I don't know why this isn't talked about much, but, among the loose ends and problems that are going to be tied up in TWP and BBOTD, the one we've least talked about is Shinyun Jung.
She is a valid problem too, y'know? And as far as The Lost Book of The White tells us, her current power is comparable to that of LUCIFER. And we know that because she said at the end of the book that her power won't be dependent on any world like Sammael depends on Diyu. That makes her more powerful and more dangerous than the frickin' Father of Demons. She is FAR from gone.
Although I think that her power would be unstable due to the lack of a dependable resource and it would also be dangerous to herself, that doesn't mean she won't do enough damage on the way down.
In one of my reblogs, there's a theory that states that Alec survived a jab from the Svefnthorn because Lucifer bent the thorn's magic. That theory is solidified by the Epilogue of LBoTW, where Sammael gathered the other Princes of Hell, to inform them about Lucifer's plan. Obviously, that means Lucifer wants to keep tabs on the leader of all Shadowhunters, right? And who better to give him personal information about him than Shinyun Jung? Who spent quite a lot of time with Alec and Magnus in RSoM.
She won't be planning on serving Lucifer, though. She'll instead concoct a partnership with him, where they both are on equal levels. In my imagination, Lucifer probably bosses the other Princes into serving Shinyun too. Irrelevant, but still. :)
I also think she's going to be a part of Lucifer taking possession over Alec, which I think was the purpose of saving Alec in the first place.
What do you guys think?

A new non-invasive imaging technique called raster-scan optoacoustic mesoscopy (RSOM) shows promise for detecting diabetes progression and severity by visualizing microscopic changes in the skin’s blood vessels. Recently published research from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Helmholtz Munich reveals RSOM’s ability to create detailed three-dimensional maps of the skin’s microvasculature down to capillary dimensions. Machine learning then pinpoints subtle alterations reflecting vascular damage tied to advancing diabetes.
Tracking disease progression in diabetes remains a major challenge. Current blood tests like glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) analysis lack sensitivity for detecting early vascular complications or monitoring subtle worsening over time. Skin manifestations also tend to appear late and crudely indicate systemic microvascular damage. This often delays interventions until irreversible organ injury sets in.
The new technique leverages the skin’s accessibility to “read out” diabetes’ impacts on tiny vessels in ways not previously possible. It images living tissue without dyes or contrast agents using optical and ultrasonic waves. Powerful AI methods then extract and analyze hundreds of explainable microvascular features predictive of diabetes severity.

Malectober Day 12: Mask
Tumblr media
I couldn't actually think of what to write for this one, so instead I designed masquerade masks for Magnus and Alec based (loosely) on this early Cassandra Jean art for TRSOM: Cassie Clare on Instagram: “I asked @cassandrajp for an illustration of a scene from The Eldest Curses for Pride Month and she graciously agreed -- Magnus and Alec and…”

I find myself wondering more and more about the Downworlders, particularly those in the Hell Ruelle - Hypatia, Malcolm, Kellington, Lily Chen, even Magnus - and their perspectives during and post Chain of Thorns. Are you finding the same?
In particular, I’d love to see a scene between Hypatia and Magnus discussing Cordelia’s paladin status, Malcolm’s state of mind post-Cornwall (do they notice anything?) and the impact of Belial’s attack on London. If that spurs any creative sparks? 😊
Sorry, this has been drafted for days, but I haven’t been able to get it cleaned up enough to post until now 💖 I have definitely been wondering about a lot of those things too.
Cordelia asks Hypatia to keep the paladin thing a secret from Magnus, and I think Hypatia would probably honor that. Magnus might find out anyway, but I don’t know if they’d discuss it with each other.
I’m really interested in how Malcolm’s personality change comes across to the other warlocks. When Malcolm is first introduced in TMI, Catarina says something happened to him at the turn of the century and he’s been weird ever since, so they know something happened. And when we’re in Magnus’s POV in RSoM he thinks something about Malcolm’s persona being an act that Malcolm is very good at. I think warlocks just go weird from grief sometimes, so maybe the others just didn’t look to hard at other reasons Malcolm might have gone weird.
Also the main warlock-centric thing I’ve been thinking about since the book came out has been how Ragnor would react to Christopher’s death, and that worked well with this setup (and it fixes the plothole where Ragnor is still high warlock in TBC that got retconned in the newer canon) so I put it in the ficlet too.
