yourself and be silly!

6.-10. GAMES! Just all the games! But some of my favorites are Darkest Dungeon, The Binding of Isaac series, The Legend of Zelda series, Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk, and Hades

My love for games is similar to my love for cartoons, except you get to be the character! Experience the grand world and storylines through that character or create your own stories, characters and worlds. Nothing inspires me to create my own characters and worlds as much as games do, especially games that give you the freedom and control to add and create your own sort of story to the overarching story provided by the game.

I tend to have an affinity for dungeon-crawlers, rogue-likes, and RPGs. Something about slowly progressing through the story through an endless cycle of trial and tribulations, of death and rebirth. You are slowly learning and growing along with story, making it feel that much more rewarding when you do succeed and progress. The progression from starting off weak and becoming stronger through both mistakes and triumphs, appeals to me personally, makes it feel more immersive and that no matter what, you just have to keep trying and you'll eventually get there.

Deltarunes narrator part 2

I’m replaying Deltarune and paying extra close attention to the narrator to make a comparison between the two and, eventually take a guess at who the narrator is. This tomfoolery was prompted by me remembering the narrator Chara theory, which I believe to be true. I am trying to remine objective for this comparison but I will fall down a rabbit hole into wild speculation and theorizing eventually... It’s just who I am. 

Part 1

Masterpost

First I’m going to make a slight correction from part 1. It has come to my attention that before you go to the dark world the options selection is the same as in Undertale defaulting to one side and using white and white text.

It isn’t until we go to the dark world and Ralsei askes us to listen to his tale that we are presented with the centered heart and white and yellow text.

What is possibly the most interesting about this is that the white and yellow text stays after returning from the dark world.

There are only Two (I believe) cases of white and yellow text options in Undertale. One being when Chara asks if you want to destroy everything at the end of a murder montage, and the other when you name the fallen human at the beginning of the game.

And I have to correct myself once again because the actual first time we see the centered heart and white and yellow text is

I’m not going to jump into theories just yet, but stay tuned part 3 is most likely where we start falling down rabbet holes.

I am going to take a quick minute to sidetrack away from the narrator. Bare with me for this one I feel like I is worth looking at with the subject of the narrator in the back of our minds. 

At a glance it would be easy to say that both Kris and Frisk are your generic silent RPG protagonist for you to project yourself onto. Nothing happens to challenge this idea in Undertale until you complete a true pacifist run. Once you manage to get through to Asriel and he askes for your name Frisk answers him with their own name instead of the one you chose at the beginning of the game. Frisk very rarely acts outside of the players influence, keeping the illusion that you and Frisk are one in the same. (this may be less true during a no fun run, but I am too much of a weenie to play that run myself so I have only watch it. I remember there being time the character advanced on someone when they were trying to monolog but I don’t know if that was under the control of the player or not) The only (non geno run) time I can think of where Frisk acts somewhat independently is in the true lab, walking extremely slowly toward the shower and moving much faster than usual if you turned back.

Kris on the other hand seems to be far more willing to act on their own. Backing away from the closet door when first finding the dark world, jumping in front of Susie to black an attack from Spade King, and running on their own when prompted by Susie when Lancer first attacks after entering the dark world. (by this last one I mean you don’t have to hold the run bottom down, you still have to initiate movement.) And that's not even bringing into account that they... you know...

Yeah all that... Lets get back to the narrator.

I don’t think Undertales narrator ever told you what someone else was thinking like this, only what they were doing. I could be wrong about this one but I still felt it was worth putting in here. 

One thing I have noticed that I didn’t pay too much attention to at first was the narrators callbacks to check info from Undertale though they are not exact.

this last one isn’t really a callback but I did fine it interesting that the end of battle message was different between the two

especially when this is something that happens

Sorry I keep going off on tangents away from the narrator, I just feel like this stuff is going to mean something later on.