——
Magnus pulled open the door of the magic shop, slightly out of breath from his sprint from the closest spot outside of Hypatia’s wards that he was able to Portal to from the Institute. The message Hypatia had sent him was brief, but urgent, and he had rushed out at once.
The bell on the shop door chimed cheerfully, an odd contrast to Hypatia herself, pacing back and forth in front of the counter, clearly agitated, with a letter clutched in her hand.
She looked up at the sound of the bell, and relaxed slightly when she saw that it was him.
“If you’re done with your Shadowhunters, we have a problem.” She waved the letter in her hand at Magnus. “Malcolm is stepping down as High Warlock.“
Magnus wasn’t as surprised as he would have been under normal circumstances. He had seen Malcolm only briefly since they had been able to return to London and start putting right the chaos that had been left behind with the death of Belial. They had only exchanged a few words, but Magnus had noticed that Malcolm had seemed shaken and distracted, his usually well-tailored clothes unkempt, marks of stress and exhaustion on his ageless face.
There had been so much to do—and Malcolm had always been very quiet and private in his grief—the other, louder, problems had taken priority.
Magnus regretted not talking to him sooner, but he could not blame Malcolm for his decision to step down. Magnus knew the story of how the girl Malcolm had once loved had left him to become an Iron Sister, after all, and privately, he suspected that seeing the way Belial had used the bodies of Iron Sisters and Silent Brothers to attack London must have been a shock to Malcolm, even if his love hadn’t been among the Iron Sisters whose bodies had been possessed.
Magnus might have wanted to flee the city under those circumstances as well.
“I think it may be for the best,” Magnus said gently. “Malcolm did not seem well when I spoke to him. I hope a change of scenery helps.”
“I understand why he wants to leave,” Hypatia said, and Magnus saw the same flash of concern he felt for Malcolm on her face as well, “But Magnus, he wants me to take over.”
“I would congratulate you, but you don’t sound pleased by the idea,” Magnus murmured, reaching for her. Hypatia let him pull her into an embrace.
“I can’t do it,” she said into his shoulder, letting the regal and perfectly in control persona she liked to project down just a little bit. “I don’t have the experience, and it would ruin my business.” She pulled back a little so she could look up at his face. “I need you to ask Ragnor Fell to come back, at least until all the mess is sorted out. He knows the High Warlock duties better than anyone currently in London. And he’ll listen to you.”
It seemed unfair to call Ragnor back from his own vacation—especially after he had already interrupted it once to come to Idris to help with the ultimately futile effort to open a Portal to London while it had been under Belial’s control— but Magnus found it very hard to say no to Hypatia’s pleading eyes.
“I’ll ask him,” he said, earning him the smile that made the stars in her eyes twinkle, just for him. Combined with the deep navy dress she was wearing, he felt like he held the entire night sky in his arms, glittering and beautiful.
And that was how Magnus Bane found himself in Capri, walking up the sunny hillside to Ragnor’s villa, which overlooked the deep blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
He found Ragnor already standing in the doorway, with his arms crossed.
“I see you were expecting me,” Magnus smiled at his old friend.
Ragnor scowled back. “I had an ominous feeling that trouble was approaching.”
“You saw me walking up the hill from your window.”
“I saw you walking up the hill from my window,” Ragnor confirmed. He sighed and stood aside to let Magnus in. “Well, out with it then. What bad news have you brought me?”
“Malcolm has stepped down as High Warlock,” Magnus said. He briefly considered telling Ragnor his suspicion that seeing the possessed Iron Sisters had been too much for Malcolm to bear, but he wasn’t sure it was his business to share. “With the state of things in London, the warlocks desperately need a leader who already knows what they’re doing, and who the Shadowhunters already trust,” he said instead.
“Absolutely not,” Ragnor said. “I was in Idris when exploding messages began to appear all around us, and I was unsurprised to hear the name Christopher Lightwood tied to them. One nearly set my sleeve on fire, Magnus! I want no part in whatever madness Christopher Lightwood is currently unleashing, I refuse to return to London as long as that menace—“
“Ragnor!” Magnus interrupted loudly before his friend could get going on his usual rant, and stick his entire foot in his mouth in the process. “Did you not hear? Christopher Lightwood was killed during Belial’s invasion. The London Shadowhunters brought his body with them when they evacuated London.”
Ragnor gaped at him, momentarily stunned, a brief expression of horror crossing his face before he got it under control. “I didn’t know,” he said at last. “I wasn’t called until after the London enclave had already appeared in Idris, and they only spoke to me about the Portals. I’m sorry to hear he was killed.”
Magnus must have look unconvinced because Ragnor sighed and ran a hand through his snowy hair. “I didn’t like the boy, but I didn’t wish any harm upon him,” he muttered guiltily. “Nor did I wish that grief upon his parents or his sister.”
Ragnor had gotten along rather well with Anna Lightwood, Magnus knew from his conversations with Anna—what felt like ages ago now, when things in London had been calmer. Or rather well for Ragnor at least, which meant he generally tolerated her.
Ragnor sighed again. “I’ll return to London and help sort out the mess then. But I don’t intend to stay, and I expect you to help me find a new High Warlock to replace me as soon as possible.”
“I’ll do what I can,” Magnus said, clapping his friend on the shoulder. It seemed like all any of them could do.

Oh I didnt realize before now that you really dont like jessa. I really prefer jessa over wessa. And I hope you dont take this the wrong way, I just find it interesting how we have so different opinions. It might be because I read all of tmi + lady midnight before tid. I actually find that tessa is more muted when shes with will than jem and that is one of my gripes with tlh though I loved seeing them with their children. And while I do agree that tessa is a bit different in modern times i think it has more to do with the fact that its been a 100 years than being with jem. And I really like how she wants to take time to just be a family after going so long without one. And I love how its really different from her family with will. I think if itd be more similar itd be boring.
Hey! I definitely take none of this the wrong way, don't worry. I also find it fascinating that two people can read the same thing and develop such wildly different opinions/interpretations. I'm firmly of the mindset that this diversity is what makes fandom unique and interesting so long as no one harasses each other (which you're not!)
So my thing with Modern!Tessa is that I actually do enjoy her scenes when she's not with Jem. Like, she's amazing with Magnus in RSoM, and she has some great scenes with various TMI characters, too. Also really adore the mentions of her hanging out and pulling pranks on her immortal friends - it's that impishness and humor and life that I feel like she's lost with Jem.
I also like that she has a family again a lot - I may dislike Jessa's dynamic, but if Will has to be gone I am happy that Tessa no longer has to be alone. Plus, choosing love over and over again is a testament to her character.
I will admit that I also generally like historical TSC way more than modern, so I have that bonus add-on bias here, too. But I like Tessa the least in historical content when she's with Jem, too.
If you don't mind me asking - sheer curiosity - what do you like about Tessa with Jem that you don't like about Tessa with Will? What do you perceive as muted? I'm certain I won't agree, but I am really curious and interested and will respect your opinion.

ahem so i will talk about robert during cofa/cols i hope to not bore you too much
remember how trsom keeps up with the retcon tendency full force and that like always, almost none of the logistics of stuff is thought about
there's funny (probably only i find it funny) logistic details that i couldn't help but notice, about robert
first, the most obvious, is what alec says in city of lost souls:
When Magnus and I were traveling, and I’d call from the road, Dad never asked how he was
when. WHEN.
i feel robbed
...from where robert would get the calls. wasn't he in idris? so...
the second part is more complicated and it's more about logistic details that make me feel out of my mind
at the end of cog, everyone was in alicante, okay. then everyone goes back to ny and alec and magnus leave for their trip
the curious part is how robert fits into this, because through cofa + cols it's implied that robert never comes back from idris until the end of cols
more logistic assumption comes into this with isabelle being very upset that robert was away as if it had never happened before. it absolutely has. like, 2 books ago, robert was in idris for a good while. of course now there's the aggravation of max's death and the family falling apart, but the point is that the vibe is that robert has been in idris since cog
so in rsom we have that convo
His father had not liked it when Alec announced he was leaving the Institute to go on a trip with Magnus.
what where when?
the implication of this is of something happening at the ny institute, where robert supposedly wasn't
“What has he told you about us?” Robert Lightwood had asked, pacing Alec’s room like a distressed cat.
extremely adorable imo, but where is he again
this logistic complication can be divided into two possibilities: this somehow happened in idris, contradicting the words used (at least according to my reading), or robert did come back to new york once between cog and cofa. (i would only assume once since even his adopted son disappearing under disastrous circunstances makes him come back to ny. we get it, the guy is really ditching his family)
cc doesn't like robert's character so of course that the jace father reveal is not at all ever something approached thinking of robert's point of view as if jace didn't use the name wayland for xx years and robert is just being very normal about it. ah nevermind we remember that the parabatai bond is only real in the infernal devices, it's not a thing in tmi. so whatever if in the last couple of months robert maybe had multiple reasons to want distance from it all and reject his responsabilities with his family
plus alec stuff with magnus which is supposedly a huge scandal. none of this is ever considered as stuff piling up to make robert run away. his absence is always referred as something with very simple and objective reasons, even if they don't make that much sense or if there's a lot of context behind
since somehow alec seems to assume the worst about robert's attitudes towards his sexuality, there was the opportunity for him to feel like maybe he was one of the reasons for robert deciding to stay away, it would make sense, and that would have made alec's feelings richer in my opinion, giving him more reasons to be upset that justified his resentment towards his father
instead, there was that cols convo that i can't understand for the life of me. i want to write about robert as a parent in another ask, so not going for much information except the timing
But my father — no, not really. Once he asked me what I thought had turned me gay
the timing issue keeps bugging me. when did that happen. robert was in idris during cofa and cols, so of course it would have happened between cog and cofa, and that goes back to the question of i robert was ever back to ny or if this happened in idris and certainly would have been before the convo from rsom
i could stay a long time here trying to chart possibilities of timing of robert's supposed reactions to alec's sexuality, but that would be just me making stuff up, because none of this was ever written to make sense and it never attempted to make sense. stuff going on carried by vibes only, no basic time-space logic
- R
City of Glass takes place in September, City of Fallen Angels six weeks after that in October.
“Maryse was still coping with Max’s death, which had been only six weeks ago, and she was doing it alone, with Robert Lightwood still in Idris.” (City of Fallen Angels)
“Tell that to Dad. Did he even come back from Idris for the meeting?” (City of Lost Souls)
“Well, whatever,” said Isabelle, obviously annoyed not to get the joke. “It’s not like Dad’s ever coming back from Idris, anyway.” (City of Lost Souls)
Nothing indicates that Robert ever came back even for a bit to pace around Alec's room. It’s reasonable to assume Robert never came back to New York during those six weeks after City of Glass. Also, in CoG:
“Clary. There are no cars in Idris.” Seeing her shocked expression, Luke laughed without much amusement. “The wards foul up the machinery. Most technology doesn’t work here—mobile phones, computers, the like. Alicante itself is lit—and powered—mostly by witchlight.”
and
“Maybe you should call him,” Simon suggested, trying not to think too hard about how weird it was to be giving a demon hunter advice about possibly dating a warlock. “Can’t,” Alec said. “No phones in Idris. It doesn’t matter, anyway.” His tone was abrupt. “We’re here. This is the Gard.”
So indeed, how would he pick up a call if there is no phones? This is such a good catch.
The whole passage in The Red Scrolls of Magic is:
Now he was out of the money he’d brought with him. As he’d left the New York Institute, duffel bag slung over his shoulder, to begin this trip, his mother had chased him out and pressed money into his hands, even though he’d tried to refuse it. “Go be happy,” she had said. Alec wondered whether he’d been scammed by the faerie girl. She might be hundreds of years old, and faeries were well-known for their love of scamming mortals. But he decided to believe that she was what she seemed—a scared, hungry kid—and it made him feel happy to have helped. So the money was well spent. His father had not liked it when Alec announced he was leaving the Institute to go on a trip with Magnus. “What has he told you about us?” Robert Lightwood had asked, pacing Alec’s room like a distressed cat.
For why I feel like, with the recent books, there’s been some attempt to rewrite Maryse’s personality as well. She's pretty cold in TMI, a bit villainized also (in Luke's and Clary's perspectives), compared to TRSoM or TDA. What has always struck me weird is that there is no reaction from Robert or Maryse about Jace being Herondale, son of Stephen, any of it, because these relationships do not exist in Clare’s mind, or existed at the time anyway. It’s also weird that they too fail to see the similarity he bears to his birth parents.
Aside from the timing, which is all over the place, I think that “what has turned me gay” thing uses Robert’s character as a vehicle to the homophobia Alec experiences, because Alec never otherwise faces those dire consequences Isabelle warned Clary about in City of Bones. There’s the car conversation about the tiny little papercuts, but that’s about it. Before Clare decided to deepen Robert’s character more than treat him as this side figure people sometimes mention and talk about, he was more like a mere boogieman to Alec’s self-image issues and confidence.
Robert and Alec's relationship is all over the place in the series. At some points it is left somewhat vague. Sometimes I can't figure out the angle because the writing doesn't really give the time of day to this particular father-son relationship.
